CHAPTER 20: AT THE MALL
"Could Christmas come any sooner? I don't think Halloween is here yet," Kagome said sarcastically, sitting on a mall bench next to Sango sipping a fruit smoothie. People milled about, various bags in hands. Right now, she was staring at the store in front of her, an electronics store with pre Christmas decorations.
Sango snorted, "You mean it starts at Halloween? I thought it was sooner."
Kagome gave her a smile. She shifted the bag in her hand, a Victoria Secret red velvet robe for her mom. Good thing she got there early too, otherwise come next week, they would have been gone. At her feet was a bag from the store in front of her, a brand new Final Fantasy game in it for Souta. She had gone to the herbal store for her Jii-chan, a nice footbath salve in the bag. Now all she needed was Sango, Miroku, and Inuyasha. Sounded simpler than it was. Sango was sentimental, Miroku she had no idea, and Inuyasha wasn't much of a gift person.
Sango stretched out, back arching, empty smoothie cup tossed to the trash next to them. They were there with the boys, but the boys decided something important had come up and told them to wait here, using the smoothies as a bribe. Kagome jumped at it (come on who gives up a smoothie?), and dragged Sango with her. Now they sat bored, smoothies done on the mall bench.
"So," Sango strained as she stretched more, "think of a gift for me?"
Kagome glanced at her, "oh yeah, I have tons of ideas. I mean, you're my best friend and I know everything about you, so what is there that I cant get you?"
Sango gave her a flat look, " you don't know do you?"
Kagome lips gave her an innocent smile, "nope."
Sango sighed, "That's pretty sad Kagome."
Kagome threw her hands up and shook her head, "come on! Give me a break! I mean, what can I get you? I've known you too long."
Sango waved her hand at Kagome, "you'll think of something, I'm sure."
"You know what, just for that, you don't get anything." Sango snorted at her.
"Kagome, what re doing you doing to Sango?" Miroku marched up to them, hands on his hips mockingly. He looked like an angry dad.
"Um, no," Kagome stood, "Sango's the one making me feel guilty."
"Well," Sango stood and went up to Miroku and pouted, "she didn't get me a gift yet!"
Miroku gasped dramatically and wrapped his hands around Sango's shoulders and bowed his head. "How can this be? Two of the worlds best friends arguing cause one can't get a gift for the other!"
Kagome tucked her tongue in her cheek and waited a second. Then she took a deep breath and walked towards Miroku with a raised hand. "Just for that you get smacked."
"Hey! If anyone's smacking its me," Inuyasha strode up to them, grinning, form the other side of the mall. Kagome pouted as he took her hand.
"They're making fun of me!"
Inuyasha put on a fake scowl and turned to the smiling Miroku, "Miroku what are you doing? Are you trying to steal my job?"
Her friends laughed as Kagome's mouth hung open and she made a noise of offense. She folded her arms and stuck hand up, with a bit too much ghetto attitude. "Whatever!"
She then walked away from her chuckling friends and rude boyfriend. She got five steps in before a pair of arms wrapped around her waist and pulled her close to a warm body. Her angry pout turned to a smile, but she tried to maintain it.
"And where are you going?" Inuyasha growled in her ear, an involuntary shiver crossing her body.
"Tsk, like to get like Ms. Bossy over there, like a gift," Kagome did her best Beverly impersonation and jerked a thumb behind her. She heard a "hey!" before Inuyasha released her.
"Come on guys," Miroku laughed, "we need to get going, there's only three more weeks till Christmas."
"Oh woe is me!" Sango held a hand to her forehead and rolled her eyes back, "tis only so short a time! And with so much shopping!"
Miroku rolled his eyes at Sango while Kagome and Inuyasha snorted, and took her waist. She only followed so willingly, giving him a couple bags of hers, before she skipped ahead. She didn't miss his groan.
"Get use to it lacky, you have a girlfriend now," Sango chirped.
Miroku groaned again, "Just one of the things I regret about women. Dominance."
Inuyasha and Kagome laughed at his expense. Then Inuyasha turned to his girl.
"Will I suffer the same?"
Kagome snorted and sniffed. "Why? Looking forward to it?"
Inuyasha pursed his lips and pretended to consider, "um…no."
"Good for you, I can carry my own," Kagome skipped ahead, only to have her few bags yanked from her hand. She turned to a smirking Inuyasha.
He shrugged, "what? What boyfriend would I be if I didn't become your caddy?"
Kagome raised a brow, "a respectful one. But thanks anyways."
He came up and snaked his free arm around her waist. "No prob."
"Oh I forgot!" Sango piped up.
"No surprise there," Kagome didn't even need t turn to see her friend's glare at her back, threatening a painful torture.
"Anyways, as I was saying before I was insulted," Sango exaggerated, "I forgot to ask you guys, where did you go? Did you get gifts or something?"
Inuyasha looked to Miroku over his shoulder. Miroku grinned at his knowledge. "Well, we spilt after a minute, we wanted to go to two different places, but the concept was the same."
