“Shall we?” Inuyasha said confidently, pointing at the large dining room door. Kagome's heart skipped a beat and she looked stupidly at the door then at Inuyasha and repeat. He seemed surprised by her flabbergasted expression and quirked an eyebrow. Her mouth opened several times, but she couldn't get any words out.

`He must think I am stupid,' she thought, mortified by her own behaviour. But despite this, she couldn't help but be taken aback by this little incident. Inuyasha was pointing at the dining room? As if he knew exactly where it was? Out of five doors that were obvious from the hall, how come he'd chosen the correct one? What sort of coincidence was that?

“Are you going to say anything? Or shall we go to the dining room?” he asked with an impassionate face, which somehow brought a nervous feeling to Kagome's gut. It was as if… she knew that look from somewhere. She quickly shook the feeling off and hurried to reply.

“H-how do you know where the dining room is?”

Inuyasha nearly tripped on his feet and his eyes widened, before he forced out a wide smile. It was fake; that much was obvious even to her. Kagome frowned.

“It… was a wild guess. Let's go,” he rushed her and led her to the room. For a second, she thought he was going to reach for the well-hidden matches to light the fireplace, but he stopped midway looking wistful and went to pour some whiskey in two crystal glasses.

“I guess I won't have to ask if you like whisky,” he pointed out, a bitter smile on his face and Kagome found herself once again frowning.

“What do you mean?” she asked, sitting on a chair.

His head snapped to lock gazes with her and his eyebrows had almost reached his bangs. He seemed to be struggling for an explanation and smiled instead.

“What I meant is, you have a lot of whisky here. It must mean you enjoy it.”

“My husband likes it,” she added swiftly and his eyebrows knitted together in a slight frown.

“Does he, really?”

“Y-yes,” she said reluctantly. There was something about this man that unnerved her. He seemed so familiar with her. And she felt she knew him from somewhere…

`Maybe he resembles someone I once knew,' she figured.

“What are we having for dinner?” she wondered aloud, not realising it.

“Roasted chicken, medium rare,” he replied and she started a bit. She felt embarrassed that she had spoken out loud.

“That is my favourite,” she told him with a smile.

“I know,” he acknowledged almost instantly and saw Kagome's expression morph into one of confusion. “The… servants told me,” he explained. “So, Lady Kagome… May I call you that?”

“Of course,” she answered. She wasn't ready for him to call her Kagome yet. She felt that would be entirely too personal.

“Very well. I have heard that you are friends with Lady Caroline.”

“I have heard so as well,” she mumbled casually.

“Sorry?” Inuyasha seemed taken aback.

“Oh. I mean, yes. We are good friends,” Kagome told him. `Oh, God. Help me,' she prayed desperately.

“Then I shall have another favour to ask of you,” He looked at the glasses of whisky in front of him. “If it is not too much trouble,” he added.

“Of… of course,” she replied, trying to be as cheerful as possible. She had a bad feeling about where this was heading. What did he want from her now? She didn't even know Lady Caroline. Technically.

“So is it safe to say you do not want your whisky?” he asked, avoiding the Caroline subject for a moment. Kagome wondered if she should try it. She didn't remember having drunk whisky. Ever. But that was because her memories were of the time when she was still a teenager. An unmarried teenager.

“Yes, I do,” she said and his mood seemed to be improving. He smiled brightly and positioned the glass in front of her before sitting down right next to her. Was that even proper? Her heart beat quickened in response and she felt the whiskey wasn't such a good idea, after all. She was tempted not to drink it, but knew she had to, now that she'd requested it.

“I want you to give this to Lady Caroline,” he said, leaning a bit towards her so that she leaned backwards in response and he reached an odd object for her to take. She studied it in his palm for a second. It resembled a box, but it was too tiny to fit anything inside. It was fairly intricate and had a lot of designs across it; it simply looked breathtaking.

“What is it?” she asked, grasping it, very careful not to drop it. Even though it was small, it had a lot of drawings and engravings on it and they all seemed so big and detailed. It looked magical.

Inuyasha avoided her question, however. “If Lady Caroline is not at home, you can leave it to her sister,” he suggested. Kagome almost expressed her surprise that Lady Caroline had a sister, but she swallowed the remark. She knew he would become suspicious.

Inuyasha looked pensive for a moment, gazing at her big eyes. The whole, blissful world seemed to swirl inside her liquid orbs and his breath got trapped in his throat for a few seconds, until he caught himself. Kagome didn't miss this, as she was transfixed, too. He really was a very handsome specimen.

“Is there a problem?” she asked meekly, her voice barely above a whisper.

“You have beautiful eyes,” he said promptly, startling the woman in front of him.

“Th-thank you,” she stuttered.

His face was gradually leaning towards hers and she closed her eyes instinctively not knowing what she was doing when the doors snapped open to reveal several servants bringing large trays of food. Both Inuyasha and Kagome put some distance between them, their heads bent low, waiting for the servants to leave.

The secret passageway clattered with life as the woman once again made her way to her lover's office. She had received notice from him. He had something for her to do. She briefly wondered what it was, because every time he had her do something it wasn't pleasant at all.

Entering the large room, she wasn't surprised to see him work at his desk.

“My darling,” he greeted. “Come. Take a sit.” His tone was grave and elicited a frightened shudder from her. She wasn't scared of him normally, but it took moments like this for her to want to avoid him at all costs.

Whatever had happened, it wasn't good.

“Did you really give him what I asked you to?” he asked her grimly. Her panic rose to incredible levels as she tried to figure out what could have possibly happened.

“I swear I did,” she said.

