Future Foretold

500 years in the future.

“Uncle?” a quiet voice disturbed the calm in the study

“Yes?” was the weary reply.

“We are to be at the Shrine of Bishamonten today. Are you ready to go? You appear exhausted.” he noted as he watched his uncle trail a hand across his face.

“No, I am fine. We are meeting Old Man Higurashi today, are we not? Is he able to travel to the Shrine of Bishamonten?”

“Yes, he has been traveling back and forth from his shrine to the Bishamonten monthly since Kagome started her travels back to Sengoku Jidai.” He had to admit, he did worry about the crazy old man with his travels to the small village West of Tokyo that housed the Shrine.

The Shingen Family owned the shrine and it’s surrounding lands. They were descendents of fierce warriors that had fought during the Sengoku Jidai. There were rumors surrounding the family and it’s history. The man sitting behind the desk knew the history of this fierce family well.

Sighing, he stood up, they needed to leave, he was tired, but, he had good news and news that he needed to share with the group he knew would assemble there today.

*****

Arriving at the Shingen Family home, he headed up the stairs toward the Shrine of Bishamonten. He could see a group gathered in the clearing in front of the Shrine. Three older gentlemen and two young men and a young woman were gathered. He could see Kagome’s Grandfather talking animatedly with the other two older men. They were cackling like old geese. He had a rapt audience as he told of his granddaughter’s recent visit and viewing the completed Shikon No Tama.

“I realize you are all fascinated by the Tama, however, that is not why we are here today.” he said quietly.

All eyes turned toward him and his nephew. He knew they were waiting. Before he could tell them anything though, he needed to know what timelines had been affected by his recent disruption.

“Ah! Lord Sesshomaru! How good to see you! I see your nephew is with you today.” Old Man Higurashi said. He looked at the lord, his nephew was also his son in law. Married to his human daughter Rin. He was the innocent child that Kagome and Inuyasha cared for. Now, if he could just remember his name.

“Yes, Shippo has come with me” he replied.

“Come Lord Sesshomaru” The young woman invited him into the house. She looked as her ancient ancestor had. Samaya looked like Sango, the resemblance was uncanny. Both he and Shippo had noticed right away as she grew into adulthood that she had the same spirit and appearance as Sango.

They knew by now how this worked. Lord Sesshomaru would turn up every so often and demand that they relate their family history. A family history that was repeated daily to make sure that no detail was lost. Lord Sesshomaru had started this family tradition long ago with their ancestors.

They all knew that during the Sengoku Jidai Sesshomaru’s brother was lost. They were battling a great evil, a darkness with no likeness seen before. The Battle had raged for days and Inuyasha and Kagome were lost. Sesshomaru had spent the last 500 years altering the past. An unfortunate side effect to the magic that protected him from loosing all his memories was that as the past changed before him, he could not always see the changes, remember the differences.

This is where they come in. There family had dedicated itself to service of the Lord of the West since that time. Sango and Miroku had settled in the village, after the death of Inuyasha and Kagome, they had begun the tradition of telling the history. Written and oral.

The group gathered in the living room of the Shingen Family. They sat down and began relating the history of their ancestors and the history of Inuyasha and Kagome, the stories of Sesshomaru and Shippo and their mates.

Sesshomaru sat in silence listening to the stories. Listening to the changes that he had not seen, listening for things left unsaid, listening to them talk of people long gone, he closed his eyes and could almost see what they were telling him. Flashes and images traveled in front of his eyes as they recounted his life, told in the tale of human voices. The keepers of the past for him.

While the changes that he encouraged were minor, they had major effects. He knew that tampering with the timeline was dangerous. Not only to his brother and the miko, but to himself, the world around them and everyone that they ever came in contact with.

“Well Sesshomaru?” Old Man Higurashi asked after they were done. “Any luck this time?”

“Well, there are some distinct differences. I believe we are making progress. I have seen many changes, just by ensuring that they left a day later than they planned.” He sighed “I really don’t know yet, we have so many variables to get through.”

Samaya brought more tea and sat down next to Sesshomaru. “I have been thinking, I know that you have been making small alterations, I worry that if we continue, we will change something irreversible. I almost wonder since we stopped the initial catalyst, if we are not better off leaving things as they are. Let fate take it’s course from here on out”

“What makes you think this Samaya?” Her grandfather asked.

