Consequences: Chapter Nine

A/N: In this fic, I've decided that Kohaku is already dead, and the last shikon shard is in Kagome's keeping. And apart from that shard, the shikon no tama is complete, and Naraku has it.
I know I mentioned this before, but for people who don't read the manga, Byakuya is a minion of Naraku's he created after Kagura's death.

Kagome, having cried herself to sleep sometime during the early hours of the morning, conveniently woke up just as Sango finished preparing everyone's breakfast.
The terrible memories about Inuyasha quickly came rushing back to her, and she felt a little sick. She'd never really allowed herself to think about it in depth, but she'd always somehow imagined that one day, when Naraku was dead, Inuyasha would use the shikon no tama to become human, and live with her in modern Tokyo. She' teach him the ways of being a human and living in his world, and he'd be able to forget about his painful past and live a peaceful, safe, life, and one day, surely they'd have gotten married.
Now that dream that she'd only just realised she had been clinging onto had been crushed in the most terrible way she could imagine, and it tore at her soul. Her fairy-tale romance had been a girlish fantasy. A beauty-and-the-beast story backwards, where she, the beauty, wound up mistreated and unwanted, and Inuyasha, the prince, transformed into a beast from a prince at the end of the story.
So what was supposed to happen now? She needed to go home, to where everything always made sense and everything was always alright.

The others watched Kagome's dismal face apprehensively as she silently picked at her food, not wanting to say anything in case they triggered her into tears or fury with a wrong word.
Slowly, their foods disappeared, and it was time to get on with the day.
“Kagome-sama?” Asked Miroku. She looked up. Miroku thought she looked particularly young, and perhaps frightened this morning. “Inuyasha said he wanted to give you some space for a couple of days, and then he'll come talk to you.” He told her.
Kagome nodded, then looked like she was going to cry.
“Can we go back now then? I need to go home…” She asked.
“Of course…” Replied Sango.
The journey back to the village was awkward at best. Kagome clearly didn't want to talk about it. Occasionally she'd sob quietly on Sango's shoulder for a while, but if anyone said anything to try to comfort her, she'd insist that she was `fine, really' and she just needed some time to get over it.

To get over what, exactly? Sango and Miroku were wondering. To get over what Inuyasha had done so the relationship could move on, or to get over the relationship full stop? the trip was prolonged over night because poor Kirara was very tired from having had to fly so much of late. Sango did at one point try asking Kagome what it was she was trying to get over, but Kagome just cried harder and said she didn't want to talk about it.
The only one in reasonably good spirits was Shippo, who'd concluded that Kagome had just been saying things she didn't mean the previous night, and that she'd certainly get over the whole incident soon enough. Then his little substitute family would go back to normal, and everything would be fine.

After finding out that Ginta and Hakkaku had told Kagome about Inuyasha and Sesshomaru, and that she'd departed from the village, Kouga had been pretty disappointed. He'd really wanted to enjoy the scent and occasional sight of her while he was in heat. With Kagome herself absent, he'd wandered around the places that smelt of her, and had come across a little clearing with an old well that positively reeked of her. There he stayed, pleasuring himself to relieve the unpleasant symptoms of his heat while bathing in her unusual but pleasant smell.

When she suddenly showed up a couple of mornings later, he felt himself starting to blush, until he remembered she was human, and therefore incapable of smelling what he'd been doing there.
“Hey, Kagome! Are you alright?” He asked. She was crying, but nodded her head.
“That stupid mutt! He had some nerve doing that, behind your back and all!” He told her.
Kagome nodded again, sobbing as she sat down on the edge of the well.
“I can't believe he really did that! He must be sick in the head or something…with his own brother and all!” She said.
Kouga was somewhat taken aback. He'd expected her to be upset with Inuyasha and leave him, but obviously the problem was that he'd cheated on her, not who it was with! Sick? He remembered that she was human, and realised she was probably confused.
“Oh, no, being in heats just something that naturally happens, he isn't ill or anything.” He told her.
“Baka! I mean, something's wrong in his head, having sex with his brother! How disgusting!” Said Kagome, getting upset and angry at all the thinking about and mentioning of those terrible events. “anyway, I have to go now.” She added, and jumped into the well.

Kouga was surprised and confused to see her jump into the well and disappear, but the main shock was what she'd said. She thought it was disgusting Inuyasha had had sex with Sesshomaru because they were related? That kind of thing really pissed him off. He hadn't thought Kagome was the judgemental type of human, considering she hung around with hanyous and youkai all the time. And then suddenly she'd disappeared! He couldn't see her or smell her down in the well. Where had she gone? Kouga jumped down after her, but couldn't figure it out. It seemed to be just a normal well… anyway, it didn't really matter where she'd gone. The main concern was this new information she'd revealed about herself. She was already a lot less valuable as a mate now that there was no need for someone able to see shikon shards, since it was completed all but for one piece, and if she also had such an offensively ignorant attitude, a complete re-assessment of his feelings for her was probably in order. And what the fuck was up with that well?!

