Chapter 4: Prodigy

Last Time:

Banging slight on the paneling, Kagome heard the hollow and felt the movement of a door behind the largest and heaviest tapestry. Pulling it away from the wall, Kagome quickly turned the knob and shut the door in her wake, replacing the large tapestry before the creatures entered.

She heard the lock click on the door just before snarls and claws broke down her door, and the things infiltrated her earlier room.

Breath hitching in her throat, Kagome felt around blindly, the deep black sucking away at her body. Her lungs strained for air, and yet, even as she struggled for it, she knew it was all around her. The suffocating stench of death and fear hung on the decaying walls, the water that splashed on her feet swirling with the secrets.

Grabbing her shirt in a sheer panic, the young human felt her feet become cold and numb as her journey continued forwards. Swiping a stray raven lock behind her ear, Kagome tried desperately to listen for any sign of murmuring, for any sign of life, yet none came. None penetrated the stone walls that protected her from whatever force had forced her in this passage to begin with.

Stubbing her toe on what seemed to be the first of many stairs, Kagome climbed upwards, glancing behind as she did so, knowing only the night would greet her. The cold numbing chill returned full force as a pebble behind her fell into the small stretch of water.

Skidding to a stop, and twirling on her heel, the brown eyes that had not failed her throughout her years searched frantically for the reasons. None were found, and a sense of helplessness doubled more so and more so with each silent minute that went by. The dripping of water was the same as always, and no more noises came that would alert her of being followed by another.

Feeling as if a pair of eyes watched her every move, the young teen hurried herself up the staircase, disappearing into the shadows as a fleeting figure crept silently behind.

The fresh air greeted her nose with a welcome aroma, the slight breeze no longer tainted with the fowl odor that penetrated everything in its wake. Shivering at the memory, Kagome trekked forward once more, stumbling slightly as she lost herself in thought once again. Which seemed to happen quite often now.

The large expanse of ground rolled like waves upon the ocean, rising and falling, only to meet the next one as it fell. It was picturesque, the grand castle standing out against the haze of the falling moon. The lush foliage as the dew sparkled under the light of the fine glow. The stars that twinkled merrily up in the heavens, and the deep ink that covered all the land.

The wind that had previously been blowing now died away, the stillness of the night causing the Earth to tremble. The slight rustle of feet caused the human to whirl about, alone and confused, she sought out the cause of her troubles. Kagome caught sight of a figure in the distance, riding away on a large something. The moon framing the mass brilliantly.

Turning to get a better view, fear shot through her when she realized that the other had spotted her as well. Watching transfixed, Kagome felt the wind pick up, the leaves sticking in her hair, and dirt blinding her eyes. Tornadoes ripped across the plains, twisting and twirling as they destroyed all in their path. The turmoil headed for her body, and once again, in the moment of a dire event, a pressure built within her.

Struggling to keep it at bay, still frightened of its consequences, Kagome felt her will give way, and something solid form in her hands. Looking down quickly, a bow of the highest quality rested in her grasp, the wood feeling as if it belonged. A weight had formed on her back, not enough to startle her, but enough to let her know its presence. Reaching back and touching the object, Kagome found that it came with her, and a single arrow with a gleaming silver tip was held tight.

Staring at this marvel, she reacted on instinct, and not skill. Her feet spread apart, the wind jostling her frame as the bow raised, the arrow following suit. Kagome felt the string draw taunt as the point aimed lethally towards the person in the sky, the moon illuminating the weapon she held.

Breath hitching, and without a thought, the string was released, the zing of the projectile slicing through the air followed. A glow of sorts formed around the weapon, the purple tint to the air pulling the winds with it. A scream lit the night as the person fell from their perch, the object they had been upon blowing to bits.

Falling to the ground, Kagome looked at her hands in a horror filled gaze. She, the tender hearted, can’t kill a fly, had just shot a living creature from the sky. Though she knew she should be horrified with this fact, she just couldn’t bring the guilt that should have came after an occurrence like such.

The air was thick with a deep fog that sucked the oxygen away from her lungs. Gagging, and holding her throat, Kagome felt as if two large hands were compressing her til her body shriveled away. Groping futilely around for her bow she had dropped, the young woman felt her world growing more and more hazy. In a last minute effort, Kagome quickly grabbed an arrow and stuck it into the ground, a sphere of purple energy clearing away the death that threatened to take her life.

Grabbing her bow now that she had it in sight, Kagome shot an arrow blindly into the forest to her right, watching in fascination as the trees were lit up in a brilliant gleam. A dark figure held their arm in agony, or what was left of their arm. Whomever it was turned their face towards her, a low menacing growl erupting from their chest.

Backing up, Kagome felt her back come in contact with a tree that had positioned itself away from its brothers. Unsure of what to do, she watched as that large figure came closer once more, dark energy flying like whips all over the ground, punishing the land as if it had done wrong. Ducking down just in time, and looking up, Kagome felt the blood drain away from her face as the realization that a large sword as been thrown at her neck.

Scrambling away from the spot, and looking over her shoulder, Kagome felt a pull that was similar to that of the pressure from earlier. It was outside her body, she knew that much, but somehow it was pulling on something from inside her. Unable to move her body any longer, she stood still, no longer in control of her limbs.

Finding that her vocal chords were sill in excellent condition, Kagome did the only thing that was left to do, she let out a blood curdling scream. Time went on as she was forced to walk towards the now one armed figure, Kagome felt the warm breath of the, clearly, man in shadows as she was forced to look him directly in his cold eyes.

