Rin tapped her pencil on her desk waiting for class to be over. She usually loved English but she was just itching to end the day and go to the gym like usual. She sighed wanting to lay her head on cold hard desk. Maybe if I sleep through the class it will go by faster. She looked up to Mr. Parks then adjusted her glasses. He wouldn't mind, I'm his favorite student. Then a light tap on the back of her head brought her out of her thoughts. She rubbed the spot discovering a spitball. She cringed at the feel of someone else's saliva and threw it to the floor.
Looking behind her she noticed Kagura Mishimoto laughing at her. What a bitch, I ought to knock her fuckin teeth out her mouth. Rin scowled at the girl and turned back around. As if I wasn't havin' a bad enough day already. She began scribbling on her paper trying to douse her anger. If only she was back in her old school in Chicago. There no one dared to mess with her. She ran with a group of thugs and gang bangers. Not that she was a gang member herself, but they were a hip-hop dance crew. She was a sister to all of them despite her Japanese heritage.
But her father had landed a great job with an L.A. firm and they moved into a preppy rich neighborhood. But it was L.A. after all; she had no problem finding another crew to dance with. It was her secret passion that no one at the school knew about, not even her friends. But she often missed the slang, the clothing, just the street feel of the hood. She grew up in the projects of Chicago and it was in her heart and soul. But once they moved her parents made it clear that she had to “conduct herself properly” and she hated it.
But there were a few things she did like about the school. The education system was great, even though she was somewhat of a street girl in Chicago. She always made A's and helped her friends pass their classes. She also had a thing for a platinum haired guy named Sesshoumaru Taisho. Even though he had a snotty attitude like he was too good for anyone, and he was from an insanely rich family, he was extremely good looking. And he didn't make a point to pick on her like many of the others. So that's what made it worth going to school everyday. But what made it worth living there was the gym. She thought back to the day she found it.
Flashback
She had just been cruising the town in her beat up old Ford her father bought her a year ago. She looked around at the convenient stores and cheap shops in Compton. Sporting a simple white wife beater, low cut jeans, and tennis shoes, she wore her hair in a low pony tail with her hat pushed slightly to the side. She parked and got out her car when she spotted a building with a sign that read “Moc's” on it. She was interested and decided to go in.
When she first approached it she thought it was a clothing store or something, but once inside she found herself amazed.
“What chu want gurl?” A lean black girl with her braids tied back asked her
“Is this a dance gym?”
“Yeah.” The girl rolled her eyes and swished her head
“Is there a crew here?”
“Yeah, why chinky?”
At that comment Rin got right in her face, “First of all, I ain't no mothafuckin chink, I'm Japanese. Secondly, I was lookin for a crew to join.” Rin swerved her neck
“Oh! So you come in here snappin yo neck tryin be ghetto.”
“Sweety I'm from Chicago, I ain't tryin ta be nothin'.”
“Umm hmm. Well you keep talkin' yo shit and ya gonna get fucked up.”
“Yo yo, what the hell is goin' on here?” A tall black guy wearing jeans and a black wife beater walked up to them
“Moc you betta get dis bitch befo she tore up.”
“Excuse me?!” Rin tilted her head ready to fight
“Hey! We don't need none of dat shit in here. Yo what chu want?”
“I want get down wich ya crew.”
Moc laughed and rubbed his chin, “Can you dance?”
“Hell yeah I can tear up da flo.”
“Then do it.”
Moc walked her over to some mats and ushered his crew off.
“Aight, my boy Reach here is gonna play some music, I want chu to freestyle for us.”
Rin nodded and got in place looking at the mirror in front of her. The music from Ciara's Goodies came on and she quickly began dancing. Gyrating, pop locking, and some break dancing while she heard the impressed comments from the crew. When the song finished she stopped and looked at Moc. He nodded his head and looked to the others. They smiled and nodded as well, and then he finally looked at the girl with braids. She looked at Rin and smiled.
“That was good, I'm Shakia so what's yo name?”
“Rin Takahashi.”
The rest of the crew started laughing.
“So you from Japan?” The girl asked
“No, but my parents are.”
“You speak Japanese?” Moc asked
“Yeah.”
