The day was winding down and Sango was just about ready to head home. The day had been a long one for her. Working a double shift at Myoga's Mega Diner home of “Japan's greatest coffee cake” (Sango didn't think it was that great) would take a lot out of anyone. And it had been especially tiring not to mention boring that day for her since she didn't have Kagome working along side her. She had had to rush off on some sort of date with her boyfriend Hojo. So that left Sango all on her own.

Her eye's surveyed the diner and saw that there were only a few people left. Her brother Kohaku sat in the corner doing some homework. He had dropped by after school like he always does so that they could walk home together. There was a couple sitting by the window that Sango's eyes didn't linger on since they were having some major PDA that she did not wish to witness. And in the center of the diner sat an old man reading the paper. This was certainly slow compared to the rush of people she had to deal with just an hour ago. Things would probably remain quite at the diner for another hour before the dinner rush arrived. Hopefully by then Sango would be long gone.

Sango got out a rag and began to wipe off the counter. After she cleaned up and some one showed up to take over the place Sango could finally leave. `This job really doesn't pay enough' Sango thought as she wiped away an especially nasty glob of something into the trash. It wasn't like she needed the money either. Her father made quite a bit of money. But since she was a child he had never handed anything to her on a silver platter. He had made her get a job so she could better appreciate how easy she had things and didn't come out to be some spoiled brat. Sango was thankful for that. She hated the kind of girls that had everything and still wanted more and was glad that hadn't turned out to be her.

“How much longer Sis?” Kohaku asked. He had walked over to the counter and was now leaning against it looking very bored. “Not much” Sango replied. She turned around and threw the rag she had been using into a bowl of dirty ones. She heard the door to the dinner open behind her but payed little attention to it. The person who had entered took a couple steps toward the counter then stopped.

Bang

Sango turned toward her brother quickly enough to see a bullet fly through his shoulder. Sango was so shocked she could barely think. She jumped on top of her brother. But not before another bullet hit his other shoulder and stomach. “Kohaku!” Sango cried as she flew on top of him in an effort to shield him from the bullets. As they fell to the ground a bullet grazed over Sango's back. The pain was terrible but it was pushed to the back of Sango's mind as she looked down at her brother under her on the floor. “San..go..” He choked out, his voice just above a whisper. Tears fell from Sango's eyes and onto Kohaku's face. “I'm here Kohaku.” Sango said. And those were her last words to him.

Sango woke up with a searing pain in her back. She found herself in a white hospital room with a nurse standing next to her. The nurse was an older woman with long grey hair that she had tied back in a low pony tail. She was short and her face quite wrinkled her name tag read `Kaede'. She was injecting something into an IV that Sango saw she was hooked up to. A million thoughts and questions raced through Sango's mind. How had she gotten here? When? Where was she? What had happened? For a moment she couldn't remember. But the memory of her Kohaku dieing in front of her soon came rushing back. “My brother!?” Sango cried.

The nurse who hadn't noticed Sango had woken up looked over at her. The nurse's face looked puzzled for a moment surprised Sango was conscious. But the puzzled look soon melted away into one of great sympathy. “I'm sorry dear.” The nurse began. Sango started crying. “No…” Sango whispered. “I'm afraid when the ambulance arrived he was already dead and there was nothing we could do.” Sango broke down crying. Kaede put her arms around Sango and began to rub her back in a way that she hoped was comforting. “I'm afraid I have more bad news child.” The old woman said in a solemn voice. `What now?!' Sango thought. `How can this get any worse?' She asked herself before Kaede could tell her.

“I'm afraid that your father was also been murdered.” She told her.

How could this happen. Her brother was so young, only twelve. She had always been looking out for him. Since their mother had died giving birth to him that had left Sango to take care of her little brother. Now he was gone. She should have done some thing more to save him. But she couldn't protect him from that bastard that shoot and killed him. And now she finds out her father is dead too. `What am I going to do?' Sango wondered. Her life seemed hopeless. Her entire family was dead. Sango had never felt as alone in her entire life as she did in that moment and she did nothing but cry all day.

