Confrontations

Inside the palace, the group was dispersing from the drawing room. Kagura and Kanna left the room without a word. Kagura headed toward the stairs and Kanna headed toward the library.

Sango called softly to Kirara and headed for the door. She was stopped by Sesshomaru’s voice.

“Taijiya, stop” he ordered softly, turning to Miroku “Please leave us monk”

Miroku looked at Sango’s face, she just nodded and quietly headed back to sit down.

When Miroku has left, Sesshomaru turned his attention to Sango.

“You would die for him, would you not?” he asked

Sango cocked her head and looked at the Taiyoukai. “Why?”

“Curiosity”

“Of course” she answered

“What is he to you?” he demanded

“Inuyasha? He is my brother” she answered simply

“Why do you feel this?”

“He has placed my life before his more than once, he helped heal me when my family died” again a simple answer. Not what he had expected.

“How about the Miko?”

“I would die for her. She is my sister, pure and unselfish”

“And the Monk? Would he die for them as well”

“Yes, he would”

Sesshomaru stared at her. Humans willing to sacrifice their fragile existence for his half brother, a full demon willing to sacrifice. He knew the Miko would. What he did not understand was why. The demon slayer gave him no insight on this either. To her it seemed apparent.

“Why have they not mated?” he asked

Sango sat there, a shocked look on her face, she spluttered “What? Why? Inuyasha and Kagome?”

“Yes”

“Because Inuyasha is a baka”

“So the Miko would have him? As a half-breed?”

“Of course. To her it is irrelevant what he is”

“What do you mean, irrelevant?”

“She does not care if he is human, half-demon or full youkai. She has even lost her fear of him when he transforms, or didn’t you notice?” the last had a slightly sarcastic twist

Sesshomaru raised his eyebrows at the intended barb, but did not reply to it.

“So it appears the half-breed is a complete idiot” he observed “I suspected as much”

Sango bit the inside of her cheek to stop the sarcastic retort forming on her lips. She just tightened her face into a grimace. “Are you finished?”

“You may go”

Sango headed out the door with Kirara hot on her heels. She headed up the stairs in search of Miroku.

On the roof, Kagome looked up at the stars. She never ceased to be amazed by the vast numbers visible here. She sighed and waited. Inuyasha was in a nasty mood and she knew that she had pushed him to far herself.

Inuyasha relaxed his grip slightly when he felt her go limp and relax against him. He was to tired to fight anymore tonight.

“Kagome” he whispered in her ear

“hmmm” was the only response

A small whine escaped him. Her scent was surrounding him, covering him in a quiet calm. Her scent always calmed him.

“It didn’t come out the way I intended it” he said

When she didn’t respond, he added “The clothing”

She still didn’t say anything, just sat in front of him, staring at the sky.

“Are you going to say anything wench?”

“I suppose that is as close to an apology as I am going to get” she sighed

“I ain’t apologizing!” he defended “You just took it the wrong way!”

“I don’t like playing my brother’s games. That’s all”

Kagome could tell by the change in his voice that he was returning to the normal surly hanyou. She had learned long ago, that if she just waited, quietly with out disturbing the youkai, he would return to his usual self. She had learned that quiet acquiesce calmed the raging youkai faster than anything from her.

“Kagome, this can’t go on” he said quietly

Kagome stiffened, what did he mean? Them? Like what? Did he not want her? She felt panic rising.

“What do you mean?” she stuttered

“I mean this. This constant chasing after things, fighting, battling, putting your life at risk” he answered

“We have a duty Inuyasha”

“Yeah, I know. I worry that something will happen to you, though”

“We are here to find out anything we can Inuyasha. Your brother is not the enemy here”

“I know why we are here”

“And your brother? Can we at least do this peacefully?” Kagome pleaded

“He needs to stay away from what is mine” he snarled

“Inuyasha, what happened tonight?” she asked softly

“I don’t know Kagome. My youkai. I was still control, but something else was happening.” he growled

She sat there, waiting, after this many years, she knew when he had more to say, when to just wait.

He sighed softly into her hair. He was so confused, he couldn’t explain why things went the way they did. All he knew was that his blood was boiling when Karuma had approached her, then when Sesshomaru and Miroku had started toward him when he had Kagome, he felt his youkai howling at him. Demanding from him that he protect her. He had never heard it so clear in his life. It all added up until he exploded.

“Kagome?”

“Yeah?”
< br> “What else did Midoriko tell you?” he asked quietly

Kagome blushed deep and shifted. Inuyasha could tell she was nervous “nothing really”

“Nothing?” he queried “or nothing you want to talk about?”