“Hmm, well, you wanna be down?” Moc smiled
“No doubt.”
Moc clapped his hands together, “Aight, why don't you meet da crew.”
Present
Rin almost smiled at the memory. She had been with the crew for about seven months now and they've won almost all their battles. She remembered watching You Got Served with them. They laughed at the lame plot but the dancing was amazing and they made a point to learn some of the moves and incorporate them into their routines. But now she was just aching to get on the floor tonight, they were going to a party/battle and she was more than ready.
Finally the bell rung and she almost jumped out of her desk. She quickly made her way to her locker. She also couldn't wait to get out her school uniform, not only was it plain, it itchy. She scratched her leg just under the skirt and threw her books into the locker. As she turned she saw Sesshoumaru on the other side of the hall talking to a red head with pig tails that she knew as Ayame. Ayame wasn't exactly her friend, but she was a lot nicer than some of other students.
Rin turned and went out to the student parking lot. She approached her Ford and noticed toilet paper all over it. She sighed, knowing that it was Kagura and her stuck up group of friends that did it. Kagura was actually from Japan, she moved to America with her parents when they decided to expand their company over seas. Rin got in the car and started her windshield wipers. Once the toilet paper was gone she heard a voice.
“Nice car Rin.” Kagura laughed
Rin looked over to her with a fake smile, “I like the finish you put on it.” Then she stuck out her tongue and pulled down the skin underneath her eye. She started up the car and pulled out of the parking lot thinking about her first encounter with the bitch.
Flashback
Rin had just arrived at her new school in uniform. She felt weird, being so used to her street clothes and attitude. She made a mental note not to “act ghetto” and just try to get along with people. She went to her first class, Economics. She sat in the middle wishing she was back in Chicago with familiar faces. Remembering how they would sit around listening to people rap while someone beat on the desk with pens. That's when someone tapped her on the shoulder.
“Konnichi wa.” Kagura smiled
“Konnichi wa, ogenki desu ka?”
“Genki desu, anata wa?”
“Genki.”
“Now do you speak English?”
“Yes I do.” Rin smiled
“I'm Kagura Mishimoto.”
“Namea wa Takahasi Rin desu.”
“Kirei desu ne!”
“Arigatou.”
Kagura took a seat next to her, “Okuni wa dochira desu ka?”
“Chicago desu.”
“Amerikajin?!”
“Hai.”
Watashi wa dochira Tokyo desu.”
“Ah.”
“Well let's switch to English shall we?”
“You speak it very well.”
“My father made sure of that, he wants me to take over the company some day.”
“That sounds like a lot of work.”
“It will be, but it's not any time soon thank God.”
Rin smiled, “Well my Dad just landed a job with Baker's Law Firm.”
“My Dad has ties with them.”
“Honto no?!”
“Hai.”
Rin looked at her schedule, “Could you show me where my classes are?”
“Of course.”
“Hey, how did you know I was Japanese?”
“Can't you tell that I'm Japanese?”
“Well…yeah…kind of.”
“That because you were born in America. Here they think we're all Chinese, yuck.”
“I know, are we the only Japanese students here?”
“No, you see that guy over there with silver hair, kind of messy.”
Rin looked to were Kagura had pointed. The young man was arguing with another student about answers on yesterday's test.
“Yeah.”
“That's Inuyasha Taisho, he's from Japan and so is his brother the darling Sesshoumaru, but he's a senior. Only one grade ahead, but he seems like a college guy to me.”
“Oh.” That was all Rin could think of saying.
“Inuyasha's girlfriend is Japanese but she was born in America like you, her name is Kagome Higurashi.”
“Is that her next to him?”
“Yeah, but don't associate with them or the other two, Miroku and Sango, oh yeah, they're Japanese too.”
“Why can't I talk to them?”
“Why? Their nerds, the bottom of the social food chain.”
“And Sesshoumaru…”
“You can talk to him, but don't flirt, he's mine.”
Rin nodded now more interested in this Sesshoumaru guy.
“But don't worry as long as you're with me, you'll be on the top.”
Rin nodded once more.
“So what firm did your Dad used to work with?” Kagura sat down
“A little firm called Lexington.”
