"Wench! This is the last time I'm gonna put up with this!" His grip tightened on her collar as she squirmed and kicked uselessly, hovering a foot off the ground. "Idiot, you honestly thought that you could get away so easily?" Kagome stuck her tongue out at him.
"You think I'd stay here to be tortured?" she cried, swinging her arms around, trying to land a painful blow to her captor. "Let me down!"
"No." Inuyasha shifted her to his other hand and rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "I think it's time to see Kikyou."
"NO! Let me go! You stupid jerk!"
"That's NO way to speak to me, slave!" the hanyou roared, shoving his face very close to hers. "You belong to me. You will obey me. Or else I'll have Kikyou beat you again." Kagome's eyes widened. She squirmed again, twisting her arms behind her head trying to loosen his grip.
"That's not fair! I'm not a beast! I'm a human being!"
"You're a slave. Slaves are property and they are meant to obey." Inuyasha began searching for Kikyou, still holding Kagome by her collar as he walked along. "Kikyou should be around here somewhere!"
"Come on you big dummy! Put me down this instant!" Inuyasha growled deep in his chest, flexing his sharp claws. Kagome saw this and gulped. "Are you going to beat me?" she asked in a small voice.
Inuyasha paused for a second then shook his head as he picked up his pace.
"No."
"Huh? Why not! Kikyou does it every time she gets the urge!" she reasoned aloud. "Why not you?"
"Because if I let my rage get in the way of my reason," he began.
"He could kill you," a cold voice finished. Inuyasha looked up and a broad smile split his face; his fangs gleamed in the glaring afternoon sun. Kagome swallowed nervously and looked up to see Kikyou, who was glaring at her.
"Ah, Kikyou," Inuyasha said happily. "I was just looking for you." The trained miko frowned at Kagome who was still dangling uselessly above the ground in his strong grasp.
"Put her down."
"Ah!" she cried as she was dropped abruptly onto the ground. She moaned in pain as she landed sprawled out on the grass. Kagome got up and rubbed her abused tail bone. "Ow…" She winced. That would definitely leave a bruise.
"What is it this time?" Kikyou sighed, folding her arms against her chest. "This is the fifth time you've came to me in less than a week!"
"She's rebellious and wild."
"Then tame her. I don't have time to get caught up in your moronic antics. I have workto do." She tossed her hair behind her shoulder and sighed.
"This is the fourth time she tried to run away!" Inuyasha cried in frustration, glaring at Kagome who glared back at him with equal ferocity. "And I'm tired of it."
"But she's your responsibility, not mine. It's your job to take care of her."
"She won't listen to me!" Kagome watched the exchange and sighed. But this is my chance! I'll run away and find Sango! Then we'll both be free again! She started to crawl away on her hands and knees, until a big, baggy pair of red pants blocked her escape route. She looked up into the angry eyes of Kikyou.
"You wear on me," Kikyou said, shaking her head. She fingered the thick, black whip in her grasp. Raising it high above her head, she cracked it down on Kagome's back. The girl let out a muffled gasp of pain. A raging fire seemed to explode within her and spread like a wildfire through her fingertips to the ends of her hair. She whimpered.
"I want an easier way," Inuyasha muttered. His eyes showed brief regret for Kagome's beating but it quickly vanished with a pointed look from Kikyou.
"An easier way?"
"Yeah! So it won't be as hard to keep her from escaping. I want it so that she'll be more obedient!"
"You always want something," Kikyou moaned. She scowled at Kagome's fallen form then shook her head. "I guess right now is a good time as any."
"What?" Kikyou rummaged around her pocket and pulled out a glittering necklace of beautiful, shiny, white pearls that caught and reflected the suns rays. It looked like it was strung together by the pure, silver strands of a unicorn's mane. In short, it was beautiful. "I don't get it. That just looks like a gift to me."
"To you, but to me, it's a curse." Inuyasha cocked his head.
"Curse?You're cursed?" he asked worriedly.
"No," Kikyou shook her head with dismay. "No, your slave will be cursed. By itself, this necklace is just pearls and unicorn hair combined, a rare item indeed. But with the help of my miko powers this can become a great burden and a curse." Inuyasha was now interested.
"How so?"
"With a special incantation, you can make your slave fall and it will be painful. She will be eager to follow your every wish and desire, unless she enjoys pain. But only you can control this necklace." Her grip tightened on it. "And only you have the power to remove it, if you choose to do so."
"Like that would ever happen!" Inuyasha snorted.
Kagome groaned as she pried herself from the ground. Her usually dirty face now had large tear streaks in it, cutting through the thick patches of grime. She hadn't heard a word they were saying, but she knew whatever it was, was bad. Kagome sighed and struggled to sit up.
Inuyasha's gaze shot towards her, hard and calculating.
"Stand up," he ordered her.
"No," Kagome huffed
"Get over here, NOW!"
"You won't hurt me."
"Kikyou will and she's right next to me." When Kagome continued to disobey his orders, he turned to Kikyou and growled, "See! What a fat stubborn ox. The necklace is the only way."
"It would make both of her lives much easier." The miko sighed. "I will be exhausted afterwards and I will need to be tended to."
"Anything for you, Kikyou," Inuyasha assured her. While he did this Kagome made gagging motions behind his back before rolling her eyes.
"Fine," the miko conceded.
She threw the necklace up in the air and began chanting. Before the forces of gravity could pull it to the ground, Kikyou's spell grabbed hold of it. The necklace radiated a brilliant pink light and all of the pearls separated and joined together again. Kagome's breath caught in her throat. What pretty magic, she thought innocently, unaware of the harm it would bestow upon her.
It suddenly shot towards her and it went over her head and settled on her neck. It stopped glowing and now it just glittered a dull white. Kikyou exhaled nosily, patting her sweaty brow.
"Now Inuyasha. A word of your choosing and the spell will be complete." Inuyasha racked his brains for a second.
"Um…hm...uh…stay!"
An immediate pressure pushed down on her back until she felt her knees falter. In a second she had slammed to the ground and let out a groan of pain. It was just as bad as a lash from the whip. It sent pain shooting through every part of her body, causing her brain to pound in her skull.
Tears of anguish trickled down her face. Inuyasha gasped without a sound.
"Is it as painful as it looks?" he asked. Kikyou nodded.
"That and more." She fanned herself. "I am very tired from that excursion. I shall need a warm bath and food and entertainment." Inuyasha nodded and looked hesitantly at Kagome who still remained in the same position - face down. Even though her sobs her muffled by the ground, he could still hear them loud and clear. Why did it hurt to hear a woman cry? But he couldn't comfort her. She was his slave, not a companion.
"Come. We have much work to do." Inuyasha instructed.
To his surprise, Kagome forced herself to stand on trembling legs and started walking for him. He felt a stab of guilt wash through him when he saw a large, ugly bruise on her face, marring her looks even more than the dirt and grime did. He winced.
Kagome glowered at the hanyou as another wave of guilt crashed in him. She ground her teeth together and clenched her hands into fists.
"I hate you," she whispered. She may have listened to him. She may have been obedient to avoid more mind-jarring pain but it fake. It was forced.
She was forced to be obedient, or suffer the consequences.
