Chapter 5: The Outbreak

~ “Higarashi!” Sasaki yelled as he stormed to Kagome’s desk. “Higarashi, I asked for the reports on the cannibal case hours ago!”
“I’m sorry Sasaki. I haven’t finished it yet.” Kagome replied, her tone lethargic and not in the mood for fighting.
“Higarashi, if you don’t feel as though you can handle the stress of this case, I can give it to Soko.”
“If you feel as though Soko would be better suited for the job, by all means give it to him.”
“Okay Higarashi what’s wrong? You aren’t fighting me today.”
“I’m not in the mood for it Sergeant.” Kagome took a sip of her coffee, trying to be as vague as possible.
“Okay. I want you on the case Kagome, but if you want someone to help you, I’m throwing Soko in.”
“Okay.”
“All right.” Sasaki stood up and turned to leave. “Get some rest Higarashi and figure out just what’s wrong okay? I need you at your best.”
“Yes Sir.”
~*~
“They gave me a partner today.” Kagome said as she picked at her salad.
“Cool. Who?” Inuyasha asked, trying not to act awkward.
“His names Soko, Kouga. Seems nice I guess.” Kagome shrugged.
“Are you still thinking about –?”
“Yes. I want to do something.” Kagome finally seemed to loose her lazy, non-caring tone. “I can’t just let her be walking around Inuyasha.”
“I don’t want to get you involved Kags.”
“Inuyasha, I am involved. I want to be involved. Because-” Kagome couldn’t bring herself to say that she loved him. It was too much. “Because we’re together, and I want to help you.”
“I know Kags; but you can’t. I’ll fix it.”
“How?”
“I don’t know. Somehow it will work out. Just forget Kikyou all right?”
“Yea. She’s forgotten.” Kagome smiled half-heartedly and took a sip of water.
“So, Kouga you say? What’s he like?”
~.~
“All right Higarashi, this is how I see it, we work together to solve the crime.” Kouga stated, sitting across from Kagome in her office.
“Wow. That is… sheer brilliance.” Kagome couldn’t believe the idiot they had paired her with. How Kouga had passed the test for detective she would never understand. “Now, I’m going to continue reviewing the documents, if you’ll excuse me.”
“Shouldn’t we look through them together?” Kouga asked, apparently not getting the hint that Kagome didn’t want him around.
“No. I’m much better at working on my own.”
“But I’m your partner.”
“Right.” Kagome sighed, she would have to get over it and work with him. “So lets look at the documents.”
~
Kagome met Inuyasha at the restaurant at eight o’clock. The problem with this is that the reservation was for seven thirty. Kagome sat across from Inuyasha without saying a word. He had a look on his face, a look that was becoming increasingly common with every missed dinner date. She cast her eyes down and bit her bottom lip. She always looked so innocent when she had upset Inuyasha.
“I took the liberty of ordering you chicken parm.” He said, taking her hand. Kagome smiled, clasping his hand with hers. “How was work?”
“Awful. The guy they got workin’ with me is a complete idiot. He wouldn’t be able to tell a homicide from a suicide. He’s so… newbie. He just drives me crazy! And we spent like four hours today looking at the same documents that I could have looked over in like half an hour and gotten on with my life. God! He is just so annoying.” Kagome sighed, she felt good to get all that out of the way. “How was your day?”
“Fine.” Inuyasha smiled. “I just had to finish up the cottage project and Jeremy took over for me, so I could have tomorrow off.”
“That’s cool. I have tomorrow off also. Kouga is going to be looking over all the things we covered today and I see no reason to go in.” Kagome smiled at Inuyasha. “We should do something.”
“Yea definitely. I just have one quick thing to do in the morning.”
“Does it involve -?”
“Yea.”~~ Kagome’s POV ~~
As time passed and I had to work more and more with Kouga, I realized he wasn’t as stupid as I thought he was. He just didn’t always say the smartest things. But inside his head, he really did have some good ideas.
Also, as time went on, I began thinking a lot about me and Inuyasha and the Hiyado case. I had come to grips with the fact that he wouldn’t let me help him… but I couldn’t accept that. There was still this undying want to make everything better and be sure that he was safe and out of harms way. From what I knew about Kikyou Hiyado she was not one to trifle with… and from what I knew about her relationship with Inuyasha, I had my work cut out for me.
~ End Kags POV ~ “Higarashi, we have a problem.”
“What is it Sir?” Kagome asked, looking up from her desk.
“There’s been…”
“Sasaki? What’s wrong?”
“There’s been… an outbreak… it’s not contained… it’s spreading… we don’t know what to do… we need everyone on full alert. Take your family and friends, and find a safe and secure location. Don’t hang around… go! If this blows over, or we need you, I’ll call you. But go Higarashi! You’re too intelligent and valuable to us to be risked. GO!”
Kagome picked up her purse and nodded quickly as she ran out the door. She had never seen her boss look so panicked. She had no choice but to listen to him. She ran to her car and drove herself home. She drove as fast as she could. Inuyasha was still at work.
“Inuyasha! Come home now… please… leave work and just come home to me!” she hung up the phone and dialed her mother. She didn’t know what was going on, but she was going to take Sasaki’s words to heart.