Byakuya was shortly asking himself the very same question. As Naraku had commanded, he'd sent his eye to spy on Kagome. With Inuyasha absent, and the final shikon shard in her hands, his master had been most interested in her movements.
When his eye returned and Byakuya viewed the scene with her suddenly jumping into the old well and not coming out, he was somewhat curious. The wolf had wandered off shortly after Kagome had disappeared, so the coast was clear for him to go take a look in peace. Was the miko merely hiding in the bottom of it for some reason, or was it something more interesting? Peering in, he could see that she was not inside. But he had not been so far away that he would have missed the racket she'd have made tramping through the forest, and he'd been keeping watch over the path back. Being a master of illusions, he always kept his scent disguised so the wolf had not noticed his presence, and he kept far enough away that the little miko hadn't been able to sense him either.
So Kagome had gone in…but Kagome had not come out? Given that his eye had also shown him that she'd handed the shikon shard into the taijiya's keeping that morning, and that Naraku had also seen everything via a link with said eye, Byakuya had a feeling there would be some new orders coming to him very soon. And they were unlikely to benefit anyone other than Naraku.

Inuyasha spent much of his time letting his lust for Sesshomaru drown out his guilt and pain over Kagome. When he was intimate with his brother, the horrible feelings stopped gnawing at his heart, to be replaced with mindless passion and pleasure. Afterwards, he'd lay in Sesshomaru's arms, ironically feeling safety and acceptance from one of the last people he'd ever imagined would make him feel that way. Sesshomaru was exactly what he needed at that time. He provided him with comfort, but didn't question him about the events or his feelings, once Inuyasha had demanded that he didn't say anything about it the one time he tried.
He knew better than to think it was out of understanding and concern for his feelings that the daiyoukai didn't bother him about it, but Inuyasha didn't care. It felt good to be with his brother. When he was close to his brother, Inuyasha could forget about the Kagome he had to deal with and the Naraku he had to kill, and it sometimes seemed like the world consisted of just the two of them. Sesshomaru was like a drug for him- he let him float in clouds of euphoria, and then when it wore off and the pains of reality hit, all Inuyasha wanted was to go back for more. But of course, he couldn't keep doing it. Time was passing, their heat was fading, and he would have to leave his brother and confront Kagome. The thought was very distressing.

Sesshomaru was no happier about the passing of time than his brother. These past few days of lust had been absolute bliss. He'd never experienced such pleasure in his life.
The only thing bothering him was Inuyasha's evident misery over the miko. All too often, he'd see that wistful, tormented look come into Inuyasha's eyes, and it never failed to drive him insane. Knowing he was so hurt by her, thinking about her, surely planning how he could get back with her… It utterly infuriated him, and each time he saw it, he felt an overwhelming urge to drive the accursed creature from his brother's mind the only way he knew how.
He much preferred to see Inuyasha's eyes filled with lust and passion for him, to hear his name on the hanyous lips, to see his face resting peacefully and contented against his chest.
Sesshomaru wondered if each time would be their last. Inuyasha would soon leave, to be taken back by his accursed miko, obviously it would be the end of their strange new relationship. And he definitely was not looking forward to that.
There was no doubt in his mind that the miko would take Inuyasha back. His brother was beautiful and powerful and she was extremely attached to him. No matter how foolish and foul-mouthed when upset she was, the disgusting little human would not be stupid enough to give Inuyasha up.
He could see his brother becoming more and more distressed as time went on, obviously nervous as to how he would approach the bitch. Soon, he would surely get up and declare that he was leaving to go to back to her. He would turn his back, and walk out of the cave, leaving him.
That was not acceptable.
If things were going to come to an end, he would be the one to end them.
Sesshomaru was not about to be left for some worthless, cheap little human bitch.
He stood, settled his mokomoko-sama over his shoulder, and ran a hand through his long silver hair.
“Inuyasha.” He said. The hanyou had been sitting across the cave from him, apparently thinking about the miko again, from the look on his face. He looked over at Sesshomaru.
“I tire of your company. Goodbye.” And with that, Sesshomaru strode out of the cave. It was high time he got back to his own little group, anyway.

