The Mystic's Dance by Loreena McKennitt
A clouded dream on an earthly night
Hangs upon the crescent moon
A voiceless song in an ageless light
Sings at the coming dawn
Birds in flight are calling there
Where the heart moves the stones
It's there that my heart is longing for
All for the love of you
A painting hangs on an ivy
Nestled in the emerald moss
The eyes declare a truce of trust
And then it draws me far away
Where deep in the desert twilight
Sand melts in pools of the sky
When darkness lays her crimson cloak
Your lamps will call me home
And so it's there my homage's due
Clutched by the still of the night
And now I feel you move
Every breath is full
So it's there my homage's due
Clutched by the still of the night
Even the distance feels so near
All for the love of you.
Aliya stared at Inuyasha wide eyed. "I-I'm.... what?" she breathed, her head suddenly felt light. She quickly reached out to grab onto Inuyasha's shoulders but the hanyou wrapped his arms around her middle.
He held her there at arm's length watching her. The young woman's eyes fell as she realized the severity of the situation she was in now. She was carrying a child. Her child. The thought surprised her and sent waves of chills over her body.
She stepped away from the hanyou and ran her fingers through her brown hair. "I'm pregnant..." she said quietly. Inuyasha watched the young woman as she walked away from him. Aliya turned around and looked at him. "How can you be sure?"
Although she asked the question, she already knew that what he said was true. She had felt it in her heart. "I can... smell the blood of the child growing inside of you," Inuyasha said quietly as Aliya sat down with her hands in her head.
The hanyou moved towards her and sat down beside her. Inuyasha watched her face. "I... also know... something else about the child, Aliya..." he said. He looked down trying to hide the hurt in his eyes. "Inuyasha..." Aliya ventured to say but she didn't know what to say to him. "I know that the child is a hanyou. An inu-hanyou." Aliya looked up at him in surprise.
"You know that... about my baby?" she whispered. She was already referring to the hanyou growing in her belly as her baby. "Yes..." Inuyasha said thoughtfully. He didn't want to think of what that meant. She is pregnant with an inu-hanyou.... That would mean that she has... mated or at least been with an inu-daisho. But... who....
Aliya turned her face away from Inuyasha. The inu-hanyou wrapped his arms around her body. "Aliya... what are you going to do?" "I am keeping my baby..." she said without hesitation. "And who's baby is it, Aliya?"
The young woman didn't answer him right away. She didn't know how to answer him. "Inuyasha..." The hanyou felt his heart nearly break. He knew from the way she hesitated that she knew as well as he did who the father was.
"The father of my baby is... Lord Sesshomaru-sama of the Western Lands..." she whispered. Inuyasha moved away from the young woman and began to pace around the cave. "Inuyasha..." she said hesitantly. The hanyou dropped before her on his knees and grabbed her. "Tell me he took you... raped you..." he said.
Aliya stared at Inuyasha not believing what he was saying to her. "Inuyasha, Sesshomaru did not rape me. I slept with him willingly. He loves me... and... I... I love him..." Inuyasha stared at Aliya in surprise. He raised a shaky hand to her face. The young woman closed her eyes and bit her bottom lip gently.
Just as his hand made contact with her cheek, Inuyasha pulled his hand away and stood up. "I... want to be angry. But I can't..." the hanyou began but stopped himself. "Inuyasha.. I'm sorry..." Aliya said before standing up herself and leaving the cave. The hanyou remained inside the cave digesting what he had just learned.
The woman he had loved... the reincarnation of the demon he had betrayed was impregnated with the baby of his brother. This child that was growing in Aliya's belly was not his but will be his niece or nephew. He ran his long clawed fingertips through his hair. I.. can't blame her for what happened. I did this... this is my fault. If I had not lied to her... tried to hide the truth from her even as she was learning it....
Koga walked into the cave. "Where did Aliya go?" Inuyasha looked up at the Okami. "She... I don't know. But we have to bring her back here and protect her... and her child," Inuyasha said as he walked out of the cave. "Oh okay..." Koga said as he followed after the hanyou. It merely took him a few seconds for him to realize what Inuyasha had said. "CHILD!?" he thundered.
