Consequences- Chapter Eight
“Miroku? Those things Kagome said aren't really true, are they? You don't think what Inuyasha did is disgusting as well, do you?” Asked the little kitsune, urgently.
“No, of course not Shippo! I'm sure Kagome only said that because she's feeling very upset and confused right now.” Replied the monk.
“But she seems really sure!” Said Shippo.
“Well, in the place where she comes from, it's probably normal to think things like that are wrong. I'm sure she'll understand better when she calms down a bit and takes some time to think about it. Don't let it worry you.” Said Miroku.
Shippo crossed his arms and looked concerned.
“I hope she doesn't really think so. I used to have a little sister, and she was going to be my mate. If Kagome thinks that's disgusting I won't forgive her!” He declared. They continued walking for a little bi6t, then Shippo suddenly paused, and sniffed at the ground.
“Inuyasha was just here!” He exclaimed.
“He was?”
“He definitely was!”
“Which way did he go in, Shippo? I need to go talk to him.” Said Miroku.
“He went this way! I want to come too!” Replied the kitsune.
“I think it would be better if I went by myself. You go help Sango calm Kagome down, alright?”
“alright.” Agreed Shippo, sulkily.
Miroku hastened off in the direction Shippo had pointed him. It took him a little while, but he eventually found Inuyasha perched on a large rock some distance away.
He turned around and glared at Miroku when he approached.
“What do you want?” Inuyasha's accusing tone ascertained for Miroku that he had overheard Sango and Kagome talking as he'd suspected.
“Are you alright?” He asked.
“Why are you here? You people were supposed to go back the village.” Said Inuyasha.
“We did, but then Kouga showed up and…Kagome heard some things from Ginta and Hakkaku, and insisted on coming to look for you. She's very upset and confused.” Replied Miroku.
“She didn't sound very confused.” Sneered Inuyasha. Miroku sighed, and seated himself near his friend.
“I'm sure she only said those things because she's so distraught. Kagome-sama cares for you very much, Inuyasha. We can hardly blame her for being a little…irrational, considering what you've done. What have you been thinking, cheating on her like this?” Asked Miroku.
“It just kinda…happened. Leave me alone. I'm not in the mood for a guilt trip.” Inuyasha told him.
“I don't mean to make you feel guilty! I just wanted to talk to you because I was wanted to know what was going on, and was worried about you, especially after you obviously overheard Kagome just now. Nobody agrees with what she was saying, you know.” Said Miroku.
“Oh really? I can run off and have sex with my brother, and that's fine with you, is it?” Inuyasha asked, his tone bitter.
“Well, I can't say I think this is a good thing you've done to Kagome, but I don't really see anything else wrong with it. From what I understand, there's nothing weird about youkai or hanyou doing such things. What I don't understand is how this could have happened! I thought Sesshomaru hated you?” Miroku asked him.
“So did I! He probably still does! I don't even really know how it happened- I realised I was in heat, so I went to that cave to try to wait it out peacefully, and he just showed up, and…things happened. I couldn't even think clearly enough to remember I wouldn't normally do that.” Replied Inuyasha.
“I see. I didn't think you would have intended for any of this to happen. So, you'll have to talk to Kagome about this once she's calmed down somewhat. She'll probably want to go back to her world for a few days and have some space, but I'm sure you two can still work things out.” Said Miroku.
“Keh! Yeah right. Didn't you hear her? She thinks I'm sick, and disgusting. I don't think I want to work things out with someone who thinks that.”
“I'm sure she doesn't really think so, Inuyasha! Young females like that are unable to think logically when very upset like this, and prone to saying things they don't mean and later badly regret. I know she said some awful things, but try not to place to much weight on them.” Miroku told him.
“So the only ones who thinks I'm sick and disgusting is Kagome, huh?” Asked Inuyasha.
“Nobody at all really thinks that, Inuyasha!” Said the monk.
“Whatever.” Said Inuyasha.
When Shippo had returned alone, Sango immediately wanted to know where Miroku had gone, and if everything was alright.
“He went to talk to Inuyasha. Kagome, you don't really think those things you said before, do you?” Asked Shippo.
“But Inuyasha is with Sesshomaru! Something could happen to him!” Exclaimed Kagome.
“No, it's ok, I smelled Inuyasha near here so he's not with Sesshomaru now. Inuyasha wouldn't let anyone hurt Miroku anyway.” Shippo told her.
“He's near here?” Asked Kagome.
“He was, but he left again. Probably because he maybe heard the mean things you said.” Said Shippo.
Kagome got up.
“Kagome-chan? Do you really think going to see Inuyasha right now is such a good idea?” Asked Sango, concerned. With the state Kagome was in, she would probably do their relationship more harm than good.
“I at least need some answers from him, Sango-chan. You stay here and look after Shippo, alright?” Said Kagome, wiping at her eyes.
