Prologue

Disclaimers: I don't own any characters in this story. The Great Rumiko Takahashi does.

Anyone I loved always ending up with them either making fun of me or leaving me behind.

I once loved my father, but where is he now? He left us and got married to someone else. My mother. Once full of hope, happiness and love got very ill after my father left us. Oh how I hate her when she won't take care of herself! She always says that there's no reason for her to live. Doesn't she think about us? Me and my brother Souta?

I tried my best to make her feel better. I work day and night so our family can eat three times a day and my mother can have her medication. I also have to stop school so my brother Sota can finish his studies. I work as a waitress in the morning and maid in the evening. It's really tiring but I don't have other choice. Oh how I really hate my father. I hate him so much that when the time comes that we were going to meet each other again, I'm going to beat the living hell out of him.

We live in a shrine. We really don't have much property but this

Shrine and a piece of so-called Shikon no Tama jewel that I inherited from my grandfather. Unfortunately, my grandfather was killed. The most painful part is that I saw the whole thing with my own eyes and can't do anything. I was just a helpless kid when that happened. My father was still with us but unfortunately, can't help because he was no where to be found. He's not really there when you need him.

A group of men wearing black suit went to my grandfather and asked him if he knows anything about `Shikon no Tama'. My grandfather answered that he doesn't know anything about it, but they didn't believe him and beat him up. Then one of the men pulled out a pistol from his suit pocket and shot my grand father. I can't do anything but cry. Before the men had arrived, grand father told me to hide behind the bushes and stay there no matter what happens.

The men searched all over the shrine for an hour and finally found what they were looking for. It is a round pearl-like-shimmering stone.

They left my grand father lying down on the ground with pouring rain.

After they're gone, I ran beside my grand father. The only thing I did was to cry the whole time and begging him not to leave us. He said he won't and shed my tears away. To my surprise, he held the same pearl-like-shimmering stone and handed it to me. He said, in a very prudent way, to take care of it. But unfortunately he still died.

And so now, no one knows where the jewel is except me of course. I heard that the jewel brings good fortune but I doubt it because of what it did to my grand father.
