Chapter Three

The soft whisper of the wind rustled the grassy field near Murk woods. Kagome was bathed by the light of the moon, her heart racing. She now knew the moment of truth was coming as he approached. Her dream lover came forth with slow unhurried movements as she stood, waiting. They embraced and shared a quiet moment of enveloping content.

Kagome pulled back first; she leaned into the wind, allowing her hair to dance like blue black silk in the breeze. Once again she tried to discern his face; anything to attach to reality, to those haunting amber eyes, none came. Posing the same question as she always did, “Who are you?”, Kagome held her breath.

Slowly, the apparition with amber eyes leaned forward, closing the distance betwixt their lips. Passion, fire, seduction, they ignited, they burned within the enthralling mating of pedal soft appendages. Colors exploded behind Kagome’s eyelids and tongues of fire licked at her skin, laving her to the point of pre-incineration. What seemed like mere moments passed in the space of much time and they eased the lava coursing through their incited veins. The inferno of soul to soul connection was reigned in, a tight lease contracting with pure will power alone.

Heart surging with emotion, Kagome attempted to read the message of his lips pressed against hers firmly. “My name is In-”. Once again he came to an abrupt halt then disappeared with a frustrated air succeeding him.

Gasping for air in her smoldering lungs, Kagome was compelled into an upright position, her hand pressing her breast bone in a desperate attempt to quell her aching need, the fire in the pit of her stomach slowly fading into a dull flame. Her head was pounding without comprehension, her hands flew to either side of her head and she clutched it unconsciously. Moreover, Kagome’s eyes were searing with pain from held back tears, ‘So close’.

Frustration superfluous in her bloodstream, she stomped over to the open bathroom door, marched over to the medicine cabinet and yanked it open ferociously. Popping an Advil and downing two glasses of tap water, Kagome slid to the floor. Always at the moment of revelation he broke off and shimmered out of sight in the infuriating habit of his.

The light switch to the bathroom was flipped on, and Miroku stuck his head in the door. Kagome had been in such a foul mood she had neglected to close the door all the way and the night light protruding from one of the sea green walls had seemed quite enough on her weary eyes.

“You okay, Kag?” Miroku took a seat next to her, beside the pedestal sink.

“Bad dream.” She murmured her reply, the stupid OTC painkiller slow to act. She hoped he’d leave it at that, but this was the real world and her wishes seemed to go unheeded.

“Tell me about it.” A simple request meant to help her, but Kagome wasn’t in the mood for share time.

“I’d prefer to go back to bed, Miro. No offense, but something’s are too private.” She heard him sight and knew that the speech was coming.

“The unheard cries hurt the heart most. Family is the solid stability of all life, I am your family. We grew as naturally together as the Sakura trees, both of the same family. Trust is not an on and off switch, it is a gift given and received. Tell me what ails you?” He could be so like grandpa sometimes.

“Even the smallest Sakura tree must grow its own way and in its own time, unencumbered of pressure. It must sometimes writhe on its own before it may blossom. Lack of trust is not the issue of the wounded, but need for self-strength.” Kagome grew up around the beloved old man too.

Miroku shook his head in reply before kissing her forehead and striding from the room. Kagome soon followed, determined to sleep longer.

The following morning, Kagome was lying face up on her plush bed, eyes closed, absorbing the feel of morning light on her face. She had had a rough time of falling into any kind of sleep. For the first time in two years she had a nightmare, her dream man had not shown up throwing her into the old pattern of dreaming.

She had run, fast and hard, pumping her legs to avoid the dark figure shadowing her life, the evil chuckle admitting from him made her shiver, her conscious body taking on the same action. When she had finally reached a clearing from the nightmare’s woods, Kagome had seen a well and pitched herself over the side, down into the depths of uncertainty, her body fell into an all consuming light and she thanked hard against something.

Kagome had jerked awake, realizing she had hit the floor; she climbed back into bed and laid there, not sleeping, just absorbing the light of the dawn.

KNOCK! KNOCK! “Kagome, are you up?”

“Not quite. I’m not sure I’ll be going to class; just leave me some orange juice, I’ll be fine.” Kagome heard Kencha’s retreating footfalls and rolled over onto her stomach, preparing to doze off.

KNOCK! KNOCK! “Hey, Kag?” It was Miroku, his voice concerned.

“What?” Kagome’s voice was muffled by her body pillow.

“Are you okay?” Kagome sighed and got up, going to the door she opened the locks and turned the knob.

“I’m fine. Tired. That’s all.” At Miroku’s doubtful and worried expression Kagome was prompted to go on. “Really. Look do you want to go to breakfast?” Might as well get up, or he’d just continue to fuss, probably miss all his courses, too.

“Sure. Why don’t we invite Sango, too?” He tried to look uninterested and casual. When that look failed, he gave her the most pathetic forlorn, love struck, puppy eyes Kagome had ever seen.

“Why not?” ‘So much for relaxing’, Kagome thought. Snatching the cordless from the blue cradle on her nightstand, Kagome dialed Sango’s number, she picked up on the third ring.