“Never heard of them they must really be little.”
“Oh yeah!”
“What's it like in Chicago?”
“It's…it's in need of improvement.” Rin didn't want to say it was in poverty
“Oh…so you were poor.” Kagura gave a wicked smile, “And you own that piece of shit in the parking lot.”
Fire began to light in Rin's eyes, “Well it runs.”
“Yeah I bet, you do know what Ford stands for right?”
“No.” Rin rolled her eyes already tired of Kagura
“Fucker Only Runs Downhill.” Kagura laughed, “I have a Lexus.”
“Isn't that nice.” Rin looked away
“Don't be jealous Rin.” Kagura frowned
“Trust me, I'm not.”
“And here I was thinking you were high society, you're just a poor little girl wishing she could be rich. I bet your family can barely afford your house, making payments are we?” Kagura laughed
Rin was about to make a snide remark when the teacher came in and announced the class was about to start.
Kagura looked to Rin and stood, “I'm sorry, but I don't sit by trash.” She walked away and three girls followed her to the left side of the room.
Rin balled up her fist and then sighed, Ok Rin, don't let her get to you. But if this was Chicago I would've beat her ass and stole her shit! But she wasn't in Chicago anymore and she knew things were done differently here.
“Kagura's a bitch huh?”
Rin looked up into the sweet brown eyes of Kagome. “Definitely.”
“Why don't you come and sit with us, we are anti-Kagura.”
Rin smiled and nodded taking a seat in front of Kagome. She looked at Kagura and saw her pointing and laughing, she glared wanting to give her the finger but resisted the urge.
“So where are you from and would you like to bare my children?” A sweet male voice asked
Rin looked at Miroku with her eyebrow arched.
“Don't pay him any attention, he says that to every girl.” Sango shook her head
“No, just to the pretty ones.” Miroku chuckled
Rin smiled not knowing what else to do.
“So where are you from?” Inuyasha asked scratching his head
“Chicago.”
Present
Rin finally arrived home and quickly went up stairs to take a shower. The spitball in her hair just made her feel filthy. She wanted to beat the hell out of Kagura for tee-peeing her car. I know what Ford really means for her, Found On Road Dead. Rin smiled wickedly, she hated that girl more than anyone she'd ever hated before. She quickly discarded her clothes and got in the shower.
She began singing and washing her hair. “It's just those rainy days; spend a lifetime tryin to wash away. Until the sun comes out and shines again, smile for me, smile for me.”
She finished her shower and began to dress listening to Lose Control by Missy Elliot to pump her up. She needed all the hype she could get for tonight. She walked over to her closet bobbing her head and sing along with the chorus. She pulled out a black shirt that dipped low and hooked on to the left arm just below her shoulder. She then put on some knee pads under her loose fit jeans with a belt that said Bitch on the buckle and slid on her tennis shoes. Feeling in the mood she grabbed her denim jacket and turned off her stereo. She was ready.
D's Club
Game Over by Lil' Flip played as Rin and Shakia turned, back flipped, and slid dropping to their knees doing a 360 then jumping back up as Moc and Reach came in. Their routine pushed the other crew back as they invaded their dancing space. The song ended and the other crew knowing they were defeated left the ring. D walked into the ring and handed them the thousand dollars they won and proclaimed them the victors.
Soon Rin found herself leaning against the bar with a drink in her hand.
“I like dat nice lil' touch you put on at da end.” Break smiled
Break was a medium built Latino dude who did most of more daring break dancing in the group, that's why his name was Break.
“It ain't no thang.” Rin shrugged
“Ah, so you think you big and bad and shit huh?” Moc smirked
“Don't hate cuz I got skills nigga.” Rin laughed
“Yo since when did she get to use dat word?” Tyrone arched an eyebrow
Tyrone was Moc's little brother who was good at freestyle solo's that were funny and original.
“Nigga, nigga, nigga.” Rin laughed, “It's a colorful word, use it, improve yo vocab.” She smiled
“Nah homes, I'm about to improve my game. You see shorty over dere checkin me out right?” Break smiled motioned behind her
Rin turned her head to see a pretty Latina girl with long dark hair in skimpy clothes looking their way. “Oh, da hoes have come out play.” Rin took a sip of her drink
“And play I shall.” Break walked away
“Dat nigga's gonna end up wit some shit he can't get rid of.” Moc shook his head
“Yeah, like a baby's mama.” Shakia said making Rin laugh, “So what's up, why ain't chu got a man?.”