Kagome looked up adoringly into Inuyasha's eyes, giving him the sweetest look, knowing it would have no effect, "was it for us?"
He gasped, "Kagome! It wouldn't be Christmas if you knew which gift was yours!"
Sango sighed, "and yet she tries anyways."
"And who brought up the topic?" Kagome chirped.
"Whatever, come on I want to get to the sports store before we leave. Kohaku has been begging for a new mitt. His old one finally gave up the ghost." Sango tugged Miroku towards her destination, knowing the others would follow. Kagome and Inuyasha waited outside the huge sports store while Sango dragged her lacky in, bragging about her little brother's pre-baseball career. Just when it looked like they were going to be alone, fate stuck its hand in again.
"Kagome!" Kagome almost groaned on Inuyasha's chest as she heard Miru call her name. Damn it! She wanted to drag Inuyasha to the bathroom too. But no, she can't have fun. Kagome turned to find a nervous Miru stalking up to her.
"Hey Miru, are you ok-"
"Kagome? Can we talk?" Miru cut in.
Kagome gave Inuyasha a glance and noticed his frown. "Uh, sure, what about?"
Miru glanced down the mall, "not here, the bathrooms maybe?"
Kagome nodded only to have her hand yanked by Miru away from Inuyasha. She turned back, stumbling to keep up, and mouthed, `sorry' to Inuyasha. He only shrugged and leaned on the wall, waiting for his misfortunate friend and his girlfriend.
Kagome was tugged down the hall aways before Miru dragged her around the corner that led to the bathrooms, their sneakers squeaking on the tiles. She pulled Kagome in behind her and went to look around the column that would normally hide the bathroom from plain view. Kagome gave her a confused quirk of her brow.
"Miru, what's going on?"
Miru looked back to her and switched her gaze back to the hall, on the lookout, "we need to talk. I didn't want to tell Sango first, cause you know she can be kind of paranoid."
Kagome crossed her arms, "tell me about it, but seriously, what's this about?"
"Well, I want to tell you-" her eyes widened and she quickly ducked behind the pillar,
"Shit! She's heading this way! Hurry behind here!" Miru once again grabbed Kagome's wrist and tucked her behind the pillar, blocking her from easy view.
"Miru what are-"
"shh! Wait till she's gone!" Miru hissed, shushing Kagome with her hands. Irked, Kagome was about to speak when she damn felt like it, but then a girl spoke. She sounded familiar.
"Hold on, let me fix my shoe," it sounded like a few stopped and waited for their friend.
"So," another spoke, "Koharu, are you still, you know, mad about what happened?"
Kagome gasped a little. Wasn't Koharu that girl that Miroku use to date?
"Don't worry Sano," Koharu said with a bit of venom, "I'm not mad, just pissed. I mean, how could he? He said when I came back that we'd be together."
"But he's such a playboy, you knew that," a third spoke.
"You don't know Miroku like I did," Koharu defended, "when you're with him, he's so devoted. But then this bitch comes and take shim form me!"
"Dude, Koharu calm down," the second said uneasy.
"I will not!" Koharu spat, "he was mine and then she comes in with her tough attitude and blinds him with her disgusting beauty! Makes me sick. I tell you one of these days, I will have my way."
Miru and Kagome glanced at each other nervously and went back to the conversation.
"Um, anyways," the third piped up, "why don't we find Miru? She said she was heading this way."
The second gave fast agreement and they heard Koharu and her group walk off. They slowly came around the pillar, cautious in case Koharu wasn't that far off. Miru let out a breath and Kagome turned to her in disbelief.
"Miru, how long has this gone on?" Kagome hissed dangerously. No one insulted her friend!
Miru winced at her tone and gave her an uneasy look. "Ever since she got back. She only started really complaining a couple weeks ago. Kagome I'm worried, I've only known this girl for a short time but she's scaring me. I don't want her to hurt Sango or Miroku."
Kagome stared at the ground, hands on her hips and bit her lip. "I know Miru."
`What is up with that Koharu? It's like the end of the world for her. So what if Miroku dumped her, I'm sure he's done plenty of times. But how many times has he gone behind a not so girlfriend's back? I know he was a playboy and a lech but come on! He's not heartless. And what of Koharu? Is she serious?'
"Hey! There you are! Hi Miru!" Sango came jogging up to them, a gleeful smile gracing her face.
"Uh hey Sango," Miru gave her a nervous wave then turned, "I got to be going, see you later!"
Sango waved and watched Miru go. When she turned, Kagome had made her scowl disappear. But Inuyasha noticed.
"Come on guys, I'm tired. We'll order something at my house," Sango offered, linking her arm with a happy Miroku's. Inuyasha only nodded and prodded Kagome out of her thoughts when she didn't follow.
He gave her a worried look, "are you okay?"
She gave him a small smile, "its nothing."
But her eyes told him not to ask. He only furrowed his brows and put an arm around her shoulders, following an arguing Miroku and Sango about what they would order. Kagome bit her cheek. No it was nothing, but needed to be worried nonetheless. Besides she couldn't risk her friend's happiness, at any cost.
