Chapter 12-
The Pizza Monster

They had emerged from the well several hours ago, and Sesshomaru still hadn’t recovered from the shock. As soon as they appeared at the bottom of the well, he found himself sinking to his knees as the sounds and smells of this new era rushed at him. It took him several minutes to recover, finally hindering his senses so that he was not as easily offended.

When he had finally managed to regain his composure, Kagome led him to the house. Since then, after his introduction to his mother, brother and grandfather, Sesshomaru had been devouring almost everything in her kitchen.

It had started off innocently enough, her mother had offered him a breakfast of pancakes and sausage. That was when things had gone down hill. One taste of pancakes drowned in maple syrup, and Sesshomaru had to try everything that Mrs. Higurashi had to offer.

He had gone through an ham and cheese omelet, a bowl of cereal, ramen, even left over pizza that her mother had from the night before. From her room she could hear Sesshomaru almost outwardly praise her mother’s cooking. “Mrs. Higurashi, this Sesshomaru would desire some more of that.....peaza.”

“Did you enjoy it Lord Sesshomaru?” Her mother replied, unable to contain the amusement in her voice.

Sesshomaru obviously ignored her amusement, the desire of his stomach causing the stick that was usually up his butt to disappear. He almost seemed decent as he responded back. “Indeed, I must say it’s the first human food that I think I could tolerate eating regularly.”

Kagome could only laugh at Sesshomaru’s behaviour. It was almost adorable to watch, especially when he began to follow her mother around like a puppy dog begging for table scraps.

Reluctantly, Kagome forced herself to try and ignore Sesshomaru and return to the opened book in front of her, but she was still unable to concentrate on her studying. Slamming the book closed with a frown, Kagome reached over and flipped on her radio, turning the music up just loud enough to drown out Sesshomaru.

Moving away from the desk, she flopped down on her bed and stared up at the ceiling. Her mind began to fill with thoughts of Inuyasha. Was he looking for her? Did he even care anymore? Surely he had run off with Kikyo and wasn’t bothered to search for her until he was ready to resume looking for the jewel shards.

A soft sigh escaped her lips as she draped her arm over her eyes. It hurt too much to think about Inuyasha. She was certain he wasn’t looking for her, he hadn’t even bothered to come through the well to see if she was here.

If I don't say this now I will surely breakAs I'm leaving the one I want to takeForgive the urgency but hurry up and waitMy heart has started to separate

Kagome groaned inwardly as she listened to the words of the song. Her heart began to race as images of Inuyasha flooded her mind, despite her attempts to force them away.

There now, steady love, so few come and don't goWill you won't you, be the one I always knowWhen I'm losing my control, the city spins aroundYou're the only one who knows, you slow it down

Images of Inuyasha’s smile, the sound of his laughter flashed before her eyes, which began to sting as unshed tears filled them.
“What is that ghastly sound?”

Blinking away her unshed tears, she bolted upright on her bed only to stare at Sesshomaru. She looked at him before bursting into laughter. The expression on his face was priceless. He stood just inside the doorway, his gaze to the radio. He looked as if he was both trying to burn the offending device but at the same time trying to figure out how it worked. His brow furrowed in deep concentration as he stared.

Catching her breath, she rose off the bed and rushed over to turn the radio down so it wouldn’t bother Sesshomaru’s sensitive ears as much. “It’s music. You don’t like it?”

Sesshomaru was in complete and utter shock. Never had he heard a man sing such a whining, romantic song. “That man should seek a healer to find the missing part of his male anatomy.” Sesshomaru responded, which to his dismay caused another bout of laughter from Kagome.

“It’s a love song, there’s a lot of them in this time. It’s mostly for girls to listen to and dream about their perfect relationship, or for guys to play for a girl to try and win them over.”

Amazed with the fact that men used such silly songs to try and sway a woman’s attention, Sesshomaru stepped back over to the radio, pushing at it with a tentative finger. In his examination, his finger grazed the channel selector button, and soon another song began to fill the air.