Rin inhaled and sighed, “I don't know. I guess there just ain't any good ones out there.”
“Gurl! The only thing he needs to be good at is…” She started humping the air
Rin laughed, “Yeah right, I don't need no drama. All dat shit brings is problems, I'm tellin' you.”
“I know, but sometimes da dick be worth it.”
“There ain't no dick dat good, and if there is, that nigga need be shot, shit!” Rin finished her drink
“Yo let's get on da flo.” Moc shook his head, “The only dick I need hear bout is mine, and how it's gettin' sucked tonight.”
Shakia smacked him in the back of the head, “You nasty mothafucka.”
“Oh don't act like you don't do it. I see how you be bobbin' and weavin'.” Moc laughed impersonating her dancing
“Nigga shut up.”
They spent the next few hours drinking and dancing, by the time Rin had to go home she wasn't sure if she could drive. Moc had gone home with some girl he met. Break went with the Latina girl that had been staring at him. Shakia was dead drunk and Tyrone took her home early, and the rest of the crew was either gone or drunk.
Rin walked outside looking at her car keys, then her car. She knew better than to drive under the influence, but she was in a bad part of L.A., so walking or taking the bus was out of the question. She sighed not knowing what to do. She thought about using her cell phone, but couldn't imagine calling her parents and telling them that she was intoxicated and needed a ride home. And there was no way in hell that she would call any of her friends at school. She sighed once more and spotted a coffee shop down the street. Exactly what I need, I don't think anyone would try jumpin' me on dis busy ass street. She zipped up her denim jacket that fell just above her thigh and walked to the coffee shop.
Once she was inside she ordered a cup of coffee and a muffin. The waitress was a short plump black woman in her mid forties with curly hair tied up in a bun. She nodded and said she'd be right back. I shouldn't have drunk on a empty stomach. The waitress brought her the muffin and her cup of coffee.
“Thanks.”
“Aren't you a little too young to be drinking?”
“Yeah.” Rin sighed
“Well at least you didn't just get in the car drive off; I wish my son was that smart.”
“Thanks ma'am.”
The waitress nodded and walked away
Rin poured a little sugar in her coffee and began stirring it looking out the window at practically nothing. Someone tapped her on the shoulder and she looked up. Her eyes became wide, and for a moment she started to wonder just how much she might have drank.
“Don't I go to school with you?” Sesshoumaru said in an even tone
“Yeah.” Rin's brow wrinkled, “What are you doing out here?”
“I could ask you the same thing.”
“I'm visiting a friend.”
“Jack Daniels maybe?” Sesshoumaru sat down across from her
“My friend is having hard times.”
“I bet.” Sesshoumaru looked out the window
“But what are you doing out here?”
“I just got back from San Francisco but I made a wrong turn.”
“Tired?”
Sesshoumaru just looked at her
“Want some coffee?”
Sesshoumaru nodded and called over the waitress
“Can I get you something?”
“Yes, a cup of coffee.”
“You can't say please?”
Sesshoumaru looked up with annoyance in his brilliant gold eyes.
“Sorry, he's had a really hard night.” Rin shrugged
“Mm hmm.” Waitress walked away
“You better hope she doesn't spit in your coffee.” Rin frowned
Sesshoumaru cocked his eyebrow as if saying, `I wish she would dare try it.'
“Do you need directions out of here?” Rin asked taking a sip of her coffee
“No.”
Rin looked outside and noticed Sesshoumaru's Mercedes' Benz, “You really shouldn't drive that here.”
Sesshoumaru sighed, “Well it's not like I planned to come through here.” His tone was snobbish and Rin started to dislike him. No wonder Kagura likes him so damn much, they're two of kind. Rin tried to finish her coffee so she could leave.
“Why do you let them do that to you?”
Rin frowned while she downed the coffee, “Do what?”
“Treat you like shit.”
