Choosing your path:An Inu-Yasha tale.

Chapter One:Confusion

It was just another average day for Inu-Yasha, Kagome, Miroku, Sango, and Shippo in the times of Feudal Japan. Inu-Yasha and his traveling companions were doing what they always did, searching out the Shikon no Tama, or, Shikon Jewel. And, as all good days for the five travelers went, Kagome and Inu-Yasha were basically at each other's throats. Over what? The same old things, of course. Inu-Yasha had decided that they'd gain more if they let Naraku search out the final shards of the Jewel, and then they'd just kill him when he got them, saving them the search, as well as ending Naraku's reign of terror over Japan. "If we just let that stupid baboon gather the jewel shards, we kill him and take them easily." Inu-Yasha argued.

"Yeah, and if there was any chance you were strong enough to kill him, I'd say go right ahead Inu-Yasha, but you can't beat him as he is, so imagine if he had all the other jewel shards!!!" Kagome argued back, glaring at the half youkai warrior. "The last thing I really want is to have to bury you, Inu-Yasha!!!" as Kagome screamed this, faint signs of tears lay in her brown eyes, which of course didn't go unnoticed by Inu-Yasha.

At this point, using their brains, Miroku and Sango had moved away from the arguing "couple" knowing full well this was about to break out into a war. But, Shippo, the innocent young kitsune, wouldn't have known well enough to leave some things alone. Meddling was his business. Hopping onto Inu-Yasha's head, Shippo looked down. "You made her cry you stupid jerk! How could you make poor Kagome cry huh!?!?!"

Inu-Yasha grabbed the Kitsune off of his head, and, after pounding him over the head a few times, threw him down to the ground. "Shut up, you stupid kitsune..." he said.

"Stop being mean to Shippo! SIT!!!" Kagome yelled. Inu-Yasha quickly fell to the ground in pain. "That ought to teach you, mean jerk..."

"....I'm outta here." Inu-Yasha said, having nothing to say to Kagome. He felt bad that Kagome was crying over him, but as bad as he felt, he'd never, ever let Kagome see that. He didn't like her knowing how he really felt. "I'll catch you guys some other time, maybe.." Inu-Yasha said and began walking away from the others. But, something was trying to pull Inu-Yasha back, and he knew it was his desire not to leave his friends. Despite how he treated them, he did think of all of them as friends. Even that lecher Miroku. But, even still Inu-Yasha began walking away from the four.

"Inu-Yasha, please, please re-think this." Kagome pleaded. "I don't want to see you get hurt, or even lose you..."

'Does she care for me or something...?' Inu-Yasha wondered to himself, but said only this. "Why would you care if I die, Kagome?"

Kagome mumbled something under her breath, that not even Inu-Yasha's ears could pick up. This caused the half youkai to blink and turn to the fifteen year old human girl. "What was that?" Kagome mumbled it again, still having it be unheard by the youkai swordsman. "Speak up!" Inu-Yasha ordered angrily.

Kagome looked up, crying full and openly now. This made Inu-Yasha feel almost broken, but her words stung more than anything else could have. "Why do you want to know? What do you even care, Inu-Yasha..? I don't know why I bother caring about you, because all you are is some arrogant, selfish youkai who wants nothing more than to be a full youkai, and why!?! To win praise from other youkai? To maybe have your brother not hate you? But why, when four people here care about you so very much for the man you are now!! Go ahead and get yourself killed, you selfish fool!!!"

"...Kagome, I'm sorr..." Inu-Yasha was cut off as he began his sentence.

"I don't care anymore Inu-Yasha!!!" You're just a selfish fool and I give up, I don't want to bother with you ever again!!!!!!!!!!!" Kagome screamed. In an attempt to calm her down, Miroku and Sango both placed their hands on Kagome's shoulders, causing her to smile some.

Inu-Yasha saw this, and, after giving Miroku a bit of a death glare, he moved away, and began walking. "Bye..." was all he said, and, with a quick leap, he was gone, and, Kagome was just about to say something to him as he leapt away. 'I'm sorry, Kagome...goodbye.' Inu-Yasha thought to himself. He then shook his head. 'Why am I feeling like this..? I'm finally rid of that dumb girl, I can fight the way I want to now. I never needed her, she's just a worthless girl...' he thought to himself, wondering why he felt like this as he continued to travel until he found a nice tree to just stay in for a while.

