CHAPTER 48: WAKE UP AND MAKE UP
It was between floating and swimming, she couldn't really tell. She was aware of the fact that she was doing it though. It was almost exciting, this feeling. You floated, feeling lighter than anything, yet you stayed in what seemed one place, never turning, or spinning. You're just…there. In a world of dark, of muffled sounds and indistinguishable feelings. The dark didn't bother her, it was peaceful, easy on her mind.
But something was different now, something…lifting. Yeah, that was the word. She felt as being lifted, invisible hands pushing her up to unknown darkness. She didn't struggled, but she didn't want to leave the dark place either. She wanted to voice her protest, but her mouth remained still, and no sounds came from her throat. The hands pushing her felt more real, more solid, and she found they weren't hands, but something that laid under her. It was no longer dark, but a red light spread before her vision, becoming more intense as she went higher. She could hear her heart beating, and her lungs fill with air, then release it. Her brows furrowed as the tingling feeling in the back of her head started, like little feelers wiggling in her skull. The feeling started in her lower region too, focusing on her left leg and stomach as she roused even more. She saw nothing but red, but realized what it really was. It was her eyelids, shut off to the world.
Kagome groaned as the pain in her head intensified and she wanted desperately to life a hand to cradle her head. But her limbs remained numb, frozen at her side. Speaking of which, there was something on her right side, keeping her hand nice and toasty, also making it feel numb, it having fallen asleep some time ago. For the first time in eight days, Kagome opened her eyes.
The pain in her head increased as she was bombarded with light right over her bed, and she turned away as best she could, wincing as the nettles ebbed on her brain. Where the hell was she? And why was it so…white? She heard beeping, and tilted her head up some, seeing a machine that had a bumpy green line across the screen. A heart monitor? What was that-oh wait, that was it. She was in a hospital.
Why?
She turned her head the other way, eyes scanning the empty room as she went. There was a bathroom right across from her bed, she supposed, her feet poking up from the cotton blanket. Her left leg was raised, connected to the ceiling, covered in white plaster. She broke it?
She turned her head all the way, and came in contact with colors, petals everywhere. She frowned. What were flowers doing here? And a lot at the look of things. She saw some cards, but didn't have the focus to see what they said. She tried moving her right arm again to grab one, but found she couldn't move it. She looked down. Her eyes softened. A white head was laying on top of her hand, which was gripped by a strong clawed hand. The dog-ears atop his head twitched slightly, and she got the urge to do something naughty. A small smile crept onto her face, and Kagome took her other hand and reached, making sure not to twist her waist. Ever so gently, she wrapped her fingers over one furry ear and rubbed her thumb over the inside. It twitched in her hand, but soon submitted to the comforting touch, a contented growl flowing from his throat. She wanted to giggle as she pressed his head closer to her hand, and just up and laid his head down on to her lap, nuzzling his nose into her belly. Her other hand free now, she took the other ear and started rubbing, and his growl went to purr, vibrating in his chest. The soothing action made her head dull, and she could stay that way forever.
Inuyasha cracked his eye open, hazy and clouded with pleasure, the gold darkened to a rusted amber, and through his haze, he saw his head had moved to lay on Kagome. He opened his other eye. Come to think of it, how was he feeling this warm sensation coming from his head? He almost melted when a fingernail scratched at the base of one ear. Wait. Wait a damn minute.
Inuyasha's head snapped up, surprising Kagome a little and he turned his head to some in contact with warm chocolate orbs smiling into his. He gasped. "Kagome! You're awake!"
"Well yeah," she rasped, her voice rusty from misuse, and let her hands relax at her sides. "How else was I scratching your ears?"
Inuyasha blushed, but chose to ignore the comment. He stood and took her hand again, rubbing his cheek over the back of it, "god it's good to hear your voice again…"
She wanted to giggle, but found her throat was scratchy and thick, like sandpaper. She licked her dry lips, "hey Inu…I'm thirsty."
He looked up and nodded, stepping over to the tray at the end of her bed where a pitcher of water was set with some cups. He grabbed a straw and poured the cool liquid into a cup, Kagome's eyes following with longing. God she was thirsty. He came back over and presented the cup, and she instantly latched onto the straw, downing half the cup in one gulp. When she rested back down, her throat was cool and wet again, and she could talk perfectly. He set the cup down and took her hand again. She raised a brow. Not that she minded all the attention, but what was she doing here?
