16: Epilogue ~ Moments

"I don't think that is wise Hiei." a little girl reprimanded as a slightly taller and older boy, stood on top of the garage, preparing to leap.

"Why? I want to fly Alexia!" the boy screamed down to the little girl.

"Mommy and daddy wont be pleased!" Alexia, as she was called, yelled back to the boy.

"So what? Goodie-two-shoes!" The boy stuck his tongue out, and once again prepared to leap.

"Hiei! What are you doing on the garage roof!?"

"Uh oh." was all he managed to get out before the man, apparently his father, had practically leaped on the roof, and was picking him up under one arm.

"But daddy!" he whined loudly, "Alexia made me do it!" the father climbed down the ladder, holding tightly to his son.

"Hey! No I didn't you booger head!" the girl retorted hotly.

"Don't call your brother a 'booger-head'." a fairly tall black haired girl had joined the fray. "Apologize Alexia." she looked pointedly at the little girl.

"I am sorry Hiei." she stated, even at the age of seven, her voice oozed with sarcasm.

"I am sorry to Alexia." the boy, barely nine, had been a lot better at concealing his sarcasm.

"Inuyasha, put your son down." The girl said in a tone that held no real value.

"Oh, sorry." Inuyasha replied as he set down the boy gently on the ground.

"And you want another one!" Inuyasha stated jokingly as the kids began to run around the three cars in the garage, laughing.

"Well, they may be a slight hassle," the girl stated before adding, "but it is fun to make them." she laughed at this, and Inuyasha gave her a fake smile of surprise.

"Why Kagome I had no idea you were like that." The two began laughing slightly as there kids continued chasing around and around each car, sometimes running under, or jumping over.

"Mrs. Youkai," Naraku stood in the door frame that led from the garage to the house.

"Naraku, you've been my butler for over nine years, please stop calling me Mrs." she stated in a sweet tone, that held no real agitation.

"Very good ma'am. I am sorry to bother you, but you have a visitor." he replied bowing slightly as he began to walk backward into the house.

"Thank you Naraku." she replied. She found it odd that she hadn't heard, or seen a car pull up. Never the less she walked completely out of the garage, Inuyasha following her. She looked to the front door to see the last person she suspected.

"Mom..." she mumbled under her breath.

"I should leave you two alone," Inuyasha began. A loud complaint from Alexia allowed him to add, "and make sure our children don't kill each other." he turned quickly back to the garage, "Hey! Get off the Shelby!" the sound of Inuyasha's voice disappeared as Kagome walked to the front door, to confront her 'guest'.

"Mom?" she asked, her mother jumped slightly, probably expecting her to come from the front door.

"Hello Kagome." she smiled uneasily, "I am sorry, I probably should have called or, written, or-"

"What are you doing here?" Kagome interrupted.

"Would you like to come with me? So we can talk." Kagome nodded and followed her mother around the house and into the woods. There was a slight clearing where Kagome often sat to think; that was where her mother stopped.

"Your children are getting so big." she gave another nervous smile and a chuckle.

"I wasn't aware you knew I was married, let alone the fact that I even had children." Kagome retorted. It was easy to see where her children got their attitude.

"To be honest, Inuyasha told me." when Kagome settled for looking dumbfounded, rather then responding, her mother continued. "A few months after graduation, which I did go too, and I was so proud of you, and your speech. Anyway, a few months later Inuyasha came to me and he told me everything . I even found out about his father. Tragic story. After that day he often called me, wrote me. I moved to Ireland for two years. Just after Souta graduated. I saw you at his graduation, I didn't think you saw me so I didn't say hi. Inuyasha saw me though, he gave me a hug and made sure I was doing alright." she took a long, ragged breath as she tried to recall everything that had happened to her over the past eleven years.

"Eleven years I haven't spoken to my only daughter. Do you know what that is like?" she asked

"No, I love my daughter, I couldn't imagine life without her." Kagome replied. She tried really hard not to be angry, but the fact that Inuyasha had 'neglected' to tell her about his rendezvous with her mother, really irritated her. She decided to take out that aggression later however, and she spoke again, this time in a slightly nice tone. "Mother, I am sorry-" but she was cut off.

"Look Kagome, Inuyasha told me what you think of me. About how nothing was ever good enough to please me. How you felt worthless around me. I am sorry, I never meant to make you feel that way sweetheart. I just didn't want you to end up like me. Nineteen and pregnant, having to give up your scholarship to an Ivy league school, and raising a family, practically on your own so that your husband could go on 'business trips' to make money to provide for you." her mother looked down to the ground, in sadness.

"Oh great! That makes me feel better! I was just a mistake!" she yelled, crossing her arms over her chest in a defiant stance.

"No, gods Kagome! You know that isn't what I meant!" she took a sharp breath before continuing more rationally, "I just meant that I wanted you to have a good life. Like you do, with Inuyasha. I am sorry I ever doubted him, he is truly, one of the sweetest people I've ever met. I hope you realize how luck you are, and I hope you cherish him. Gods know that love comes and goes far to quickly."

