Of Things To Come


Kagome rolled over and found herself face to face with Inuyasha. She smiled at him, as he sat quietly studying her.

“Morning” She said in a low voice

“Hey”

“Did you sleep at all?” concern laced her voice

“Yeah, a little” he sighed. “You gonna lay in bed all day?”

“HEY! Gimme a minute to wake up before you start hollering!” she smiled at him. Looking down, she realized that they were both still in the formal clothes from last night.

“Guess we oughta get changed?” she noted guiltily

“Yeah, I need to get my clothes back on and you should wear something comfortable” he said with a sly smile.

“Why? What’s up?” she knew better than to trust that look

“Kagura came by this morning, said something about a conversation you two had at Kaede’s?” he smirked, he knew what she was in for… question was, did she?

Inuyasha got up from the bed and headed toward the wardrobe. He pulled out his Fire Rat clothing and then reached in and pulled out a pair of Kagome’s stretch pants and a snug fitting top.

He headed behind the screen to change clothes as he heard Kagome getting up and moving around, he heard the door close and knew she headed toward the bath.

On his way out the door he gently roused the kit “Shippo, time to get up” as Shippo rolled over he tossed the kit his clothes.

“Breakfast in 20 minutes. Kagome is in the bath” he headed out the door as Shippo bounded off the bed in search of his surrogate mother.

Shippo headed down the hall sniffing for Kagome. He found the door she was behind quickly and dashed in, finding Kagome and Sango in the bath, he headed straight for the waters.

“Good morning Shippo!” they said in unison

“Good morning mama, good morning Sango” he said as he splashed into the water

“So, is Inuyasha ok?” Sango asked

“He seems to be back to normal this morning. I don’t know if he slept much, but he was in an agreeable mood”

“What happened last night?”

“I don’t know Sango” Kagome related the events of the previous night to Sango

“I knew he was stressed out, last night was just a bit much. I am really starting to worry that there is more going on than what he is telling me”

“Maybe Miroku can tell us something. If he can get some time alone with Inuyasha, maybe he will get an insight on what is bothering him.”

“It is worth a try”

“I can follow them and see if anybody spills anything you should know about!” Shippo piped up.

“Just be careful Shippo. Inuyasha has been in a foul mood. I don’t want you to get hurt sneaking up on him” Kagome worried.

“I’ll be careful mama! You and Sango are gonna train with Kagura today aren’t you?” he asked “This way, I have something to do too!”

Sango and Kagome exchanged glances, they knew that Shippo wanted to be useful. They shrugged, what could it hurt, he was safe enough on Sesshomaru’s grounds

“Ok, you win”

The three of them, got out of the bath and quickly dressed, heading for the dining room.

Sesshomaru, Miroku and Inuyasha reached the dining hall at the same time.

“Good morning Inuyasha, Sesshomaru-sama” Miroku nodded

Inuyasha grunted in response. Sesshomaru just nodded before heading to the table

“You seem to be yourself again this morning” Miroku noted

“You seem to still be alive this morning”

“Ever the bright morning sunshine aren’t you Inuyasha?”

“So Sango didn’t do you in last night, what a shame”

Sesshomaru just snorted at their morning banter. The idle chatter of humans never made sense to him.

“Kagome feeling alright this morning?” Miroku asked

“Seemed fine. She was bathing with Sango and Shippo when I came down”

“Sango was up and ready to go this morning. Evidently they have plans with Kagura” Miroku noted

Sesshomaru raised an eyebrow at this.

Kagura breezed in at that moment “We are going to start training today” she noted absently as she took a seat at the table.

Kagome, Sango, Shippo and Kirara followed, behind her. Kagome dressed in snug fitting stretchy clothes from her time, Sango in her slayer outfit.

Kanna came in a moment later, with a very sleepy Rin. Rin headed toward the chair closest to Shippo.

