Chapter 5: Truth

Last Time:

“Oh really, Lord Inuyasha, do tell,” still upset at the eldest’s remark, Sango turned her attention onto the injured one.

“She’s the prodigy,” Sango’s eyes went wide, and Kagome wondered what in the world was so important, why was she so important?

The dawning of a new day finally brought relief to the haggard girl, the dark curtains drawn to her room, blocking the light from her vision. No damage was visible from the earlier break in, and the castle seemed to have settled back into its original routine. Servants rushing about, and many sluggishly walking to their dark rooms and falling prey to slumber. Kagome was not so fortunate in that department.
Though her body was at rest, her mind was not, the foreboding presence that had earlier settled on the building still lingering. A musk of sorts had filled the air and refused to leave before its havoc was released. Though she had no proof to this, the ever present pull to stir was slowly pushing Kagome through her bedroom door, and down a staircase that led to the entrance hall.

Steps muffled by the elaborate rug that ran down the steps, Kagome gently stepped upon the hardwood floor at the bottom. A grand chandelier hung eloquently at the front entrance, the dim lighting the only illumination to the home. Wondering why this was so, the young woman strolled from the square hall, entering an elaborate dining hall.

Gasping, Kagome touched the rich wood of the furniture, the richly polished gleam something her farm years had never led her to see. The fine china that sat locked in a grand cabinet were pure white, with soft blues and pinks that brought out the fineness of their quality. Golden dishes sat upon the table, a large golden flask sat in the very center, a gleaming piece that stood out from all the others. Candles danced about the room, setting a romantic, or horror filled scene, whichever the circumstance permitted the most.

Not finding anything that would relinquish her from the feelings of earlier, Kagome strolled away, wondering why the house was shrouded in gloom. Many things had been bothering her since the previous night. Many things had occurred to her in just a period of two days. She was sure, that the battle in the park had been two nights previous, and that this day was the second of the many she had disappeared. The haunting eyes of her father still plagued her memory, and refused to leave her until there was nothing left for her to hang upon.

Sighing, and trying her best to forget, Kagome found herself glancing about, and losing herself quickly within the great space of the castle. Though each room was different, though all extremely elaborate, the fact was, there were so many twists and turns, that she could not make sense of where she was going, and where she had been.

Wishing she hadn’t wondered off, Kagome stumbled upon a stone that had lifted itself up above the others. If it hadn’t been for the fact that she had been shuffling her feet, she would have never noticed the strange rock. Squatting down, and poking it with her finger, a groan was heard, and the floor shook beneath her feet.

Screeching in surprise, and jumping away, a large whole opened, a spiral stone staircase leading down into the depths of the manor. Squashing down the rising butterflies, Kagome felt herself drawn down into the murky depths. Smoke clouded her vision, and the slightly off-level decent made the trek nearly impossible, and yet, the pull to move forward would not relent.

A large chamber opened out before her, and with a great surprise, three shadowed figures were easily depicted amongst the clouded air. Coughing, and waving her hand in front of her, Kagome watched as the larger figures moved in front of the smaller one. The smaller of the two larger shadows walking towards her. And once again, the fear made her think twice before standing her ground.

A low chuckle arose from the man that had almost reached her, his laugh was that of amusement, and not of a harshness that she thought would be present. Feeling herself relaxing, Kagome allowed her muscles to once more regain their composure, and for her breath to even out. Shuddering as the cold once more bit into her, Kagome found herself facing down the man she had had more contact with over the last few hours than many.

His vision didn’t seem to be hindered by the dingy oxygen, and yet Kagome could hardly see where to place her feet. A nervous flutter worked themself through her veins as she approached the other two, who also had relaxed at the familiarity between herself and her savior.

Blinking in shock, Kagome found that the cloudy air had disappeared almost instantly. Looking behind her, she found that she could still see the layer of fog, but once she passed a certain point, any residue of the substance was gone. Raising a brow, and looking questioningly at the silver haired man by her side, Kagome found herself looking at the couple from earlier.

The man was large, in both stature and power. He had deep set amber eyes that were wide and expressive like his relative at her side. His long silver hair was pulled high upon his head, a single string of leather laying contently on the strands. He had the same marks as the one they called Sesshomaru, and his brother, Inuyasha. And his face was much resembling that of Sesshomaru’s, cold and distant, hard and malicious.

The woman was graceful and beautiful, in an almost goddess like fashion. Her body spoke more of an open fashion, yet her eyes were a cold amber that burned through the younger girl’s body. Her silver hair fell in waves and went to her mid back, swaying gracefully in the slight draft of what appeared to be a dungeon.

