Kagome sighed. It had been a long day of demon fighting to restore the shikon jewel. Although the team had successfully recovered another shard they were still a mere half way done with their quest. Throwing the jeweled necklace on her neck, Kagome started back to Kaede's hut to sleep.
On the way back Kagome made a detour toward the forest near the village. There, she peered around and tried to catch a glimpse of white hair and doggie ears. Inu Yasha said he needed some "time to think," whatever that meant.
Kagome strained her eyes. The sun had almost set and it was getting hard to see. Finally, when she was almost to the well, Kagome spotted him in a very large tree. "Hey Inu Yasha. We better go back to Kaede's hut before it gets so dark we can't see."
"Keh," was the response.
"Fine!" Kagome yelled shrilly, "I'll just go back without you!"
"You do that. Go back to that old hag, she hates me any ways," he yelled back.
Kagome frowned. She was starting to get really ticked off at that idiot. God, he was such a moron. She narrowed her eyes and yelled back, "SIT!" At that Inu Yasha flew down from the tree breaking several branches and landed face first in the dust. Kagome turned on her heels and stomped off toward the village.
"Bitch," was the muffled insult that came back to her.
Kagome ignored it. She was so mad at him. On top of his ignorance, he always gave her a hard time. Especially today when they went through a neighboring village and a young man stopped to compliment her. Inu Yasha had knocked the guy out cold, picked Kagome up, and ran out of the village.
Kagome was half way out of the forest when the bushes beside her started to move. She froze in her tracks unsure if it were some type of animal, or something stalking her. She strained all her senses and after about a minute was positive that it was some type of demon.
After a while of standing around and waiting for the attacker to come out, she started to move again. Kagome picked up her pace a bit hoping to get away from whatever it was. `That's odd,' she thought to herself, `Why did that thing suddenly go away?' Just then the trees above her rustled and a type of ninja demon jumped out at her standing perfectly normal as if not to attack.
The demon looked quite normal except for its claws. It was covered from head to toe in black cloth making it look quite menacing. A sword was sitting in its sheath around the attacker's waist and suddenly it took a step forward.
"I-Inu Yasha…" the girl whispered hoarsely.
"So you are the miko who helps Inu Yasha on his quest to restore the shiko-no-tama? Am I right?" The attacker asked in a low, steady voice. Clearly the attacker was male.
"Y-Yes," Kagome stammered.
"Good. I can't find that half wit, but you can deliver this to him," the man said holding out a rolled piece of parchment.
"What is it?" Kagome asked, regaining much of her confidence.
"The invitation to the Demon Tournament. Inu Yasha is not required to go, but if he wants to he is welcome. All the information is in that letter," and with that the man jumped into the trees and headed off somewhere else.
Kagome was quite curious as to what the "Demon Tournament" was. She looked down at the parchment. Well, Inu Yasha was probably too lazy to participate in them anyway. With that thought Kagome unrolled the letter and began to read:
_____________________________________________________
Annual Invitation to the Upcoming Demon Tournament
This century's demon tournament is approaching rapidly. All personnel who have a sliver of demon blood in them are invited to participate in the tournament. The Demon tournament decides who will be the new lords of the cardinal land areas: Northern lands, southern lands, eastern lands, and western lands. The old rulers are permitted to participate and regain control of their lands.
If a person is to be injured or die in the upcoming tournament, the D.T.a, or Demon Tournament associates, are not to be held responsible. When entered in this event you will take your life into your own hands. All the rules will be explained when and if you arrive at the fields. This century's demon wars will be held in the northern lands. All you must do is show up to participate. Sign in when you get there.
Sincerely,
D.T.a
D.T.a
Kagome gasped. `This could be a great opportunity to sniff out all the demons with any remaining shards of the jewel!' she thought. `The only problem is getting Inu Yasha to participate in them…now how can I do that?'
~.~.~.~.~.~.~.
"No way!!! You can't make me participate in that lousy tournament!" Inu Yasha yelled at Kagome back at the hut. "Why would I even want to be ruler of some stupid land anyway?!"
"I keep telling you!" Kagome yelled back just as loudly, "We're not going to win, we're going to find demons with shards of the jewel! There'll probably be loads of them every way we look!"
Inu Yasha didn't say anything back..
"You know," Lady Kaede said very calmly as she sipped her green tea, "Kagome does have a point. If you go to the tournament you'll probably save a healthy amount of time restoring the jewel than you would sniffing each piece out individually."
"And since when do I ever give a damn to what you think?" Inu Yasha retorted.
"I've had enough of you!" Kagome said back pursing her lips. "If you don't……."
"Shut up bitch!" Inu Yasha said.
"SIT SIT SIT SIT SIT SIT SIT SIT SIT!!!" Kagome screamed back sending him pummeling into the ground numerous times. "Now, then," She continued in a tone of forced calmness, "I'm going to bed now. I'll give you the night to think over the tournament. And," she added, "If you don't go the tournament I'll say the s-word so many times you'll feel like you're dead anyway."
With that Kagome walked into the other room slamming the door behind her. Inu Yasha stared at the door, in some ways looking as if he wanted to burn it down with his mind. He didn't really care if it took a longer time to get the shards piece by piece, as long as he didn't have to participate in that mangy tournament and face his brother.
"Well, I think it is time to go to bed then," Kaede said, once again very calmly. "Good night Inu Yasha."
"Keh, old hag," he said once Kaede had left the room. With that, he pulled out his sleeping pad and blew out the lantern.