“Are you going to apologise to Inuyasha now?” Asked Shippo as she walked off.
Renewed sobbing was his only answer.
Miroku had just succeeded in getting Inuyasha to agree with him that both he and Kagome were feeling very hurt at the moment, and they both might feel differently with the passing of some time allowing their heads to be clearer, when the miko arrived.
She was still crying, now feeling more hurt than angry at what Inuyasha had done. Finally finding him, she was no longer sure that confronting him about it was at all a good idea, and had no idea what she wanted to say.
So she just stood there, staring at him.
Inuyasha just stared back. Kagome was about the last person in the world he felt like talking to at that moment. He knew he needed to apologise to her for his actions, but was feeling much too hurt and angry about what she'd said earlier to do so. And probably, he figured, she'd just come to tell him those things to his face!
“What? Aren't you too disgusted to talk to a sick pervert like me?” He asked.
Kagome paused. So he really had heard those things she'd said! But… they were true! Right? What Inuyasha had done had been very disgusting, in her mind.
So why did she suddenly feel like she was the disgusting one?
Kagome decided it would be best if she could just find out what she wanted to know, and get as far away from Inuyasha as she could. It would be easier on both of them if they didn't see each other for a while.
“Why did you do that?” She asked, the words partially obscured by her continued sobbing.
“I'm so sorry, Kagome… I'm in heat, and I lost control of myself. I never meant for this to happen.” He told her.
“Osuwari!” Kagome yelled. She had to do something to punish him, she just hadn't been able to come up with any words… And with that, she ran away again, leaving Inuyasha feeling lower than the dirt his face was planted in.
“Well, I suppose that could have gone worse…” Said Miroku.
Inuyasha picked himself up off the ground, looking dismally off in the direction Kagome had gone.
“Inuyasha? We'll need to leave for the village again tomorrow. You'll come with us, right?” Miroku asked him.
Inuyasha shook his head. Obviously, things between him and Kagome were very much over. Why didn't the monk understand that? Seeing each other would only be painful for both of them, and make things even worse. Maybe if he left her alone for a while, and they could talk again when they were both a little less upset, there might be a chance of still being friends…depending on how disgusting Kagome really thought he was now.
“That'll just make things worse, idiot. I'll come back on my own and talk to her in a couple of days or something.” He said.
Miroku thought for a moment. Inuyasha was probably right- both of them were so stubborn and argumentative with each other, they probably would end up making the problem worse if they didn't have some time apart. And that way he and Sango could have more time to talk to Kagome about things. It would be terrible if she continued to keep her initial feelings of disgust about what Inuyasha had done.
“I suppose you may be right. Try not to judge her to badly for her appalling reaction, though, Inuyasha, you know how idiotic and temperamental she can be regarding matters of faithfulness.” He said.
Miroku supposed it was not really so surprising the miko had such a strong reaction.
She felt so deeply for Inuyasha. It had been difficult for Kagome when Kikyou had been around, when Inuyasha would so often disappear to meet her and Kagome would not know exactly what they'd been up to together.
No wonder she had somewhat of a complex regarding Inuyasha cheating. Not to mention she was very young, and came from a strange place with odd ideas on things.
“Keh. I want to be alone for a while. I'll see you in a couple of days.” Said Inuyasha. He stood up and started to leave.
“Oh yeah,” He added, “If those wolves are still there when you get back, tell them they'd better be long gone before I get there.”
“Very well…” Said Miroku. He watched his friend walk off, vaguely wondering whether he was going back to Sesshomaru. He'd thought of asking, but didn't want to risk upsetting the hanyou. Then he stood up and chased after Kagome.
“What did he say to you?” The teary miko asked when he caught up to her.
“Mostly just what he told you, Kagome-sama. He really didn't intend for such a thing to happen, you know.” Miroku told her.
“Then why did he let it?!” She cried.
“Perhaps he just couldn't help himself…Sango said that these…instincts can be very strong, and he could not have been thinking clearly…he is obviously very regretful.” Replied Miroku.
“regretful? But it's been days! Days, Miroku! And he's stayed with him the whole time!”
He didn't really know what to say to that.
“I don't want to talk about it anyway. Let's just go back to camp.” She said.
Inuyasha spent several hours wandering randomly through the forest, his mind a mess of misery and anger. He bitterly regretted having ever stumbled into that cave. If only he'd just stayed with his friends, or Sesshomaru hadn't shown up, things could have gone on as normal. Occasionally, he felt tears beginning to well up in his eyes, but he was well practiced in willing them away, and refused to let a single one fall.
He felt weak, and stupid for having so easily been overtaken with lust and ruined everything for himself. But the thing that hurt most were Kagome's words about him. They cut into his heart like knives, and he regretted having chased after her and hearing them even more than he regretted having sex with his brother.
