"Rin." Sesshoumaru turned and said, meaning for the girl to hurry up. Strange that Rin seem to always get distracted lately.
"Hai, coming." Rin said, and hurried to catch up with her lord.
They were walking through an extremely dense forest, and Rin's clothing keeps on getting caught on the branches, when she finally did reach Sesshoumaru, her kimono was torn and dirty, she blushed furiously. After all these years of following Sesshoumaru, she still managed to torn her clothing whenever she's walking through forests. It wasn't her fault though, She has no idea how the inu-youkai could possibly walk in the trees without getting even the tiniest speck on his clothes.
"Jaken will pick up something new for you in the nearest village," Sesshoumaru said, noting the girl's discomfort in her shabby clothes.
"Hai, arigato." Rin said, and silently followed the inu-youkai through the forest.
"What took you so long?" Jaken asked, "This is an important mission we're going on, we can not afford to wait for you to catch up with us just because of your little flowers and such."
"Hai, Gomen nasai." Rin said quietly.
"And you very well should be, we-"
"That's enough Jaken, be quiet." Sesshoumaru said in his very intimidating voice.
"Yes my lord, of course." Jaken said. It was somehow comical that Jaken should try to walk, talk and bow at the same time.
Just when Rin thought the forest would go on forever, an opening between the trees appeared somewhere in front of the trio. She was especially thankful that Sesshoumaru had changed direction and was now walking towards the opening not so far from them.
The opening led them out of the forest and just beside a clear stream. It was a nice spot, peaceful and clean, there were all kinds of wild flowers along the riverbank, as well as over the river.
"We rest here for now." Sesshoumaru said and then leaned beside a tree, overlooking everything and everyone that was around. Jaken had taken it upon himself to gather firewoods and some food, so Rin decided that she would gather some of the wild flowers that are around.
She started picking out ones that she found the most appealing, though she had a lot to choose from, her mind was screaming for her to pick out the most beautiful of them all, and maybe that will please her lord and make up for the fact that she had made them wait.
Rin walked along the river, her gaze on the ground, often bending down to inspect one of the flowers, then raising up again after she found it imperfect.
She lost track of time, and had no idea how long she walked along the river, back and for, looking for the perfect flowers to give to Sesshoumaru.
It was then that she caught sight of the prettiest bunch of blue violets that she has ever seen, the problem being that it was on the other side of the river. She debated with herself if she should go over the river or not. She looked back, Jaken was nowhere to be seen, and Sesshoumaru was still leaning on the tree, eyes unfocused and looking at who-knows-where.
Rin made up her mind that she would cross the river, it didn't look very deep, and the currents were not very fast either.
Rin took off her shoes and socks, then folded her pants so that the hem of it would not touch the water, then gingerly stepped into the flowing water, and immediately stepped back, it was freezing cold! She had forgotten that it was almost night and the temperature had dropped dramatically. She tried again, this time even slower, but was still not able to step into the river. Again and again she repeated the process, until finally she had both her feet in the water and was able to walk in there.
She took her steps painstakingly slow, being very careful to not fall over or miss a step. She was in the middle of the river after some time, and suddenly felt the currents shift and become stronger. A lot stronger. She instantly lost her balance due to that, and could not help but scream out in fear. She had never manage the art of swimming, she liked water, yes. But she did not like to be IN the water.
It felt like she was in the water forever, desperately trying to get her head above the surface and breath, the few times she did, she had accidentally choked on the water. Not a very pleasant feeling.
Then a pair of strong arms wrapped around her torso and pulled her up, she gasped for breath and leaned into the arms. She felt herself being moved, but was too tired to care. Her eyelids felt heavy, and soon her breathing became even. It was hard to tell if she was asleep or unconscious, but either way, her life was out of danger.
When Rin finally woke up, she was lying on something very soft, and was near a fire. She got up and looked around, Sesshoumaru was sitting on the opposite side of her, staring into the fire, Jaken was again nowhere to be found.
Rin remembered what had happened, and was very glad that Jaken was not there, for if he was, he would have surely scolded her.
"So you're awake." Sesshoumaru said, "What did you think you were doing?"
"Gomen nasai, I was trying to get the flower that was on the other side of the river," Rin said in a very small voice, "It was really pretty, and I wanted to get it."
"Why did you not tell me?" Sesshoumaru said, his gaze has moved to Rin now.
"I didn't think…" Rin trailed off and looked at the ground, she was ashamed of herself, first she had made her lord wait for her, and now she had probably cause him a lot of trouble, "Gomen nasai."
"Go back to sleep now, we're going in the morning." Sesshoumaru said tonelessly, and then turned towards the other side, "I need to go somewhere, Jaken should be back very soon."
"Hai." Rin said obediently and lay back down. It was only then that she realized she was lying on fur, and not just any fur, it was the fur of a fox, soft and warm. She had no memory that Sesshoumaru possessed fox's fur. `He must have just gotten it.' Rin thought.
"Sesshoumaru-sama?" Rin called out, just before the inu-youkai left.
"What is it?" Sesshoumaru asked her.
"Was it you that got me out of the river?" Rin asked.
"Yes." Sesshoumaru said, "And the fur I got for you, you had a fever, but it's gone now." He said again before Rin could speak.
"Arigato Sesshoumaru-sama." Rin whispered, and then drifted off into her dream world.
"As long as you're okay, Rin." Sesshoumaru whispered after he made sure Rin was asleep, then he leaped into the air and disappeared into the night.
