CHAPTER 21: PRE-CHRISTMAS

Sango stood on the Higurashi porch, hands wringing their fingers between each other nervously. Right now, she didn't have the nerve to knock. Since when did she knock? She shook her head, but that was beside the point. Oh god, was she doing the right thing? Could she really ask Kagome about this? Would Kagome even have an answer? She couldn't ask her mom, she would be grounded till her next birthday. She couldn't ask her dad, cause then he'd kill any boy that walked into the house again. So that left Kagome and her mom. She gulped. Kagome was safer, she was her pal right? Her best friend since forever. And they could tell each other anything.

She raised a hand, took a breath and knocked. She waited nervously as she heard footsteps come to the door. When it opened, Sango put on a bright smile for Mrs. Higurashi. The woman raised a brow.

"Sango, what are you doing knocking on my door? I thought you lived here."

Sango giggled, "no, its Kagome that lives at my house."

"Really?" Mrs. Higurashi grinned and made way for Sango, "I could never tell with how much I see you."

Sango scratched the back of her head and laughed, "yeah well…is Kagome home?"

"Of course, cause she knows she can't leave till she finishes at least one subject. Go on up," the woman jerked her thumb to the stairs.

Sango nodded and took a few steps up. She yelled over her shoulder, "oh! And I might be staying for dinner!"

"That's because you live here!" she heard Kagome's mom yell back. She laughed the rest of the way up. She paused outside Kagome's door. She could hear some grumbling about "stupid quadratics". Good she was doing math, she'd be in a great mood to talk. Cause then she didn't have to do them. Sango took a breath. Okay, she could do this; Kagome was her best friend and didn't need to worry. Yet.

Sango barged in, and stopped when she saw Kagome had her old softball bat over her head, and giving her desk an evil glare.

"Kagome, I don't think practicing on your homework is going to improve your swing," Kagome turned to her and grinned.

"But it'll be fun!" Sango sighed and shook her head, but smiled nonetheless. "Okay, I think you need a break."

Sango walked up and pried the bat from Kagome's hands. Kagome pouted but sat down on her desk chair and waited patiently. Sango took Kagome's bed and stared at her toes. When sango noticed the frayed edge on the tip of her shoe, Kagome spoke.

"So I'm guessing this isn't a social call?" Sango smiled but glanced to the side, averting her gaze on Kagome's nightstand. Kagome rubbed her chin.

"Okay, now I'm worried. Usually when you want to bug me during homework, you're talking my ears off. But this quiet is getting to me. What's on your mind?"

"Its less than a week till Christmas," Sango said instead, her stomach doing nervous flips.

Kagome raised a brow, curious, "yes I know. And I still have to wrap gifts."

Sango looked up, "so you got me a gift after all?"

"Well duh!" Kagome exaggerated, "I mean, you are like, my best friend. And before you ask, I got something for Miroku and Inuyasha too. Don't worry its covered. You?"

"Well," Sango looked back to her shoe, "I got something for your mom, brother, grandfather, my family, and Inuyasha. But I'm not too sure about Miroku."

Kagome gave her dubious look, "you didn't get Miroku something!"

"I did!" Sango protested, "but I don't know if he'll like it!"

"And it is?" Kagome crossed her arms.

Sango looked down, pink tinting her cheeks. "Its something you can't wrap," she retorted. Kagome stared at her friend, eyeing her up and down. What is with her? She's blushing.

"Sango-chan, what did you get him?"

Sango sighed, "Let me ask you first, how does Inuyasha make you feel?"

Kagome blinked, "I thought that was quite obvious. He makes me feel special, both emotionally and physically, and my heart sighs at the sight of him. Not to mention I want to rip his clothes of, but I'm babbling."

"So your in love?" Sango looked up surprised.

Kagome blushed, "I'm not sure what it is."

Disheartened, Sango sighed again. But she asked, "How do you know you're in love?"

Kagome was taken aback by the question, and blinked. Okay, what happened? Did they fight? "Um, well…I guess you just know. Or it could be the funny feeling in your chest whenever you think about them, or are with them. Or the thought of them leaving that makes you cry. Sango, what's this about?"

Sango bit her lip, "I think…I think…ithinkI'minlovewithmiroku."

Once again, Kagome blinked. Then she jumped up for joy and squealed. "Oh my god! Congrats san! Wait, are you sure?"

"I don't know, its so confusing," Sango could feel hot tears rising. Kagome saw her dilemma and sat next to her in the bed, putting arm around her. She rubbed her back as Sango choked back the tears.

"Its okay san-chan, I'm sure you'll figure it out." Kagome thought for a second, then gasped, "okay, I have a way to test your theory."

"You do?" Sango sniffed.

"Yeah I read it in some article about relationships. Its three simple questions, that tells you all. Okay, lets see if I remember," Kagome bit her lip, then smiled, "okay, question one, how does he make you feel?"

"I don't understand…"Sango shook her head.

"Its simple, tell me, how does he make you feel? Don't forget physically too."

Sango blushed red; "uh…well…he makes me happy, and crazy at the same time. He's frustrating sometimes. But he can be so sweet too, and is very considerate of me. Um…and um…well, when he touches me…I …I like it. A lot. I mean, it drives me insane if he just stops suddenly. Oh god, Kagome, I want him. I've never wanted somebody before."

"Don't worry, its normal, trust me," Kagome grinned, "question two, he makes you happy?"

