chapter sixteen- the dog demon

Silently two lone figures wandered through the forest. Amber eyes searched behind every bush and tree for any sign of life. The demons dog ears twitched at every noise, and he ran his claws through his long silver hair in fustration. His clothes were red and his other hand strayed towards his sword at his side in case of danger.

"I think were in the wrong forest" Laughed the man beside him.

He wore a black and purple monks robe and prayer beads were wrapped around one of his wrists. His black hair was cut short with a tiny pony tail. He was smiling but Inuyasha knew Miroku was just as disappointed as he was.

"This is the right forest" Growled inuyasha "I'm sure of it! They must be here somewhere, they couldn't have vanished into thin air!"

For the past three years the dog demons enemies had disappeared. King Leon and everyone within his town were gone. No one could find the place, and they never came to the battle field. This worried the dog demons not because they cared... it was just principle, there was something strange going on and they had to find out what it was.

Of course that wasn't the only reason Inuyasha and Miroko were in this forest, for they also searched for their long lost friend, though they doubted they would find anything other than her corpse.

Kagome froze fear digging deep into her heart. She hid behind a small leafy bush and was as silent as the tall trees. For the past three years she had remained silent, she cried silent tears for her family and her voice, but she did not say a word.

Before her stood a proud demon. She knew it was a demon because of the dog ears, the claws and the dazeling amber eyes. She was both afraid and transfixed by the figure before her. He looked young, though there is no telling how old a demon is, he was handsome with long silver hair and stong muscles but there was still the fear that naraku had sent him to capture her.

There was another with him, this one was human and he looked like a monk. She wasn't as drawn to him as she was the demon but he was still handsome anyway. Both looked worried and fustrated. Were they truly here to capture her? Or were they just simple hunters looking for game in the forest? What did it matter, either way they were dangerous and to be avoided at all costs.

She knew she should leave, she should hide in her cave and hope they did not find her but she found she could not make herself move. She gazed at the demon with longing as she wished so badly to be among people again, she wanted to speak and to scream and to be safe and unafraid. She found herself wondering what the demon's name was, who he was?

Suddenly he stopped in his tracks and began to sniff the air, Kagome froze knowing instantly her mistake, she had forgotten that dog demons have excelent senses of smell. He knew she was there and now there was no escape, he would be faster, stronger and she didn't want to think about what he would do if he found her.

"What is it?" Asked the man beside him for her was a human and couldn't smell her.

"Someone is nearby" The demon said bluntly comming towards the bush. Kagome's fears were realised and she closed her eyes to stem the tears she knew were about to fall.

She was going to fail, she hadn't even a chance to save her family and now she would die. Then without realising she had even moved, Kagome leapt up from behind the bush, completely surprising the demon and the monk, and started to run towards her cave, hoping they would not follow.

"It's a girl!" Exclaimed the monk.

"Hey wait!" laughed Inuyasha as he gave chase.

It wasn't long before he had grabbed the girl and pulled her against his chest to stop her from struggling.

"It's okay" He growled as she kicked and struggled, "i wont hurt you"

His words were both arrogant and gentle at the same time and Kagome felt her struggling subside.

He is trying to trick you warned the fear in her mind and in her desperation she dug her teeth into the arm that held her.

The demon holwed but did not let go "Bloody wench" He hissed between clentched teeth.

"Let her go Inuyasha" said the monk laughing, "She's wild"

"She might know what happened to the kingdom here" He hissed back not at all amused. The moment he set eyes on the girl her knew he would not let her go, no matter if she didn't know anything. To his surprise, at his words the girl went limp and he could smell the fear and feel her heart beating wildly from where his arms wrapped around her body.

He loosened his grip enough to turn her around to face him. She would not meet his gaze and there were fresh tears streaming dowm her face. There was a pain in Inuyasha's heart as he realised that these tears were wrong. Someone as beautiful as this maiden shouldn't be crying, she should be laughing and smiling, he wanted to make her laugh.

"Are you okay?" He asked in the gentlest voice he could master. She gave no reply and continued to stare down at the ground. After a few more attempts to get her to talk Inuyasha's patience was wearing thin "Why don't you say something? Are you mute?"

She looked up at him then, despair and pain in her eyes. He realised she was mute, she could not speak, or at least would not and felt a little guilty.

"Why didn't you say so?" he growled to hide his emotions and her brows creased at the cruel joke.

Inuyasha couldn't help but laugh arrogantly, so did the monk, Miroku. Kagome didn't think it was funny and with all her might she brought her knee up into her captors groin and was running down the forest trail as the demon growled in fury and pain. She couldn't help the smile on her face.

She ran all the way to her cave, completly forgetting that a demon could track and that he would follow her to the ends of the earth for revenge after that insult.

She curled into the corner of her cave arms wrapped around her knees. She tried to make herself as small as possible and silently prayed that Kilala and Midoriko would come to her rescue, there was no reply.

In a few minutes the demon was there, his eyes were like two golden suns and he was furious.

"Where are you wench?" He snarled and entered the cave. He saw her pityful starved body hiding in the corner and once again his heart hurt. Why was he drawn to her?

Then just as he was about to reach out to her he spotted something beside her, something he recognised and instantly made him forget the girl and everything else. It was a demon exterminators mask.

He picked it up as if it was so frail it would break in his clawed hands and asked with a shaking voice "Where did you get this?"
