Chapter Sixteen: Where we belong
Kagome smiled. She loved watching the children taking their naps. Sprawled around the playroom floor on their little red and blue mats, they were the picture of innocence. Looking at them now, she almost forgot what little hellions they were when they were awake. Almost.
Her gaze traveled from mat to mat; child to child. Emily lay on her stomach, arms curled under her chest and legs crossed at the ankles, she looked so peaceful. Jack, Eric, and Jimmy lay in a circle around a soccer ball. Kagome grinned. It had become a game of theirs, starting a couple weeks before. Whichever one of them woke first and grabbed the ball, was ‘Prince’ of snack time, and got to help her pass out juice boxes and cookies. Kagome’s grin widened when her eyes touched on the little couple. Mats placed touching side by side, Tony and Mya slept soundly next to each other. Since the day Inuyasha had set Tony straight, he and Mya had become inseparable. Aw, puppy love.
Are you jealous of a couple of fifth graders Kagome?
What? I…no…of course n-…Maybe.
That’s sad Kagome.
No. What’s sad is the fact that I had a really good man, who wanted me and I went and fucked it all up.
Don’t worry girly, you’ll fix it.
But what if I can’t? What if it’s too late?
Just have a little faith. You’ll never know if you don’t at least try, now will you?
Kagome winced. It was true. She wouldn’t really know unless she tried her hardest. She didn’t want to end up as ‘Old Lady Kagome’ down the street with the fifty cats who always smelled like kitty litter, dreaming about the silver haired hanyou who got away. She wanted to be with the silver haired hanyou.
Kagome sighed and ran her fingers through her hair. She’d handled things so badly. All she wanted was a chance to make things right.

“Inuyasha, if you don’t stop pacing, I’m going to tie you to a chair.”
Inuyasha growled at his brother, but reluctantly flopped down on the sofa. He glared at the clock on the wall, his claws scratching thin rip lines in the upholstery.
“Kagome should be home in a couple hours. I don’t think I can wait that long though. Thinkin’ maybe I’ll just drive up there.”
“That, I’m sure, would be a mistake.” Inuyasha raised an eyebrow.
“How do you figure?”
“Really Inuyasha. Do you want your personal life laid out for a bunch of grade school children to gawk at? Besides, I’m sure the ningen would be more comfortable in her own home when you spill your guts.”
“You’re such a great help when it comes to my love life Sesshoumaru.”
“I try.” Inuyasha stood up and stretched his arms, smirking.
“Feh. So do I.”
“What does that mean?” Inuyasha looked at the clock on the wall once more.
“Oh you’ll find out here in about five minutes or so.” Sesshoumaru stood and stalked towards his brother.
“Inuyasha what are you….” The shrill ring of Sesshoumaru’s cell phone cut him off. Inuyasha jumped and started backing towards his room.
“Oi! The wench is early.” Sesshoumaru cast his brother a curious stare as he brought the cell up to his ear.
“Taisho here.” There was a brief pause before a familiar feminine voice came over the line.
“Taisho? Wait. Sesshoumaru Taisho?”
“Miss Saito?” Sesshoumaru turned around to growl at his brother, but he’d already disappeared into his room.
“Um, yeah! Wow. You know, I really didn’t expect you of all people to leave me your number.”
“I…Did….What?” Baka Inuyasha.
“Your number. You….or someone…wrote this number on the back of you bill this afternoon. I assumed it was Miroku leaving me a new cell number or something….But I was obviously wrong.”
“Well this is certainly a….surprise.”
“Mmhmm. Nice surprise though.” Sesshoumaru raised an eyebrow.
“Really.”
“Hmm. Sure. I mean, it’s not everyday a girl gets slipped a handsome man’s phone number, is it?” Sesshoumaru actually chuckled softly under his breath. Interesting.
“There isn’t a subtle bone in your body, is there Miss Saito?” A soft laughter wafted over the phone line, making Sesshoumaru go still for a moment.
“You can call me Rin, and I think subtlety is a waste of time. I mean, if you have something to say, what’s the point in holding back?”
“I suppose I can see the logic in that.”
“Which one? Calling me Rin, or that subtlety is a waste of time?”
“Both, I think.” There was another pause before he heard her voice again, though her words seemed a bit rushed.
“You know….You don’t really strike me as the kind of guy who would slip a woman he barely knows his phone number.”
“Well-”
“So it’s safe to assume that you weren’t expecting me to call you.”
“Well I-”
“So it’s also safe to assume that you wouldn’t be interested in having dinner with me Friday night.”
“I w-”
“That’s okay. Can’t blame a girl for tryin’ can you?” Her voice was so low that Sesshoumaru wouldn’t have been able to hear it had it not been for his demon ears.
“Rin, are you gong to let me finish a sentence anytime soon?” His tone was harsher than he’d intended, and he winced.
“….Um…Okay.” Deliberately lowering his voice, Sesshoumaru spoke softly over the line.
“Thank you. I would enjoy having dinner with you Friday night.”
“Oh.” Sesshoumaru scowled at the phone.
“Oh?”
“Mmhmm. Now, I’m feeding you, so be at the café around seven?”
“Seven sounds fine. I’ll be there.”
“Great.”