Inuyasha glared at Sesshomaru's back as he disappeared. The bastard! He was `tired of his company'? Honestly, Inuyasha had feared Sesshomaru might say something far worse to him when his heat wore off and he was sick of him, but those words had cut into him like daggers.
It was all his own fault he was feeling so bad, he supposed. He'd known all along his brother was just using him for sex, but he'd been stupid enough to let himself feel accepted, cared for even, that he'd actually been hurt when faced with the reality of the situation. He felt pathetic. He'd let Sesshomaru use him for sex, ruining his only chance at being loved, and then allowed his feelings to be damaged even worse. He had to be the most idiotic being living in the whole world.
After taking some time to sulk and piece together what little fragments of pride and self worth he had left, Inuyasha finally picked himself up off the cave floor and left.
He at least owed Kagome another apology and a proper explanation, and he needed to find out what was to become of their group after all this drama. He was feeling completely like shit in every way, but figuring it was best to get it over and done with as soon as possible, Inuyasha determined himself to travel throughout the night.

Sure enough, Byakuya was approached by a saimyoushou late that evening. The poisonous little insect perched itself on his finger and communicated Naraku's orders, then flew off again. As usual, Naraku had hatched himself a twisted little plan, and Byakuya was to be the main accessory.

Kouga found Sango and Miroku washing some things for Kaede in the river after dinner. He explained his earlier encounter with Kagome to them, and demanded to know why she seemed more concerned that Inuyasha had slept with his brother than that he'd cheated to begin with, and why she'd disappeared without a trace into the well.
“You see, that well is a portal to a strange land which only Kagome-sama, Inuyasha, and the occasional lower level youkai can use. The land she comes from is populated only by humans, and rather odd ones at that. I believe living there has given Kagome-sama an unusual mind set.” Explained Miroku.
Kouga thought for a moment. It was very strange, but now that he considered it, being from a different land explained many things that had fascinated him about Kagome. Her weird clothing, that tasty but meatless food in the colourful, odd-smelling wrapping she'd given him, her naïve, unique outlook on life, her lack of fear concerning youkai. Probably, that lack of fear was actually a product of lack of knowledge rather than bravery, he figured. There seemed to be a lot he hadn't known about her.
“So she's got weird ideas from the humans that live there did she?” He asked.
“It seems that way. Of course, being intimate with one's family isn't done amongst human here either, but it looks like in Kagome's land, it's viewed as a very disgusting crime, and I believe it's a bit unusual for two males to be together there also.” Replied Sango.
“Oh.” Said Kouga. It looked like Kagome was a very different person than he'd taken her for. And now that he wasn't very much in heat anymore, he really had more important thing to concern himself with, like finding Naraku. “Well, I'm off then. See ya's.”
And with that, he was gone.
“So do you think Kagome really does think Inuyasha is disgusting now and it wasn't just because she was so shocked and upset?” Asked Miroku.
“I don't know…she really did feel disgusted, but whether or not that means she think he is disgusting, or if she will continue to feel that way…I'm not sure.” Replied Sango.

Kagome had spent the entire day and night crying, refusing to talk to her mama or even come down for dinner. When she woke up the next morning, she felt emotionally drained, and starving hungry.
Breakfast was awkward. She couldn't pretend everything was alright, considering her behaviour the day before and her red, puffy eyes, but she didn't want to talk about it. There was no way she was about to confess to her mama, ji-san and Souta what Inuyasha had done, and they seemed apprehensive to ask her about it.
Souta opened his mouth to question her once or twice, but Mrs Higurashi did her usual trick of suddenly making a cheerful comment about the food and shoving it into his open mouth.
Kagome finished her meal as quickly as possible, then went outside to sit by the goshinboku for a while. It wasn't long before her mother quietly came and sat beside her.
“Kagome? You know you can tell your mama anything, don't you?”
“I know, mama. It's just not something I'm ready to talk about yet.” She replied.
“Did someone hurt you, Kagome?” Asked her mother, sounding worried.
Kagome shook her head.
“Just my feelings. I...I'll be alright, mama, I just need some time..” Said Kagome, sadly.
She did feel ready to talk about it, but this was not something she could talk to her mama about. Her mama hugged her, and she let herself cry on her shoulder for a little while. She felt better after that, and went back inside to clean her face off before heading to the well house.
She wanted to talk to Sango, and maybe Miroku too, to help sort herself out before she spoke to Inuyasha when he came back. Whether they seemed to understand her feelings about it or not, they knew the situation, and were always very understanding and great advice givers. She'd listen to what they had to say, and maybe it would help her sort out her jumbled thoughts and feelings. With that resolve, she went inside, and jumped into the well. Only, nothing happened. There was no flying sensation, no purplish light around her, and when she looked up, there was no sunny sky, and the dirty wooden roof of the well house was still above her.