Staring blankly, Kagome once again fought the urge to disappear. Each gaze was penetrating, leaving holes that were invisible to the eye, yet felt by the body. A nervous sensation worked its way up her once more, and she found her hands clenching and unclenching repeatedly. A suspicion soon took over as she took in the room about her, the secret air, and the mysterious fog from earlier.

Assessing the situation, the largest man walked forward cautiously, looking even harder at Kagome. Feeling herself automatically move towards Inuyasha, a low growl reverberated off the walls, and the raven haired beauty had to look at the man beside her in question. His eyes were tinged with scarlet, and he seemed to have grasped her arm, pulling her against him.

Not understanding, a smile worked its way upon the older one’s features, and he gently stepped away. His amber eyes were sparkling with mischievousness, and if Kagome hadn’t been confused before, she was doubly more so now. Everything that happened around her seemed to be going beyond her own knowledge. Things were said that her mind could not comprehend, and she was sick and tired of it.

Before she could say anything, and let her anger be known, the one at her side gently let her go, and then turned. His eyes were serious, and his mouth a frown.
“I know you must be confused, but believe me, until this point, it was necessary to keep things secretive,” his reassuring tone did little to subdue Kagome’s ire, if not infuriate her further.

“Well, then, are you going to tell me!” after it had been several moments since he had last spoken.

“Perhaps this is a bad idea,” Inuyasha was looking at her exactly the way the others had been earlier, which unnerved her completely.

“Inuyasha, she needs to know,” the chiding of the elegant woman was enough to help make up his mind.

“You’re right mother, Kagome things have been happening to you, things I’m sure you find hard to explain,” at the nodding of her head, he continued. “These manifestations of power, have you ever experienced something similar in your life?”

“No, not that I can remember,” focusing her attention solely on him, Kagome waited with baited breath, daring him to continue.

“I see, well, I suppose it doesn’t really matter either way,” seemingly talking to himself, Kagome politely cleared her throat, which gained his attention once more. “You see, in a prophecy as old as my great grandfather, there was depicted a maiden of an enemy to help save our dying race. You, Kagome, are that maiden, considering, of course, that you are a virgin,” blushing red, Kagome nodded her consent, wishing she could disappear.

“Very well, that is good news. You see, our race has been slowly dying for many centuries now, and we feared that we would be completely wiped out, until you. From what I have seen, which I have relayed to my parents,” at this time he directed his hand to the two opposite them, “and we all agree, that you are her. A strange illness has broken out amongst our females from about the 1500's, much like you’re people’s disease known as cancer. And though this has a similar characteristic of destroying the body, it is contagious, and slowly kills the female. It is quite painful, and often the victims kill themselves before the disease ever can. And yet, through all those years, not one male has fallen prey.”

“Besides this, our remaining females, dwindling in number, since the early 1600's, have only given birth to male offspring. We are slowly disappearing from the face of the Earth, and I fear it will not be much longer before we are extinct. Do not interrupt me,” Kagome had opened her mouth, but quickly shut it at Inuyasha’s last words.

“As I’m sure you were wondering, no, we can not join with your people, it isn’t possible, not unless, there is something special about them. By special, I mean, like you. You’re different. But that’s beside the point. As I was saying, as this progresses, we have slowly dwindled as we were killed off by our enemies. Yes, the ones you came in contact with the previous night. And now, with the mortal man after us as well, we are backed into a corner, with only a hundred left, and only ten females amongst us.”
Raising a brow, Kagome felt the hairs on the back of her neck raise in alarm, her eyes swirling form each placid face. Their cool eyes and indifferent stature made her feel intimidated, and as this intensified, the realization was dawning on her quickly. They weren’t human, they weren’t even alive.

“You don’t mean, that you’re...you’re,” Kagome found it hard to form the words, her tongue unwilling to say the ludicrous thought her mind had formed. “Vampires, do you?”

“Do put it mildly, yes, I mean exactly that,” a mix of fear, disbelief, and an understanding were mixing in a haze.

“But, but, that can’t be true, they don’t exist,” and yet, even though the words were spoken, Kagome was clearly reminded of Sango’s lengthening canines as her blood poured from her neck.

“Do you really believe that, after all you have seen?” his voice was the icing on the cake, for immediately Kagome stood straight and backed away hesitantly.

“Stay back, I need to think,” Kagome wasn’t sure what she was afraid of, for even though she looked at these creatures, she couldn’t feel fear because of their presence, but because of something unknown.

Inuyasha watched her cautiously, still firm with his decision but hoping that she would come around in the end. Her wild brown eyes had finally understood the truth, and yet, he knew the rational side of her mind was trying hard to gain control over these wild thoughts. A life she had thought she knew was changing, and it was a hard concept to come together when she had been told the exact opposite.

