Demires: The Love Of An Enemy

Two: Inuyasha

The room is dark to a human, but to me, it's as light as a room can get.

I can almost smell her fear; but yet I have to wonder why she's so afraid. I told her I wasn't going to hurt her, so why doesn't she believe me?

Because my race killed her family. Had I known her family was in danger, I would have notified them; made sure they didn't get hurt.

So again, why doesn't she believe me?

Because I'm not human. Because I'm not like her. I can't help it that I need to kill to survive. How was I supposed to stop the vampire that bit me in my sleep?

I didn't notice what he had done to me until long after he had gone.

The transformation was a lot easier for me than most, me being only half human; so I only had to encounter half of the effects. I died faster than most humans do, and most of the things I had to go through went twice as fast. It was convenient; not that I actually wanted to turn into a "demire," or whatever the hell Kagome calls us.

I lead her down the main hallway of my so-called "home," and open the door to a room in which she can actually see in. There is a small light in the corner, giving off a hazy glow. I gaze over to the bed in which my closest friend before I turned lay in. He looks pale, clammy, and weak, and I hope to Kami that Kagome can help him.

"And this is supposed to mean...?" she asks, a clueless look to her.

"Can you help him?"

"Why would you want me to help him? He's human," Kagome says. It amazes me that she can tell who is human and who is not by just looking at them.

"Look, he was a friend, okay? I don't want him to go around killing people. He's been bitten."

"Oh, so it's okay for everyone you didn't know personally to kill?" Her words pain me.

"No, that's not what I meant. I - I...just, whatever! Can you help him?" I beg, a pleading look in my eyes.

She sighs heavily, most likely irritated at herself for not being able to say no. I mean, she's helping a human; not a demire.

"Hai, I will try to help," she says softly, as if still debating whether or not to help.

"Good," I say. "How can we stop it?"

"Well," she says, "we can't actually stop the transformation completely, but we can slow down the process and make it less effective, so he'll only need to feed or kill once a month at most. Hell, he might not even need to actually kill at all; just feed. Even though whoever he feeds on will still become a demire, whoever he bites won't have to suffer as much through the transformation." I feel stupid listening to her talk about my kind so well. She most likely knows more about demires than I do.

"Okay...so I have the facts. Now how do we do it?"

"Well, what's the one thing your most weak to?" she asks, a skeptical look in her eyes.

"We're not really weak to anything. You just kill us like normal humans," I explain.

"That's where you're wrong," she states matter-of-factly.

I have a confused look on my face, and she takes that as a signal to continue.

"I've been running some tests. I got a hold of some demire blood - and no, I'm not telling you how - and tested a few things. The demon blood in you; it makes you allergic to pure silver. The vampire blood in you? It makes you somewhat allergic to garlic. The perfect mixture of both should slow the process. It'll hurt like hell, but it'll make things better."

I'm completely surprised. She runs tests? No wonder she knows more about my kind than I do. "Are you sure?" I ask.

"Almost positive."

"Almost? That's not good enough!" I nearly yell.

She brings a finger to my lips. "Shut up," she says all-too calmly. "There's not a better way to do it!"

I nod, figuring she knows best. "Okay, I guess," I mumble under my breath. I hate being wrong.

"All right. I'm going to run home to get the things I need. You will have to start a fire in the fireplace over there, and make it as hot as you can get it. I have some nearly-melted silver, but it will still take about a day to melt it all, and -"

"A day?!" I interrupt.

"Yes, a day. Now would you shut up?" she snaps, glaring at me. I nod. "Good. Now, I'm also going to get some garlic. I'll mix that with cold water, and then - wait, I'll just explain it all when I get back. It should be about twenty minutes. Now get started on that fire," she finishes, and then walks out the door.

I look over at my friend, still pale and weak, unable to talk. He probably didn't hear what all went on, nor understand. The demires keep their whole culture a secret; Kagome's the only one who knows about us, thanks to me. And the stupid-ass vamp that bit me.

I huff and walk to the fireplace, deciding I better get a quick start.