“Good Morning Lord Sesshomaru!” She chirped, sitting down next to Shippo, “Good Morning Shippo! Do you want to pick flowers with Rin after breakfast?” She asked

“Sure!” he enthused

Kagome and Sango exchanged knowing glances.

Kagome settled down next to Inuyasha as breakfast was served.

“Lord Sesshomaru, I know we are supposed to research today, however, Sango and I would enjoy some time to train with Kagura if we may?” Kagome looked at him

“Kagura is free to use the dojo as she desires. If she wishes to spar with you then that is fine” he responded

“I can’t wait to see this!” Miroku’s eyes sparkled

“Not you lecher! You will be helping us with the scrolls this morning” Inuyasha growled.

“Inuyasha! You assume that I have less honorable intentions than aiding the ladies?” he asked with mock indignity

“Uh, Yeah”

“Where are the courtiers this morning?” Sango asked

“They do not join me for breakfast, I do not allow that” Sesshomaru stated. “They have use of the dining facilities after my breakfast”

The rest of breakfast passed quietly and the group headed out in different directions.

Sango, Kagome and Kagura headed toward the dojo, Kirara followed behind. Shippo and Rin headed toward the garden with Jaken grumbling behind. Inuyasha, Miroku, Sesshomaru and Kanna headed toward the study.

Kagura led the girls to the dojo in silence. Once there, she handed each of them a light sword. “Sango, you are quite adept with Hiraikotsu, Kagome you are adept with your bow and arrow. I thought we might start on swordsmanship”

Kagome and Sango nodded. Kagome had always wanted to learn to defend herself in tighter situations and Sango, while understanding the basics had never become adept at swords, preferring her small dagger.

“Kagome, Sango, we will start with the basics and run through basic steps on handling a sword”

Kagura took her place in front of the girls and began demonstrating basic techniques in holding a sword.

As they worked, Kagura started questioning Kagome on what had occurred last night between her and Inuyasha. Kagome related most of what happened between them the night before.

Kagura thought back to what she had seen early this morning. She wasn’t sure that telling Kagome she had seen Inuyasha and Sesshomaru tracking out into the orchard was a good idea. She had hoped that Kagome would have information on what had transpired, yet it appeared that Kagome was unaware of Inuyasha’s late night exploits.

“Sango, your form is very good, why have you not taken up sword work before?” Kagura asked

Kagome stopped to admire Sango. Kagura was right, Sango’s form was good.

“I have always relied on hand to hand and Hiraikotsu.”

Kagura led them over to heavy wooden practice dummies. She showed Sango and Kagome various techniques to wound and to kill demons. They worked for hours on finding and hitting marks on the wooden dummies that would take out an opponent.

In the library, the group was gathered around a scroll. The scroll that Sesshomaru had found the night before. The scroll was almost complete and contained the prophecy he had remembered from years ago. There was a chatter of activity as the group read the remainder of the scroll.

Miroku and Inuyasha were certain that the prophecy was speaking of Kagome. There were to many definitive details for it to be anyone else. It told of the powers displayed, the goodness of the heart of the miko.

“So it would appear that you and Kagome are destined to be together” Miroku noted.

“Feh, it’s just a piece of paper” Inuyasha scoffed. His mind was in turmoil. He had been raised by his mother not to turn a blind eye to the fates and he had learned long ago about the seer who had prophesized this event. She had prophesized many others, including Naraku, the death of his father, the brothers who battled with fangs.