Kagome felt her composure slowly slipping back into place, how stable it was was another matter all together. Standing from her huddled position, it was her turn now to gaze at them critically, taking in their forms with a calculating air. They looked the same as humans, but from the transformations from wolves to men, and then lengthening teeth, they clearly were not.

“A question, how come you can turn into wolves, I thought it was bats?” chuckling, Inuyasha sat himself down in a nearby chair.

“I’m sure you have heard that, but it is quite the opposite. We do not turn into bats, we do turn into owls however, but never bats,” shaking his head, his teeth gleaming in the dim light.

“Then, where did that legend come from?” Kagome strolled over to him, sat upon the cold floor, and stared at him expectantly.

“I’m guessing it came from our sister race the Lycemphs. They transform into bats, but do not drink blood, they survive off of vegetation only. I suppose, many many centuries ago, a human saw one of us drinking from a fellow human and then saw a bat. He put together that there was vampire bats, so we must change into bats. Far from the truth,” Kagome turned this over in her mind, deciding it plausible, though realizing she had never heard of that creature.

“Why aren’t you werewolves? I mean, they form into wolves, right?” at the mentioning of werewolves, the air turned tense, and a few plausible growls echoed off the walls.

“Yes, but they do not look similar. In fact, I have no idea how you could consider them wolves at all. Such a noble creature defiled by that filth,” his eyes had started turning scarlet once more, an obvious sign of anger, and though his parents stood back, Kagome felt no fear.

“What do they look like then?” blinking, and looking upon her, Kagome found herself enrapture with his handsome features.

“Hideous they are. They have no fur whatsoever, but in fact have a sickly gray skin, that holds hundreds of ripples in them. So, if you had seen these creatures, they appear to have hair, until you get very close. They have no pupils, but solid black eyes. Their heads almost resemble a Boxer’s, their noses are squashed in, though more angular than the dog’s. They have long pointed ears, much like elves you have seen in stories. They have bodies shaped like a hunched over human with too long of arms, and their tails are long and thin, too thin. Disgusting.” with each word his voice seemed to fill with more hatred.

“So, they are you’re enemies, I mean, besides the humans,” Kagome could tell by his voice he didn’t like the creatures, but to exactly what degree she wasn’t sure until she saw his eyes.

“Yes, part of them. They have allies, the witches and warlocks, which had been good friends with us, that is, until this new leader came into power. And, to the last of your statement, not all humans do we dislike, only the slayers,” Inuyasha’s words were buzzing around her head rapidly, and yet she yearned to learn more.

“But, don’t you feed upon humans?” his eyes now filled with sympathy, knowing that she was one as well.

“Sometimes, but we try to avoid it as much as possible. We like to feed on animals, and when we do take from humans, we usually leave them alive, or we take the thieves and criminals,” nodding her head, Kagome went back to brooding, wishing she could have known this before, instead being left in the dark.

“Why don’t you convert them? The humans I mean,” his eyes immediately took on a shadowed look, a grief deep within.

“Because, most of the time it doesn’t work. They go insane, or die anyways, its very hard, and only the most powerful have been successful. But still, its even difficult for them,” Inuyasha played nervously with the hem of his shirt, wishing the thoughts disappear at once.

“But, my brother?” the question he had been dreading had finally come, and Inuyasha found himself unable to look her in the eyes.

“Yes, Souta, he, it was hard. It took us all, my father, my brother, and I. Several weeks, and many of those we feared he wouldn’t make it. There were times, that I considered calling it off and ending his life, he’s a good friend of mine, even before he turned, and I didn’t want to seem him suffer like he did,” Kagome was glad he hadn’t given up, for she had really missed her brother over the period of time.

“Oh, what else?” Kagome wanted to know more, the hunger of more knowledge was overpowering.

“Let me see...,” Inuyasha had started to speak once more, but stopped abruptly as his brother, opened a nearby door, the large opening banging upon the stones walls.

“Sesshomaru?” a small female stood behind him, her large brown eyes filled with worry as the two walked quickly forward.

Inuyasha stood, realizing the menacing factor in his aura was far from normal. He glanced nervously at his side, at the small human who had found many things. Her eyes still seemed to be slightly glazed over, her body still trying to reject the information that was given.

“Mother, Father, they are here,” immediately the two crossed the space and hurried out the door, the room quaking in their wake.

“Inuyasha, what’s going on?” Kagome felt herself once more travel to his side, feeling a nervous fear working up her spine.

“A group that is not under our rule has arrived, I advise you to stay by my side at all times,” his voice filled with concern and anger, and Kagome found herself trembling slightly.

“Are they dangerous?” the look from Sesshomaru, the nameless female, and Inuyasha told her her answer. They were.
