Sesshoumaru expected the missive long before it came. His son could not help but conquer it was, quite literally in his blood. His daughter Taisha had been scouring the region for suitable housekeepers since Toga's departure and now she was gone. Headed north with enough maids to clean the entire western empire.
Ayeka hoped that the gaining of his own territories would appease her quiet son, but no, he was every bit his father's son and was determined to go abroad. She had merely nodded when Sesshoumaru told her to leave it alone. It was doubtful that any harm could befall his children in the world, they were not weak. They merely had cases of wanderlust, it seemed to plague the house of the west.
True to her word, Taisha arrived to inspect the northern palace a mere three days later. She barked orders like a battlefield commander and soon the grime of ages had been scoured from the fortress. With a sniff she pronounced it habitable.
Toga read through reports over dinner before passing them to her. As his regent she had need of the information. "I will leave at the end of the month Taisha. By then all the bears that had escaped should be dealt with" he told her. Taisha sipped her sake and eyed him, "And how long will you be gone?" she asked. He shrugged, "I have no answer" he said honestly.
Taisha nodded, "I shall hold your lands for you" she promised. Toga smiled at her, of course she would. He knew something was on her mind and so he dismissed the others. When they were gone he turned his unreadable golden eyes to her. "Say it Taisha" he commanded.
She shrugged, "Say what brother of mine?" she purred. He growled at her and she growled right back. "Whatever is on your mind, say it Taisha". She set her cup aside and glared at him. "What are you going to find out there?" she demanded, "What do those borders hold for you that these do not?" Toga sighed, "An absence of father" he replied softly.
Green eyes went wide at his words. Her silver braids shook against her cheeks, "What? Why would you say something like that?" she asked him. He glared at her, "I have no intention or desire to fight our father Taisha calm yourself, I simply cannot live in his shadow anymore".
Taisha rose from her seat, "Father loves you" she whispered to him and Toga nodded, "I know that, it's why I have to go. I can't bear to remain and resent him for only ever being his son. It's the same reason Ryu left". Taisha understood his feelings, she had long grown irritated with the fact that to the world they lived in she was not Taisha-sama, she was the daughter of Sesshoumaru-sama.
"You are the heir, the prince of his empire" she reminded him softly. Toga turned his gaze to the window, "And it's that alone that has kept me here this long. I must be something more than my father's son". Taisha felt the wetness shimmer in her eyes and nodded, so his family did matter to him. He wanted to find himself. She could accept that, she wondered if she might ever have the chance to do the same.
In the month that followed Taisha took control of the house. Yoshiro kept an eye on the troops and Haru had become his helpmate in such matters. She was a good archer and though in the beginning he seriously doubted her ability to regain her skill, she had. Under Toga's watchful eye, she had risen to her former glory and because of that she loved him and his house with her whole being.
She truly believed in her service to him and when he asked if she would serve Taisha as well she'd pledged herself at once. They had stood on the steps of the palace to see him off. Toga, had waved and grasped the reigns of his oni horse and rose into the air. No one knew when he'd return, only that he would and while his absence filled their hearts with sadness, their efforts him went on.
Before Taisha had realized it nearly fifty years had passed. The palace had changed, filled with the fruit of her labors for the land. Silken cushions and glass lanterns filled the palace. She missed her brother, she missed home, even if mother and father did visit. Haru and Yoshiro had married and now he was gone and his children served her. She missed him too. She and Haru more than lady and servant now, but family and friends.
The last word they had received from Toga indicated he had reached continent and traveled along the silk road into other lands. He sent trunks of treasures back and Taisha could only hope that he would soon find what he sought.
Toga knelt near a small lake and dipped his hand into the cool water, wiping the back of his neck. He was returning to the north for a while. He'd been away for some time. He'd crossed into places wild and untamed and he'd fought demons and humans alike. Some actually a challenge to him.
Whispers of him rose around fires at night. The most feared demon, a creature swathed in mystery and shadow. A demon prince from far away. He had wanted to hear his name without reference to his family fall from the lips of others and now that it did… well it simply wasn't enough.
He'd journeyed to an island or green shrouded in mist where people danced around fires and warriors painted themselves blue. He knew from his mother's stories that this place was where her modern family had come from. The isle of Innish, it would one day be called Ireland.