“Well, nothing really. She just wanted me to know to trust in you” Kagome answered vaguely.

“Feh, you know I will take care of you” he answered roughly

“yeah, I do know” her response so low he almost missed it

“hey, Inuyasha?”

“Yeah?”

“What happens when this is all over with?”

“What do you mean?”

“This, when it is all done, what do we do from there? Where do we go?”

“Well, that depends” he sighed. He knew what he had hoped for, he knew what he hoped would happen. He hoped that Kagome would stay here, in his era, with him. ‘so tell her’ his youkai prompted ‘feh’ he answered back. ‘you don’t know until you try’.

“Inuyasha?” Kagome turned slightly, he was growling softly. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing, I should get you to bed” he picked her and the sleeping Shippo up and headed to the edge of the roof. Looking around, he took note of the ledges and started working his way down quietly. Trying not to disturb the sleeping Shippo. He finally lit on Kagome’s window sill and slipped into the room.

He headed over to the bed and sat down with Kagome on his lap, pulling Shippo and Kagome over onto the bed, he rolled on his side.

“Get some sleep”

Kagome sighed and snuggled deep into the soft futon, Inuyasha’s steady breathing against her back. She closed her eyes and was asleep almost instantly.

Inuyasha laid there with his mind in turmoil. He wanted nothing more than to tell her what he wanted. He’d always been able to tell her everything. He just didn’t understand why this was so hard. She had never rejected him before, what made him think she would reject him now? Soon he drifted off to sleep, the battle of his conscience working into his sleep.

*****

Miroku and Sango settled into her room, Sango on the futon and Miroku on the floor next to it.

“Miroku?”

When he raised his head, Sango continued

“Do you think Inuyasha and Kagome are alright?”

“What do you mean? I don’t think he would hurt her and I can’t imagine anyone making trouble in Sesshomaru’s palace.”

“Yeah, I know that, I mean do you think they will ever be ok? Do you think he will ever tell her how he feels?” she asked

“I think he’s going to need some encouragement. I think that there has been to much pain in the past for him not to have some hesitations.”

“But, Kagome is different, she would never hurt him”

“We know that and deep down, he knows that. However, I think just getting past what has happened to him before her will take time”

“I just hope he doesn’t take to long” Sango sighed again “Maybe we should tell them about us, about our engagement”

“Why?” he looked up at her “Think it might give Inuyasha something to think about?”

“You never know, it might help give him a push in the right direction”

*****

Inuyasha’s eyes popped open, it was still dark, he could feel Sesshomaru’s youkai close by.

Looking around he saw a shadow move across the window. He carefully slipped out of the bed, making sure that he did not disturb Kagome and Shippo.

He headed toward the window and stepped out on the ledge. Looking around, he could see Sesshomaru moving through the night shadows, along the palace. He hopped down, silently stalking his brother.

Sesshomaru’s ears twitched, he knew his brother had come out of the room. He knew he would feel him and follow. Sesshomaru smirked as he headed down and toward the orchard.

Inuyasha followed in the shadows, moving along behind his brother, as he headed down.

The darkness surrounded them both, heading deeper into the groves of the trees, Sesshomaru halted and waited. Inuyasha was close behind.

Turning, just as his brother broke into the clearing, Sesshomaru sneered. “Is there something I can do for you half-breed?”

“What are you doing out sneaking around in the dark?”

“Sneaking? Around my own palace?” he raised an eyebrow at Inuyasha

“Feh” he growled low “sneaking around people’s windows when they’re supposed to be sleeping”

“Ah, did I disturb you Inuyasha?”

“You stay away from Kagome! Stay away from Kagome’s room too!” Inuyasha bared his teeth

“What would I want with your Miko?” he growled back

“I don’t know, you bastard, and I ain’t gonna find out the hard way”

“All this posturing pup, for someone who isn’t even your mate?”

“I told you that is none of your business!” again flashing his teeth

“I think it is” Sesshomaru moved closer, growling a warning. The meaning in the warning clear to Inuyasha.

“Why?” he asked ‘damn it, I fell right into that one’ he thought

“Well Inuyasha, some of us have been doing some research, while others were out playing fetch”

“What did you find?”

“Very interesting, you almost appear concerned” Sesshomaru was toying with him. Knowing how easy it was for Inuyasha to blow up.

“Damn it! If it has something to do with Kagome, You tell me now!” Inuyasha demanded.

“What does that have to do with you?” Sesshomaru baited again “She is not your mate”

“I’m her protector! Damn you!”

