CHAPTER 3: FIRST DAY PART II
Sango and Kagome made it to Computers class on time, where they met their teacher, Mr. Kogitsu, a regale self composed fellow with a bright smile and nice personality. His bright smile matched his bright baldhead, but Sango didn't let him hear that. He introduced the concept of the class and asked Kagome if she knew how to work a computer. Kagome laughed and said yes, she knew. After the kids got some free time on the computers and talked about their summer vacations the whole period, they moved on to their next class. Kagome had met a lot of people, with some help from Sango. They were all friendly to her, welcoming her and making her laugh as they described their school. She noticed that the boys particularly liked her. Well, she didn't like to be vain, but it was flattering.
They then went on to PE class, where Kagome was introduced to the teachers Ms. Umeko and Mr. Totoshai.
"So what was gym like in your old school?" Ms. Umeko asked.
Kagome snorted, "hard. Those nuns were like slave drivers. We even ran track in the rain. It might have been a school for girls, but it was more like a boot camp."
They laughed a little till all of a sudden, a cheer broke out. A group of boys were in a circle, cheering and chanting madly. "Kick his ass man!" one yelled. "Show him who's boss!" another cheered. There were grunts as hits made their mark. Mr. Totoshai sighed as he realized who it was. He jogged over and broke up the crowd.
"Okay, guys you had your fun. Cut it out. Kouga, Yusuke, stop it." The crowd dispersed, complaining they never get to have fun. By now, Kagome, Sango and the rest of the class were very interested. Every one but Kagome went back to talking as they heard who was fighting. Kagome was very curious to see who it was, just in case she needed to stay away from some people.
The two fighters came walking back, arms slung over each other's shoulders friendly like. One was a boy of about 16, with gleaming jet-black hair (too much hair gel) and dark eyes, and a lopsided grin. He wasn't tall, maybe a bit less than six feet, but was still nicely built. But his companion caught Kagome's attention. He had long black hair tied in a high ponytail. He wore a black t-shirt and blue jeans with old work boots. His eyes were a bright electric blue, which looked like he had no pupils. He had…fangs? And claws? And a tail!
She turned to Sango, "oh my god! That guy's a demon!"
Sango spared a glance, "oh yeah, him. Yeah he's a demon, wolf demon. They're rare, but we get demons occasionally. Miroku told me…" Sango trailed off. She realized she wasn't the one to tell her that Inuyasha had demon blood. She'll find out eventually.
"Miroku told you what?" Kagome pushed.
"Uh, nothing. Its not important." You're such a bad lair! Kagome shrugged and let it go.
"Your such a prick," Kouga gave Yusuke a friendly punch in his ribs.
"Shut up asshole" Yusuke laughed, and turned his head. He spotted Kagome. He whistled and bit a knuckle.
"Wow…damn."
"What?" Kouga asked.
"Turn around and you'll see the finest thing that walks this earth! of course besides
Keoko."
Kouga turned to where Yusuke pointed and grinned as he saw what made his friend so hot. A girl of about five-five glanced their way. She was petite, but still very curvy. She wore jean kapris and a pink t-shirt that said, "I love boys, they remind me of money" on the front in blue letters. Her front wasn't too bad either. And those legs, made his fingers itch just looking at them. She had shoulder blade length raven hair, and from what he could tell, really dark brown eyes. When she bent down to whisper in her friend's ear, her backside was very appealing.
Kouga straightened his shirt, made sure he looked all right. Yusuke snickered as he started to head Kagome's way.
"Uh oh, Kouga's going in for the kill!"
"Shut up Yusuke."
Kouga made his way to Kagome, acting casual. But Kagome was very aware of Kouga's course, and she wasn't feeling very comfortable about it. She stuck close to Sango, hoping her friend would get her out of it if need be. Sango finally looked up from her conversation with another student when Kouga arrived. Pulling Kagome closer she quickly thought of a reason to leave if the need arises.
Kouga stuck his hand out to Kagome. "Hi, I'm Kouga Karwasuma. I heard a rumor going around about a new girl, so since I've never seen you before I assumed it was you and came to introduce myself."
Kagome met the fellow junior's grip as she shook hands with him. "Well, I guess you assume right. Yeah, I'm the new kid. My name's Kagome Higurashi."
"Kagome? Like in the song? Well, it's a very pretty name." Kouga smiled nicely, showing his short but sharp fangs. Kagome spared his fangs a glance. He wasn't so scary up close. So what he was a demon, made no difference to her. She was just surprised at first.
"So," Kouga piped up, "where did you go before here?"
