A slender hand wiped some sweat off a smooth brow. A pair of gentle sapphire eyes raised themselves to the blue sky, a soft light in their blue depths. A pair of full, pink lips drew into a beautiful smile. Higurashi Kagome breathed in and out as the refreshing air of the Sesngoku Jidia energized her. Humming lightly, the miko continued to unplant and gather herbs from her private garden in her village near her small hut.

Her nimble fingers plucking honerysuckle, cat's mint, jasmine and many more remediable herbs and placed them in her bamboo woven basket.

"Kagome-sama!" A village child screamed in delight as she saw the red and white figure in the small garden.

Turning, Kagome smiled and waved at small Akiko. The children gathered outside the crooked wooden fence that the village men had built for their beloved village miko, Kagome.

"Mou, Kagome-sama! Daijibou?" Little Tora asked as his big brown eyes watched the teenage girl deftly gather the plants.

Smiling prettily, the girl nodded. "Hai I am very well this morning, chibi Tora-chan! And how are you all this morning?" She asked lightly as she stood suddenly, lightly patting off the soil that had gathered on her crimson red hakamas.

The children talked all at once, making Kagome giggle. "One at a time onegai! I may not be an elder but I certainly can not listen to more than one small voice all at once." She chastised playfully, smiling brightly.

"Gomen nasai, Kagome-sama!" The children stated politley, their little faces joyful.

Leaning to her left and placing the filled basket underneath her right arm, Kagome looked knowingly at the children. "I know you have not all left your chores and games to ask me how I am this morning. What is the real purpose you have all come from your daly activities to see me?" The miko asked playfully.

The children glanced at one another. Then one little girl stepped forward. She was tiny and very pretty. Her large black eyes and pigtailed black hair graced her small porcelian face. "Kagome-nee-san.." She whispered shyly, her eyes falling to the ground modestly.

Kneeling infront of tiny Oka, she smiled comfortingly at her. "Hai, Oka-chan?" Kagome urged softly.

"We want to learn to be strong like you, Kagome-nee-san. You fight bad youkai and we wish to be able to do so to." The little girl's twin brother, Hojimaru chirped up for his deloquent sister.

Kagome took on a thoughtful look. Glancing at the hopeful looks on the childrens faces, Kagome sighed. "Fine...But only this once will I leave my duties for this! You know I must care for the sick and fight off any dangerous spirits and youkai." The girl reminded the cheeirng group.

Skipping to the practicing grounds, the children sang their village song;

Kagome-nee-san waga hogosha,
Miharu ue no watashitachi.
Dei soshite yabun,
Senpou mamoru minasan.

Kagome laughed as the song the village children had made up of her rang through the village. Men and women drew from their daily tasks and bowed lowly to the passing miko. Smiling and waving to each person, the girl skipped to an open field where katanas and kens lat scattered on the ground and target practice dummies lay resting against trees.

"Shoot Kagome-nee-san! Shoot your arrow and hit your enemy!" The children chanted.

Smiling at them, Kagome drew her bow and notched an arrow. Her face becoming still and serious, Kagome released her finger's from the taught bow string and shaking arrow. The peice of wood and metal sliced through the air and with a loud thunk met it's mark perfectly. The children cheered and sang happily as Kagome repeated this several time's repeadetly, hiting the middle mark each time.

"Now the trick to hiting your mark is too stay compeletly still and do not think of anything but the mark." Kagome advised sternly.

The children nodded as they drew their own imaginary bow's and arrow's and aimed at the illusioned targets. Smiling, Kagome walked behind her pupils."Another important fact is that you msut keep your feet aligned. One infront of another to keep a graceful yet strong stance." She demonstarted to poise once again to the nodding group.

"Kagome-chan!" A feminime voice yelled from behind her a distance away.

The children yelped and turned to the approaching figure and let loose their unexistent arrows at the approaching girl. The children screamed with joy as they imagined their mighty arrow's slicing into their victim's body. Sango raised a black brow in questioning to the giggling Kagome.

"Did I miss something yet again, Kagome-chan?" The Taijya sighed playfully.

Kagome nodded, her blue eyes lighting with excitment. "The children were learning how to handle their bow's and arrow's and you were sadly their first target of the day."

Sango then made a choking noise and fell to the ground, limp and still. The children became silent and frightened as the strong warrioresss lay there looking dead. Kagome then gasped and began to sob as she kneeled by her friend's unmoving body.