“What else Inuyasha?”

“What do you mean, what else?”

“You fool. You’re friends are willing to die for you, yet, you attack the monk for touching what belongs to you, you bare your teeth at the demon slayer and yet a hair goes untouched on the kit’s head for lunging into the middle of our spat.” Sesshomaru sneered “Are you really that stupid Inuyasha?”

Inuyasha stood silent staring at his brother, a dark crimson creeping up his cheeks. The way Sesshomaru made it sound, he sounded like an ungrateful dog.

“Nothing to say Inuyasha?”

“What are you getting at bastard?”

“Simple, you are not smart enough to even hear your own youkai, how are you smart enough to help the miko defeat the impending darkness that looms over our lands?”

“We have done fine so far”

“Yes and from what Midoriko told you, Naraku was simply a warm-up, a trial run, a sparing partner”

“We will get stronger”

“You have to be able to pull it together long enough”

“I will take care of Kagome”

“Why?” Sesshomaru growled again, “Don’t you get why? Until you do, you will never be able to protect her properly” His frustration was rising, his half brother could be so incredibly dense. He had thought to spare him some humiliation in front of the others and yet here he stands oblivious. Deep down, he knew it was to spare the miko as well.

The prophecy had given him the clue, that is when he had realized. As much as he hated to admit it, the teller of the prophecy had been well respected in youkai circles, had been known to be a seer. The future that Kagome told of did not contain youkai from what they knew. He could not allow that to happen..

“What is it you are trying to tell me! Why don’t you just spit it out!” Inuyasha demanded

“You and that human are destiny” Sesshomaru spat at him “You and her, you are part of a prophecy” he growled low “Only you are to stupid to even claim her!”

“What! What are you talking about!” Inuyasha eyed him warily. “Part of what?”

“What part of that did you really not understand?” he asked sarcastically.

“Why are you telling me this?”

“Well now, I really can not tell the miko, can I?” he sneered “human women do not understand youkai politics. I am not sure you do either, but, you should understand better than most”

“So what you are saying is that we are part of a prophecy? That our being together is destiny?”

“Let me understand this baka. Your pretty little miko falls through a well into the past, you and her are the only ones that can pass through it, you have seen Midoriko, she bound you two in a magic so strong that even I can not sense it, your life force is bound to hers and you don’t get destiny? You didn’t already know that you were destined?”

Inuyasha shook is head ‘hell, if he could explain it to Kagome in words that would make her feel like she was destined to be his, she just might listen’. He knew she had a weakness for romantic love stories.

“Do you have the prophecy here? Do you have that scroll here at the palace?” Inuyasha demanded

“Yes, I do have it here. We actually found it quite by accident. It is actually thanks to you.” Sesshomaru sneered. “Apparently Kanna found it after you stormed out with your precious little miko. Quite by accident, it seems that our earlier conversation in the study had knocked it loose from the book case and your nasty little departure kept the house awake later than normal”

“Don’t show it to Kagome, let me read it before she sees it.” Inuyasha stated quietly.

“Why? Will it change your mind?” he replied “Will it make you claim the miko?”

“Are you stupid? You ignorant bastard, I have always wanted Kagome as mine.”

“Well, what are you waiting for?” he turned on Inuyasha “She is human, are you waiting until she old and ugly?” he sneered “Or are you afraid? Afraid that your pure little innocent miko will turn her back on you? Are you afraid that she will not want you, a half breed?”

“Shut you mouth bastard. Kagome is not like other people. She doesn’t care!” he snarled

Sesshomaru turned and started to walk away “Figure it out half breed” he disappeared into the orchard.

Inuyasha looked up, the sky was dark, the stars fading, he knew dawn would come soon. He headed back toward the window he came from. Slipping in quietly before anyone else in the room awoke.

He sat down on the edge of the bed and stared at Kagome. ‘so, we were always meant to be together. A prophecy’. He didn’t want her to know. Not yet. He wanted her with him because she wanted to be with him. Not because of some duty. He knew she would stay if she thought it was her responsibility.

He carefully laid down next to her, breathing in her scent, he gently curled around her. His youkai wrapped itself around her completely. She would be his. A small smile graced his lips as the sun broke over the horizon. Highlighting her silver streak of hair. She looked like his. He could see the faint trace of his youkai facial marking on her cheek.

OK disclaimer time:
I don’t own Inuyasha, it’s characters or it’s story line.
That sole joy belongs to Rumiko Takahashi
I’ll let you know which ones I own as we go.
