Now or Never

How did that happen? Kagome stared up aimlessly into the ceiling making friends with the foreign shadows. Inuyasha slept haphazardly with a single leg flung over her, keeping a deep rhythm as he slept soundly. Her body still tingled and throbbed everywhere he had touched her; it felt like champagne bubbles popping all around her. She felt content. She inhaled loudly half hoping to wake Inuyasha, she had to go home. Does this mean that their feud was over? And what of their charade? Kagome turned her head away from the ceiling and looked at a sleeping Inuyasha. His silver hair laid softly over half his face shrouding it in mystery. His black eyelashes fluttered softly as he slept deeply.
“Oh great.” She groaned as she shifted his dead weight. As peaceful as he looked, deep down inside she found some pleasure in waking him. “Get up...” she shoved him slightly but he only snorted.
She pushed harder. “Inuyasha!” She tried to lift his leg off her but his cumbersome weight pinned her down. Sighing deeply she relaxed. Then gearing up, she dug her nails into his leg.
“Shit!!!!” Inuyasha exclaimed as he jumped up with great urgency. “What the hell was that for?!” He rubbed his leg where she had stabbed him.
“I have to get up. I have to go home.”
“No you don't” He shifted and held on to her hand, reluctant to let go. “I'm sure your mom wouldn't mind if you slept over by us. For one last time?”
Kagome shifted her eyes as she sat up. He did the same after rolling his weight off her. She slowly began to reach for her underwear. “I shouldn't...”
“Why not?” He twiddled his thumbs nervously. “We've never spent an entire night together.”
Kagome thought back to the rambunctious night in her room where God knows what hour he had slipped out.
“I'm sure we have....”
“Well one more time for old time's sake?” he whined.
Kagome looked at him slowly. It was getting harder and harder to refuse him. She wanted to look away but those amber eyes slowly drew her in. She wanted to get away but...
“Inuyasha...” She whispered before looking away. “Stop.”
“What?” He perked his eye brows ready to taunt her but when he saw the glossy look in her eyes, the same look she had when she walked out on him. “Kagome, what's the matter?”
She pulled her clothes towards her from off the floor and began pulling her blouse on. Not uttering a word, she stood up and pulled on her skirt, then bundling her undergarments and her sandals in her hands she looked down at Inuyasha.
“I don't want you to think I'm running out on you.” She spoke quickly and nervously. “I just....” She looked around. “I just need to go home.” She turned to run but stopped. “Come see me before I leave, please?” She turned and disappeared down the hall way, leaving Inuyasha with nothing but the scent of her on has skin.

Kagome never felt so flustered in her life. What the hell was that? She felt anxiety rise in her chest as she backed out of the parking lot. She needed air. Lowering her windows, she took huge gulps of air trying to calm herself but seeing Inuyasha's car parked across the lot, she felt it again. The anxiety began to rise again, no. It was something else..... Swallowing hard she closed her eyes for a minute and calmed down. The car engine purred as it idled. It was calming. It went away. She swallowed again before driving off. She needed to get home.

“Mom?” Her voice sounded just as alien as the word itself. Her voice simply echoed in the vast parlour, but then again it was almost mid night. She sighed and began trudging up the stairs. Suddenly she stopped. Sota stood at the top of the stairs rubbing his eyes. A bit of resentment boiled in her. Mommy's king…
“Its 12 in the morning….” He groaned. “Why would mom or anyone be up Kagome?”
She opened her mouth to retort cynically but instead she closed it again and smiled.
“Sorry for waking you. I didn't know it was so late.” Taking the stairs two at a time, she wrapped her arms around him and led him back to his room. Then creeping down the hall way she creaked her mother's door open. A motionless figure laid slumped in the bed and deep breathing emanated from the room. She really wanted to talk right now but something just told her not to wake her mother. She was probably tired from having to be packing an entire household to move half way across the world. Two days. That's all that was left. This damn hick town.... she loved it. Even that dumb rock she had spent hours looking at. There were multiple reasons why she didn't want to but one main one was him. Reaching her own room, she looked up and saw the curly letters to spell out `Kagome's room.' That made her smile. She wondered if she could bring the door with her.

`Why are all these people here mommy?'