"Sango-chan...Sango-chan?!" She wept desperatly, shaking her friend's stiff shoulder in her shaking hands.

"Sango-nee-san! Sango-nee-san!" The children screamed as they then hurried to the miko
.
Kneeling by their friend and mentor, the children shook the unmoving body. Kagome bowed her head and sniffled. "Your arrows...they were just so well aimed and powerful.." The girl wept.

The children gaped at eachother in horror. Had they really murdered Sango-nee-san because they were that powerful? A sudden howl made the children scamper away as Sango leapt from the ground. Seeing the small, startled faces, the two girls began giggling hysterically. The children glared at the devious teenagers. Nodding at one another, the small group attacked the shocked girls and began the largest tickle fight known.

"Kagome-sama! Kagome-sama and Sango-sama!" A man yelled, interupting the giggling mass of flesh.

Drawing from the now frowning children, Sango and Kagome became alert as a village scout ran to them, panting. "Hai, Tsukasko?" Kagome asked hurriedly, her face showing her concern.

"A..me-messenger from the Taijya village addressed t-to you and Sango-sama has arrived, K-Kagome-sama.." He gasped out frantically.

Turning to the somber children, Kagome and Sango waved goodbye and fastly ran to the village. Men and women gathered in a throng as a bandaged man lay on the ground, coughing harshly. The crowd turned to see their protector's and hurriedly parted to let the two females into the man.

Kagome looked down at the bloody and dieing man.

'What has happened to him?' She thought in shock.

Sango frowned as she tightened her grip on her Hirakitsou. The men drowsily opened his eyes and peered into the two faces of the hovering girls. "Ar-Are you Kagome the miko and Sango the Taijya?" He murmured weakly.

Kagome kneeled infront of the man and nodded, her eyes almost black with concern. "Hai, we are them. What has happened to you, messenger? And what ill news do you bring got have risked the deadly youkai of this area to come to us?" She asked softly.

The man coughed, blood appearing on his dirty haori. His brown eyes tiredly gazing up into the angelic face of Kagome, he sgihed. "My name is Yumaru. Your Taijya's village sent me in a hurry. They have recieved an ominous and powerful long ago and has since protected it. It has been of most secrecy. It is known as the Shikon no Tama." He gasped.

Kagome's lips parted in awe and shock. The Shikon no Tama? But that was a simple youkai's tale! Sango frowned at the man. "That can not be so, Yumaru! I am the cheif's daughter and I have not heard of such thing." Sango protested firmly, her chocolate eyes hard.

Yumaru turned to the girl and sighed. "Your Otou-san decided not to discuss such things with you until you were ready to inherit the position as the protector of the Shikon no Tama." He rasped. His eyes then darkened grimly. "But latley youkai have risen and sought the village, costing many raids and lives. Many of your Otou-san's armies are decreasing and his village now has voted to pass the Shikon no Tama to a miko of great purification power to protect the Shikon no Tama."

The dieing messenger then turned to the shocked Kagome. "You. You Kagome-sama have been choosen as the new protector and guardian of the Shikon no Tama. You must hurry, miko. Hurry to the village and the Jewel before it is too late." He whispered. His eyes then dulled, and his body limp.

Kagome placed her hand on the man's unmoving chest and bowed her head and murmured a prayer. Standing up, Kagome frowned. "He is dead." The girl announced softly.

Whispers and murmurs rose from the stunned villagers who surrounded the two girls. Frowning, Kagome turned to the villagers. "Onegai go to your daily tasks. Sango and myself will speak to the village elder about this incident." She stated strongly.

The group then slowly dissapeared. Her shoulders slumping, Kagome gazed into Sango's grim face. "What should we do?" She asked quietly, her serene face calm yet confused.

Sango rose her head up, her shoulder's straightening firmly. "We must go to my village immediatly. The messenger has spoken. My village is in great perail and the Jewel that is rumoured to have such ultimate powers is also in jeopardy. We must talk to Kaede-baba and speak to her of our quick parting to the Taijya stronghold." Sango replied softly.

Kagome nodded. "Hai I agree with you Sango-chan. come let us hurry to Kaede." Kagome then ordered some nearby men to create a burial site for the messenger and grasped the pale faced Sago and lead her to the hut outside the village.