"Hey Inuyasha," she said softly, and a pair of soft gold eyes met hers, "why am I in the hospital?"
She saw those same eyes cloud with guilt and a deep misery, and he looked away as he squeezed her hand tighter. She squeezed back for encouragement. He opened his mouth a few times, but what he wanted to say never came out right, and he'd close it again. She tilted her head, the movement catching his eye, and he couldn't help smiling at the cute movement. She smiled back weakly. "You were in a car accident Kags…truck plowed right into you."
Her eyes went wide with surprise and she sat up straighter, gritting her teeth as the movement went to her head. He shook his head and pushed her back down. "Doc says not to move too much, you got hit pretty bad."
She nodded feebly and welcomed the relief from her throbbing head. He turned and sat on the edge of her bed, idly playing with her fingers while staring at them. She took in his profile, brows notching in worry at the dark circles under his eyes. His hair was a bit messy too, and he wore nothing but sweats and a wife beater. Why was he so bad? She was the one hit by a truck right? Wait, how long has she been here?
"Inuyasha, how long ago was that?" she asked quietly, and he closed his tired eyes.
"Little more than a week. You've been asleep the whole time." Inuyasha saw her brows shoot up and her mouth opened a little, but she nodded. His heart pumped warmly. It was so good to see her eyes again, lit with life.
But they soon clouded, and she looked away. Just looking at him brought it back. She found it odd that one thing, one detail would bring the memories back. It was the fact that he looked stressed was what reminded her that he looked almost the exact same way when…when she had tried to talk to him. But he had pushed her away, cause he thought she broke his heart. But she hadn't, she talked to Sango, things were made clear.
Kagome collapsed unto her bed, her torso and head in pain, slipping into the darkness…
"You don't remember anything from the party?…Kagome you broke up with Inuyasha…"
"My necklace! …I don't remember anything!…tell me he still cares!"
"…You came, broke my fucking heart to pieces…get out of my house, get out of my face, and get the fuck out of my life."
"I didn't do anything…"
BUUUUUUUUUUR!!! BUUUUUUUUUR!!!
Kagome wasn't aware of the tears sliding down her face till one slid down her neck, leaving an icy trail in its wake. She sniffed back more and quickly went to wipe away the ones that had escaped. Inuyasha looked up from his playing and his face contorted to shame and sadness as he saw her trying to wipe away her heartbreak. He reached over and pushed aside her hand, framing her face gently into both his own, his thumbs taking care of any stray tears that appeared. She gripped onto his wrists, and her lips trembled miserably. She didn't want to cry, not when this was all her, or supposedly her fault. He shouldn't be here, trying to comfort her, not after what happened. That brought on more tears, and sobs racked her shoulders. Inuyasha saw this and leaned down to kiss her forehead, wrapping his arms around her the best he could when her sobs came out pathetic mewls.
She reached up and held desperately onto his back, burying her face into his chest, pouring everything she had onto him. He felt the moisture dampen his skin, and just buried his nose into her dark locks, stroking her back soothingly. Oh he wished he could take it all away, but try as he might, he could never fully do it. He heard her sobs become hoarse as they seared her throat, and he took to rocking her gently, shushing her and whispering endearments into her ear.
"I'm so sorry," she moaned, muffled by his chest, and he shook his head, "no, I'm s-sorry, I n-never did-"
"No, no…" he whispered, holding her tighter still, "it was never your fault, it was mine. You never did anything, nothing, just please…stop crying for me, smile at me, don't cry."
She pulled away, hiccuping and sniffling, and she looked up into his face and smoothed a hand over his cheek. He leaned into her touch and turned his head to kiss her palm, gazing upon with warm and caring eyes.
"Inuyasha," she breathed and bit her lip, "about what happened…"
He shook his head and gathered her chilled hands into his own. "No, I had no right to say those things to you. I know what happened Kagome, you did nothing wrong. I'm just so happy you're alive…when I heard…I thought-Jesus I don't know what I would have done."