“Hello?” Sango sounded as if she had still been sleeping.

“Sango? Hey, you awake yet?”

“No.”

“Want to go to breakfast? Miroku’s paying.” A soft “what” was heard from Kagome’s end.

“IHOP?”

“You got it. Twenty minutes?”

“Thirty.”

“Okay. We’ll be there.”

“OK.”

Kagome hung up the phone and smacked Miroku in the forehead with the heel of her palm.

“What was that for?!” Kagome mumbled something under breath that sounded like ‘bakas, sleep, and breakfast’, as she walked the short distance to her bathroom, closing the door and starting a shower.

Thirty minutes later, the three were seated at a window booth inside IHOP. Kagome was chowin’ down on strawberry french toast and a vanilla shake; meanwhile, Sango and Miroku were catching each others eyes over short stacks, and coffee.

“So Kag-” Sango directed her gaze to her good friend, “-has Inuyasha done anything malicious, yet?” Miroku’s gaze snapped to his cousin.

“Who? And why would they?” Sango peered over at him momentarily.

“Inuyasha. Him and Kagome have a love-hate relationship going on.”

“Love-hate what? Sango if anything it’s a long standing ego-crushing contest. Relationship and love have no place in this.” Kagome had been so quick to answer some powered-sugar had been blown up onto her nose from the breath she released. Sango gave her a skeptical glance before going into detail of passed Kagome-Inuyasha “ego-crushing”.

The chime to IHOP was heard, and then Kagome tensed. Kouga. Kouga Matsumi, first class jock, complete hottie, and certified jerk. He had a confident swagger to his stride as he made a line for Kagome’s booth.

“How’s my woman?” Kagome had the urge to smack him; they had gone out on one date and the imbecile thought he owned her.

“Kouga…Stop…Calling…Me….That!” She stressed every syllable and stretched out the distance between the words.

“Okay, baby.” Kagome pinched the bridge of her nose putting much needed pressure on her nasal cavity. When she opened her closed eyes, Kouga’s face was approximately two inches from hers. She blushed when he leaned in further and licked the sugar off her nose. Kagome was too flustered to do anything but stare; That fact didn’t stop Miroku from shoving him away to a more comfortable proximity.

“Who the hell are you?” Kagome snapped back to reality when she heard Miroku curse at Kouga; he never cursed unless he was deeply offended, or felt others were.

“Kagome’s boyfriend. Who the fuck are you?”

“Her cousin, and I think it best you leave.” Kouga seemed taken back; when Kagome didn’t invite him to stay he said he’d be back another time, and left.

“Go Miroku.” Sango was giving him a look of deep admiration, and he blushed under the attention. “That wasn’t Kagome’s boyfriend by the way. That was Kouga Matsumi, a longtime player, and stalker to many, especially Kags here.”

“He gives you anymore problems, Kagome, and I’ll gladly put aside my monk vows of no violence, and beat him into the ground where worms belong.” Kagome nodded while checking her phone for the time.

“Shoot. I’ve got to go if I want to make it back for class.”

“Bye.” Sango and Miroku waved her off.

“So, Sango, what do you say to dinner?” Miroku was mesmerized by her deep soulful eyes.

“I thought monks were celibate?”

“Well I was five when I took the vow and I’m not technically in a monastery.”

“No grouping?”

“No grouping.” Miroku held his hands up.

“Okay, then pick me up at nine. Friday.” Miroku’s face lit up.

“Seriously?”

“Yes.”

Kagome made it to class, again last, but this time chose to sit off to the side, on one of the steps toward the teachers podium. Professor Sykes charged in and started to speak in quick decisive commands.

“Okay get out you notes. Take this down. We will be doing a partnered assignment. I will pair you. Stand and go to the person I list you with.” Kagome stood reluctant to do anything partnered, academically, she was a loner.

“Ryotso, Brown. Myume, Tain. Chojii, Taka. Higurashi-” The professor stopped, realizing there was a flaw in his partnering, Kagome’s partner, Megumi Onisue, dropped the course. “-Higurashi take on Inuyasha. He would’ve been the odd man out.” The class hummed at this tidbit of gossip, the pair notorious enemies.

Now totally reluctant, Kagome shuffled over to Inuyasha’s side. Both groaned when they heard the assignment.

“Create a fifty-five page paper on each others historical background and include a diagram of the family tree in the appendix. This paper should include all known love, royalty, and legal entanglements; known feuds, land ownership deeds, and history of the land. Tie this to the person you see before you, then on the last five pages write how you saw them when you started, and how you see them now. Welcome to sophomore year, people. This is due in six weeks everyone. For those of you with poor math skills, that is a month and a half from now. Class dismissed.”

Everyone took off right away, ready to begin the tedious, and meticulous project. Inuyasha blew off Kagome and she him. They both knew it was inevitable, they would have to face one another, but that could be postponed until they had the easy factual stuff done.

Kagome blew out a breath, “What a day.”