"I am sorry mom, I didn't mean to yell at you." Kagome sat back down on the ground.

She looked toward her three story house and distantly saw Inuyasha being pounced on by both children. Alexia's pink dress twirling in the ever-so calm breeze. Hiei's hair, cut short, but as silver and shinning as his father's, played across his face as his father lightly tossed him up before catching him just to repeat the process. Kagome smiled at them, her heart full of love and happiness. Yet, for eleven years, her heart always held a bitter spot, her unresolved issues with her mother led her to be slightly over protective with her own children. She never wanted them to hate her the way she had despised her mother.

"I promise, I will never take them for granted, they mean everything to me." Kagome wasn't sure she was speaking, the words had been playing in her head as she watched her family. Finally they had come out.

"I pray that you don't. Kagome, I've missed you so much. If it weren't for Inuyasha, I don't think I could have made it through these years. Yes, Souta has been a big help, but Kagome, now that you are a mother, you must understand how it is to be upset when your child hates you. Even if they are only mad you made them eat broccoli." Kagome laughed slightly, just the other night Alexia threw a tantrum because she had to eat spinach. "Please see that I just wanted what was best for you. I never meant to be overbearing or obnoxious. I love you Kagome, and I need to know that you forgive me."

"I am sorry mom, I can't-" Kagome paused, fighting a slight break in her voice and tears in her eyes before she began to speak again, "I can't believe that I would let us go eleven long years without speaking. Mother, there has been so many things, that you didn't see, that almost killed me inside. I never realized how much I missed you. My graduation truly didn't bother me, my wedding, that killed me. When Hiei was born, and Alexia, you weren't there. They didn't even know there grandmother, and I am to blame. I am so sorry." Kagome allowed the tears to freely fall from her eyes as she hugged her mother closely.

"I did see your wedding. Inuyasha told me all the details. You looked so beautiful in your soft peach wedding dress, it wasn't traditional and it made you look even more dazzling. Inuyasha, in all black as usual. You know, being a father hasn't changed him much, he still wears those big pants, and sweaters." Kagome pulled away from her mother and laughed, wiping stray tears away.

"Yeah, that he does. He wont for the life of him, dress refined. But that is what I love about him. Also, thanks to, in large part, me, he is completely drug and alcohol free. But we fixed that long before we had kids, I am sure he told you." Kagome stated.

"Yes, he told me it was you who convinced him. Although, once his father," she searched for the right words, "passed on, it was probably easy for him to be without drugs." Kagome nodded at this.

The pair continued talking about things that had happened over the years. Eleven years was not easy to catch up on. Soon the moon was coming up over the trees, it was at least six o'clock. Kagome heard something in the bushes and saw Inuyasha coming up through the clearing.

"Hey guys," he said, rubbing the back of his head nonchalantly, "It's getting late, and I can't cook." he shrugged slightly and Kagome laughed.

"Yes Master." she took Inuyasha's hand and he helped her up off the forest floor. "Would you like to join us for dinner? I'm making chicken stir-fry. Hiei's favorite." she asked, helping her mother up.

"Oh, thank you dear. I would love too." she smiled and the three started walking to the house. Kagome held onto Inuyasha's arm and pulled him to a slow stop.

"Inuyasha," he turned to look at her, "I wanted to thank you. For keeping my mother informed all these years. For not forcing me to see her, although I am pretty sure you set this meeting up. But, it was really nice of you to not force me into talking to her, but still letting her be apart of my life." Inuyasha blushed but he tried to cover this with a sharp retort.

"Yeah well," unfortunately Inuyasha wasn't being very articulate tonight, "Feh!" he stated. Kagome rolled her eyes and kissed her husband lightly before following her mother up to the house. They had to run to catch up, and once they did Kagome led her mother inside the house.

It wasn't the house Inuyasha had grown up in, but it was practically as large. He had a workout room in the basement, they had a pool, and four guest rooms. (Plus the three rooms that housed Kagome & Inuyasha, Hiei, and Alexia). Four and a half bathrooms, a designer kitchen, a dinning room, one living room, and a breakfast nook. Plus one room that was Inuyasha's study and the child's play room. Inuyasha liked being able to look over his kids, and get work done at the same time.

"Kids!" Inuyasha yelled. To anyone else, his behavior toward his children would seem almost distant, but to anyone who knew him, he was the sweetest father in the world. The children came running down the stairs, practically stampeding over one another in their mad dash to be first to the dinning room.

"Alexia, Hiei, I want you to meet someone." Kagome began gently. She had once explained that she didn't get along with her mother, but had never gone into much detail, because they were just little children. "This is your grandmother." Mrs. Higarashi smiled gently to the kids and they obviously didn't have a timid bone in their body.

"Grandma!" Hiei leapt off the ground and attacked his grandmother. Alexia followed her big brother's example and did the same. Inuyasha pried the children off the older woman.

"Now, kids, be gentle. She is old." he laughed and Mrs. Higarashi shot daggers at him, "I see where your mother gets her stare from." he made the off-handed comment to the children, earning him a stern look from Kagome as well.