The next day Sango had managed to calm down some. She wasn't balling her eyes out anymore but she was haunted by images of her dieing brother. Thoughts of her dead family and revenge were all that went through her head. She ate very little of the breakfast she was given and it wasn't just because of the poor quality. The main reason was her almost complete loss of appetite. The doctors diagnosed it as a symptom of her deep depression. Which is to be expected of someone how has just lost their whole world. The doctors had little idea of how to help her. But the one thing that could manage to snap Sango's attention away from her sad and lonely thoughts wasn't anything medical.

The click of the door opening made Sango turn her head toward the entrance of her hospital room. Expecting to see just another doctor Sango received her first pleasant surprise in what seemed like an eternity. “Sango!” cried a tearful Kagome. Her best friend quickly ran over to her bed and gave her the tightest hug of her life. It was also the most painful as Kagome's arms were wrapped around the wound in her back and the pressure she was applying to would have been painful had she not just been shot. “I'm so sorry this happened to you Sango!” Kagome said her eyes still full of tears.

“They're both dead Kagome!” Sango said. She was crying now too. “Kohaku and my father.” Kagome nodded sadly and the two of them cried together for a while. Sango was glad someone could share in her pain. Kagome was the only person out side her family she was close to. Kagome also knew Kohaku and her father very well. She understood how close they had been and how wonderful they were. Anyone else would just be shedding crocodile tears.

Once they had dried their eyes Kagome asked how Sango was feeling. “I'm alright.” Sango told her. “Physically that is. The bullet only grazed my back. It won't leave any lasting effects except a nasty scar.” Kagome nodded and held her best friends hand to comfort her. She wasn't normally so quite but Kagome knew that Sango needed to talk now, not her.

“They said I was lucky Kagome. How can someone how just lost their whole family be lucky?” Sango asked. Kagome hated seeing her friend in so much pain and hated those doctors for saying something so stupid. Before Kagome could tell her so she was interrupted by Sango's door opening.

In stepped a man in his early forties he was about average height with black hair and a thick mustache. It was obvious he was a police officer since he was dressed in uniform. He walked over toward Sango and Kagome. “Sorry to interrupt.” He said, but didn't sound it. His voice was monotone and very formal. “I need to speak with Miss Yamamoto ask her a few questions.” He said staring at Kagome waiting for her to leave. Kagome didn't move from her seat next to Sango's bed however. So the officer remained silent

“Alright.” Sango said. “Go ahead.” She and Kagome glared at the officer waiting for him to speak, not wanting to be separated. The officer still said nothing. It seemed they were in a staring contest for over a minute before the officer said. “Alone.”

Kagome let out a long sigh. Sango looked over at her and gave her a nod to imply she could leave. “I'll get us some thing from the cafeteria.” Kagome said as she stood. She walked over and opened the door. “I'll be back in five minutes.” She said glaring at the officer. Sango was in a bad place and Kagome didn't want to leave her alone long with a stranger.

Once Kagome was gone the officer took the chair Kagome had been sitting and pulled it out so he could sit in it. He sat down and began speaking. “I assume you know I'm here about the attack on you and your brother.” The officer said. Sango flinched at the mention of her brother but nodded. “What do you know about it so far?” Sango asked.

“I'm here to ask you the questions.” He said.

“You answer mine first.” Sango said plainly.

“There isn't much I'm allowed to tell you.” The officer said. Sango just stared at him waiting for him to continue. He sighed and then went on “As you may know at almost the same time you and your brother were attacked your father was also attacked. We're certain they are connected. Someone obviously wanted your family dead and for the most part they got what they wanted.”

“These are all things I could have figured out on my own.” Sango said. “I want to know who is responsible for the deaths of my brother and father.”

“That I won't tell you till you've answered my questions.” The officer said. Sango rolled her eyes. “Fine.” She said.

“Did you see who attacked you and your brother at the diner?” The officer asked.

“No.” Sango said. All she had seen was a glimpse of him as she had wiped around to witness her brother being shot.

