Chapter one- A Kingdom and a Forest.

Kagome looked over the balcony, relishing the view and the warm breeze through her silky black hair, whipping it around her neck. she looked far to the horizone where she could see the great trees. she looked lower to the small village, her kingdom. from here it didn't look so bad... Her father King Leon a/n: for lack of a better nameruled over as far as the horizon as far as the forest.

This was his castle. A huge well built structure with a beautiful garden. She sighed and breathed in the sweet fragrence of lavander from below. She continued to look of into the distance to the huge golden sun.

Even with all this beauty and peace she longed for the deep dark forest. The whispering trees and babbling brooks. She missed the waiting owl and hunting wolf. She missed the magical silence. The forest was all that protected them from the dark forces of the demons that lived across the sea. The forest guarded her kingdom with such ferosity. Anyone who tired to get through her would disapear and never come out. Even if he did his mind was completly destroyed remembering nothing only the strange spirits that lived to confuse and trap human and demons alike.

She- the forest spirit- only let her people through her ever changing paths. She whispered the ways and never lead them astay. Kagome would go there often just to hear her.

It was if the forest called for her "Kagome..." it whispered.

She could only just see it. The tall oaks climbing to the sky.

All this thought made her restless and she began to change clothes. She couldn't have her dress ruined and her father finding out. The forest was forbiden to her.

As she climbed out the window, on lady made of blankets, she thought this over 'Why did he want to protect her?' but she was like the wind, untameable, wild and strong. She was sure her father wanted to be more like the other girls in the kingdom sweet, obedient, only useful for marriage. Ha! That wasn't going to happen.

She crawled from behind a bush and bolted for the gates. As she was about to pass them she stopped and turned to face her, the stone statue that lay dormaint in the center of the garden.

The woman with long hair and cold eyes stared back at her almost as if she could see her soul. She wore thick armor like a warrior and held a bow and arrow. At her feet was a small two tailed cat demon. It was her... the spirit of the forest. The one who protected her home. She, with the strength to purify evil hearts and the courage to stand up to demons.

She was the forest itself, its heart. Or at least that was the fairy tale. She remembered the day this statue was built...

"Daddy? What is it" She sat on her fathers lap he had a solemn smile, as he held his daughter. They had been close then

"Her name was Midoriko. She is the spirit of the forest its protector, our guardian." he said happily retelling the tale he was told as a boy.

"why?" She had asked her curiosity had started at a young age.

He had laughed and Kagome winced at the thought of how happy he used to be "Why?" he stared into her eyes "Well they say she was once a princess and she was sent to marry a horrible wicked demon..."

Kagome listened intentivly.

"When she got there he attacked her home and tried to kill her people. When she found out she fought him trying to purify his soul. But it seemed to much for her and then her only option was to defend her home" He pointed to a hole in her chest "She pulled out her soul and planted it in the ground. An instant later, as she died the sacred tree sprang up and then thousands of trees continued to grow until it completly surrounded us. The demon couldn't pass through it or above and soon gave up leaving us in peace" he gave a sort of half smile "They say her spirit still guards us. If you look and listen carefully you can see her still"...

Kagome looked at the face of the statue and her heart felt sore.

"You know she looks a lot like you and you mother" He had laughed. a/n: i wanted her and Kagome to look alike just for this story

That's why he never came to the garden. Now that she was dead... He couldn't even look her in the face.

She turned away from the statue damning her from taking her mother away even though she knew it wasn't her fault. Ever since then her father had become.. colder almost dead inside. He rarely came to see her for he left to fight wars, as he believed the forest couldn't protect them, and when he was here he was talking about more wars.

She ran as fast as she could wanting to drive those thoughts away. She just wanted to be in the forest once more.

Passing by many hungry villagers as war had ravaged the land and the king had become neglective. She winced at the thought of how her people where suffering all because of a stupid war with the bastard inu-youkai. she had never seen one but knew their handy work. They slaughtered relentlessly and raped the women then they would kill evone one else. She hated them.

She finnaly made it to the foot of the forest where small trees began to grow. as she looked into the dark depths of the forest she could almost swear they called to her. "Kagome..." she heard the wind whisper.

She was not afraid, she never was. The day her mother died this had become her second home. She had grown up wild when her father wasn't around. Those where the best times. She could almost feel Midoriko in every tree and rock she climbed, helping her over when she slipped. Sometimes she even felt her mother.

She finnally got to the sacred tree. It loomed way over head like a towering blanket blocking the sun. She was about to go over to the huge roots that wrapped around the tree when she noticed something. She smiled and walking cheerfully over to a scrawny tree.

This little tree was very special to her, she had planted it the day her mother had died with the seed she had been given on her death bed.

"Kagome... when i die this seed will sprout with new life... take care of it and know i will always be with you" She had whispered her final words using her last strength.

Her father had been outside, his head hung low to hide his tears. He had asked, begged, pleaded with the spirit to save her from the toxins slowly eating her away but the forest had stayed silent. When she died a peace of him died with her and he stopped caring about anything but fighting.

Kagome had been 5 and now she 16. It had been so long and yet she could remember it as if it had been yesterday. She began to grow tired of her memories of what was and could have been neither could be changed..

She leaned back into one of the roots of the sacred tree letting it wrap around her like a blanket. She closed her eyes and fell asleep...
