Chapter 1: True Feelings

Sango was looking at her friends talking, and felt totally out of the conversation, yet again. She turned her back on them, and stared at the stars, stroking Kirara's head. She sighed, and heard a bit of the conversation. "Well, I think that this Hobo guy needs to just back off," Inuyasha said grumpily.

"His name is Hojo," Kagome corrected Inuyasha.

"Whatever, I still don't like the sounds of him," Inuyasha continued.

"I think that you are jealous of this boy who is trying to court Kagome-sama," Miroku said, in a wise sounding voice.

"Feh!" Inuyasha said, and then turned away. Sango was glad that the conversation was over. She really didn't want to hear about it all anymore. 'Everybody knows that Inuyasha and Kagome love each other, why don't they just tell each other that?' Sango thought bitterly, and a voice replied, 'For the same reason you and Miroku don't confess how you feel to each other.' Sango sighed again.

"I'm going to the hot springs," Sango told them, as she started to get up.

"It's dark out! You can't go at night!" Inuyasha said, turning to look at her.

"I can go whenever I want," Sango replied, bitterness still in her voice. 'I didn't mean to sound so mean, but maybe I'll get to be alone if I do this,' she said, and stalked off to the hot springs.

"Kagome, you need to go with her," Inuyasha said, still surprised that Sango had said that to him.

"Okay, Inuyasha," Kagome said with a smile. She was never one to turn down bathing in the hot springs.

"Finally…" Sango said, taking off her clothes, and slipping into the water. Kirara was still with her, and watched intently, making sure that nobody came and disturbed her master.

"Sango?" Kagome asked.

"Yeah, I'm here," Sango said, not really wanting the company.

"Can I join you?" Kagome asked, hope in her voice. 'Well, it's not really Kagome's fault, and I see her as my best friend now, so I'll try talking to her about it,' Sango said, a little hope lifting her spirits.

"Sure, the water is nice," Sango said, smiling a little.

"Thank you," Kagome said, and she took off her clothes, and also slipped into the water. "Are you okay?" Kagome was looking at Sango with a face full of concern.

"No, not really. I feel like I don't belong with this group," Sango began.

"What do you mean? Of course you belong!" Kagome said immediately. Sango sighed.

"Not really. I mean, Inuyasha doesn't really like me, and Houshi-sama, er…Miroku…only sees me as somebody he can feel up on!" Sango said, a slight edge to her voice.

"Inuyasha is always so mean to you, hoping he'll help you cheer up some, or at least to keep your mind from your past, you know that Sango!" Kagome said, not quite believing what Sango was saying. "And Miroku only does that, because he's trying to hide his true feelings towards you!"

"I know…but you all have your reasons to get revenge on Naraku, and they are better than my reason. I just want revenge!" Sango said. She knew she was fighting a losing battle now.

"That's what Inuyasha is in it for!" Kagome said, starting to get frustrated. "Sango…" Sango just looked away, letting one solitary tear run down her cheek.

"I just don't belong with you, that's all," Sango said. She got up out of the water, and put a towel around her dampened body. "I just want to be alone for awhile," she said, looking back at Kagome. 'I guess Kagome really didn't understand,' Sango thought to herself. She headed out into the forest, and sat down under a tall tree to think. 'I feel kind of selfish, but I don't belong with them…I accept that…why don't they? They no longer converse with me…well, not too often. All I'm good for is fighting off demons with my Hiraikotsu, and because I have Kirara!' Sango thought bitterly.

"Naraku!" Kagura was looking all around the castle for Naraku, but could not find him. 'Oh well,' she thought. She went back to her room to find Kanna standing there, holding up her mirror. Kagura looked into it, and saw Sango sitting there. "Why would I want to see that girl? She is just a Youkai Exterminator. Nothing of my concern," Kagura looked at Kanna, disgust showing on her face.

"Naraku wants you to kill her," Kanna said in her monotone childish voice.

"And if I refuse?" Kagura asked.

"He will kill you and the girl," Kanna said with a blank stare.

"Where is Naraku?" Kagura asked, feeling rather frustrated.

"I cannot tell you, Kagura," Kanna replied. With that, Kanna left the room. Kagura scowled. 'How can she just obey Naraku that easily!' Kagura thought. 'I despise them both,' she thought bitterly. She remembered how Sango appeared in the mirror. She looked rather depressed, and frustrated. Kagura thought for a moment longer, then decided to go.

"At least I'll get out of this stupid castle," Kagura said softly to herself.

"Sango?" Miroku was coming towards her.

"What?" she asked, not trying to hide her frustration. He had made her lose her train of thought, and it did not please her.

"I'm sorry, but Sango, you need to come back to camp. It is not safe out here," he said to her, his eyes pleading.

"You don't think I can take care of myself?" Sango snapped at him.

"That is not what I mean! I am just worried about you!"

"You are worried about me? You never seemed to care before," Sango replied bitterly. Miroku was looking rather flustered now.

"Sango, I beg of you!" he said, not knowing how he could get her to come back with him.

"No, Houshi-sama," she said gently. 'I must push down my anger,' she thought to herself. "I will come back when I'm ready," she added. Miroku looked at her, concern showing on his face. She tried to smile him a sincere smile, but did not succeed. Another tear streaked down her face. As soon as Miroku saw the tear, he moved towards her, and sat next to her.

"What is wrong, Sango?" he asked her.

"Nothing. I just want to be alone," Sango said, looking away from Miroku's face. 'Why does he have to look at me like that?' Sango asked herself. The expression on his face made her heart melt. She felt like he truly cared for her.

"Please, Sango?" he asked, a look of despair now on his face. He put an arm around her waist, and Sango looked into his eyes. 'Should I tell him how I truly feel?' she thought to herself. After looking into his concerned eyes, she rested her head on his shoulder, and told him how she felt. 'Maybe he'll be more understanding than Kagome was…' Sango thought hopefully.

Miroku let Sango say everything she wanted to say without any interruptions. When she finally finished, he looked down at the ground. "I am sorry, Sango-sama," Miroku said to her. "I feel that this is my fault," he continued.

"What do you mean your fault?" Sango asked, not looking up. She didn't want him to blame himself for how she felt.

"We have not been treating you with the respect that you deserve, and I feel that it is my fault for letting you down," he said, glumly.

"I don't understand…" she said to him. "You haven't let me down…" she looked at him finally. 'I know I wanted somebody more understanding than Kagome, but this is ridiculous! I don't want Miroku to blame everything on himself!' she thought frantically. "It's not your fault!" she said, still not sure what he was saying. He wrapped both arms around Sango, and she felt an odd sensation.

"I'm afraid I have," Miroku whispered, and kissed her gently on the forehead.