"Yeah definitely," Sango gave a watery laugh, "he's just so…so. He's so everything sometimes. It makes me want to squeeze him sometimes its so cute."

Kagome laughed, "I'm sure Miroku would love to hear that." Sango's brows crossed for a second, but she blushed deeper as she got the pun.

"Okay, final question. How do you see your life without him?" and here Sango paused.

She stared at her feet. How does she see herself without her Miroku? She never thought about it, it was like he was always there. Like they were always together. She bit her lips. What would life be like with out Miroku? Without his laughter, his smile, his concern and loving gaze her? Without his comfortable arms, his handsome face, and his perverted humor? Her lip trembled. She knew what it'd be like. Nothing. It would be nothing.

She put her hands in her face and let out a dry breath, "oh my god, Kagome…I am in love with him. I love Miroku!"

Sango let out a sob of confusion, therefore confusing Kagome. Kagome quickly wrapped her in a warm hug. Sango let a few tears fall, her eyes darting everywhere and nowhere. How could she have not known? How did it get past her? She was so careful with her emotions, made sure she didn't get attached to guys in case they dumped her. But now, she was in love with Miroku, some one you'd least expect. He was the school playboy, the local pervert and lecher. How could she fall for him like all the other girls? She stiffened. No this wasn't like the other girls. The other girls were infatuated, fanciful. But she, Sango Taijiya, was undoubtedly in love with Miroku Houshi. And she felt great.

"Are you okay?" Kagome whispered as she felt sango stiffen and sit up.

"Yeah I'm good," she let out a laugh, "can you believe this? Me, in love with someone. Especially with Miroku."

"Actually I could," Kagome smiled as her friend smiled at her. Sango sighed happily. Now that she was apt that, she could now move on with her plans. It just made a bit simpler. But just a bit.

"Wait a minute!" Kagome put her hand s on her hips, not easy when your sitting, "you still haven't told me what you got him!"

Sango giggled and got up to walk out. "Just wait and see."

"No fair! Sango get back here!" when Sango made a break for the door, Kagome sped after her. She never caught her, but by the time the girls ran out of breath, they were laughing madly. Then Souta decided it was fun to chase them around with a spider in his hand.

"So did your order come in?" Inuyasha asked over the phone. Mean while, he was fingering the long velvet box that had arrived yesterday, waiting to be wrapped.

"Sure did. I hope she likes it," Miroku answered, carefully folding the gold paper over his smaller box, making sure it didn't bend the wrong way. He smiled when it came out perfect.

"What girl wouldn't? I mean come on, you love the girl don't you?" Inuyasha asked distractingly.

Miroku almost ripped the corner he was folding. Almost. He put it down and held the phone better. "How do you know?"

Inuyasha snorted, "dude, I've known you longer than anyone. I've seen you with more girls than a pimp, and each one made no difference to you. But when you first asked Sango out, you were nervous; I could smell it on you. And that struck me as strange seeing you never were before. And the fact that you're more lovey dovey now than anytime before really tipped me off. So get over yourself man, its obvious."

Miroku sighed, and ran a hand through his hair. He never thought he gave himself away easily. But it was getting harder to control himself since he admitted to himself, I mean really admitted it, that he was indeed in love with Sango. All those years, all the slaps and hits and threats had never diminished it. It only grew.

"Well," Inuyasha interrupted his moment, "I got to go, I have to wrap Kagome's present."

Miroku grinned, "Gee, I wonder of the thanks you'll get will be better than her birthday."

He couldn't hear Inuyasha blush, but he heard the smirk in his voice, "I'm counting on it. See ya later."

"Bye," Miroku pressed the phone off and tossed it on his bed. He sat and looked around. Though his room wasn't quite as large as Inuyasha's, it was till pretty big. The king bed took most of the room, but there was still space for a desk and PC, nightstands, and a mounted stereo on his wall. Maroon carpet stretched to every corner, but stopped at the door to his bathroom, a mid-night blue, ivory and gold tiled heaven with a sunken in tub. His walk in closet was next to that, cream-colored walls continuing into it. The four posts on his bed were mahogany, with dark red drapes hanging, matching his cream and blood red bedspread. But like normal teenage boys, clothes were everywhere and the usual girl posters hung on his walls. But he contemplated taking them down. None of them compared to Sango.

He sighed again. Sango. She had certainly been surprised by how well off he was. Though it wasn't as much as Inuyasha's family, it was still a lot. Ever since Mushin had taken him in, he tried to ignore the money, but it was just too much fun spending it. And so came his pimping years. But then Sango walked in the door to Mrs. Guchiki's class in seventh grade. Even with his undeveloped body, Miroku had felt his heart stop at that moment. But of course, with his already old habits, it had taken a while for him to actually approach her. Well, beside the fact she left him eating dirt every time he copped an over aged feel. But now, everything was different. He didn't care about his bank account, or the models he once drooled over. Cause whenever he looked at them, they faded and showed Sango.

Finishing his wrapping, Miroku imagined Sango's reaction to his present. Her eyes would sparkle with surprise, and tears of happiness would rise into her beautiful maroon orbs, magnifying them. And he would lose himself in them, willingly. He sighed in content as he pulled the bow taunt, and carefully put it on his shelf. Yes siree, life was good. Especially if you were in love with Sango Taijiya, the most beautiful vibrant girl in the whole world.