Rin shrugged, “Its high school, you go for four years and then you graduate and go to college. Chances are you won't see them ever again in your lifetime.”
Sesshoumaru looked over to her, “They would respect you more if you stood up to them.”
“I do…in a way.”
“Yeah, I guess protesting while they spill soda all over you is a way of sticking up for yourself.”
Rin's eyes narrowed, “I'm not the type to get into fights.” But the truth was that back in Chicago she got into fights all the time. It was never in school, but still she was known for laying out a few people. “When worst comes to worst I can handle myself.”
“So you scratch?”
Rin had finally had enough and stood up, “I have to go home.”
“You shouldn't drive while you're drunk.”
“I'm not drunk.”
“Just tipsy.”
She started walking past him when he grabbed her wrists, “I'll take you home.”
Rin made a sound some what like a laugh, “Do you think I'm about to leave my car here? Plus I wouldn't drive around here in your car anyway. As soon as you stop at a light someone's got a gun in your face.”
“Well I can handle myself.”
“So you're bullet proof.”
Sesshoumaru smirked, “My windows are.”
Rin arched her eyebrows, “Alright, but what about my car.”
“Who would want that piece of shit?” Sesshoumaru threw a fifty on the table.
Rin looked at the dollar bill then at him. “Fuck it, I'll drive myself home.”
Sesshoumaru frowned, surprised at her response and walked after her as she left the shop.
“Rin.”
“What?”
“It's not safe.”
“And why do you care what happens to me?”
Sesshoumaru tilted his head, “Kagura would love it if you got robbed or something. Sure go ahead; give her something else to bother me about.”
And it was true, everything that she did, including torturing Rin, she ran and told Sesshoumaru about it.
“I thought she was your girlfriend.”
“She wishes she was.”
“Aren't you her friend?”
“She wishes for that too.”
Rin shook her head, “Fine, there's nothing valuable in there anyway.” Rin tucked her hands in her pockets and got in the car with Sesshoumaru.
Surprisingly they made it to their neighborhood safe and sound. And sound as in, they didn't say a word to one another. Rin looked at her house; it was a four bedrooms, five bathrooms, and two-story with garage, swimming pool, and pool house. She didn't miss the little apartment they lived in back in Chicago, but missed just about everything else. Then something occurred to Rin.
“How did you know where I lived?”
Sesshoumaru looked over to here, “I was there when Kagura threw eggs at your door.”
“Did you have a hand in it?” Rin frowned
“I'm above such childish actions.”
Rin looked at him; his eyes were beyond the steering wheel. Kagura was wrong, he isn't like a college student, he's a fuckin business man with a stick up his ass.
“You think a lot of things are below you don't you?”
Sesshoumaru turned toward her, “Like you?”
Rin sneered, “Fuck you.” She jumped out of the car and slammed the door stomping toward her front porch. She heard Sesshoumaru take off as she fished out her keys from her jacket pocket.
Once inside she quietly crept to her room and looked at the clock beside her bed. It read four a.m., good thing her parents were deep sleepers or she would have a lot to explain. She sighed and removed her clothes and once more got into the shower. But this time she wasn't singing. She was pondering on Sesshoumaru, she had thought he was an ok guy but now she realized he was just as much of a rich stuck up asshole as the rest of them. She fumed with idea of what would happen once she got back to school. But it seemed like Sesshoumaru wasn't the type to gossip, she wasn't sure if he even cared.
Once out of the shower she slipped into an oversized t-shirt and some boxers. Sitting on the bed with the TV on, she laid back. But why did he even come and talk to me. His lame ass excuse for taking me home was complete bullshit. Rin got underneath her blanket and rolled over to her side. Damn I'm tired.
A/N: I hope you guys liked this chapter I tried to bring the slang to life as much as possible and there's more to come. But first of all, sorry if I offended anyone, just to let you know, I am an African American so…you know. Also, a little info, I found out that Japanese people hate to be mistaken for Chinese; it supposed to be really offensive. And I apologize for the way that I ended Open Eyes, that is for anyone who's read it. I plan to write an alternate ending to make up for it. I had the worst writer's block and felt like I needed to end it, but it sucked. But this feels like it has potential so please R&R.