Aliya wrapped her arms around herself. She was pregnant and Sesshomaru was the father. Back in her time she had heard that when some women become pregnant they can sense the little child growing inside them. The same was for her. She could sense that something was happening to her body. Especially since she had not had her period.
"What am I going to do? Sesshomaru deserves to know..." she whispered to herself. The thought had not occurred to her what he would think about this. He may have asked her to mate with him but that did not necessarily mean that he wanted to have a child with her especially so soon. She realized that she would have to go back to the Western Lands.
"If you are thinking of going back to my brother, it would be best that we wait until after you have the baby," Inuyasha's voice came from behind her. Aliya turned towards the two youkai. "He has to know..." she said. Inuyasha's arms were folded over his chest as he glared down at the young woman. "Aliya we cant risk you losing the baby or your life."
The young woman sighed and looked down. "Yeah, I know..." she whispered as she made her way back towards the cave. Koga watched Inuyasha silently for a moment. "You are excepting this? Aliya is carrying your brother's child." "I have to accept it, Koga. I may love her but... this is my fault." Inuyasha said.
The Okami nodded his head. He did not understand why his friend believed this but he respected his thoughts. And found himself wondering if he would have been able to make the same call if this had happened to him. Inuyasha returned to the cave alone to find Aliya starting a fire. He watched her quietly from his place against the wall. Aliya tried to ignore his presence and that he was staring at her but after a few seconds it got on her nerves.
"Do you want to say something?" she asked him, she struggled to keep the temper out of her voice but it was hard considering the circumstances and her condition. Inuyasha pushed himself off the wall and walked over to her. The hanyou squatted behind her and wrapped his arms around her.
"I just wanted to let you know that... I love you, Aliya..." he whispered into her ear. "I will always love you. But... I know you love my brother. I can't blame you for that... I know that this was my own doing. If I could go back I would tell you all that I felt for you, I know I can't. I will still protect you for as long as you need me..."
Aliya shuddered feeling the sensation of Inuyasha's hot breath falling upon her ear and cheek. She couldn't say anything only nodded as the hanyou held her a few moments longer before standing up and walking towards the mouth of the cave. "I'll take Koga out on a hunt... I know you should be hungry... I'll be back as soon as I can." With that the hanyou left the young woman drowning in her own thoughts.
The days came and went and Aliya stomach grew larger. Inuyasha watched as the young woman struggled with the access weight she had gained as her baby grew. Every time he looked upon her, he had to remind himself that the baby she was carrying was not his own but that of his brother and the mere thought broke his heart all the time.
He wanted more than anything for that baby to be his but fate was against him yet again. The hanyou did all he could to make the young woman comfortable until the day that Aliya's water broke, the day the baby decided to appear in the world. Inuyasha and Koga stayed by the young mother's side worried over her condition. "Inuyasha..." Koga said as they watched Aliya. "We have to take her to a doctor..."
"We can't. No human doctor will accept her. She's a hanyou bearing a demon's child," Inuyasha said as he wiped Aliya's sweating brow. "So what do you suggest we do?" Koga asked. "We'll have to... bring the baby into the world." The Okami looked at the hanyou as if he had grown a third head. Inuyasha glared at his friend. "I'm not kidding, Koga. I'm going to do it and you're going to help me."
Koga sighed heavily. Dammit... he thought but dared not say aloud fearing not only Inuyasha's temper but the temper that Aliya had grown over the past few weeks as her belly grew. "Go support her head and shoulders... I'll be at her feet," Inuyasha said. The Okami nodded and moved himself to the young woman's head. Koga lifted Aliya's head onto his lap and watched her face that was sweating profusely now.
Inuyasha moved towards Aliya's feet. He gently took her ankles in his hands and spread her legs apart. Peering underneath her kimonos, Inuyasha could see that Aliya was opened and the baby's head was starting to appear. "Kuso..." he hissed as he pushed Aliya's legs into a bent position and widened them. "Aliya, you are going to have to.... um..." Inuyasha said.
