Chapter Five

They stared at one another, both frozen, not sure what to say. Kagome blinked repeatedly, while Inuyasha stared without a twitch. “How is this possible?” Kagome was the first to break the thick silence. Emotions were roiling around inside of her, but she didn’t know what to say.

“I don’t know. It was YOU though, so it must be possible.” Kagome didn’t like the way he said ‘you’, as if she were an object, or term for something unpleasant.

“How did we not know?” Inuyasha shook his head, he was still trying to wrap his mind around the idea that this girl was his dream woman, the person that had been his salvation for so long. He had met her right after his mother passed on, she died in a terrible gang fight; she had been coming out of the market a few blocks from their home, and was shot when two rivals faced one another in a shoot out. He’d been devastated, but that night, and every night since he had met the one woman he knew to be his mate, in his dreams.

“Why couldn’t I see you?” Kagome was whispering to herself, working out the puzzle pieces, and trying not to break down into a hysterical fit. How could it be Inuyasha, the boy who plagued her every waking moment?

“I don’t know. I couldn’t see you either, only your eyes. I heard your voice, but saw only your eyes, and felt…” He blushed as he trailed off, remembering the more intimate moments they had shared.

“And you couldn’t connect the dots that my voice, and the dream me had the same voice? I couldn’t hear you, or I surely would have know.” She had that superior tone that just grated on his nerves, and he just gave her a hard stare.

“And how many people do you know with golden eyes?” His voice dripped with venom. He couldn’t really understand his emotions, one moment he was calmly discussing something, then as was the usual with her, he was pissed off beyond belief.

“Two.” Kagome avoided his eyes; how had she not known? Now that she thought about his eyes, and his brother’s, were the only ones who were golden. His confidence during the day even preceded him at night, when he took her in his arms and…well, he was definitely confident then, too.

“I suppose Sesshomaru does seem the type to do what we did?” The moment the words left him, he blushed. He never blushed, but right now it seemed an impossibility not to.

“No.” Kagome had no idea where they went from here. How was she supposed to love the guy who treated her like a walking punch line? How was she supposed to hate the man who had eased the agony inside of her for as long as it had existed? This was all so confusing. “Where do we go from here? We can’t pretend that this never happened.” Kagome looked up, peering into his eyes. Those eyes.

“I don’t know. In our dreams we didn’t…talk much, but we were…friends. I didn’t know I was with the Bitch Higurashi.” Inuyasha wanted to snatch the words back as soon as he said them, but it was too late.

“The Bitch Higurashi? Now you listen hear, prick, I don’t know why the fuck you treat me the way you do, but I didn’t start this. If anyone’s a bitch, it’s you! I don’t even know how I could have…liked you in our dreams! Let’s just forget this. Stay the fuck out of me dreams!” Kagome got up to storm out, but Inuyasha snatched at her arm, then let go just as quickly as Kagome’s aura flared and hot blue energy enveloped her, singeing his hand.

“Bitch! You did more then like me, AND you know what?”

“What?”

“It was completely your fault for all this. You and your snooty attitude, and you-are-beneath-me glances! You want to forget this get gone!” Inuyasha ruthlessly shoved her out the door, and slammed it shut in her face.

Kagome stared at the door in shock for a moment, before shrieking and stomping her way out of the frat house. She marched across campus and threw herself down on the nearest bench. No one was around so she didn’t bother to hid her anger, and tears. She cried while cursing him, and cried while mourning him. How could someone she loved so much hurt her so bad.

Her cell phone, which she had clipped to her side, went off about forty minutes into her recovery stage, and she answered it. “Hello?”

“Kagome?” It was her dad. Why he was calling she didn’t know, he never did. He was too wrapped up in his business to bother with her. She sighed silently, and sat up straighter, trying to get ready for whatever bomb he was going to drop.

“Hi dad. How are you?” Kagome didn’t really care how he was, she just wanted this day to be over.

“I’m fine. I assume you are well?” He did the pleasantries bit before getting down to the real reason he called. “Listen Kagome, the company’s in trouble. Certain things have been going on, and my security, and back up teams have been unable to get it under control. In the clause you signed for the money agreement we made about your college it states that under any circumstance where the company may be in jeopardy you were to return. Do you remember that?”

Kagome remembered that alright. She hadn’t been allowed to leave for college unless she had signed off on a contract for the money from her parents. She had been seventeen, and legally still under her parents care, therefore if she wanted to make it to her first semester at TU she had to sign the contract for the money, and agree to help, protect, and take over Higurashi Corp.

Kagome had hated them for it for her entire freshman year, but was finally accepting that the company would be fine, and the contract wouldn’t come into play until she was old enough to deal with it. “I remember.”

“Good. We’ll see you in a week; we’re giving you time to pull out of college, and pack up. Settle your life there because you’re needed her.” Kagome pulled the phone away from her ear, stared at it, then put it back when she heard her father’s muffled voice.

“You’ll be leaving on Saturday at five A.M., and Nara-san will be picking you up from the airport. Love you dear, see you soon.” He hung up.

Kagome lowered the phone to her lap, gazed down at it, contemplated what he had said, then hurled it with all her strength to the nearest wall, and watched as it shattered. She was going to leave everything that meant something to her because she was legally bound by a contract she had to sign at seventeen, then eighteen, and soon she would be doing so again.

Did fate hate her? Did she have a target painted on her forehead and ass? Didn’t the first blow to her head hurt her enough? Did she really need that second shot to the rear? Kagome felt like crying again, but buried it. No more tears. She was going back to family, and she couldn’t stop it. She would have to kiss Miroku goodbye, tell Kencha she could have her room, acknowledge Sango’s tears, wave off her professors, and leave behind the one guy that had kept her on her toes during the day, and on the brink of reality during her dreams.