Sesshomaru and Inuyasha’s eyes met. They were both reflecting on the same events. “You know better than that half-breed”

“So what do we do now?” Miroku asked “The part of the scroll that tells what the ‘darkness’ is, is missing”

“It does give us enough clues to know that what we are facing is a demon that relishes darkness and takes souls for strength. We also know that it will come for Kagome.” Sesshomaru noted

“Yeah, come for Kagome, that’s the problem” Inuyasha growled “I ain’t waiting for nothing to come for Kagome”

“You may not have a choice, Kanna does not know what happened to the Fuyoheki Stone after Naraku had it. We do not know if this demon has it back, Inuyasha”

“We don’t know that he had it to begin with” Inuyasha replied

“The prophecy notes that he holds a stone that bars his powers from sight” Miroku noted

“Feh, the prophecy also notes that Kagome is my mate” he growled back

“Yes, Inuyasha, and if you weren’t such a baka, she would already be” Sesshomaru sneered

“Could it be, that the prophecy is mistaken, by the events that occurred from Midoriko?” Kanna asked. She had been silent so far, everyone jumped, having forgotten that she was there.

“Kanna could have a point” Miroku amended

“Ah, wise question Kanna, except the part of the prophecy that states she nor hers will no longer traverse time” Sesshomaru noted.

That was the part that had Inuyasha worried, no longer able to traverse time. Does that mean trapped here or in the future. He couldn’t bear the thought of her trapped in the future with him trapped here in this era.

Inuyasha felt a prick in his neck. Reaching up to slap at the annoyance, his hand came away with a little old flea in it.

“Myoga! What are you doing here?”

“Ah! Lord Inuyasha! Lord Sesshomaru! How are you My Lords?” Myoga asked gleefully, hopping down and heading toward Sesshomaru

“Don’t even consider it” Sesshomaru growled

Myoga gulped and looked around. “Ah, Lord Inuyasha, your appearance! What happened to you? Oh! The scroll! I see you have found it! Have you mated the fair Lady Kagome? Where is the Lady? Have you read the scroll?” Myoga’s questions bounced around at a rapid rate

The two brothers just looked on and waited for Myoga’s breath to expire. As he gasped for breath, Inuyasha started.

He told Myoga of the happenings to him and Kagome, Midoriko’s warnings and the bonding.

“Ah! That is fine magic she has worked there! It has been centuries since that magic was practiced! I remember the last time it was done. Such tragic results! Ah, those times were so different from these!” Myoga was rambling

“Wait, Myoga, did you say you remember the last time?” Sesshomaru interrupted his ramblings.

“Why yes, Lord Sesshomaru! It was in the time of your father, right about the time you were whelped! It was shortly after that the prophecy was written”

“Well? Spill it flea” Inuyasha snarled

“Well, it seems that there was an Inu demon that was in love with Midoriko. He was the Lord of the East at the time. It was a grand time, the East and West were ruled by Inu clans. The North by a Dragon clan and the South by a clan of Felines. There was a great power rising up at the time, demons were rebelling, most of the lords were handling skirmishes in their own lands, several demons banded together to fight against the goodness and light of the lands. The Lord of the East, was concerned for the safety of the Great Priestess Midoriko. He bound her life force to his, so that she would have the power needed to defeat the dark demons that had risen to fight the lords. They were bound one life force to another. As long as he lived, she lived and the other way around. Such a sad fate for such a great demon lord.”

“Well, what happened?” Inuyasha demanded

Miroku sighed, “Do you not remember the state of Midoriko? Were you not there at the cave?”

“Yeah. So?”

“Well, Lord Inuyasha, when the jewel was formed and Midoriko was turned to stone, so was the Lord of the East. He was headed toward the cave where Midoriko was battling the demons. Due to the nature of the bonding, he knew she was in trouble, she was almost 4 days away, when the battle first began, he ignored it, he was dealing with his own battles. He knew how strong she was, when the battle continued, he realized to late that she was in dire trouble. He abandoned his generals and warriors to battle on for his lands and headed directly toward Midoriko. Unfortunately he had been seriously wounded, travel was slower than it would have been otherwise. He was transformed into his full form when Midoriko sealed the demons and herself into the jewel. His stone statue still stands in the forest near the cave of Midoriko”

“I have seen that statue” Sesshomaru noted “On my patrols, the magic is still to strong to allow any to touch it, flowering vines are wrapped around it’s legs”

“Ah that is a shame, it is a disgraceful way for such a great dog demon to spend eternity trapped” Myoga sighed.