“Something in the last memory. There is a flash of small child in my mind. It isn’t a memory. More like an indication, an insight of things to come”

“Samaya?” Shippo asked “Are you seeing warnings? Premonitions?”

“I don’t honestly know Shippo. I think maybe I am” she responded.

The group talked late into the day, about numerous topics, business, religion, home life, school.

“We must head back, we have much to do tonight and your aunt has dinner plans” Sesshomaru looked at Shippo.

“Yeah! We don’t want to distress Kagura when she has a dinner party planned! There is no fury in that house like Kagura with her fans!” Shippo laughed. Remembering a time when he and his uncle had been out drinking Sake’ after a huge merger, they had stumbled into the mansion drunk. Kagura was waiting. She had a dinner party planned that night. They had forgotten. Blades of wind came from every direction, in their drunken stupor it had been hard to evade the oncoming blades. They were bloodied and battered when she was done. They had not forgotten a dinner party since.

Sesshomaru winced. His mate had a way about her, one he didn’t want to be on the receiving end of.

Laughing the group from the Shrine escorted them to the steps. “Please Lord Sesshomaru, think about what I have said” Samaya asked.

“I will. I have come to trust your family over the years.”

Sesshomaru and Shippo headed toward their car, heading back to the mansion.

*****

Samaya headed into the Shrine. “Grandpa Higurashi, please follow me” she asked.

Grandpa Higurashi, Grandpa Shingen, his brother Kohaku and her cousin Taylan followed her into the Shrine.

“I found the scroll. I think this may be due to Sesshomaru’s time line change. I want to show you the scroll about your granddaughter.”

“Thank you Samaya. I have long wanted to know what the prophecy was. Sesshomaru won’t talk about it, Shippo never actually saw it.”

“I know your family had hard times, hard times accepting what was to come. Your daughter has been very strong for the sake of your family and ours. This is the least I can do for you.” Samaya smiled. She had met the infamous miko once, when her father was still alive, they had visited the Higurashi Shrine after Kagome’s father had died. They were the same age in this era, yet, she was a part of her very history.

Pulling out a set of scrolls, she picked up one very old, well worn scroll and handed it to Grandpa Higurashi.

The old man took the scroll to a low table in the shrine and unrolled it.

What he read amazed him.

In the future is born a miko child. A very special child.’
‘A human child who will not see the difference between the races.’
‘She will be born strong and independent.’
‘She will be free from hate and darkness.’
‘She will travel great distances to help our people.’
‘For a time, time will have no meaning to her.’
‘She will defeat a great dark power that rises in our lands.’
‘That will be the beginning of her battle.’
‘A greater darkness than any have ever seen shall rise up’
‘She will be the key to it’s defeat’
‘Only through her, may our race be saved’
‘This darkness shall swallow all demons in it’s path.’
‘Our race will face extinction, without the miko.’
‘Her love is great, her love for our race is great, her love for her race is great.’
‘No power equal to her has ever been born, nor will it be without her’
‘Her destiny is bound to a half demon’
‘A half demon of great blood lines’
‘He is her other half, without him, she can not succeed.’
‘With him, all things are possible for her’
‘The darkness comes for her. For her power’
‘It hides behind a stone, no one will see it coming’
‘Trust in her, for she will feel it’
‘It will be a part of her, a part of him’
‘Great sacrifices will be made to end the darkness’
‘She nor hers will no longer traverse time because of the darkness’
‘The battle will be fierce, hers will be required to sacrifice for her’
‘They will do so unselfishly. She will be first, to them’
‘The time of darkness will come after a great defeat’
‘One of her own will lead her in her way’
‘Our race has a responsibility to her, guard her, protect her’
‘Her mate will be a great force…

The scroll ends there. There was damage to the end of the scroll and what was left was badly stained and unreadable. Grandpa Higurashi sat there in silence for the longest time.

“Thank you Samaya, for sharing this. Thank you, all of you, for your heritage, your family stories, the stories of my granddaughter. They are precious to me and have sustained me over the years, in our battle against what was to come” The old priest bowed his head low.