“Do you have any ideas who your father's enemies were business or other wise?” He asked.

“No, my father never talked about those sorts of things with me or my brother.” Sango said. She heard the officer whisper `damn' under his breath when she said this. “Now…do you have any who wanted my family dead?” Sango asked.

“Well… even though you were unable to identify the shooter at the diner there were three eye witnesses who were there that saw the whole thing. And we have two witnesses that can identify your father's shooter. We've managed to connect the two shooters. Apparently their both members of the spider gang. It's one the biggest and most dangerous gang's in town we've been after them for years.” The officer said.

“What does a gang want with my family?” Sango asked.

“That's the problem. We're not sure. A gang like the spider gang wouldn't be wasting its time just trying to kill off a couple of kids. So we know it has something to do with your father. The spider gang has been responsible for the deaths of dozens of politicians and big businessmen like your father over the last twenty years or so.” He said.

“Twenty years?!” Sango exclaimed.

“I told you we've been after this gang for a while. What we really need is to take down the leader. With what we've got now we can send those thugs that attacked you, your brother, and your father away to prison for so long that by the time they're released they won't even be able to lift a gun. But that's not enough. We need to get at the guy who's ordering all these hits. The spider gangs leader. Sending a couple of its members to the slammer will make the spider gang lay lower for a while. But it won't completely shut down until we've got their leader put away for good.” The officer explained.

“Alright.” Sango said. “So who is this leader?”

“Naraku that's his street name anyway, we believe that's its just alias. What his real name is, is a mystery. We don't even know what he looks like. But what we do know is that he has more money then the entire city of Tokyo and he's got half the city's gangsters at his command.” The officer said.

“I take it you're trying to tell me he's dangerous.” Sango said.

“Very.” said the officer.

“Well I'm not stupid I understood that I wasn't dealing with the tooth fairy shortly after I get shoot at.” Sango said a little annoyed.

“That's good.” said the officer. “I hope that means you won't object to a police officer or two standing guard over you.”

“What?” Sango asked. Before the Officer could say anything more about it Kagome came back with a couple of cups of hot tea. “I'll be leaving now Miss Yamamoto but before I go I need to leave these forms with you.” The officer said as he took out what must have been at least twenty forms from his uniform and placed them on the bed side table. “Try and fill them out over the next couple of days. Myself or another officer will be by to pick them up on Tuesday.” The officer continued as he head for the door while Kagome returned to her former seat. “Once you're released from hospital you need to report to the police station as soon as possible. Don't forget.” The officer added as he left.

Kagome handed Sango her tea. “With a bit of sugar and honey in it, the way you like.” Kagome said. Sango smiled and took the tea from Kagome. She really was her best friend and she knew everything about her. “So what happened once I left?” Kagome asked.

“He asked me some questions. He gave me some information about what happened to my family and the Spider gang.” Sango said.

“Spider gang?” Kagome said a bit confused. Sango explained everything thing she had just learned about Naraku and the Spider gang.

“So this Naraku guy? He's the one responsible for what happen to Kohaku and your dad?” Kagome asked. Sango nodded.

“Seems that way, and if it is I'll make sure he pays.” Sango said anger in her voice and Kagome could almost swear she saw fire in her eyes.

“Sango you're not thinking about taking this into your own hands are you? Naraku sounds dangerous and if he is the one responsible for the shootings then he's already almost killed you!” Kagome said.

“I'll be fine Kagome don't worry. Besides I'm only taking action if the police can't handle this on their own.” Sango said.

“That doesn't sound like you Sango.” Kagome said.

“Don't worry Kagome. I can't even do anything while I'm in the hospital. Plus that officer said something about starting to put body guard around me or something.” Sango said.

“Starting?” Kagome asked.

“Huh? Yeah, what do you mean?” Sango asked.

“Well…I didn't want to tell you this Sango but when I came to see you earlier today there was an officer standing guard out side your door and he was still there when I came back from the cafeteria.” Kagome said. Sango was shocked and sat there letting her anger at the sneaky police officer, the spider gang, and most of all Naraku fester.
