Chapter 3: Night Creatures

Last Time:

Kagome fell to the ground, her breathing ragged as she felt her body weaken with fatigue, she had never before felt the need for sleep this much. Before her world went dark before her eyes, she saw the damage that she had wreaked. No one that had attacked her was left, just small piles of dust that floated away in the breeze. And the surprised looks of the warriors as their enemies disappeared in the midst of a battle.

Pain, a searing pain that cut deep into her, splitting her head until if felt as if it would explode. Kagome felt weak, her limbs useless to her commands that she ordered time and time again. She had no idea where she was, whether or not she was safe or in danger. The air about her was unnatural, too pure for any pollution that now filled the oxygen.

Opening her eyes, Kagome gasped out loud, and ignoring her head, sat straight up in her bed, or rather the bed she was laying upon. The room, though dark, was made entirely of cherry red, the deep color glimmering in the soft shimmer of the hearth’s glow.

Velveteen sheets hugged her body, the soft texture making her dig deeper into the rich fabric. Kagome had never felt so at peace before, the atmosphere welcomed her, called her in, and she felt snug as her eyes drifted shut once more. The ever present yearn to sleep was pressing down on her, weighing her down til she felt her world slowly fade away into a black haze.

A door slamming awoke her shortly there after, the room tremoring as picture frames fell and busted on the floor below. Sliding out from under the covers, Kagome fell to the floor instantly, her world spinning as the small earthquake like rampage stormed out below. Pressing her ear to the floor, and holding her breath, clipped words and raised voices were the only thing she could process. Nothing that gave her the identity of her location.

“Looks like you’re having fun,” Kagome sat up instantly, her cheeks painted a brilliant pink at the fact of being caught.

“Um, I, you, eep!” the other girl in the room giggled humorously, strolling effortlessly across the floor and placing a golden tray filled with food upon the bedside table.

“Don’t worry, its alright, the master is just upset,” the young beauty helped Kagome from the floor, smiling as a look of pain crossed the younger of the two’s face.

“Oh, so, where am I?” sitting back on the bed, and taking the tray in her hands, the young woman suddenly realized how not hungry she truly was, in fact, the sight and smell of it made her stomach turn.

“Oh, yes, I do suppose this is quite confusing to you,” the woman that Kagome had yet to learn a name of sat down hesitantly at her side, watching her movements with a purpose filled gaze.

“Um, so, why is your master mad?” the young slayer type woman turned her head away, staring absently into space.

“I’m not permitted to say,” Kagome nodded, neither pressing or asking anymore.

“My name’s Kagome, by the way,” looking at her hands, which had shed off the tray, her fingers twisting and turning.

“Sango, Sango Houshi,” the two met eyes, and a smile worked its way across the two girls’ facades.

Groaning as another wave of pain assaulted her head, Kagome lay down helplessly, twisting into herself. She felt the world spin, and the ground beneath her become unstable, her stomach nauseous. Closing her eyes and clearing away the faint glow of the flames, the young woman desperately tried to rid herself of the ache.

Kagome felt the bed shift, the weight disappearing from the side of where Sango had been sitting. Her soft footsteps didn’t go unnoticed, and soon the cool hand of the other touched her heating forehead. In a hiss like manner, Kagome felt the palm leave her forehead hurriedly, as if burned, and then immediately shake her shoulder urgently.

Cracking her eyes open, and Kagome glared irritably at the pesky girl, how dare she drag her further into her agony! The ill young woman fumed silently, but regretted it instantly once the knife twisted further in her mind, turning until it cracked her skull. Crying out, with relief, she felt her world give way once more, and the bed becoming a distant memory.

Turning onto her side, Kagome was aware instantly of a steady breathing a few feet to her right, the quiet snores familiar to her ears. Sitting up hurriedly, the pain long in her past, she saw with a relieved air, that Souta lay injured, though alive, a few cots away from her own. Frowning at a new realization, she curiously stood upon her feet, searching as to where she had landed now.

The walls held large stashes of shelves, upon which were even more groupings of jars of some kind. They were ancient, their clay looking hand made from times in which that was the only choice. She knew not what were in the contents, and wasn’t completely sure she truly wished to see what each held.

Stretching her limbs, and moving gracefully about, Kagome moved closer to the hearth’s glow, wishing to warm her numbing fingers. This place, sent chills all along her spine, yet, even though her skin crawled, and she sat so close to the fire, she could not feel the heat. It was as if her skin was repelling the offered heat, the warmth that her body was craving so dearly.

Frustrated, and strolling away from the fireplace, Kagome sat dejectedly upon her bed. It was cold, a biting chill that worked its way all through her bones. Rubbing her arms hurriedly, little to no heat resulting from the friction, the girl slowly bunched the blankets about her shoulders, holding it as if an oversized shawl.

“You’re awake, are ye?” Kagome jumped up with a squeak, looking about her repeatedly, not able to locate the disembodied voice.

“Where are you?” Kagome felt a cool hand grab her shoulder from behind, and turning quickly, was met by the face of the woman she had saw earlier in the streets.

The same hazy blue eyes met her darker ones, and Kagome, for a split second, felt herself leave her body. Scrunching her brow, and shaking her head, she backed away wearily, gently searching for the door against the wall. The aura that protruded from the girl was unfriendly, and the younger of the two felt the familiar grasp of danger come forward once more.

Finding the knob, the room was soon left behind, the halls flying by in a mass of color. Tapestries hung silently on the stones, yet she did not notice their beauty, or their glowing eyes as they examined her progress. All she knew, was, that back there in that room, was a woman that had abilities that persisted that she leave, and she was not going to question.