"I heard that." she said calmly, placing plates of food around the dinning room table. Everyone sat around the table and began to tuck-in.

"Mommy? What are these weird things?" Alexia asked, holding up a reddish fruit.

"Pom... Pom... Pomigrints" Hiei stated, taking a bite of one.

"Pomegranates dear." Kagome gently corrected.

"That is what I said," he took another bite, "Pomigrints." Kagome sighed and gave up. He definitely had Inuyasha stubborn side.

The family ate in silence. Though occasionally Hiei or Alexia would ask Mrs. Higarashi a question. Hiei had also decided it would be fun to throw chicken at his sister. Kagome and Inuyasha ignored there antics, it did no good to try and stop them. They would just do it under the table instead.

"Inuyasha, how did that case come out?" Mrs. Higarashi asked, before daintily putting a small piece of chicken in her mouth and chewing fully before swallowing.

"We won the case." Inuyasha said, not bothering to chew the half masticated chicken in his mouth, "the guy who we were up against," he swallowed the mouth full before continuing, "he decided that the evidence was much to against him and he plead guilty. Smart move, because he was up against the best lawyer in the country." Inuyasha smiled proudly. He had gone to a junior college, and then to a four year college to get his law degree, before moving on to his master's and doctorate.

"Yes dear, we are very proud," Kagome said supportively. He blushed slightly before stuffing another forkful of stir-fry in his mouth.

"How is work for you dear?" she asked Kagome, who hurried to swallow her food before speaking.

"Oh, fine. Really quite boring actually. The museum is pretty dead around this time of year for some reason. But it does give me a chance to look over my exhibit and make sure I didn't screw up. Then I can always go to the restoration room, and work on restoring some pieces. Did Inuyasha tell you that they brought in a sarcophagus, it apparently holds the ancient Egyptian Princess Taliana*. They are letting me restore it, I was so psyched." Kagome stated happily. She had been curator at the museum for five years, and she loved every minute of it. From restoring old artifacts, to setting up the displays.

The kids began to get rowdy, having long ago finished their dinner.

"You may be dismissed," Kagome said, and immediately the children thanked her for the meal and ran off toward the game room. Inuyasha helped Kagome clear the table.

"I'll do the dishes later." she said smiling.

"Well dear, I am sorry to eat and run, but I am afraid I promised Souta I would watch Natalia." Natalia was Souta's little girl, she was now one year old. He had been married for just over a year, they had eloped and went to The Galapagos for two weeks as a honey moon.

"All right. Tell Natalia aunty says hi. Come back soon, I am sure you have our number, since you've been in contact with Inuyasha so much." her mother nodded, "Call me, we can go shopping, or just get coffee or something." Kagome hugged her mother tightly.

"I will dear, you take care of Inuyasha." Inuyasha rolled his eyes and hugged the woman gently.

"See ya later ma'am." he said, as he and Kagome guided her to the door.

"Bye," they said in unison. Kagome gently closed the door, smiling to herself. It really did feel like the weight of the world had been lifted from her shoulders. Making up with her mother allowed her to be slightly more carefree somehow.

"What?" she asked as Inuyasha gave her a mischievous look.

"Nothing," he allowed the mischief to spread, into a full out devil grin.

"I've seen that look. Why are you so smug?"

"I did good." he laughed at this and Kagome smiled.

"Yes Inuyasha, you reunited me with my mother. I couldn't be happier. Thank you sweetheart." she kissed him quickly, as she had in the forest. When she stood back he continued to give an evil grin. "All hale Inuyasha." she faked a bow and he pretended to be waving to thousands of adoring fans.

"Thank you, thank you. Hold the applause" Kagome rolled her eyes and walked to the sink to begin doing dishes.

"Why don't you let Naraku do anything? You do realize it is his job. I mean I got rid of all the other servants, you could at least let him do something ." Inuyasha commented. He stood behind Kagome and wrapped his arms around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder.

"I know, but he should take a break now and then."

"Kagome, the guy hasn't worked since we got married." Inuyasha retorted.

"I didn't say it was a short break." Inuyasha sighed heavily and helped his wife do the dishes.

When the dishes were cleaned, dried, and put away the pair walked into Inuyasha's study to see that there children had worn themselves out and were now sleeping, surrounded by toys and assorted stuffed animals. Kagome gently picked up Alexia, Inuyasha grabbed Hiei, and they carried them off to their bedrooms. Kagome kissed Alexia on the forehead, tucked her in gently and left the room, leaving the door open a crack so the hallway light could shine in. Inuyasha did the same to Hiei and the couple met in the hall.

"They really are adorable aren't they?" Inuyasha commented, more to himself then to anyone else.

"Yeah, they are" Kagome slide her arms gently around Inuyasha, and he did the same back. It was moments like this when Inuyasha realized he was blessed, and he should never doubt fate.

"You want to try for another one?" he asked with the sadistic grin Kagome was so used to.

"Yeah," she smiled playfully, and they locked lips. Inuyasha thought to himself, as he kissed his wife with the same passion that had never been lost in all their years together, Yep, these are the moments.