The hanyou realized he had made a mistake in judgment. He had never delivered a baby nor had he ever seen one brought into the world. He closed his eyes as he growled at his own ignorance. Where is that lecher when he could really be of some use? "Inuyasha!!" The hanyou's eyes snapped open to see Aliya staring at him through tired eyes. "I... I have to p-push the baby out. You'll have to guide mmmmn....." she moaned.
Inuyasha smiled mentally as he returned to his position. He watched in quiet awe as the baby's head emerged from Aliya. Reaching out he prepared to take its head when he realized that he should have cleaned his hands before he took the baby. Scrambling Inuyasha went over to their water supply and scrubbed his hands quickly before going back and taking the head of the baby.
Slowly and patiently, the hanyou guided the baby out of the mother. Aliya let out a blood chilling scream as she gave a final push. Inuyasha sat back staring down at the baby he held in his arms. Standing up he went over to the water supply and took a scrap of cloth. Gently he washed the baby then wrapped it in a fur.
As he watched the baby, two eyes opened revealing a light honey color. Inuyasha smiled as he felt his heart melt at seeing those eyes. The baby stared up at him with wonder. The hanyou walked over towards the tired mother and handed her the baby. "What.. is it?" Koga asked as he wiped Aliya's face and neck from the sweat that had gathered there.
Aliya smiled down at her baby as she pulled out her breast and placed her nipple in the mouth. "The baby is a girl," Inuyasha whispered. Koga smiled as well as he stared at Aliya's breast. The hanyou caught the Okami's gaze and punched him roughly.
"Don't stare at that..." he hissed. Aliya leaned forward and kissed her baby daughter's head. She already had silvery white hair growing. But unlike her uncle, she did not have dog ears protruding from the top of her head. "What will you name her?" Inuyasha asked her. "I will name her..." The young mother paused trying to think. "Lily..." Aliya whispered tiredly as she closed her eyes.
Sesshomaru stared ahead of him as Ah and Uhn flew gracefully through the cool night air. He could still feel it... a power drawing him towards the Middle Lands. Somehow he knew it had to do with Aliya. Although Sesshomaru had allowed the young woman to leave his palace, he had known all along that he would be bringing her back.
She was his mate. Even if she did not bare his mark yet. As the dragon flew through the air, the Inu-Daisho sensed that he had a child bore to him. The thought had not caused any emotional difference within him but he knew that he wanted the child as well as his mate to return to his palace.
Inuyasha stroked Lily's hair gently with the flat part of his finger watching the baby's golden gaze as it never left his. Suddenly he felt a presence near the cave and he broke his eyes away from the baby's and stood up to watch Sesshomaru enter into the cave. Both brothers stared at each other neither saying anything but were sizing each other up.
Lily cooed as she let go of her mother's nipple causing their gaze to drop to her. With great speed and grace the Inu-Daisho Lord whisked his daughter into his arms. Aliya opened her eyes slowly but when she realized that her daughter was no longer in her arms she looked around before raising them to gaze upon the father.
Sesshomaru gazed coldly down at her. "So... I allow you to leave our palace to gather yourself and this is how you repay my kindness? To be with my brother?" Aliya's mouth opened to say something but no words came out. She knew in a way that he was right.
She had known how Sesshomaru had felt about Inuyasha and vice versa she should have left Inuyasha alone. "Sesshomaru... it's not like that..." Inuyasha began to say but was stopped short with a brute punch to his face sending the hanyou colliding with the cave wall.
"Sesshomaru... please," she finally managed to croak out her throat tired from screaming. The Youkai Lord's gaze hardened. "You want to be with Inuyasha so be it. But I will not allow my daughter to be raised by him." And with that, Sesshomaru was gone. Aliya tried desperately to get up but her body refused to let her and she was only able to roll onto her side. "Lily..." she whispered before losing consciousness.
