Chapter 4- Heat: part 1

Rina blushed at his words, "wha-!?" Sesshomaru looked at her, "you never knew? What kind of parent would not tell their young about it?" Rina looked at the ground, "my parents were always secretive. They never spoke to me much anyway."

Sesshomaru turned to leave, "do as you wish. But I advise you not to leave the castle grounds. And Rin will accompany you to keep you out of harm's way." "why her? she's only a little girl," Rina asked. "the youkai and humans around here know of her. They know what would happen to them if one of them touched her," Sesshomaru said as he left the room.

Rina stood there for a while before leaving the room. Rin waited outside the door. She smiled up at the neko/kitsune, "Konichiwa!" Rina returned the smile, "hi." Rin grabbed her hand, "will you play with me? we can pick flowers!" Rina nodded as the young girl pulled her out into the garden.

Rin ran around the garden picking different types of flowers for her flower-necklace. Rina sat in a patch of wildflowers just watching her, *she seems so carefree…I remember when that's how I was…but things are different than they were…and this human girl will only die eventually…never to see the future which she could help create…*

Rin halted her running and looked at the dazed youkai female, "Rina-sama? Are you okay?" Rina came back to reality at the sound of Rin's voice, "huh? Hai…I'm fine. No need to worry, Rin." Just then a chill went down Rina's back. She froze, *what the-!?*

She looked around the area, *someone's here…but who?* Just then a shadow attacked the ten-year-old girl, knocking her out cold. Rina stood up and ran to her side, "RIN!!" She fell to the ground when she felt a hand grasp her wrist.

She jumped up and broke free of the person's grip only to get snatched down by the figure. Rina tried to scream but her voice was muffled by a gag. She kicked the figure and threw it off of her, removing the gag, *damn these people! Don't they know not to attack me?*

Just then a ring of fire surrounded her and the unconscious Rin. Rina covered her mouth and nose to protect herself from the smoke. Then the figure jumped at her, knocking her to the ground unconscious.

Rina awoke in her room with Rin lying next to her. As she sat up she noticed most of her clothing had either been burnt or ripped. She covered her exposing parts, *what the hell!? What the fuck happened!? Oh yeah…that…thing attacked us…*

Rina stood up and grabbed the extra kimono that lay on the ground in the corner. She walked out of the room and roamed down the corridor. Jaken then ran up to her, "are you alright vixen!? Sesshomaru-sama told me what had happened!" Rina glared at him, "change of heart, Jaken?" Jaken then realized what she meant, "no! I was just worried a bit is all! Besides, I don't take orders from a vixen! Not even one of royalty!"

Rina shook her head in pity as she walked past him. Jaken ran down the hall as she reached another hall and ran into Sesshomaru. He looked at her, "what are you doing out of bed?" Rina glared at him, "I can leave the room if I want!" Sesshomaru returned the glare, "not after that incident. Rin was hurt and so were you. I'm not risking that again. The only reason you're here is to keep Rin company."

Rina fell to her knees, "then what's the point of keeping me around if I can't even protect the human girl? I'm just a waist of your time if you ask me. I'm no good to anyone…" Sesshomaru knelt down to her eye-level, "not entirely true. You're in heat. It's hard for someone so young to put up a fight. You'll get stronger over the years. Besides, I personally suggest you take one of the youkai in my lands as your mate."

"and why is that?" Rina asked. "it'll keep lustful youkai away from you when you're in heat," Sesshomaru said. "why do youkai males go so crazy when a female's in heat anyway?" Rina wondered. Sesshomaru took a deep breath and sighed, soon regretting it, "when a female's in heat, her scent changes to where no male can really resist. And if the female hasn't chosen a mate she is hunted and is eventually raped."

Rina froze. She hated that word. It reminded her of home too much. Sesshomaru took another breath, taking in her scent, "and you're in heat now. Which means you are not in the safest time." Rina blinked, "then why aren't you…? wait…you are…" Sesshomaru nodded slightly, "I am affected by your scent. But I'm trying my best not to rut with you right now…"

Rina stood up, "maybe I should go…" Sesshomaru grabbed her wrist and pulled her down back to her knees, "I say again, don't leave your room for a few days. It's for your own good." Rina nodded as he released her wrist and she walked to her room. Sesshomaru stood and walked into his study.

He collapsed against the wall, *dammit all…her scent is too strong…I almost lost it right then…I can see why she was attacked…with Rin around her, she'll be an easy target for youkai…* He stood up as Jaken walked into the room. "MILORD!?" Jaken said in both panic and worry, "are you alright?" Sesshomaru took a deep breath, "get Rin out of Rina's room. Take her to her own room. And fast."

"but milord," Jaken protested, "may I ask why?" "the vixen is in heat and will only get herself, not to mention Rin, in danger. She'll put up a better fight against intruders when Rin's not there," Sesshomaru explained, "now go!" Jaken fumbled with his staff, "y-yes milord!"