“Great.” A soft click and the phone went dead on the other line. He snapped his cell closed and stuffed it in his jeans pocket.
Sesshoumaru walked into Inuyasha’s room and crossed his arms, glowering down at the hanyou stretched out on his bed. Inuyasha cracked an eye open and smirked.
“Does the tight ass have a date?”
Sesshoumaru kicked the bed, making it skid across the floor. He strode out of the room, slamming the door behind him. Inuyasha’s riotous laughter followed him through the apartment.
You have a date with Rin.
I know this.
Just making sure.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~
Inuyasha scrambled out of his room and nearly ran towards the apartment door.
“Kagome’s home.”
Sesshoumaru looked up from his book and sniffed the air.
“I don’t smell her.”
“You don’t know her smell like I do. And it’s a damn good thing you don’t because then I’d have to kill you. She’s home alright.”
“Well then what are you still doing here?”
“Now that, is a damn good question.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mmm. Home.
Kagome kicked off her shoes and threw her purse on the couch. She walked into the kitchen and dug a soda from the refrigerator. Rolling her shoulders, she popped the top and walked back into the living room. She eyed the answering machine guiltily and took a swig of the soda. Walking over, she pressed the ‘play’ button on the blinking machine and leaned against the wall to listen to the messages.
‘beep’ ‘You have…three…new messages.’ ‘beep’
‘Hey Kags it’s Sango. Give me a call when you get in kay? Laterz.’
‘Kagome! Mom found my fucking magazines! Call me damnit.’
‘Kagome, hi, it’s uh…Inuyasha. Don’t worry, I’m not going to leave some embarrassing message, begging you to give me another chance……..But anyway, I just thought I should call and tell you I won’t be at work tomorrow. I’ll make sure Kikyo is there to help you though. Well….um…Bye.’
‘beep’
A spray of soda sputtered from Kagome’s mouth as she tried to keep from choking on the traitorous liquid. Wiping a hand over her lips, Kagome stared at the now silent machine in shocked horror. She reached her fingers out hesitantly and pressed ‘play’ again, this time fast forwarding through the first two messages.
‘Kagome, hi, it’s uh…Inuyasha……’ Kagome let her head fall back against the wall and groaned. Closing her eyes, she listened to the message, taking in every word and phrase, she couldn’t help but grimace. She heard the ‘beep’ ending the message and shook her head.
“I really am a world class idiot.”
“Oh, I wouldn’t say that.”
Kagome let out a startled cry and jerked her head towards the door. Inuyasha stood there, arms crossed over his chest, lop-sided grin set firmly in place. She stared at him wide eyed and open mouthed. Her hearted started drumming in her chest as he started to walk, no, stalk towards her. His molten eyes flickered from her eyes to her lips, to her eyes again, and Kagome’s breath caught in her throat.
“W-what are you doing Inuyasha?”
“Knocking some sense into you.”
All other thoughts were put on hold as his lips came crashing down on hers. Warm and demanding, his mouth covered hers completely. She hesitated, body stiffening slightly, making him growl and nip her bottom lip with his fangs. His hands molded to her hips as his mouth worked her lips, and she melted against him, wrapping her arms around his neck and kissing him back with every ounce of passion she possessed. She shivered when Inuyasha moaned against her lips, and whimpered when he broke the kiss. He looked down at her with pleading eyes, and when he spoke his voice was broken and husky.
“You’re never leaving me again, you understand? Because I love you Kagome. I love you so damn much….You belong with me, got it wench? You’re mine, and I’m yours, and that’s the way it’s gonna be okay?”
His lips halted any and all verbal responses as Kagome was swept up in his passion once more. His tongue coaxed her lips open and he devoured her from the inside. Kagome could only cling to his shoulders as his lips found her neck, his fangs scraping against the tender flesh. His tongue licked at the tiny scratches, his voice purring in her ear.
“Tell me your mine, Kagome.”
Kagome closed her eyes against the shivers running down her spine. She leaned back and cupped his face with her hands, her thumbs smoothing over his cheek bones. Eyes shining as she stared into his, she leaned forward and placed a soft kiss on his lips.
“I’m yours, Inuyasha. Only yours.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kagome toyed with a strand of silver hair, twirling it around her index finger and letting it fall. Inuyasha was asleep beside her, Kagome curled up against his side. Her bedroom was completely black except for the glow of the neon numbers of her alarm clock. 12:54 a.m. She traced a hand down his chest, the skin smooth and warm against her finger tips. She jerked her hand back when Inuyasha suddenly shifted, rolling to his side to face her. Golden eyes stared at her through the dark.
“Hmm, what’re ya doin’ Kagome?” Kagome blushed and shrugged slightly.
“I uh, I thought you were asleep.”
“Mmm. Well I was until a certain little wench started touching me.”
“Oh.” Inuyasha laughed and pulled her closer against him, his arm draped over her waist. He ducked his head under her chin and started nuzzling the side of her exposed neck, murmuring softly against her skin.
“Mmhmm. It’s really early. Why aren’t you asleep, dreaming of me?”
“I, ah, don’t know. Just couldn’t sleep I guess….Inuyasha?”
“Hmm?”
“I love you, you know.”
She felt him smile against her neck and his arm tightened slightly around her waist.
“I know, but it’s nice to hear it.”