“Hey, what do you know about the prophecy?” Inuyasha asked

“Well, you have the scroll, that was written shortly after the Jewel was created. The seer also foretold of uprisings of humans against demons, of a darkness that would come into the land and take both human and demon life. She did note once to your father, that the darkness was here. They were never able to find it.”

“So my father looked for this darkness? Do they know if it was a demon or a god?” Sesshomaru asked.

“It was believed that is was a very strong demon, My Lord”

“I have seen in the scrolls a reference to uprisings against the Demon Lords, by humans, that there developed a deep hatred and distrust of demons. Do you know what caused this?” Kanna asked

“Well, It was after Midoriko was gone, there was a belief that without the power of Midoriko, the humans felt that there were no powers to keep the demons in check, there were bands of dark demons attacking human villages and there began the hatred between demons and humans. Before that, we lived quite peacefully, with little fear of one another.”

“So, Myoga” Inuyasha cracked his knuckles “Have you always known about the prophecy? Did you know from the beginning that Kagome was destined for darker things? That she was to be my mate?”

Myoga gulped and began to sweat “Uh, Lord Inuyasha! I did not know for certain that she was the one! Not until later” he squeaked

Inuyasha picked the flea up and glared at him. “How much danger is Kagome in?”

“I don’t know Lord Inuyasha! I know that the darkness will find her!” Myoga gulped, “That much you can not change! It will seek her out, it is her power that it seeks”

“She is a strong Miko, I will admit that, however, there have been other strong mikos” Sesshomaru began “What makes the miko so special?”

Inuyasha turned his eyes toward Sesshomaru. “Is it because of her ability to travel through time?”

“I do not know, Myoga?” all eyes turned toward the old flea

“There is more. There is more to the prophecy. Parts not recorded. Her ability to overcome the hatred between the races. She is believed to hold powers unseen by any. It was told that she is more powerful than Midoriko”

“I have not sensed this power from her” Sesshomaru stated.

“I have” everyone turned to look at Miroku

“I have seen it in her. When Inuyasha is in danger, there is something that flares up in her. When she has been faced with the potential of loosing Inuyasha, I have seen something almost god like in power flare briefly. I will admit that it is humbling” Miroku sighed. He couldn’t believe that none of the others had seen it, he saw it during one of the battles between the brothers, saw it again in battles against Naraku.

“What do you mean, god like?” Kanna asked. She had seen the flare in Kagome’s powers before, when she had fought off the mirror. She was calling out to Inuyasha and Kanna had seen a flare in the miko.

“I have not seen powers like that in a mere mortal. It would be difficult to hold in for a human, she seems unaware of it.” Miroku turned thoughtful. “It is almost like it has been hidden from her”

“If it is hidden, who did so and why? More importantly how do we get it unlocked?” Kanna asked

“That is a question we need answered. How to help her tap into her powers” Sesshomaru added

“I have some suspicions about that” Myoga added “The prophecy lead us to look at Kagome and Inuyasha. I suspect that somehow Inuyasha is the key to her powers.”

“How do you figure?” Inuyasha asked

“Well, Miroku noted that the powers seem to surface when you are in trouble, Lord Inuyasha” Myoga scratched his chin “It would appear that her feelings for you are stronger than what ever binds her powers”

“Think about it Inuyasha, how many times has Kagome fought off evil to protect you. Even when it is attacking her soul and spirit. When Kikyo was resurrected, when the dark miko had control of her, Kagome fought through some powerful magic for your sake.”

“Tsubaki was in control of her, when she attacked you, yet she fought through long enough to protect you. When Urasue had her in the bath, she fought through that, long enough to protect you”

“There does appear to be a common thread here Inuyasha” Miroku added

“So once again, our clan brought low by a human” Sesshomaru sneered

“Forgive me Lord Sesshomaru, she is no ordinary human!” Myoga defended.

“We shall see”