Is it still me that makes you sweat?Am I who you think about in bed? When the lights are dim and your hands are shaking as you're sliding off your dress? Then think of what you didAnd how I hope to God he was worth it.When the lights are dim and your heart is racing as your fingers touch his skin.I've got more wit, a better kiss, a hotter touch, a better fuck Than any boy you'll ever meet, sweetie you had meGirl I was it, look past the sweat, a better love deserving of Exchanging body heat in the passenger seat? No, no, no, you know it will always just be me

Mouth agape, Sesshomaru began to fuss with the radio again, trying to turn off the racket that the miko called music. Had he been hearing things? Was this man in the box really speaking about rutting, and for others to hear? And was he also talking about an unfaithful mate, without so much as threatening to kill her? What kind of era was this?!?!

Kagome’s laughter died as she saw the puzzled look on Sesshomaru’s face. A thought frown crossed over her features. She immediately reached over and cut the radio off, before Sesshomaru decided to destroy it. “Sesshomaru? Are you alright?”

The taiyoukai stared at Kagome for the longest time, trying to piece together this new era. Were people really that unmoral? Had honor and pride been so quickly replaced that now nothing was sacred? He was at a complete loss. “Miko....tell me more about this era.”

“What do you want to know?” Kagome continued to stare at Sesshomaru, her concern growing greatly with each second.

“What are people like? What is life like here?”

Frowning, Kagome settled back down on her bed, pulling her knees to her chest. “Well, I don’t really know that much changed with time....I mean people anyway. Just like in your time, there’s people who are kind, people who are cruel, and people who are only concerned with being rich or powerful. But there are a lot more people in this time then in your time, almost to the point of overpopulation.”
“But what of this music? Are people so...do they not keep such personal things private? Will I go outside to watch people rutting all over the place?

Kagome held back her laughter and shook her head. “No, it’s not that bad. But things have changed in that way. People don’t wait until they’re married to...to...well you know, and it’s not unusual for people to be with more then one person. Marriages aren’t as long as they used to be either. It’s not uncommon for people to divorce and remarry.”

“Marriage? You mean the human’s way of mating?”

“Yes. Sometimes people get married three, four times, even more then that with some people. Sometimes people will be married to one person, cheat on their spouse with another person, then divorce and marry the person they were cheating with.”

Kagome couldn’t help but flinch at the scowl on Sesshomaru’s face. He looked angry, but she couldn’t figure out why.

In the most un-Sesshomaru like manner, the demon lord dropped onto Kagome’s bed beside her. Sure he was not prone to be romantic, but even he could mourn the loss of romance and love. What kind of life could one live jumping from mate to mate? And what about any heirs? How would one know of their linage? What kind of a world could this be if even love and the act of love was not even precious?

Hesitantly, Kagome placed a hand on Sesshomaru’s arm. “Are you alright?”

Turning to the miko, he leaned over so that his face hovered only inches from her own. Staring into the depths of her eyes, he searched for some sign about her character. Was she like these people? Did she jump between mates? No, he didn’t think that she was like that. But how was she so unaffected from the world around her? How had she managed to hold onto her innocence when all around her people were acting like dogs in heat?

“What about you? Do you go from mate to mate and rut with anyone you please?”
Kagome tried to be angry at his question, but found herself far to embarrassed. “No....I’ve never had a mate....or a boyfriend, and I’ve never rutted.” Her voice faltered. She had tried to force some sort of anger into her voice, trying to warn him off of asking so many personal questions, but the way he kept staring into her eyes was throwing her off.

“So do you plan on mating with my half brother then moving on to someone else when you tire of him?”

Tears sprung into Kagome’s eyes at his question. He had no idea that Inuyasha didn’t want to be with her, that he had chosen Kikyo instead. She couldn’t bring herself to answer his question, she couldn’t trust her voice to actually say the words out loud. All she could do was shake her head.

Catching the scent of her tears, Sesshomaru leaned even closer to the miko. “Why do you cry? Surely my brother has asked you to be his mate, hasn’t he?”

Again Kagome replied by shaking her head, this time allowing her head to drop so that her chin rest on her chest. “He...he...doesn’t want me...not as his....” She didn’t finish the sentence, instead she burst into loud pain filled sobs.

Sesshomaru was taken back by her outburst, but inwardly he was pleased with her announcement. His brother had not proposed to take her as a mate, this would work in his favor.

“This Sesshomaru apologizes for causing you to be sad.” His voice was barely above a whisper. He hadn’t meant to actually say the words aloud, but they somehow managed to spill out of his mouth before he could think about it.

The apology shocked Kagome to her core. The uttered words causing her to lift her tear filled gaze back up to meet his eyes. Was she hearing things? Was she imagining that concerned stare, and the tiniest bit of sympathy that she saw in his eyes?