Her mother shifted beside in her full black suit sniffling, then turning slowly she looked down on her with red puffy eyes.
`And what's that?'
A shiny black box rolled past her being pulled by three men.
`Mommy...'
A strange cold enveloped her as her mother broke out into a new set of tears.
`Daddy?' she asked cautiously.
No reply.
`Daddy? Where is my daddy?!'
Her frantic cries echoed in the chapel. Weird faces looked on, pitying her as if they could console her through their thoughts and comfort her with whispers. As if she was too young to know, too young to understand. But she knew. Her mom had said it but it was a lie, wasn't it?
`It's not true mommy! Where's daddy?!'
The black box seemed to grin at her misery and mock her. She hated it. It was ugly. She wanted it gone but in a sense she wanted it to stay. She knew it was connected to his disappearance. Connected to all these strange people. Connected to her mother's crying. He was gone...
She knew he was really gone.

She opened the room door. The shadows danced out on the floor from her open window before she turned the light on dispersing them. The room was eerily neat since most of her things were already packed away. Dumping herself on the bed, she reached for the remote and turned on the TV. She just needed the noise. Stripping herself, she headed to the bathroom.
Inuyasha stood behind the huge oak tree near Kagome's window. He'd been there watching the shadows in her room for almost an hour until she finally turned off the lights and only the television still played. Sighing and kicking some dirt he strode over to the servants' entrance. Opening the window closest to the door, he turned the lock and opened the door. He had secretly held his breath for an alarm to go off but as with the night of her party, none did. Slipping into the dark, he made his way to the parlour by pure memory. Taking soft steps up the stairs, he made his way to her room by listening out for the television. Creaking open the door, he knew she was sleeping. The figure on the bed stayed still even when he padded across the room to the bed. He looked at her saturnine face. Why did she look like that?
“Kagome?” He touched her face slowly. Apparently she wasn't in deep sleep because her eyes fluttered open and so did her mouth. Inuyasha quickly placed his hand over her mouth to muffle her screams. She began to raise her hands to hit him until she saw who it was. He smiled slowly and removed his hand.
“What the hell are you doing in here?!” She whispered in a harsh tone. She shifted he weight in the bed and sat up. Inuyasha coolly slipped his hands into his pockets and smiled down at her without saying a word. “Are you just going to stare at me? Why are you here?!” she demanded, her voice growing in strength.
“Do you wanna go for a walk?” he asked innocently, still maintaining the boyish smile he wore. Kagome stared at him, mouth agape for a few more minutes before answering.
“Are you serious? It's like one in the morning!”
“Actually it's closer to two.” His grin grew wider. Maybe it was infectious because soon, Kagome began to smile too. Slowly she pushed the covers down to her waist.
“Either I'm dreaming or you've gone mad.”
“A bit of both.” He stepped back to allow her to come out of the bed. She stood before him in a black high neck night gown that flowed down to her ankles. If it wasn't for its lack of sleeves she would have looked like a nun. And the hair, the hair saved her. Her raven black hair cascaded down her back very tousled and unkempt. She ran her hand through her hair as her eyes scanned the ground in the dark looking for what he soon found out to be her slippers. She slipped them on quickly and walked back over to him.
“You know I have a shirt for you but I think it's already packed away.”
Inuyasha turned to her before lowering his lips to hers and placing a soft kiss on them. “That's my gift from you to me.”
He wore a shirt similar to the one she was referring to but this one was a light blue. He wore cargo pants and opened toed sandals making it apparent that he had planned this little excursion. Kagome smiled to herself as his face glowed in the aftermath of their kiss. She felt a sudden urge to run her hand through his hair but he had it in a single braid down his back. “You still think it's a dream?” He asked her slowly moving towards the door.
“I hope to god not.” She smiled and followed his movements to the door because they both knew that if they stayed in the room much longer, they probably wouldn't end up leaving at all.
They both stepped out into the cool night and inhaled. The calming night breeze swept between them as the walk further and further away from the house.
“It would be really nice to go for a ride now.” Kagome lamented.
“Neither you nor the horse could see where you were heading and something worse than what happened the day I met you would happen again. You wanna hurt yourself again?”
“It was just a thought... I didn't say I was going to.” She retorted. “It's just a beautiful night.” She sighed longingly. “So where are we going?”