*Back to the others*

"One of us should follow Inu-Yasha." Miroku commented.

"I'll go. You guys will never catch him." Sango said. Then, she leaned over to Shippo. "Make sure he doesn't bother Kagome..." she whispered to the Kitsune, who nodded. "Ja!" she yelled and leapt off after Inu-Yasha.

*Inu-Yasha's location.*
Inu-Yasha continued sitting upon the treebranch he had found, a good enough distance from where the others had last been. He was fast enough that he could have literally been a mile away from them all now. The problem was, either with Sango's cat thing, or just Sango running herself, at least one of them could catch up to him. "I ought to get lost, not bother Kagome again. Then I can just kill Naraku and avenge Kikyou..." he said, closing his golden hued eyes and letting a weak sigh escape his lips. Inu-Yasha was literally feeling like garbage, and had absolutely no idea what to do to go on.

Looking to Tetsusaiga, Inu-Yasha couldn't help but sigh again. He had no clue how to continue on. It was thanks to Kagome he had his Father's fang as his weapon, and because of her it was able to go to full strength, so how could he continue without her? He had to think hard on what to do now, and how to continue on. It was hard to know what he could do here. Where to go, how to get there, what to do there, all questions have gone through his mind now. With Tetsusaiga reduced in power, he knew he had one option. "I must be a full youkai..."

"No you don't." a voiced chirped from below.

Inu-Yasha looked down and saw the demon slayer herself, Sango. 'Damn, I knew one of them would be here soon. I should have kept up running, I need time to think.' he told himself mentally. "What Sango?" he questioned. "Did Kagome send you to drag me back by my ears or something? If that's the case, just walk away, I'm not going back to where that dumb girl is now, and I may never go back." he said, laying back against the tree calmly, crossing his arms over his chest.

Sango quickly leapt up to the tree and sat beside Inu-Yasha. "Inu-Yasha, you love Kagome don't you?"

The half youkai blushed immediately and looked away. "Why the Hell would I love that stupid girl!?!" he yelled angrily.

"You love Kikyou still then?"

"Kikyou is dead. End of story." he stated. "Humans are all weak, I prefer to be alone than try and be with another woman. Kikyou was my only love and Naraku took her from me, I won't love again." Inu-Yasha said, staring down at the ground, letting a soft sigh out of his lips. "Besides, I'm a half youkai, I don't belong around weak humans."

"Hey, I'm not a weak human, I have no trouble facing demons!" Sango yelled.

"Yeah, true, I guess. Still that doesn't mean I'd go after you. And, besides, if I became a full youkai, no woman would want to be with me, and I plan to become full youkai." Inu-Yasha stated.

"You'll change into someone other than yourself as a full youkai. You can't be you if you're not how you were born, you know?"

"Miroku said the same. I probably will change as a full youkai." Inu-Yasha said. "I might hurt you, Kagome, or Shippo like that."

"For someone who doesn't care about us, you don't want to hurt us...and what about Miroku?"

"I'm likely to hurt him like this, that lecher..." Inu-Yasha growled.

"You hate him that much, don't you, Inu-Yasha?" Sango asked innocently.

"I hate him for trying to use Kagome for..."

"Yeah, he can be a total hentai. But if he ever tried anything with Kagome, you'd kill him, right?" Sango asked.

"Hai."

"Then you love Kagome. When we go back to them, grab her and kiss her with all the love you've got for her, and just admit you love her you baka."

"...I don't love her." Inu-Yasha said. 'Or do I..? I don't even know...' he thought to himself after saying that he didn't love her.

"Whatever, I know you do love her, and you want to be with her."

Inu-Yasha was about to deny that when his ears twitched, and, to his surprise, he caught a scent that didn't sit well with him. Placing his hand on Tetsusaiga's hilt he pulled the blade. "He's here..." he said to Sango, who quickly pulled her boomerang, removing her Kimono, revealing her battle armor. "Show yourself, Naraku! Come out, you fucking bastard!!!!!!"

"This is not good.." Sango said softly as the two leapt down from the tree.

"Watch my back, and I'll watch your's." Inu-Yasha said softly.

"Hai!" was the last word from either as Naraku appeared before the two warriors.