The wind once more had picked up, the woman from earlier standing nearby, glaring at her with hatred. Struggling as best she could, Kagome felt her knees buckle as a hand grasped her throat and squeezed, pushing the walls of her windpipe together so that the flow of air disappeared. Gasping, and grasping the wrist that connected the hand to the arm, she was mildly surprised to find she had control once more. Forgetting this fact almost as fast as it came, Kagome kicked out blindly, only to find it worsened the hold about her body.

A low growl was heard at this point, a rumble that came from not the man before her, nor the woman to her left, but from some point to her back. Kagome was dropped immediately as two large silver wolves jumped from their cover, one attacking the battered woman as the other took on the dark man.

Struggling to her feet, and rushing away from the scene, Kagome felt around for her earlier weapons, but found them gone. Clutching her throbbing throat as welts formed underneath her touch, she reeled back in disgust as several streams of blood creeped along her ivory flesh. Her hands were covered in the liquid, coloring the collar of her shirt, and staining the grass that stood in stunned awe.

Two arms wrapped themselves around her waist, and pulled her to the lawn below, the harsh blow taking the wind out of her. Sango suddenly appeared in her sight, a lust forming in the other’s eyes. Crawling back, Kagome felt a new fear well up in the pit of her stomach as the brown eyes of her friend became a golden quality, and the two normal canines lengthened.

Feeling lost, Kagome immediately felt cornered as the two wolves from earlier strolled towards her, one looking from her and the other woman. Squeaking as the larger of the two lunged forward, Kagome tucked her head into her arms, hoping that this would provide some form of protection from the great beasts.

Looking up in confusion, Kagome found that the one that had jumped towards her, hadn’t went for her, but for Sango. The young woman was being held down by the large body, the silver wolf growling a low warning as his smaller comrade went towards the human that wreaked of fear.

His cold nose gently touched her cheek, a low rumble that was not threatening forming in his chest. Sighing, Kagome leaned heavily against the trunk of a tree, whimpering as the pain came back full force. Tears formed in the corner of her eyes, as the large canine approached once more, licking the wounds upon her neck.

A soothing wave washed over her, taking with it the fear and agony of her earlier battle. Scratching the animal’s ears in thanks, Kagome marveled at the soft feel of the coat that grew so thick upon the animal’s body. The amber eyes that looked upon her were filled with grief, mixed with anger and anguish.

Stifling a yelp of surprise, Kagome found that her hand had not her blood, but her savior’s life supply upon them. Moving painfully about, the bruises from earlier still present, she delicately examined the deep gash upon his side. Parting the hair, and holding back the bile that threatened to come up, Kagome looked about her for any sign of help.

Feeling the mouth of the animal upon her shoulder, Kagome moved back as a gentle nip was applied. Gazing at the sitting beast, she watched as the body shifted from its earlier look, growing and forming into another being. Yelping in surprise, Kagome met the amber eyes of the man she had threatened earlier in the castle, the once arrogant male, now docile.

Curious beyond belief, Kagome again approached him, wishing she could help him somehow. Hours ago she had wanted to throttle the man, but now, since he had saved her life, she had forgiven him for his rude behavior.

Sitting beside him, the other wolf now transformed into the other she had seen that night in the park. And Sango now back to her normal self, her brown eyes filled with worry for the man and sorrow for her earlier actions. Her brown hair was filled with debris, and her cheeks scratched from vengeful sticks that lined the ground.

“Are you alright?” Kagome touched her savior’s shoulder, her brown orbs filled to the brink with tears that had yet to fall.

“I will be,” his amber eyes reflected things that worried her to no end, things that she didn’t want to see.

“Kagome, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean...” Kagome felt arms wrap around her shoulders as Sango cried on her shoulder, wailing her woes.

Patting her back and whispering things of comfort, Kagome watched the men with a steady gaze. Both of them had similar characteristics, the eyes, hair, moon tattoos, and elf shaped ears. Both just as breathtaking as the next.

Blushing at her thoughts, Kagome finally fought herself free from the clinging arms of her comrade. The strong facade that she remembered had disappeared, replaced now by worry and fear for her friend.

“I’m okay, I promise,” hugging her gently and then pulling back, Kagome felt the gleam of the night fall upon her skin, and once more the beauty of the night left her speechless.

“Kagome?” Sango’s tentative voice sprang up, the sobs held in her throat, but barely.

“Hmmm?” still lost in her world, Kagome lazily turned to the woman at her side, opening one of her eyes to let the other know she was listening.

“Um...I don’t mean to intrude, but how did you survive Naraku as long as you did?” Kagome, with both eyes open, looked at her curiously.

“Who? Do you mean that man?” at her friend’s nod, Kagome shrugged uncaring, enjoying the gently bathing of light that she received. “I don’t know.”

“Have you not figured it out yet Sango?” the cold voice of the elder man, brought her from her transfix once more, which greatly annoyed the girl.

“Well, I’m sorry if I haven’t the same thinking as you, Lord Sesshomaru,” the respect was still in her voice, but Kagome was sure that if it had been any other, sarcasm would have poured from her voice.

“Stupid female,” Kagome threw a hand to muffle her giggle as a red tinge took on the other’s face, Sango was enraged, but knew better than to act upon her anger.

“Its simple Sango,” the one in front of Kagome now spoke, his voice kinder than the other man’s.

“Oh really, Lord Inuyasha, do tell,” still upset at the eldest’s remark, Sango turned her attention onto the injured one.

“She’s the prodigy,” Sango’s eyes went wide, and Kagome wondered what in the world was so important, why was she so important?

A/N: Oh yes, as you have probably noticed, Inuyasha looks different than in the anime. He doesn’t have the dog ears, but elf ears like Sesshomaru, and the same markings as Sesshomaru. Ok? Ok. If you have any questions, just ask, I’ll be glad to answer them. R&R please! Luv ya guys!