“For a walk.” He reached out and held on to her hand, linking her fingers with his.
“That's it?”
“That's it.” He said with finality pulling her closer to him. The continued walking in the silence just enjoying each other's company. Before they knew it, they had reached the property line. Inuyasha reached out and touched the rustic wooden fence that cut the property off from the forestry behind it. It was rough and untreated, giving the exact impression to the ranch style house it enclosed. Inuyasha released her hand and hoisted himself onto the fence, sitting comfortably.
“You wanna come on up?” he queried.
“I'm not even in a skirt...” she responded. “I'm wearing my nightgown. There are a million and one things that could happen to ruin this moment.”
He looked at her cynically for minute before jumping off the fence. “We're going over.” And before she could protest he lifted her up over his shoulder, and in the blink of an eye, he leaped over the fence.
Landing on his feet gracefully, he gently placed her down on the ground. The dried leaves falling from the trees, signalling the end of summer crunched as her slippers crushed them. Huffing slightly, she grimaced at him.
“You could give me warning before you do things like that…”
“No I can't. You would have objected and some disagreement would have arisen. Am I right?” He raised an eyebrow in contempt.
Kagome's face furrowed in frustration as she opened her mouth to retaliate. “No… Well yeah.”
She smiled as his eyebrow lowered slowly and his face relaxed with that surprising dose of victory. He was obviously speechless as her brushed past her into the dense forestry. Kagome, slightly flustered, turned and bolted after him. “Wait! Where are you going?”
“Keep your voice down before you wake people.” He whispered calmly.
“No one can hear us out here in the middle of the woods. Will you please slow down?!”
She tried to keep the pace but her long gown restricted any movement out of the stretch of cloth and on more than one occasion, she almost flew face first into the damp forest floor.
Huffing and puffing, she reached out and cleared the last set of bushes in front of her. By now she has lost sight of Inuyasha but she could still hear his heavy footfalls ahead of him. Bursting through the bushes, she ran blindly into him. They were in the clearing where the lake stood placid and pristine. The lake had become more than just a still body of water to the both of them. It was now a symbol of what they had become, from the first instant he nearly killed her to now. There was much significance to the moment they were about to share. Coming to stand beside him, she studied his ridged form. The way his hands were shoved into his pockets, the way his facial features were stone cold and set in concentration, his breath even and deep, his eyes aimless in thought.
“It's really nice out here.” She commented in a low voice. She didn't expect him to reply and he didn't. The silence stretched on until he slowly took his hands out of his pockets and brushed her fingers before sighing loudly.
“It really is pretty.” He kicked a pebble on the shore into the water. Then grasping her hand in his, he pulled her closer to him. The full moon reflected upon the surface of the lake and in the refracted light from the moon, his hair looked dark... almost black. “It's a full moon tonight.” He said it as if he was stating more than a fact.
“What does that mean?” Kagome asked softly trying not to upset the mood. Inuyasha only sniffled slightly.
“It's been an entire summer hasn't it?
This time she knew exactly what he meant. “Yeah it has. It doesn't feel like it though.”
“No it doesn't. I'm going to miss you though. Alot.”
She turned her head slightly to face him. “Really? I thought that you'd just move on with some other girl.”
Inuyasha's mind quickly flashed to Amanda waiting patiently in the sidelines. “No. Contrary to what you may believe, I didn't' think of this as just a charade. You actually have meaning to me. This summer has had more meaning to me than many significant moments in my life.”
“Don't you think your pushing it slightly? I'm just another girl. From what I've heard, you have them flocking you. I really don't mean that much to you. Do I?”
“More than you know. All those girls that are flocking mean nothing to me.”
“You're only saying this shit now because of the mood. Trust me. Tomorrow morning you'll wake up and none of this will matter. Soon I'll be gone and out of your life. Everything will fall back into place, as it was before I was here.” She slipped her hand out of his obviously uncomfortable with the way the situation was turning out. Inuyasha turned to her in one clean fluid moment.
“That's what you think!” The pitch of his voice had risen significantly. “Kagome, I'd much rather you not go back. Really.”
“What are you saying?” She slowly backed away from him, slightly scared of what he was capable of doing.