“No, thank you, without your granddaughter, we would not be as we are.” Meine Shingen, Samaya’s grandfather added as he bowed his head toward Kagome’s grandfather.

“I must get back to my shrine” he headed for the door.

Grandpa Higurashi left for his own shrine. Samaya looked over at her own grandfather and smiled. Hopefully, if all went well, they would have the famed miko and hanyou back with them. This is what their ancestors Miroku and Sango had wanted, this is what their family had worked for generations for.

Samaya smiled wistfully. Her life had been built around Kagome and Inuyasha. She had known no other duties. It thrilled her to think that at some point, they may live in this timeline with her. It was bittersweet, everything her family was built on was this pivotal moment. If they succeeded, they would have no purpose. Everything they had worked toward, would be done.

Sesshomaru and Shippo entered the mansion to be assaulted by Rin, Kagura and Taro, Sesshomaru and Kagura’s oldest son.

“Well?” Kagura demanded as her nephew and mate came in the door.

“Well” Sesshomaru drawled, he quirked an eyebrow at the assembled group. They were like tiny Birds of Paradise, waiting to swoop down and snatch up a snack.

He headed toward the study, with the group hot on his heels.

“Sesshomaru, don’t give me that!” Kagura demanded “did it work?”

“Yes, it appears to have worked” he said. Sesshomaru related the days events to the gathered crowd. Sharing with them the concerns that Samaya had.

“So now we just wait and see?” Rin asked. She reached over and picked up Shippo’s hand. She knew how hard this was for him. Kagome and Inuyasha were his parents, while Sesshomaru and Kagura had taken care of him, nobody replaced those two for him.

“Yes, We shall see” those words hauntingly familiar to him.

*****

Across town at the Higurashi Shrine, Grandpa Higurashi was entertaining much the same questions from Mya. Mya was very concerned with what they knew about Kagome and Inuyasha. While he had kept the bulk of it a secret from Mya, he did share the contents of the prophecy with her.

Mya squealed, completely missing the point. “So! Kagome and Inuyasha are destined to be together!” she smiled and sighed “I just knew it! I knew those two were to be together!”

After a moment, she stopped and looked at her father. “Dad?”

“Yes Mya?”

“What does it mean? She nor hers will no longer traverse time?” she asked, concern etched on her face.

“I take it to believe she will become trapped in one time”

“Well, what happens if she is trapped here without Inuyasha?” Mya asked

“I don’t believe that the fates would be that cruel to her” He responded

“Oh” her face fell “What happens if we don’t see her again?”

“Then we will know through Sesshomaru and the Shingen Family what has become of our beloved little girl” he sighed

“I think I can live with that, if I know she was happy”

“I think we will know that. Lord Sesshomaru will be able to tell us that”

Souta came in at that moment. “Ji Chan! What did you find out?”

“Nothing to worry yourself about Souta, just a lot of prophecy mumbo jumbo about your sister” he answered vaguely.

“No new news?” he asked

“Nope! She seems to be fine!” he answered.

“Good! What’s for dinner mom?” his attention shifted toward his stomach. Something that all boys that age suffer from.

Mya laughed and headed toward the stove. She had started dinner quite some time ago and had just been waiting for her father to come home to serve it.

Sitting down to dinner was a quiet affair. Ji Chan and Mya lost in their own thoughts, Souta happily devouring all food that was within his reach.

*****

Sesshomaru sat in his study, it was in the early hours before dawn. Kagura’s dinner party had been a success as always.

He got up and went to the French style doors in the study, flinging them wide open, he stepped out onto the balcony and stared at the night sky.

Frustration. Something that he watched his brother grapple with so many times. It was a common emotion for him now. Not something he knew back then.

It welled up inside of him and filled him. Helpless, that is what he had been.

Closing his eyes, he could see the battlefield, littered with dead soldiers, could see the moment his brother and the miko were struck down.

He had waited, all these years to change that very moment.

Knowing that the repercussions of what he was doing were grave, it had taken all of his self control not to reach out and snatch them away from the well. He knew that is why he left Shippo there to watch rather than himself.

Thinking back over the memories that were becoming hazy, he knew that the decision he had made was the correct one.

They were still alive in the past.

Now if he could keep them alive in the future.

A long lone howl broke the night sky.