When she made it back to her dorm room, Kagome explained everything to Kencha, Miroku was mysteriously gone. Kencha, surprisingly burst into tears, threatened everything holy, and then calmed down enough to hug Kagome, and say she’d miss her. Kagome had smiled, hugged her promised to email, and come visit, if she could get away.

Eventually she had gone into her room, and began to pack. By the time Miroku was home she was three fourths of the way done, and trying to figure out how to tell him goodbye. He might even come back with her, but she already had adamant arguments on why he should stay, and the fact that it would be silly to relocated right after settling in.

“Hey Kags?” He knocked on the door, and walked in with a goofy smile on, it was late, but he knew she was up. Miroku looked around, and saw the packed boxes. His smile, which had been sunnier than ever, faded into a deep-seated frown. “What’s up?”

Kagome took a seat on her bed, and wondered if she should tell him with Sango around, maybe it would be easier, then decided against it, he might cry. “I have news. Dad called.” His face fell, he knew how much Kagome disliked her father. “The company is in trouble, and I have to leave.” She kept her face a façade of cool, calm, acceptance.

“WHAT?” Miroku freaked out, he started ranting about the law, and fucking contracts, and ’how can he do this’, and then he started in with the ’I’m going with you’ thing, and Kagome brought him to an abrupt halt.

“Miroku, you can’t come with me. You have a life here, and school, and Sango, and you just moved here. I’m fine, and I lived with the man for most of my life; I know the business world, and it would do you no good. I’m going to try to see if I can fix this by the end of the semester, and then reenroll, hopefully.” She hoped he wouldn’t do something stupid. Her fingers were crossed.

“You know this was their plan all along. Higurashi-sama is a spiteful bastard, who never intended his heir to live a life apart from him. He let you finish out freshman year because of your mom, and now he wants you back. It was a trick, a way to make your freedom seem real, only to yank you back, and destroy it all, making you totally dependant on the company. Freshman year was a mercy for your grandfather.” Kagome’s face fell, and she looked cold. Miroku saw his mistake immediately.

“Don’t. I’m leaving. Stay, live. I’m not dying, and I’m not a pushover. I have to leave. I signed a contract, and grandpa was all about family. Mine needs me. I’ll call you when my plane lands.” Kagome turned from him and continued to pack. She was single minded in this, and Miroku had touched the wrong button.

“Alright. ’Night Kags.” She nodded, but refused to look at him. She promised no more tears. The next morning she told Sango, then went to the administrators, started the process of pulling out, and told them she might come back, and they promised admission when, or if she returned.

The rest of the week passed quickly, but Kagome was disturbed. She hadn’t met Inuyasha in her dreams, she hadn’t slept well, and nightmares plagued her. She refused to leave without fixing things. Now that they weren’t going to be campus rivals, maybe she could make peace with him. She had to try.

Friday evening she found herself outside of the frat house, Inuyasha’s frat house. She knocked on the door, and was admitted. No one touched her, remembering their lesson. She went up the stairs, and made it to Inuyasha’s room, and with a sharp decisive knock entered. He was at his desk, reading something. Inuyasha looked up as she entered.

“Back again?” He said it scornfully, and Kagome noticed he had dark circles under his eyes. “Want to bitch at me, again?” Kagome let that slide and walked over to his bed.

“Listen. I’m sorry about what I said, sorry that we argued, sorry that I blamed you, and sorry that we didn’t handle things better. I want to apologize. It takes two to argue, and…I didn’t want to leave without making amends.” There she had been the bigger person, and she knew that it was the right thing to do.

“What to do you mean you’re leaving?” Inuyasha had snapped out of his lay back pose, and was sitting up straight, his doggy ears swiveling toward her. She almost laughed at the adorable action.

“I mean, I’m leaving. I’m going home to my shrine. My family’s company is going under, and as the heir, I have to go home.” She tried to say it as if she was comfortable with the idea, but he saw her struggle not to get upset, it was in her eyes. He studied her, and felt regret for the time they could’ve had, and for the stupid stuff they put each other through.

“I accept your apology, but…only if you accept mine.” She nodded slightly shocked, and off balance from that admission. She smiled at him, and got up to leave.
“When is your flight?” He didn’t want her to go yet.

“Five A.M. tomorrow.” Inuyasha got up, walked over to his end table, opened the top draw, and pulled something out. Kagome watched in fascination as a beautiful swirling pink jewel, on golden chain, appeared. She held her breath as he walked over to her, and placed it around her neck.

“This was my mother’s, it was given into her keeping by a monk she befriended in Kyoto, and it is said to have magical powers. I decided when my mother died that I would give it to the woman of my dreams, and it seems she is you.” He wanted to kiss her, but pulled back, he didn’t have the right, and just because they had apologized, and been together in their dreams, didn’t mean all of the passed stuff was forgotten. “Dream of me.” He whispered it in her ear, and watched as she left, a small had caressing the jewel, and a forlorn look on her face.

What he didn’t see, or hear was comes reply, a soft promise spoken with eyes closed, “Always.”

A/N: This chapter was a little off track from what I had originally planned, but I had this really odd dream last night, and woke up with the itch to write, and this is the product. I have still got the main concept on track, but a few new exciting twists are to come. I hope you like it. I wanted to show a gathering maturity, that will be needed later. R&R please. Until next time…..Egyptian Kiss!
