Chapter 2:
Something I Need You To Understand*

People have different ideas on what happens after they die.  Religious people think that
depending on how they lived on Earth, they will go to heaven or hell.  Atheists think they
will simply become one with the Earth as natural fertilizer and some believe in
reincarnation.

I’m going to tell you that they’re all wrong.

Death comes in separate divisions.  There are the good people, the bad people, the too
young to be considered either, and the category I have found myself in; the suicides.  I
can’t tell you about what it’s like for the other divisions because I’ve never been there, I
can only tell you about the suicides.

The last thing I remembered before entering the division was laying in my own blood.
When I awoke, I was in a big white room that looked like the waiting room at a doctor’s
office.  And when I say white room, I mean everything is white from the floors to the
magazines and the clock on the wall.  The clock had no numbers and the hands were
frozen at eleven thirty.

â€œInuyasha?† I got off the floor and saw a nurse behind a counter.  â€œInuyasha right?†

â€œWhere am I?† My clothes were covered in blood and my wrists were still cut.

â€œThis is the suicide division in the death department.  You died on July 12, 2010 due to
blood loss from lacerations of your wrists.  My name is Yui, I’ll be your intake nurse.†

â€œWhat do you mean â€˜death department’?  Am I in the hospital?†

â€œNo sir, this is what happens after you die.†

I stood there dumbfounded.  My head was swimming and I felt sick.

â€œPlease step through the door to your right and we’ll get started.†

    â€œStarted on what?†

    â€œOn your next life.†

I had so many questions but I didn’t know how to form them into complete sentences.
I decided to wait until I woke up, I hoped this was a dream.  I turned to my right and
went through the door to another white room.  I sat in the chair next to the sink waiting
for...well I didn’t know for what.  After a few minutes Yui walked back in with a white
clipboard and closed the door behind her.  This is when I noticed that her whole body was

wet like she just jumped into a swimming pool.  I didn’t think anything of it.

â€œAlright Inuyasha, I’m here to help you with the first twenty-four hours.  If you have
any questions, now will be the best time to ask.†

    â€œWhere am I?†

â€œThe suicide division.  I know I keep repeating myself, it may take a while for it to
sink in.  You need to know that you are dead, you have been for about four hours.†

    â€œWhere do I go from here?†

â€œSince you died from suicide, you are here to live another life.  We believe that since
you killed yourself because you hated life, we have created a place where you can live
the life you wanted to live...within reason.†

â€œHow is this going to work?†

â€œYou will be assigned a job and a place to live and when you get the hang of things
you can decide from there.†

    â€œWhat do I do if I need help?†

â€œOnce a week, you will be attending a group therapy meeting with others like yourself
and a mediator that will assist you in your new life.  You will also be assigned a buddy to
help you for the first three months.  You two will be living in the same home.  Is there
anything else?†

    â€œI guess not.†

â€œAlright.  Here is a list of rules that you will need to follow while you are living the
next life.† She took a paper from her clip board and handed it to me.  â€œPlease read all
rules and agree to the terms.†
I found the rules to be pretty simple and pretty odd at the same time:

1. Do not attempt to kill yourself again.
2. Do not kill others.
3. You must live in assigned living arrangements until the three month probationary
period is over.
4. You must work in assigned job placement until the three month probationary period is
over.
5. You must attend group therapy until the three month probationary period is over.
6. Failure to abide by the rules will result in immediate relocation to the Bad People
division for permanent residency.

    â€œYou have a pen?  I don’t see where to sign it.†

â€œYou don’t need to by hand, just say that you agree out loud, your signature should
appear at the bottom.†

I did and sure enough my signature appeared on the paper as if by magic.  Yui looked
at me and smiled.  I wasn’t the first one to be surprised by this.  She took the paper and a
copy of it came out of thin air.

â€œHere is a copy for your records.  Outside, there will be a driver waiting to take you to
your assigned living arrangement.  Your buddy will take you to your job in the morning.†

She pointed to the door we entered from and smiled.

â€œI have a feeling you’re going to do well here.†

I got up and opened the door.  The other side was no longer the waiting room, but the
outside of a city.  There was a taxi waiting for me on the street.  I turned to Yui.

    â€œI have one more question.†

    â€œGo ahead.†

    â€œHow did you kill yourself?†

She stayed quite for a few moments.  Her smile faded and she sighed inwardly.

â€œI jumped into the river when it was raining.  They didn’t find me for a week.†

I looked at her and I wanted to cry.  Such a nice and pretty young woman, I didn’t ask
why she did it.  I walked outside and into the cab.  This was the beginning of my new
life.