Kagome pressed her lips together and brought their hands up to her lips, kissing his knuckles, "I thought I lost you."
He smiled warmly and leaned down, rubbing noses gently together, "never…I love you Kagome, always."
She suppressed fresh tears, "I love you too."
Inuyasha closed his eyes and brought his lips down in a chaste kiss, caressing her warm lips with his own, tracing his tongue over them asking for entrance. She opened willingly, loving the feel of his tongue massaging her own, the feel of his fangs nipping at her lip. Despite her pain, she felt the beginning signs of arousal slowly curling inside of her, and she pulled away regretfully, groaning in protest.
He cocked a brow at her, and she let out a dry laugh, "we have a problem…"
His lips tugged a little, "and that would be?"
She bit back on her giggles, "almost the entire half of my lower body is in a cast."
He blinked. She bit down on her grin. Neither stopped the fit of giggles that over took them.
&---------------------------------------&
"You guys stop!! You can fuss over me when I'm actually a vegetable!"
The group of teenagers looked at Kagome, all crowding around her bed. Sango huffed and crossed her arms, and Miroku and Inuyasha exchanged `that's not funny' looks with Kagome. She snorted, and shifted the make her butt more comfortable. These hospital beds are really stiff when you're sitting on them. Man, all she had to say was that her butt was numb and Sango freaks out, which in turn made Miroku panic, which irritated the hell out of Inuyasha. But Sango couldn't stay mad long.
"Hey, I have a right as you're best friend to fuss over you whenever I want! And this little accident just improves my fussing tenfold!" Sango retorted, sitting on the other side of the bed that Inuyasha was on. Miroku took a chair across from her. Kagome pouted like a little kid and sent her a glare.
"I'm not a total handicap, and besides, Inuyasha is bad enough, I don't need you seeing to my every need." She replied. Inuyasha flattened his ears.
"I don't hear you complaining when I'm coming to your every beck and call," he said annoyed, and she just gave him a comical bright smile, and blew him a kiss.
"Don't be a baby my slave-I mean Inuyasha," she giggled when he growled lightly, giving her a slightly threatening glare. She blinked at him. Man, painkillers are SO cool. She didn't feel a thing, whether that was good or bad has yet to be seen. But she looked past him and saw a little blue box.
Kagome pointed at the nightstand, "okay, I've been awake for a good few days now, and how come I haven't seen that?"
Inuyasha looked behind him, and reached over for the box, bringing it closer for her. "Oh yeah, the thing that Sesshomaru wanted to give you."
"Sessy-chan?" Kagome said surprised, and he couldn't stop the grin that spread over his face. Kagome was funny when she was half drugged, and he would love to see Sessy-chan's reaction to his new nickname. He sobered a bit. If only Sesshomaru hadn't made him swear…He nodded and handed her the box. She clapped happily and took the top of the small box easily, but gasped and squealed. "He fixed it!"
Inuyasha raised a brow, but smiled when Kagome pulled out the locket, the gold chain fixed and polished. He saw her struggled with the clasp, squinting at it, but he sighed and took it from her. She pouted, but held her hair up when he unclasped it, bringing around her neck from the front. She let her hair fall when the lightweight rested on her neck, and gave Inuyasha quick peck before he pulled away. He returned it, but a more heated one this time. She rested her hands in her face childishly.
"We have got to figure something out! I'm gonna go crazy if I have to spend the next six months like this," she moaned, and pulled at her hair. He only laughed.
"Hey wait," Miroku said, picking up the little box, "there's something else."
Miroku took out a piece of folded paper and read the little line of print. "'Kagome, I thought you might like this fixed', yeah yeah, blah blah, we know Sesshomaru…oh what's this? `There's something else here for you, look under the padding'."
Sango nodded, "that's Sesshomaru for you, being all mysterious."
Miroku shook his head and lifted the padding the necklace had rested on, but paused, eyes going wide. Kagome leaned forward towards him. "What is it?"
Miroku grinned as he lifted a…a car key from the box, "I think Sessy-chan just got you a new BMW."
Kagome's jaw dropped. Inuyasha counted back in his head. 3…2…1…
"OH MY GOD!!!!!"
