Chapter 2-
Kagome’s blind date

The walls of the well would disappear somewhere between Kagome’s drop from the top and her landing with a loud thud down at the bottom of the well. Her entire body tingling as she was heaved from Feudal Japan to her own time 500 years in the future. Everything changed around her, the past and present merging for one brief moment only to spit her out into her own time with a hard landing on her feet.

The air filled with the musty smell of the well, now aged 500 years. The sunlight that peeked over the top of the well was now gone, covered over with darkness. Kagome shouted out a quiet hello, waiting in complete silence for a response. Giving up on someone coming to help her, she blindly grasping around in search of the rope ladder that would carry her to the top. She slowly hoisted herself upwards until she reached the top, occasionally glancing down over her shoulder to make sure she was alone. With one final push upwards, Kagome swung herself over the top of the wall.

She tarried in the small dank room, making sure that InuYasha hadn’t followed behind her. Kagome had been evasive when responding to InuYasha’s question of why she had needed to return to her own time, knowing that had she given him a full explanation he would have wanted to follow her. She hated the deception, but she didn’t need him showing up in the middle of dinner.

Her mother had made her promise to return for a special dinner, that much was true, but that was the extent of all that she had told InuYasha. What she had left out was that her mother had invited a special guest as well. The guest was a young man that her mother had begged Kagome to meet.

Assured that InuYasha was not going to follow, Kagome made her way towards her house. Her steps intentionally sluggish as she took the small journey home to think. For some time now she had began to realize that her feeling for InuYasha had begun to deepen, and she was almost certain she was falling head over heels for him. That wasn’t the problem completely. She would have given in whole heartedly to her emotions, if she was sure that InuYasha could return her feelings...that was where the problems came.

The odds were against them, of this she knew for a fact. They were from different times, different lifestyles. Kagome was used to TV, telephones, and most importantly a warm bath! She loved coming home and soaking in the bathtub for hours. Feudal Japan was filled with monsters and demons, dangers that lurked around every corner. She knew she was safe with InuYasha, but she wasn’t sure if she was to make that sacrifice.

Kagome’s mind was so filled with her own thoughts that she was too distracted to notice that she had reached her house. She also didn’t notice the young dark haired man standing at her front door.

Reaching her front porch, she stepped over towards the front door, her eyes still downcast to the ground. She reached out to grab the door knob to her front door, when her hand encountered something other then the door. Glancing up, she soon realized that she had grabbed the arm of a man. Color soon rose to her cheeks, as her fingers released their grip on the man’s arm.

“I’m so sorry.....I wasn’t paying attention.” Her cheeks continued to burn a deep shade of red as she peered up into the young man’s face. Her eyes gazed over his features, causing her to blush even more. He was definitely attractive. Dark green eyes, a perfect chin, and a smile that could probably make any woman’s heart stop. He was tall, with a slender, yet muscular build. To any other girl it probably would have been love at first sight. But Kagome wasn’t any other girl, and her heart was in a time 500 years in the past.

“Can I help you?” Kagome questioned, in a soft tentative voice. She could only assume this was the young man her mother had invited to dinner, and her assumption was proven right when her mother opened the door, smiling to the two of them.

“Ah, Kagome! I see you’ve met our guest. “ She nodded in the young man’s direction. “Kagome, this is Enraku, Enraku, this is my daughter Kagome.”

Kagome’s gaze shifted from Enraku to her mother, then back to Enraku. She was somewhat intrigued by the young mans presence. He seemed so familiar, yet he was a complete stranger to her. He had the same aura about him as someone she knew. He had a confident air about him, but at the same time there was something unknown lingering around him, she just couldn’t place her finger on it.

She observed him briefly, trying to place why he seemed so familiar. It was doing her observance that she noticed the small box in his hand; it was wrapped in plain pink paper, with a small bow on the top. Her eyes lingered on the box for some time. As she stared, the hair on the back of Kagome’s neck rose. She could sense a shard of the jewel nearby, and she was fully expecting that it was coming from that small box in Enraku’s hand.

Enraku couldn’t help but become fascinated as he watched Kagome. She was like a gentle breeze flowing through a hot day. He had met so many girls, but never had one been as refreshing as the one who stood before him. So sweet and innocent at a glance, but as he gaze met her eyes he knew instantly that there was more to her then met the eye. There was something inside those dark brown hues that didn’t quite match the image she portrayed.

He wanted to know more. He felt drawn to Kagome like a moth to a flame. He completely forgot about his true intentions for wanting to meet the young woman, and let his emotions cloud his mind and memory. Rousing himself from his thoughts, he offered his hand out to Kagome.

“A pleasure to meet such a lovely young lady. “ He didn’t wait for Kagome to reach her hand out, instead he snatched hers into his own. Brushing a light kiss over the back of her hand, he gave her palm a light squeeze with the tips of his fingers before reluctantly releasing his grip. He could have held onto her hand for hours, but she didn’t seem like the type to allow it.

Kagome felt as if her feet were glued to the ground. She had only had a guy treat her that way once, and despite the fact he seemed so sincere, she soon learned he wasn’t what he seemed. Giving her head a shake to clear the thoughts from her head, she glanced over at her mother then to Enraku. A small smile spread over her lips.

Wow....he’s nothing like InuYasha. I have to practically die for InuYasha to get anywhere near me.

“Oh, I almost forgot.” Enraku reached out, sliding the small pink box into Kagome’s hand. “Your mother told me your birthday was a few days ago, so I thought I’d give you a late birthday present. It’s not much, just something I found while I was out with my younger brother looking for frogs.”

Kagome arched a brow as she turned her attention to the box. Gently, she ripped the paper off and slid the top of the box off. To her surprise laying in the box was a shard of the Shikon jewel. She nearly jumped up for joy, but thought it would bring too much suspicion. Instead she gave him a soft smile. “Thank you.”

“Well, are you two going to come in, or are you going to stand outside all night?”

With her thoughts once more interrupted, Kagome nodded in reply to her mother. She had told InuYasha she would be back tonight, but she hadn’t planned on enjoying the company. She had to admit Enraku was interesting, but not just because of how he behaved. She still couldn’t shake the feeling that she knew him from somewhere. She was determined to find out exactly what his story was.

Kagome moved towards the door, opening it up so that Enraku could step into the house. “Shall we?”

Enraku had continued to stare at Kagome the entire time. She was a fascination to him. The way she moved, the way she spoke, he could watch her for hours. Was this truly the girl he had read so many stories about? He knew if that was true he was going to have a tough time trying to win her over. Enraku knew a lot more about Kagome then he would let on, or at least he had thought that he knew.

For years he had read stories about a young girl who with a group traveled throughout Japan fighting monsters and demons. The book which held the tales had been an family treasure, handed down from father to son. At the age of eight years old he had begun following the adventures of his ancestor and his friends.

Hearing Kagome’s voice in his ear, he nodded absently in response. He followed her through the doorway, still wondering if this was the girl that he had in a small way grown up admiring.

Enraku couldn’t keep from grinning. If this was the girl he had read so much about, he couldn’t wait to get to know more about her. This dinner was definitely going to be interesting. Just how much though, Enraku would never have been able to foresee.