“Stay here with me. You're 18. Don't you have legal rights to your father's company now? Stay here in the ranch; in America. You could run the branch over here, manage the business over here.”
“You're asking me to stay here in America?
“Yes. We could be together officially.” His frantic voice had now become calm again.
“That's alot you're asking of me Inuyasha. You're asking me to uproot my entire life to test a theory. To displace myself on something that might not work.”
“Don't you even want to know?” He turned back to the lake.
“Know what?” she hesitantly asked.
“What can become of us? You know all the shit we've been through this summer that there must be a connection. Don't you wanna know if it's real?”
“I already know it was just a summer thing. There is nothing else to find out Inuyasha.” Her voice had cracked slightly. She had hoped that Inuyasha hadn't heard it but he had.
“Yes there is. And you do want to find out. You're just scared.” He walked over to where she was standing, a few feet away from him. He enveloped her in his arms and nuzzled his face in her rouge hair. “Why would you be scared?”
“I'm not scared.” She said defiantly.
“Kagome.” He freed his hand and lifted her face to him. He looked into her brown eyes for a minute. “I love you.” He slowly kissed her waiting lips wanting to savour the moments of the words before she had the chance to ruin it like he knew she would. He himself couldn't believe he had said that. He had contemplating how he felt about her for a long time but that was the last thing he expected to say. Maybe she'd say the same thing... He savoured her lips a bit longer before he moved back. Her glossy eyes looked up at him in shock and bewilderment and her lips stayed parted as if she wanted to say something. Her breathing was shallow until she licked her lips and closed her eyes.
“Don't say that. You don't mean it.”
“Yes I do.”
“How do you know that?” her voice quivered with her bottom lip.
“I just do. And now you need to give it a chance. Stay.” That was all he said before he let her go.
She covered her mouth slowly trying to contain her surprise before her hands fell pliantly to her side.
“You don't know how much I've wanted to hear you say that.”
“And I just did.”
“But saying it is alot easier than having to prove it. It's not that I don't feel it...”
“Then say it.” He interrupted. He shoved his hand in her pocket as if he was contesting her.
“It's not that easy...”
“Yes it is. Just open your mouth and say it.” He strode over to her and spun her around so that her back was to him and she was looking out at the lake. He slowly began to place soft kisses along her neck all the way down to her shoulders, moving the high neck line of her night gown out of the way so that he could be in direct contact with her skin. She smelled of vanilla and the clean crisp night air. He wanted to partake of her but after the scene in the restaurant and after what he just told her, he knew he was treading on thin ice. His kisses grew more erotic and lingering as he began to massage her shoulders, relaxing her. “Do you love me?” He asked in a husky voice that sent shivers down Kagome's spine. A soft moan escaped her lips.
“Say it.” He whispered again as her knees buckled. He moved from one side of her neck to the other not missing a single beat. “Say it.” He repeated in her other ear, blowing warm air along the base of her neck before nipping her ear lobe. She moaned a little louder before mumbling something. Inuyasha slipped his hand down her back to her hips where he pulled her body closer to his. “I didn't quite catch that.”
“I love you Inuyasha. I do.” She moaned erotically.
“Don't say it because I'm asking you to. Say it because you mean it.”
“Jesus Inuyasha. You know I do. You've always known I do. I love you. You're a real jerk and I really can't stand you sometimes but I really, really love you.”
He stopped kissing her and simply wrapped his hands around her waist. Then resting his chin on her shoulder, he smiled. “It's a full moon out tonight.”
“What the hell does that mean?” she cupped her hands over his. “You keep saying that.”
“My mother used to tell me that the full moon signifies new beginnings and fresh change. It's like a good omen to me. It helps reinforce my faith in my question. Please stay.”
“Inuyasha...”
“At least think about it.”
After a second of contemplating, she sighed. “I will.”
Squeezing her slightly, he showed his appreciation. “Now let's go for a swim.”
“Okay now I know you're crazy.” She giggled. She yawned. “I wanna sleep.”
“Fine. Let's go back.”
“Thanks for this.” Kagome whispered as she slid out of his arms. “It really means alot to me.”
Inuyasha only smiled before disappearing into the darkness of the woods leaving Kagome to play catch up, one again.
