The man behind Kagura smiled. It was a secretive smile, a smile that told more that it should, yet nothing at all. Inuyasha stared at him a while, his long dark hair hung down his shoulders in wavy tendrils that ended somewhere between his shoulders and his waist, he couldn't tell from this angle. He had sharp penetrating crimson eyes that held a dark amusement not all to threatening but not welcoming either.

Naraku nodded at Inuyasha, and Inuyasha hesitantly nodded back, having momentarily lost his argumentative nature.

“It's a pleasure to meet you Inuyasha; you have turned out quite nicely. Not that I expected differently, you showed such promise during the examinations, but I do have the habit of expecting too much only to be disappointed.

Snapping back Inuyasha growled low and threateningly. “You were the one who did this?” he asked accusingly.

Naraku's smile wavered a bit, trepidation, guilt or annoyance, he couldn't tell, not that he cared. The bastard had better explain himself quick, or he would discover just how sharp these new claws of his were.

“Yes, I authorized the procedure, but you must understand the reason behind these experimentations.”

“What? What could possibly justify using people like rats in a lab!”

“Protectors,” The one word hit Inuyasha like a knife through cheesecake.

“You mean…like government created superheroes?” He asked timidly, a strange childish light entered his eyes. Kagura rolled hers, typical boyhood dreams.

“Think about it Inuyasha,” Naraku said the name like a prize, “So many people die in wars, people with lives and families and jobs back here. They shouldn't be over there in those dangerous situations, not when there are so many people without homes or families or jobs.”

He walked up close to Inuyasha, placing a hand on his shoulder and looking at him with determination in his eyes. “People like you, who have nothing but fading memories, good and bad, to cling to. People who are out there living like rats in the sewer. Tell me what is better, living on the street, or living like you are now?”

Inuyasha couldn't quite answer, he had only been this way maybe an hour or so, and though he lived well on the streets he knew he was a lucky one. “Rats in the sewer or rats in a lab, interesting choices.” He commented and Naraku laughed. It was a deep, rich chuckle, full of genuine amusement.

“True, but at least here you won't have to worry about predators or diseases, and you get fed regularly.”

“Not cheese I hope.” Inuyasha smirked.

“We'll be sure to give you a variety.” Naraku said, placing a hand on Inuyasha's upper back he gently guided Inuyasha into the room beyond the open mirror.

“Havarti is my favorite.” They both laughed. Kagura followed behind, shaking her head. She had never seen her boss attach himself to an experiment so quickly. She couldn't help but wonder what he had planned for this one.