"An all girls school. Dojima's school for girls. It sucked hugely." they chatted for while, comparing tastes in music, school subjects, where they live. All the while, Kagome just wished the class would end. Kouga was nice, but he was flirting just a bit too much. Sango noticed her discomfort and pulled her away, saying they needed to discuss something private. When they were at a safe distance, Kagome sighed in relief.
"God, I never thought he'd stop. He kept trying to get close too. Thanks for saving me."
"No problem," Sango waved it off, "but I should warn you, what ever you do, don't date him."
"What made you think I would?" Kagome snorted and crossed her arms.
"Anyways~, as I was saying, don't date him. From as I hear it, he's a total player. And you know…I'm worried about you. He isn't exactly the gentle type."
Kagome's posture stiffened, then relaxed. She hated to be reminded of him. "Its okay Sango, I know you worry. But I'm over it, I guarantee it. I'm a free woman!" she cheered this to the sky outside the building, knowing that they were clear and blue. Sango hooted with her as they celebrated Kagome's carefree life. Kouga watched amused. That Kagome was something. And now that he knew she was free, he definitely had his sights on her.
The piercing bell rang once again, signaling the students to herd aimlessly to the cafeteria for whatever was served.
"Lunch time!" Sango chirped.
"Oh thank god, I'm starving! I didn't eat anything this morning I was so nervous!" the girls laughed out the hallway. Kouga wasn't far behind; he was keeping an eye on Kagome. Maybe he'd get to talk to her more. They had enough time; they had over an hour for lunch this year.
Towards the other end of the building, Inuyasha and Miroku were just leaving Mr. Kogistu's computer class. They were having an argument of who was better at a game.
"No way! I totally whipped your ass in that game," Miroku exclaimed.
"That's only cause you kept pushing my hands out of the way!" Inuyasha protested.
Miroku waved him off, "you're a sore loser you know."
"feh whatever."
"Hey," Miroku elbowed him, "you think the girl's will be there waiting for us?"
"What?" Inuyasha turned slightly pink on the bridge of his nose, "why would they?"
Miroku shrugged, "just wondering."
They strode through the double doors of the cafeteria, waves of talking teenagers chatting loudly washed over them. Each kid tried talking louder than the other, so not much was heard.
Kagome and Sango were in line for lunch, tempting smells causing stomachs to rumble. As the line moved slowly, Sango sighed in exasperation. "Whatever it is, it smells great. They must have hired a whole new kitchen crew this year. Usually, only the brave went up for lunch."
"I just hope they hurry, cause I'm about to knock some people and grab whatever looks good." Kagome's stomach gave a loud agreement to the plan. When they came next after some time, they almost caved in happiness.
"Cheeseburgers and fries! Oh it's a dream come true!" Sango cheered.
"You're telling me! Burgers have never looked so good." The girls held up their trays and were rewarded with hot fries and cheeseburgers. They grabbed a drink and went to pay.
Sango paid for hers, exchanging greetings with the cashier lady. But Kagome went for her money, she found none. Searching hurriedly in all her pockets, her hands came up empty. She slapped her forehead with her palm. Stupid!
"I forgot my money on the table!" Kagome growled.
Sango merely laughed, "don't worry I'll get it."
Kagome clasped her hands together, "thank you Sango, I promise I'll pay you back."
"No need," a hand slapped a couple hundred yen on the counter, "I'll get it for you."
"Oh…well…that's really not necessary Kouga-kun." Kagome sputtered.
"No really I insist. And please call me Kouga."
"Its okay, really," Sango slide the money towards him, "she's fine without it."
"No I insist," Kouga slide the money back, and exchanged heated glares with Sango.
Kagome held out a hand to stop them, "you guys…" but then some one came to the rescue.
"Here, I'll get it," Inuyasha handed the lunch lady enough to pay for his and Kagome's lunch. The lady took the money, and sent a disappointed glare at Sango and Kouga. Kagome stared, then blushed. She said a soft thank you and took her tray. Miroku came from behind Inuyasha and stood next to Sango.
"Is there any trouble here Sango-chan?" he said roughly.
Still glaring at Kouga, she huffed and notched her chin forward, "not a bit."
But Kouga wasn't paying attention anymore. He was staring darkly at Inuyasha, who stared back sort of amused. Kouga had saw Kagome blush, and it angered him. He saw her first! As Inuyasha calmly walked past a tense Kouga, Kouga growled, "dog-turd."
"Reject," Inuyasha growled back, and went on his way. Kagome glanced between the two of them, then followed Inuyasha. Sango and Miroku followed suit.