With locked gazes, the two sat in a comfortable silence for several minutes, neither turning to look away. It wasn’t until Kagome’s heart rate began to pick up that Sesshomaru forced himself to turn away, having had the desired effect on the miko that he had been trying to attain.

It was then that the seed of his plot began to sprout. Though he was genuinely concerned about the miko, he had every intention on using her vulnerability to his advantage. If he could gain her trust by listening to her cry and allowing himself to comfort her, at least as much as he was capable of, he would be able to penetrate her thoughts. Once inside her mind, he knew he would have to find a way to force the half breed out and become the replacement for his memory.

“Rest Kagome, we will speak of more pleasant things later.” He offered her a hint of a smile while pulling the covers up enough for her to slip under them.

Smiling, she slid under the covers and pulled them up to her chin. Snuggling into her pillow she yawned. “You said my name. And here I thought you were incapable of dropping that Mr. Cool act.”

Closing her eyes, she began to notice exactly just how tired she was. Letting out another soft yawn, she muttered quietly just as she began to doze. “You should...get some rest....” Before she could complete the thought, she was sound asleep.

Assured that the miko had drifted off, Sesshomaru rose to his feet and went off to seek out Kagome’s mother. Finding her in the kitchen washing the dishes, he cleared his throat before approaching her.

Glancing over her shoulder, Mrs. Higurashi gave the demon lord a smile. “So Lord Sesshomaru, are you here for more pizza?”

Sesshomaru sat down at the table where he could watch the woman. “No...er...if it isn’t too much trouble, but that isn’t why I am here.” His brow furrowed into a frown as he contemplated how to approach the subject he had been wanting to speak to Kagome’s mother about.

“A penny for your thoughts.” Kagome’s mother chimed in as she opened the fridge and dug out the final slice of pizza.

“Mrs. Higurashi, this Sesshomaru wishes to ask your permission to take your daughter to his palace in the Western Lands.” He blurted it out, his excitement over the slice of pizza causing him once again to forget his usual manner.

Mrs. Higurashi chuckled quietly to herself as placed the pizza on a plate then placed the plate in the microwave. “If that is what Kagome wishes. But what of Inuyasha?”

Kagome’s mother knew of her feelings for Inuyasha. She also knew that Inuyasha and his half brother did not like each other. Although she wasn’t worried about either the hanyou of the taiyoukai allowing Kagome to be harmed, she was worried that the two would harm each other in their rush to protect Kagome.

“This Sesshomaru believe that the half breed has hurt the miko, emotionally that is. He has not asked for her to be his mate, which I believe to be her wish. This Sesshomaru believes there is other things which the miko has not informed me of that are also causing her pain.”

“I see.” She replied quietly, setting the plate in front of Sesshomaru. “Well, if it would help ease her pain, please take her to your palace. Although I do not believe Inuyasha is capable of physically hurting Kagome, I do know first hand that sometimes the emotional pain that he inflicts on her can be worse then if he ran her through with his sword.” A soft sigh escaped her lip as she sat down next to the demon lord who was now devouring his pizza. “Tell me Lord Sesshomaru, what exactly are your intentions for my daughter?”

Roused from the enjoyment of his pizza by the woman’s bluntness, he blinked in surprise. Swallowing the bite that he had been savoring, he looked to the woman. “This Sesshomaru has asked that the miko to teach his ward about...feminine issues.” He swallowed hard, mildly embarrassed by the conversation. “But that is not the only reason I harbor interest for the miko.” He would not elaborate any further, instead he returned to his pizza.

“Well then you have my permission. However, I do expect that you will allow her to return home whenever she would like. I know that she has important things to do there, but she is also my daughter, and I would like to know that she is well.”
With a nod of agreement, he continued to devour his pizza. He would have offered his other arm as sacrifice if she had asked him, at least if she had been holding another slice of pizza, but he wouldn’t reveal that information to her.

Mrs. Higurashi rose to her feet and made to return to the kitchen. She stopped as Sesshomaru shifted his plate, making a slight tapping noise against the table with his claws to gain the woman’s attention. “If I might, perhaps this Sesshomaru can ask a small favor of Mrs. Higurashi?”

Lifting a brow, she glanced over her shoulder to look at Sesshomaru. “And what would that be?”

“That you tell this Sesshomaru how to make this pizza?”