“Well, then. We have a problem,” he said, smirking dangerously.

“Wh… what sort of a problem?” she asked mildly. She really didn't want to know.
“As I have suspected… it was not enough. I need more,” he said mysteriously and - for a second - she didn't understand what he was talking about.

“I don't know why you insist that we don't speak freely, lover,” she complained and he was quick as a lightning in grabbing her neck and pushing her against the dirty surface of his desk. He'd been experimenting again. She felt grime coat her hair and grimaced in disgust.

“Anyone can be hearing this conversation; do you understand, lover? Now shut up and figure something out. Go get me more of it,” he demanded, releasing her harshly as she quickly brought a trembling hand to her neck.

“Careful,” she warned, her voice still shaky. “I am not as helpless as you think.”

His eyes snapped up to hers, as he stood tensely with his two hands propped on the desk.

“Is that a threat?” he asked, his eyes narrowed to dangerous slits.

“Take it as you wish, but never treat me like this again,” she said sternly. She was relieved to hear him sigh.

“You are right. I am sorry… but I am very uptight and nervous. Our plan is this close to being blown up. Please, find me more of it as soon as possible.”

“All right,” she agreed then remembered something. “How are our girls?”

“In the dungeon, where they belong,” he answered casually and she giggled.

“Oh, you take such good care of them,” she praised him proudly.

“I hope not,” he replied smiling charmingly, before refocusing his attention on his work.

“I am off now, lover,” she told him but didn't move from her spot next to him. After a few moments of being subjected to her sharp stare, he looked up at her inquisitively. She didn't say anything, but pulled him in for a passionate kiss instead. When he seemed lost with desire, she rubbed his crotch heatedly, licking his bottom lip.

“I'll be here by tonight,” she announced, breaking the kiss as he whimpered in mild protest. “I'll take care of this then,” she said, looking down at the `problem' that had arisen.

“Is that a promise?” he asked, grinning.

“Take it as you wish,” she said heatedly, repeating her earlier serious words. Before leaving, she blew him a kiss and he smirked at her devilishly.

“Audrey!”

“Come on! Snap out of it, please!”

“Audrey!”

“Audrey, dear!”

The shouts seemed to be useless until a deep grunt echoed in the dark dungeon.

“Audrey?!” Lady Caroline asked panicky.

“Wh-where am I?” a weak voice inquired.

“Audrey, thank goodness!” Caroline exclaimed. “You are alive! How are you?”

“I feel like I have been hit by a flying house,” she groaned meekly and the others laughed for the first time in a long time.

“Oh, Audrey,” Jane cried out, on the verge of crying.

“I think I have hit my head in the torture room,” Audrey told them. “It hurts so much that I feel like crying.”

“Do not cry now! Your tears will cool up on your cheeks and it will be very uncomfortable because you cannot wipe them away.”

“Tell me about it!” Jane complained, her cheeks awfully sticky.

“You are such a whiny baby,” Audrey told her, her mood slightly improving. She was the most optimistic of the four and they were glad to have her back. Maybe she could lighten up the spirits around here as usual.

“Oh, I have got a joke for you!” Audrey said suddenly and the others prepared themselves for a good laugh.

“There were two snake brothers slithering across the desert,” she began, but Jane interrupted her.

“What is a desert?”

“It is an arid region, Jane,” Lady Caroline explained patiently.

“The younger brother asked the other, `Big broth-thth-er, are we venomoussss sssssnakesss?'

`Leave-vvvv me alone now. I'm conce-sssss-ntrating,' the older brother complained.

They walked some more and the younger brother disturbed the other one again. `Big broth-thth-er,' he said, `are we venomoussss sssssnakesss?'

The older brother got angry and yelled at him, `Why do you asssssk?!'

`Because-sssss… I jusssst bit my tongue”

The four women, including Audrey burst out laughing, tears rolling down their cheeks until they ended up crying.

“I am sorry,” Caroline suddenly said. “I am so sorry for asking you to come out with me on that day,” she apologised. “I am guilty for our situation!”

“Don't say that, child,” Kaede tried to soothe her.

“I have got another one,” Audrey announced and the others stopped crying and paid attention to her every word. “I have just come up with it. Don't get mad, Kaede; you know we all love you. Here it goes. Jane and her mother, Caroline, were heading to Jane's grandmother, Kaede. `Are we there yet, mommy?' asked Jane impatiently. Her mother's answer was a curt, `Shut up and dig!'”

Again, the four women laughed very hard, until they heard some rattling noises above them. Fear settled inside their bones and they stood still, fearing that the Caveman would come to torture them again.

“Do you have a wife, Inuyasha?” Kagome asked casually.

“No,” he answered, looking at his spoon. “And I am not planning on getting married soon, either,” he confessed.

“Do you think marriage is a bad thing?” Kagome asked and was taken aback when he answered so abruptly and grudgingly.

“Most definitely.”

“Why?” she asked, bringing the full spoon to her lips.

“It just seems that way to me,” he said and gave her a brief smile. “So,” he said, changing the subject, “how come you like to treat diseases? Is it because of a passion?”

“Oh, yes… A passion, indeed,” she answered truthfully, her cheeks red because of his attention. It was her passion for him that had driven her to learn about cures and herbs.

His charming smile could have lit the whole room and she wondered why a beautiful man like him didn't want to settle down and have a family of his own. Perhaps he was a libertine at heart. Or maybe he was one literally. She frowned at that last thought, but decided to cheer up before he would notice.

Being here with Inuyasha Taisho, eating at the same table and chatting casually, she decided her new life wasn't so bad after all.
