Chapter One

The stoic demon stalked on near silent feet through the halls of his newly conquered palace. The north had been a disappointing campaign, over all too quickly. The bears hadn't been strong, or clever or even enough to make him break a sweat. With an absent gesture, he flicked the blood from his claws.

He wanted a bath, to wipe away the stink of bear. Not that it would do much good, the entire household reeked of the unwashed scent. His elegant nose wrinkled slightly at it and only momentarily. A demon of his stature had no time for such frivolous displays.

The north had fallen and now belonged to him. Per his father's agreement, Toga, the heir to the west was now also lord of the north. The change taking less than a handful of hours and a small regiment of men. Half of those men were even now scouring the surrounding mountains and forests for the fleeing bear youkai.

The courtyard was littered with massive furred corpses and a few in humanoid form. They would be piled high and burned by dawn, downwind of the castle of course. Toga let his youkai flare and race through the palace. No, there was no longer any threat here. None that would ever match him.

"My lord" came the familiar voice of Yoshiro. Yoshiro was Rin's youngest and most gifted son. He was Toga's captain and close confidant. That he was human mattered little for he knew his lord's desires and often had them filled before being asked.

Toga looked over at the dark haired man, nearing his late twenties by human standards, while Toga himself was nearing his seventies. "What is it Yoshiro?" he asked. The captain bowed and held forth a sheaf of reports for him to read. "The reports on the stocks and resources of the area. As well as the number of souls within your borders" he replied.

Toga nodded, taking the papers with a clawed hand, he read through them swiftly. The region was rich, teeming with resources that the bears had apparently been too dull-minded to tap. The people they lorded over had suffered for that. No matter. It would be remedied in short time.

"What else?" he asked his captain again. Yoshiro stood straight, "The dead are being carted out of the palace walls as we speak. There is a cliff not far from here, they will be burned there and the ashes scattered to the wind. The remaining servants have been assembled as your ordered. They await you". The captain was quick and forthright in giving his leader his reports.

Toga nodded, "I shall be there shortly. Prepare a cleaning detail Toshiro. I can't stand the smell of bears. Taisha will arrive in a few days time and she will handle the majority of the issue then, but until then, have the men clean the chambers and the common areas.".

Yoshiro nodded and hurried to see it done. The missive had already been sent to the west, and by tomorrow night they would know of Toga's victory. However, knowing Taisha, she was already en route. No one knew the aloof lord better than the green eyed goddess who was his twin.

Toga glanced at the bear youkai and the few humans that had been gathered for him. He would allow a few of them to stay if he felt they were trustworthy. If he deemed them otherwise, they would be killed. Simple, efficient and much easier than allowing them revenge. His golden eyes swept over them, noting that they were all pitifully garbed in tattered clothing and were as dirty as the floor beneath his feet.

It was not like this in the west. It was cleaner and he looked over at Yoshiro when he spoke next. "All those living within these walls will bathe at least once a day, laundry will be done daily and only clean clothing worn. The castle will be cleaned daily and waste will be destroyed. Understood?"

Yoshiro made mental notes to pass to the staff. Toga let his youkai wrap around a shivering human girl. "Who are you?" he demanded, his tone hard. She jumped at the sound of it, and stared at the floor, "Mi….Miyame" she whispered at last. Toga folded his arms across his chest. "Your position?" he asked. Her dark hair was tied back in a rag, "I assist the cook" she told him.

Toga took in her unkempt appearance and frowned. Something this dirty was not going anywhere near his food. His youkai showed that she was no danger to him or anyone else. "You will bathe, at once, I will not have filth near my food" he barked. She bowed so low from her position on the floor that her forehead met stone.

For the next half hour he repeated the process with the remaining staff. So far he'd elected to spare half. His last decision stood before him. Her back straight, her gaze locked straight forward. His eyes took in all of her. She was heavier built than the other maids, as though her days were filled with rigorous exercise.

She might have been pretty under that layer of dirt, if not for the livid scar that marred half of her upper face. She'd lost an eye to whoever had attacked. It was nearly healed, but he could tell that it was not an old wound. His gaze fell to her hands next and narrowed at the callouses he found there.

"Your name" he bit out. This one was no maid. This was clearly a fighter. "Abiharu, though most simply call me Haru, Inu-Sama" she replied, her voice devoid of emotion. He growled softly but she remained as she was. "You manner tells me you are no maid but a soldier" he told her, his voice filled with deadly intent.

Abiharu answered him honestly, "I was a soldier, now I am a maid Inu-sama" she assured him. He could detect no scent of deceit on her. As a soldier she had to know that the most likely choice he would make would be her death, why then had she not taken the chance and fled? Lied? Anything but remain there?

"Why are you a maid?" he asked, he disliked mysteries and she was becoming one before his eyes. "It Is part of my punishment" she told him. His attention pricked he circled around her, "Tell me. I am losing my patience with you". She blinked, "I was an archer but I missed my mark and I was punished by Soji-Sama".

How had the bear lord punished her? Toga asked that very questions. Haru grimaced slightly, her composure cracking slightly, "He took my eye Inu-Sama and then said I must be a maid since I had no other use" she replied. Toga didn't betray his thoughts as he listened to her. "Were you any good?" he asked.

Haru seemed to stiffen with pride, "I was his top shot" she told him. Toga eyed her carefully, "Then why take your eye? Many an archer has missed the mark" he asked. She hung her head, "A visiting lord came and they made a wager on my skill, but my concentration was off and I missed. I shamed my lord" she whispered.

Toga studied her in silence for a moment before she moved and he watched, "Where are you going Haru?" Yoshiro asked. She met the human's eyes sadly, "To the courtyard of course, I accept Inu-sama's judgement" she told him. Toga growled at her in warning and she paused, "Of course you will Haru. When I give it, you will obey" he told her.

He made his decision a moment later. "You will report the lists tomorrow and work to regain your skill. You will be my archer, is that clear?". She blushed under his scrutiny, "But my lord, I have only one eye" she reminded him. Toga glared at her, "I am aware of that Haru. You are dismissed" his tone was colder than winter wind.

To his surprise Haru smiled softly, "Thank you Inu-sama" she whispered, bowing before him. He shifted away from her, "Toga. You may call me Toga-sama" he muttered. She nodded and fled the hall. Yoshiro watched her go. His lord was ever a mystery, cold, arctically cold and yet he had not only restored the woman's life but her pride as well.
