Chapter 2: Below the Belt

Sango watched amused as Miroku dodged the footballs InuYasha aimed for his head. Miroku ducked a particularly vicious one that managed to graze his head. Sango turned her gaze from the ‘practicing’ football players to the cheerleaders. Her gaze settled on a particular raven-haired beauty. The girl had walked up to the captain and asked for a position on the team. Sango could still hear the insults thrown back and forth between the two girls.

~Flashback~

Sango leaned against the locker she used and pulled on her jersey that she was assigned to practice with. A voice caused her to stop halfway and listen intently to the conversation.

“Can you believe the new girl actually thinks she can be on my team?” a preppy voice said.

“Really? She must be a retard to think you would just allow anybody on your team.” a high-pitched voice said in reply.

“Did you just call me a retard?” a slightly angry voice asked.

“Yes and I take that back.” Kikyo said calmly.

“Thank you,” the new girl Kagome said.

“You’re a slut.” Kikyo said.

“I’m a what!” Kagome screeched.

“A whore, wench, slut or somebody who sleeps with anybody.” Kikyo said sarcastically.

“I am not. While you who seems to be able to know these words perfectly, you are the whore who’s easy.” Kagome said as she walked passed Sango’ locker.

Kikyo followed her and was about to hit the girl in the back but Sango intervened. She grabbed Kikyo’s wrist and pushed her back. “That is dishonorable. You never attack from the back.” Sango said as she release the girl’s wrist causing Kikyo to stumble back.

“Thank you.” Kagome said turning around to watch Kikyo storm off muttering something about whores and sluts to herself.

“You’re welcome. Though I would watch out for that one.” Sango said as she finished pulling on her shirt.

“Wait are you the one who clapped in first period?” Kagome asked just as Sango turned to leave.

“Yeah. I’m Sango,” she told the girl.

“Kagome, though I’m sure you heard my name when the teacher introduced me.” Kagome said kindly without a trace of sarcasm.

“Cool. Well I have to go practice.” Sango told her lifting her helmet up.

“Is it okay if I watch you play? Since they won’t let me join the team and I told my mom I wouldn’t be home for another hour or so.” Kagome asked, her vice full of hope. ‘Does this girl have any friends?’ Sango asked herself. ‘She’s the popular type but she doesn’t act it.’ Sango mused to herself.

“It’s okay it might get boring though the Varsity football team practices today also….” Sango left off thinking about somebody.

“Okay. Thank you.” Kagome said happily.

~E.O.F.~

So Sango was sitting on the bench waiting for the coach to pick her and tell her what to do. She watched the girl with interest then turned to the football team and a certain pervert. She watched their coach tell them to run a lap and watched as InuYasha tripped Miroku and caused the unfortunate boy to fall face first in the mud.

“Hidaka! This is no time for a mud bath! Takahashi keep those feet on the ground! Yoshihito don’t look at the ground when you run! When Takahashi isn’t barreling through the other team you have to make sure the ball stays on our side! Hidaka I told you to stay out of the mud!” the coach shouted at the jogging boys. Miroku had once again mysteriously tripped and fell in the mud again.

Sango shook her head and stood when her coach put her in the mock game. She was the best player they had and he saved her for last. Their secret weapon. On a team full of boys who would expect a girl to be filled with so much stamina and cunning. Not to mention the strength she could put into the tackles she gave out. Yep she was the wimpy girl who packed a punch. She lifted her head up high and went onto the mud covered field. Today was her day as she saw the expressions on the opposite team faces. She was good, and they knew that, they wanted her on the Varsity but she refused saying she rather not take the star’s place on that team.

**Kagome**

She watched the guys run around the track that circled the football field. Her eyes however were focused on a certain dark haired teen. She watched him run past several of the guys and lap them. When they finally stopped he hadn’t even broken a sweat. His buddy the pervert was panting heavily and his clothing was covered in mud.

She watched as the coach pointed to the locker rooms and a hoard of sweaty males ran to the showers they knew was waiting. All of them except InuYasha. The coach appeared to be yelling at him and InuYasha was yelling back. Finally after a few minutes InuYasha stalked off to the locker room. She turned to the Jr. Varsity players and watched as Sango weaved in and out of the guys and made several touchdowns. She clapped and stopped as soon as she realized Sango wouldn’t hear her. She sighed again when she realized Sango wouldn’t talk to her when she found out about her son.

“Why are you sitting up here all alone?” somebody asked as she jumped at the voice. She turned and found herself staring into a pair of violet eyes.

“Watching Sango.” Kagome pointed.

“Ah such a beauty. Too bad she doesn’t appreciate my gestures.” Miroku said as he sat next to Kagome, mud free, wet and clean.

“What gestures? I would call that groping.” a gruff voice said as he sat next to Miroku.

“Oh InuYasha thanks for the mud bath. I needed to get rid of your fleas some how.” Miroku said as he grinned.

“What fleas!” InuYasha growled. “Oh hey.” InuYasha said noticing Kagome as Miroku fell backwards attempting to get away from InuYasha.

“Hi.” she replied while watching Sango.

“InuYasha you mutt. That hurt.” Miroku sat up rubbing his head.

“Monk I wasn’t the one who pushed you so you could fall backwards.” InuYasha growled. He crossed his arms and looked down at the cheerleaders. A sadness filled his eyes and he sighed unaware of Kagome and Miroku. Immediately Kagome’s empathy went into overdrive and she wanted to help him.

“Are you okay?” she asked him.

“Yeah.” InuYasha said his gruff façade returning. “What are you staring at wench? Didn’t have enough people to sleep with?” he growled at her. He hated to be stared at.

“Wha?” she managed to choke out before she stood and stormed down the steps.

“Man that was low even for you.” Miroku said as he followed her. InuYasha sniffed and smelt tears. Growling he slammed a fist into the bleachers and bent the seats. He seemed to piss everybody off. And he too realized it was below the belt.