Miroku went up to walk beside Inuyasha, like a right hand man should, and Kagome fell back to Sango. She whispered worriedly to her closet friend. "Did I do something wrong?"
Sango snorted, "hardly. It's always been this way between them. I'd hear how they always get into fights, with neither the winner. Don't worry about it."
Though reassured, Kagome was still tense. It wasn't even the end of her first day and already drama had taken over. Her life was full of drama. She rolled her eyes mentally as she thought about her life at the shrine. Her Jii-chan expected her to be this great miko, and follow in the family tradition of protecting the shrine. Against what? From what she read and was told, the great youkai of Japan had faded away years ago. The things that attacked the shrine in the past were small and few. She even got rid of them with her meager archery skills when she started lessons. But to boost her ego, she reminded herself that those skills were almost expert now, her accuracy up to three out of four. She planned to go for the four soon. She even succeeds in her meditations now, not falling asleep sitting up but actually meditating.
Kagome didn't notice that she had fallen behind while the others had gone to find a table. She snapped out of it when she bumped into someone's arm.
"Oh my god, I'm so sorry, I wasn't paying attention." She apologized and looked at the person she ran into. She froze in shock. How could it be…? This girl…this girl had her face. And she had the girl's face.
Kikyou sniffed, straightened her dark purple dress, and looked down her nose at the girl who had waved to Inuyasha earlier. Now was her chance, "watch where you're going next time. I'm Kikyou, and I'm going to say this to you once. Stay away from Inuyasha."
And with that, kikyou walked off to her table, leaving a very bewildered Kagome staring after her. Stay away from Inuyasha? What the hell was that suppose to mean?
"Kagome!" Sango waved to her friend from a table. Across from her were Miroku and Inuyasha, who was shoving his food down. Still a bit stunned, Kagome sat down next to Sango with a very confused face.
"Are you okay? I saw you run into kikyou. What did she say to you?" Sango put a hand on her friend's shoulder.
Kagome opened her mouth to say it, but cut a glance to Inuyasha, and snap her jaw shut. Instead she leaned toward Sango and whispered in her ear, "she told me to stay away from Inuyasha. What is that suppose to mean?"
Sango let out a frustrated breath. "That stupid, mindless, arrogant…don't worry about it Kagome, she's just being an egotistical airhead."
Unknown to the girls, Inuyasha's pinned ears heard everything. His eyes flashed in kikyou's direction heatedly. Why that little git…she just didn't get it did she? And he thought he was thickheaded. What was it to her if he hung out with Kagome? They had stopped dating a long time ago, yet she still thought they were together. He snorted softly. Hell, he could even date Kagome and she couldn't do anything. He blushed lightly as he ran what he just thought through his head again. Did he really think that? Would he even consider…
"Earth to Inuyasha!" Miroku yelled at the side of his head, "we were wondering when you planned on returning from the fanciful world you were in. it must be good if your blushing." Miroku gave him a wily grin.
Inuyasha sputtered for a second then growled. "Sorry, but I wasn't dreaming about under my bed."
Miroku gave him a wide-eyed stare, then turned different shades of red. Inuyasha laughed loudly and the girls giggled behind their hands. Miroku grew angry and punched him in his arm, still blushing badly. "You stupid baka!"
"There's no point in denying it Miroku," Sango waggled her eyebrows, "everyone in this school knows about your ways."
"I do now!" Kagome cried and fell against the table top in a laughing heap. Sango leaned her forehead on Kagome's shoulder and joined her. Inuyasha was just about ready to fall off the bench in tears. Miroku only rested his head on the table in mortification.
They spent the rest of lunch eating and chatting. Kagome was told very amusing tales of Inuyasha's and Miroku's childhood. At one point, Kagome almost fell to the floor in a fit of laughter, but being the hanyou he was, Inuyasha caught her wrist before her head connected with the floor. Blushing lightly, Kagome thanked him and went back to the discussion at hand. But Sango and Miroku got to share glances before the talking started again.
Kagome half listened to them and laughed when needed. She couldn't stop thinking about when Inuyasha caught her. He was quick no doubt. But she remembered the feel of his hand on her wrist, how sure and strong it was, with a couple of calluses on his fingertips. She also noticed the claws. They were short but there. Don't get her wrong, she knew he wasn't human since the first day she met him. His eyes had tipped her off. But…he was different some how. He didn't feel like all the demons she had encountered before, like Kouga. He was somehow more…lively. He just didn't feel like an ordinary demon. She glanced at him, noting his posture and how he held himself. Nope, definitely not normal.
She was snapped out of her thoughts when the bell rang. Students gathered bags and threw out unfinished food, piling trays on top of garbage pins.
