He stared at her, the shadows hiding her face. It was deathly quiet in the well house, and for the first time since he met her, 2 years ago, he couldn't guess at what she was feeling or thinking.
Needing to break the silence, he opened his mouth at the same moment she raised her head. The look in her eyes broke his heart, what she did next shattered it to pieces.
This is my December
This is my time of the year
This is my December
This is all so clear
This is my time of the year
This is my December
This is all so clear
Calmly, she grasped his hand and lifting the completed Shikon Jewel, that had so recently been returned, from around her neck, firmly placed it in his palm. Then, with steady hands and a placid face that belied the feelings inside, she slowly and carefully lifted his prayer beads over his head, lightly brushing the tips of his ears as she went. She placed the beads with the Jewel, and firmly closed his fingers around them, effectively capturing them in a tight hold. The caress she gave him as she lifted her hands made his bleeding heart cry out once more.
She stepped away and looked him in the eye again. “Go home, Inuyasha. Go home.” came her soft sweet voice. Without waiting for an answer, she turned on her heel and slowly, each step costing her more than she would have thought, walked back to her house and firmly shut the door.
This is my December
This is my snow covered home
This is my December
This is me alone
This is my snow covered home
This is my December
This is me alone
He stared after her, rooted to the spot, the beads and Jewel heavy in his hand. She…she just gave me the Jewel…and my beads. She had given him his freedom and the thing that he had spent the last fifty three years longing for. He should be happy, elated even, he should be laughing and dancing from the roof tops, but he wasn't. Instead he was frozen to the spot, watching as the shattered pieces of his heart still slowly fell to the ground.
And I
Just wish that I didn't feel like there was something I missed
And I
Take back all The things I said to make you feel like that
Just wish that I didn't feel like there was something I missed
And I
Take back all The things I said to make you feel like that
And I
Just wish that I didn't feel like there was something I missed
And I
Take back all the things I said to you
Just wish that I didn't feel like there was something I missed
And I
Take back all the things I said to you
How did it come to this? How could we have come so far to end like this? What went wrong?! She said she…I know she does! So why this? What the hell happened?! I didn't even get a chance to give it to her… his poor tortured mind whined. He clenched his hand around the beads and jewel until one of the teeth cut into his hand, making him aware of want he was doing. Tipping his head back, he tried to think of what could have happened to make Kagome act like this. Closing his eyes, he replayed all the events that had led to this moment.
The Jewel was complete! Two days ago, they had fought and defeated Naraku in a battle that seemed to rip the world apart. The ground was a disaster. Trees uprooted, boulders and half the mountain blown away, the once bright spring green grass now saturated with blood and black sludge, and then there was the crack. It was if some god from above had reached down and dragged his claw across the meadow. It was the result of Inuyasha's kaze no kizu blast, infused with both Kaogme's arrow and Seshoumaru's tokijin fire. It was the killing strike that had laid waste to Naraku.
The casualties weren't as bad as they would have thought. Miroku's wind tunnel arm was broken from when Naraku had smashed it in order to save himself from being sucked in. Sango had a concussion, a bruised belly and a twisted ankle thanks to having her boomerang deflected by her brother and sent back at her. Inuyasha and Seshoumaru both had multiple lacerations and bruises on them, but being demons, they were brushed off as noting. Kagome probably fared the worst: she had second degree burns on both arms from when she had reached into Naraku to get the Shikon Jewel, and a heavy bruise (that had almost killed her) around the neck from where Naraku hat tried to stop her. All in all, they could say that is was a very good battle.
They had returned to the village to celebrate, with Seshoumaru taking Rin and Jaken back to the Western lands. It was a wonderful celebration lasting the entire day and well into the night. Everyone, save two, was in high spirits. Kagome and Inuyasha while happy and relieved that the ordeal with Naraku was over, knew that the real battle had yet to come. If anyone noticed the lack of a cretin dead miko hanging around for the last few days, they didn't say anything.
It was during the mini firework display that Kagome had brought over when Inuyasha suddenly came to attention. He stared at his forest before glancing quickly around him to make sure no one would notice his disappearance. What he didn't see, however, was that Kagome had been watching him all night waiting for this moment, and when he checked her, she purposely looked away, pretending to be involved in whatever Shippo was chattering about. Assured what everyone was preoccupied, Inuyasha had swiftly and silently disappeared into the forest, following the sent of death, grave soil, and soul collectors.
The talk in the forest had gone better than he had expected. There were of course the predictable little snags along the way, but in the end, it turned out just as he wanted. He had come racing back to the village, his prize safely tucked in his shirt with the full intentions of presenting it to Kagome. It was the best act he could think of to show her and everyone else the full extent of his feelings towards her. But as he went, he caught the trail of her sent heading to the well. Changing his direction and wondering what she could be doing now, he plunged full force into the well and only had a brief moment to wonder at the sent of salt before be was surrounded by the soft blue light and the tug of magic leading him to the future. He had landed on the other side and had immediately been bombarded by the sent of her tears. Fearing something had happened to her, he had leapt out of the well only to come face to face with Kagome. Her face had been void of all feeling and tears, but he could sense that she had just recently stopped crying…
And then, he was here. Standing alone with his beads, the jewel, and the precious gift he needed to give her.
And I give it all away
Just to have somewhere to go to
Give it all away
To have someone to come home to
Just to have somewhere to go to
Give it all away
To have someone to come home to
