Previously in chapter 6:

Both Inu Yasha and Sesshomaru had turned to the wall that Inu Yasha had burst through. There, framed by the light from outside, stood Sango, Miroku and Kikyo. A small flea sat on Sango's shoulder.

Miroku turned to Myoga, wonder on his face.

"She really is the chosen one!"

Chapter 7: Back Down the Well

Kagome blinked, a stunned expression fluttered across her unsuspecting face. She shook her head a little and tried to stop the ringing sound in her ears. It was overpowering and slowly she sunk to the floor.

Before she blacked out she saw fleeting images flash before her eyes: Maeka's dead body, an ageless woman and a little red box. Then someone turned the lights off upstairs and she was falling. Falling into an endless darkness that threatened to close in all around her. Kagome struggled trying to keep a grip on reality, but it was no use.

If this is what it feels like to die, she thought, I don't think I care anymore! Then she lost all sense of time and feeling altogether.

Inu Yasha paced outside the tent in which Kagome lay. Day by day she was slowly slipping away from the world. Oddly, the wound on her head where she was knocked out was healed. There was something wrong with Kagome that reached far deeper than any flesh wound could.

Inu Yasha knew that if there was any hope of saving her, she must be taken back to her time. Sadly, Inu Yasha realized that Kagome would have to stay in her own time when she recovered, if she recovered. She would not be returning to the feudal era again.

It is best, he told himself firmly, but his heart was breaking. How could a girl make so much impact on how he felt? But then again, Kagome wasn't a little girl anymore; she was almost eighteen, a well rounded young woman.

"You know Inu Yasha, you can't stay outside that tent forever, you'll starve." Inu Yasha eyed his brother in an irritated way.

"Since when did you start worrying about my health?" Sesshomaru shook his head, smiling a little. "Since you started being stupid, wait never mind, you were always stupid." With that Sesshomaru earned a hard buffet on his head. "Okay, okay… truce?" Inu Yasha rolled his eyes and motioned to Sesshomaru to sit down beside him.

"What's the news?" Sesshomaru got an odd expression on his face, as if he had something to say, but wasn't sure how to say it.

"Well, spit it out!" Inu Yasha was growing agitated.

"Sango and Kikyo found Maeka's body in the forest today." Inu Yasha's eyes widened.

"She's dead then?" He asked, already knowing the answer.

"Yes" Sesshomaru didn't seem too fazed by the kitsune's death. Actually, he looked a little relieved. Inu Yasha wondered why, what had she done that had made Sesshomaru feel that she deserved to die?

"She died of sorcery," Sesshomaru said at last, "There wasn't a mark on her body. But we did find this." He dug in his pocket and produced a small crystal jewel on a string. It glinted in the afternoon light, swaying back and forth with the light breeze. Inu Yasha began to feel light headed; he couldn't pull his eyes away from the strange crystal.

"Snap out of it!" Sesshomaru gave Inu Yasha a smarting slap on the head. Shaking his head to clear it, Inu Yasha glared at Sesshomaru. He shrugged, "Payback."

Meanwhile, miles away, in the town of Kimara a sorceress cleaned her fingernails. She scowled as she read the report from her spy. Nothing but bad news. She hated losing, especially to a mutt and his human friends. It was disgraceful! Then again, she was going to get rid of Jin anyways… why not let them do her dirty work for her?

Someone knocked on her door. "M'lady?" The sorceress opened the door. "Yes?" she asked in feigned friendliness.

"The Kitsune's son; what should we do with him?" the woman's eyes lit up as realization dawned on her. Losing her fake smile, she barked orders to the surprised guard "Bring him here immediately! And DON'T hurt him!"

The guard nodded enthusiastically as he ran to do his mistress's bidding. But the task he was sent on would be his last. Around the corner streaked a small flash of orange. It whizzed past him, making him fall off balance, landing on a suit of armor. His bloodcurdling scream was heard throughout the large stone house as he was impaled upon the suit's long spear.

Hearing the scream the other guards came running, they never noticed the small kitsune escaping out the side door. The little fox demon wiped the sweat off his forehead as he ran deep into the forest, away from the sorceress and her mansion of stone, towards freedom.

Slowly, as if ceremoniously, Inu Yasha, Kikyo, Sango, Miroku, Sesshomaru and Myoga trouped to the well in which Kagome had traveled through to get to the feudal era. She now lay limply in Inu Yasha's arms.

Sango let out a sigh. It carried through the trees and echoed off the cliffs to one side of them. Almost as if that sigh was a signal, the wind came up, making the trees sing their eerie song. Kikyo's face was grim as she surveyed Inu Yasha. He was shivering erratically. He struggled to keep his feelings under control. A solitary tear trickled down Kikyo's face.

She would miss Kagome. It was odd to think that, because of the hate that Kagome and Kikyo used to have for each other, but now it seemed like the fights and bitter words that were exchanged were almost friendly; sibling rivalry if you will.

Kikyo looked at the faces of her comrades. Sango was shaking with silent tears. Now I know how she felt when she lost her family, Kikyo realized. She looked around to focus on Miroku and Sesshomaru; they both had on masks of stone. Miroku looked about ready to burst. Kikyo realized that Myoga was turning a bright shade of red. She raised an eyebrow. What now?

Myoga couldn't stand it anymore. "GOD PEOPLE, GET A HOLD OF YOURSELVES!" he shouted, Inu Yasha jumped and almost dropped the unconscious Kagome. Myoga was now taking deep breaths to get his boiling temper under control.

"You can't do this to her! Fine, take her back to the Common Era if you must, but let her come back!" Myoga took another deep breath and continued, "Have you forgotten? She's the Chosen One; the one who will save us!"

Kikyo smiled, it was time for Inu Yasha to realize Kagome's true purpose. She would not die. She was the living proof that the prophecies were true!

Everyone waited, with baited breath for Inu Yasha to react. Slowly he lifted his head as the tears he had been holding back poured down his burning cheeks. He set his jaw, nodded to Myoga in a signal of thanks, and jumped down the well.