He had found it to be beautiful, a place that hummed with magic and song. A place where a demon like himself was content to linger and so he had, for nearly thirty years. He'd learned many languages in his travels and he'd found allies in the places he had been.
For him, time held no meaning but for the ones he met, it did. It was this that prompted him to return home. He smiled wryly as he thought of the brother he had roaming the wide world. Ryu and Kurama were as infamous for thievery as he was for power and slaughter. Strange that they hadn't crossed paths in all this time. But then Ryu was often on the roads that led to famed treasures and he was not.
He had just leaned against a tree when a sharp cry rang through the air and Toga was on his feet and running toward the sound. He leapt through the trees to land gracefully in a small woodland clearing where a woman was huddled among the moss and ferns, two men over her.
Her little cries and thrashing did nothing to dissuade them from pawing at her. Toga felt his eyes bleed red and he growled loudly. The movements in the ferns stopped and two grubby faces turned toward him. He listened to them babble to each other. They said he was a god come to punish them for touching a blessed child. His hand moved to the hilt of his katana. The demonic sword singing under his touch, demanding blood.
"What are you doing?" he demanded of them, in their language. They flinched under the power of his tone. His youki snapped around him, filling the clearing and making the trees shiver. They whimpered and he growled, "I will kill you" he told them, "I want to hear what you have to say".
"Are you a god?" one of them stammered out, feeling slightly braver. He looked like a god, all tall and shining. Toga shook his head and they lunged at him, short blades drawn, he turned and angled his blade. The air was filled with the hiss of steel and the crackle of youki. Then came the wet sounds of blood and bodies hitting the earth. Toga stared down at the dying men. "Are… you …a…god?" the one asked again and Toga smiled cruelly down at him. "I'm a devil" he replied.
He turned back to the woman when he heard her stumbling movements. She was bleeding and he moved to her side. She stiffened when he reached for her and he supposed that his appearance and the slaughter of the men upset her. He grabbed her arm and she fought him like a hellcat.
Toga was somewhat surprised to be thanked in such a way, "I'll not harm you woman cease your struggles" he barked out. She stiffened in his grasp, "Your voice…" she whispered, "Who are you? Where have you come from?" Her fear was rising again. Her head was bowed and all he could see was golden hair and pale flesh.
"I am Lord Toga" he told her, "I come from a land called Japan". She lifted her hands slowly, "You feel odd" she told him in a soft voice, "Powerful". He blinked. Of course he did, he was powerful. How did she feel that though. "Look at me woman" he commanded and she shook her head.
Toga growled softly at her, "What is your name?" he tried. She reached a hand out behind her to brush over the ferns and he was struck by her odd actions. "I… am …Aislin" she told him quietly. "You are injured Aislin, I need to attend your wounds" he told her.
He spoke quietly, gently. He supposed that she was frightened after such an ordeal. He sighed, women were odd. Human women more so. "Come, we'll dress your wounds by the stream" he told her and began to walk that way. A second later he heard her hit the ground and she made a choking sound.
Toga looked over his shoulder to see her sprawled across the cleaved bodies. She was now soiled with their blood as well. "What the hell?" he asked, "Did you trip?" She said nothing but nodded. He extended his hand to her, but she didn't take it. He watched her try to stand on her own. She was feeling her way to level ground.
Toga watched her with narrowing eyes. The scent of her tears caught him and he reached down to pull her up. She jumped at his touch and he growled softly again. "I'm sorry," she whispered, "I didn’t know you were that close" . How the hell could she not have, he was standing right in front of her?
Toga tipped her head back, maybe she had taken a blow to the head. Her lashes lay against her cheeks. She had some blood on her face but he didn't see anything serious. His gaze swept over her and he was shocked by what he saw. The woman in his arms was… beautiful. Her scent was soft and sweet. His arms tightened instinctively around her.
"You need to watch where you are going" he scolded lightly, not liking his reaction to her. She chuckled mirthlessly and he lifted an eyebrow in question. "What is funny woman?" he demanded. Aislin lifted her head again and opened her eyes. Toga stared at the brilliant lavender of her eyes.
They were strange and new and unexpected. Looking closer he noticed something else. They showed no sign of life. She didn't see him as a demon, or a man, or anything like that. She blinked at him, but she didn't see him…couldn't see him at all. Aislin, was blind.