It had always been a fear in the back of his mind that Kagome's affection for him really was too good to be true, that one day he'd finally do something so stupid he'd ruin it for himself forever, or that she'd suddenly change her feelings for him. Now both had happened, and he wished he could disappear from the world, or at least be knocked unconscious so that he wouldn't have to deal with it for a while.
The one good thing about being sealed to the tree for those fifty ears was that he'd escaped much of the pain of Kikyou's apparent betrayal. He'd had such a short time after the event, and then when he'd woken up, it had all been such a long time past he was able to feel distanced from it to a large degree.
As he began search for a suitable place to settle down and try to comfort himself, his feet unconsciously led him back in the direction of the cave. He was too caught up in his misery to notice where he'd been heading until he saw Sesshomaru standing a little way ahead of him. Had his brother maybe come looking for him? Inuyasha didn't feel like being around Sesshomaru, who probably just wanted to have sex with him again. That was the last thing he needed. He turned, and began walking back the other way.
“Inuyasha.” His brother's soft call halted him in his steps.
“What?!” He demanded.
“Aren't you coming back?” Asked Sesshomaru.
“No! I just wandered here by accident. Leave me alone.” Said Inuyasha.
“The miko was very upset with you then?”
Inuyasha glared. He had some nerve, asking something like that! It was largely all Sesshomaru's fault! And he knew much better than to think his brother was asking out of some kind of concern for him. Was he trying to rub it in or something?
“Bastard! Like it's any of your business! This is mostly your fucking fault, anyway!” He tried to yell the statement at his brother, but it came out kind of choked sounding, making Inuyasha feel stupid. The last thing he wanted was for Sesshomaru to realise how upset he was over it.
“I was merely asking what happened, Inuyasha. Are you not re-joining your companions?” Asked Sesshomaru.
“No! Now I might never be able to! You want to know what happened?! She Fucking hates me! She thinks I'm a pathetic, sick, disgusting pervert! And-“
“She what?” Demanded Sesshomaru. The little miko had no right to apply such words to Inuyasha over their actions. And if she was applying them to Inuyasha, she meant them of himself, also. Completely intolerable.
“I got to say one sentence to her, and she `sits' me, and runs off! Like she can't even stand to look at me now!” Continued Inuyasha.
“How disgusting. I told you she was unworthy of you. You should have known better than to invest your emotions in such a pathetic creature.” Sesshomaru hadn't intended the words to be hurtful, but Inuyasha narrowed his eyes and turned away from him.
“Just leave me alone.” He said. Sesshomaru was surprised at the depth of misery evident in Inuyasha's voice. Surely Inuyasha would be used to receiving such insults, being a hanyou? Or had the miko held more power over him than he had realised? Knowing that she'd said such things infuriated him, but seeing Inuyasha in such a state of misery for some reason, bothered him even more.
“That miko had no right to say such things. You should be glad that her true nature has been revealed.” He told him.
Inuyasha didn't really know what to think. He didn't think he was disgusting, and he was deeply hurt that Kagome did. But he was also deeply ashamed with the way he'd treated her…which of them should he be more upset with- Kagome or himself? Was she really not as great as he'd thought? Or had Miroku been right saying that she didn't really mean it? It was confusing, and everything about the situation was extremely upsetting. Crawling into a little hole and dying would be preferable to this. He felt a light touch as Sesshomaru placed a hand on his back.
“Sulking in the forest will achieve nothing. Come back and sleep.”
Inuyasha let himself be directed back toward the cave. He was too miserable to refuse any kind of affection, and at least it was somewhere warm, a place where he was welcome. Maybe he could just go to sleep, and wake up in the morning to find that Kagome and the others had never really shown up there, and it had all been a dream.
Inuyasha's quiet obedience in coming back with him only bothered Sesshomaru more. He walked wit his eyes downcast and ears drooping slightly, saying nothing. The miko's words had damaged him much more than Sesshomaru had thought, and he felt tempted turn around and seek her out and send her directly to hell with tenseiga. It was not alright for some human to damage what was his! Not that Inuyasha was really his, but he felt some kind of claim over him considering their blood relation and recent activities. He could not tolerate such insults and damage dealt to Inuyasha by some human girl.
At least it seemed the relationship had come to an end, and his brother would no longer disgrace himself with her. Inuyasha would not be stupid enough to allow himself to be hurt twice in such a way…no, wait. He already had! Look at what that first miko had done. No wonder Inuyasha was so deeply depressed, after having had his two relationships with human females end so badly. Sesshomaru was quite sure that the only thing he wanted from his relationship with Inuyasha was sex, but he was not going to treat him dishonourably in the process.
He led him into the cave, and settled him down in his lap beside the dying fire. Inuyasha tensed at first as though he was going to protest, but seemed to change his mind, and made himself comfortable in his arms instead.
Sesshomaru could tell that the hanyou wanted comfort but not speech, so he remained silent, and just held his little brother until he eventually fell asleep.