Kagome had long since felt the growing pressure in her lungs, the steady rhythm as it strengthened and pushed until she thought her chest about to bust. Wheezing in and out, the young woman wondered silently where she had ended up. Nothing looked familiar to her eyes, but she knew that it wouldn’t, for, most likely, when she traveled these halls, she was unconscious. Sighing in desperation, she silently wondered to herself if there was no one to come to her rescue.

The silent steps that padded down the hall filled her with relief, her mind thanking anyone and everyone she thought of. Its seemed that luck was with her this time, which was not a usual occurrence for her. Kagome slipped around the corner to greet whomever was strolling down the nearly deserted halls. Once again, relief came forth, for the young woman known as Sango stood surprised in front of her. Obviously, she had not expected to see the other standing alone in the halls, and Kagome could blame her for that.

Sango seemed to watched her suspiciously, and before she knew what was occurring, she was quickly yanked into a nearby room. It was dingy, which could only be assumed to be a closet, though no light was there, so Kagome wasn’t quite sure. The fearful glances of her partner made her become curious as well, and in turn, peek out the crack that was left between the door and the frame.

A silent gasp worked its way up her throat as the sight before her came into vision. One of the gods from earlier strolled down the halls, his silver hair brightening the dark lit halls with a warmth of the moon. Holding her breath in anticipation, Kagome desperately tried to distract herself from the heavenly view, but knew it to be impossible, especially when his even more perfect face turned towards them.

Sango’s curses, soon brought her back to reality, and she questioningly looked at the woman, wondering what was wrong. The look told her that whatever it happened to be, it was bad, terribly horrid.

A low growl came from the now open door, and Kagome quickly slid back to the back wall, nervously glancing about. She felt the piercing suns beat down upon her with venom as Sango gently slid between the menacing man. Her form was smooth, her gate perfect, and Kagome couldn’t help but feel envious.

“Your majesty, please, forgive us for trespassing on sacred areas,” Sango’s head was bowed, and Kagome couldn’t figure out exactly why.

“What is she doing here, she belongs in the dungeons,” Kagome shrunk back at this, glaring back at the cold man.
“Sire, she is Souta’s younger sister, and was brought here because her life was in grave danger,” Kagome felt her anger raising, the god like man was nothing what she had expected.

“I don’t care about human affairs, get rid of the vermin before I,” he never finished his sentence, for the frail fist of the woman in the back made contact with the man’s chin.

He didn’t move, he didn’t flinch, nor did he even blink, but the point was given out none the less. Kagome would not have someone talking like that in her presence, she had been taught to treat others like equals. His hate filled glare didn’t lessen, in fact, she was sure it doubled ten fold, but no matter, she wouldn’t allow some arrogant fool treat this girl and herself like that.

Gathering another round of courage, and holding her gaze even with his, Kagome silently challenged him to do any further. She felt the heat of a blush creep up her face as the chill once more returned to her body, destroying the warmth of her anger. How was the cool air penetrating her so quickly, and yet it did nothing for the people about her?

Kagome felt her body quake in a numbing freeze as the tight grasp of the man’s hand clamped down on her upper arm. Squeezing until she was sure they would fuse with her flesh, Kagome glared back, hardly flinching as she felt the bruise rise closer to the surface. She would not give in to the ignoramus, not on his life or her’s.

Hissing as the blood dripped from his fingernails, a faint whistle echoed along the passage, and Kagome silently wondered if the dogs were being called upon her. Whatever it was, the god-like man took notice of the shrill note instantly, his head rising in the hair, and his golden eyes taking on a wild, untamed, and strong glaze.

The rushing of wind, and the disappearance set her off guard, a bewildered look upon her face. The only proof that he had ever been there was the sickening shade of her skin now.

Kagome didn’t know how much more time passed, only that she was dumped quickly into the room she had been in earlier, the door locked in Sango’s wake. Sighing dejectedly, and nursing her injured arm, Kagome looked sorrowfully out the night window, wondering if the dawn would bring new hope.

So long, as long as she could, she had hungered for the deep obsidian, and though she still loved its mysteries, it seemed more foreboding than ever. Twisting the end of her shirt nervously, Kagome looked out her window, scrunching her brows in confusion as the hillside was alight with dark, though distinctly, non-normal moving object.

The great “things” moved silently and swiftly over the ground, neither disturbing the foliage nor the moon’s glow. Their backs were a grayish sheen as the white glow illuminated their figures to her dull eyes. They moved swift and silent, until, she could see them at the gates of the home, tearing, and shouting until they tumbled before their wrath.
Shadows crossed their paths, and Kagome could see speeding object obstruct the moon’s haze. The chill of dread was filling the air, and the figures that move by land and move by air, had the feel of unwelcomed company. The raven haired girl didn’t know what to do, her mind racing as the beginnings of bangs and splintering wood was heard to her ears.

Screams of terror and rage filled the castle like home, the fear radiating from the floorboards and the walls. Rushing to the side wall, but to the door, for she knew that was where they things were, she desperately felt around for something. Didn’t old places like this always have secret passages? She hoped it were true.

Banging slight on the paneling, Kagome heard the hollow and felt the movement of a door behind the largest and heaviest tapestry. Pulling it away from the wall, Kagome quickly turned the knob and shut the door in her wake, replacing the large tapestry before the creatures entered.

She heard the lock click on the door just before snarls and claws broke down her door, and the things infiltrated her earlier room.
