Chapter 2
~Kagome Wonders What She Has Done~
Sesshoumaru has gone now, he only left a few minutes ago. I had been bombarded with questions upon entering my mentor's hut. The most memorable being from a rather angry Inuyasha, "Where the hell have YOU been?" I had told him that I had been meditating. I think they bought it...for now.
Now my son lies curled in my arms, content and in dreamland. Inuyasha left a few minutes ago to meet up with Kikyou at Goshinboku, while Miroku and Kaede talk of the day's events. Sango sits beside me near the flames of the fire, Kirara is in her arms, much like Shippo in form of sleeping. The dancing flicks of the flames entrance me and I lose all sense reality. For the longest time there is nothing but the flames, then:
Why did he offer such a thing? Perhaps I am nothing but a tool? Why would he call me beautiful if I am nothing more than an instrument? Come on, Kagome!! Think! Could it be that he actually likes you? Yeah, but why? You are powerful, beautiful, immortal, and loyal, that's why he would like you. Okay, so how would immortal be a good thing? It means that you are her forever, okay at least five hundred years, all thanks to Naraku. I'd kill him again if he wasn't already dead! Now I have to spend the next five centuries playing nice to all of the those I know will die. What do I do when that happens? The only ones I'll have left are Shippo, Kirara, and my friends' descendents. What will I do then?
"Kagome?" I hear my name, how is it that the voice is foreign? "Kagome?" This time the speaker nudges me softly in the shoulder. I finally cave in and look to the person who has interrupted my depressing thoughts.
Slowly my eyes widen as I begin to recognize the person, "Sango?"
Her eyes are full of concern as she tells me that I had been crying. Out of impulse I wipe the offending droplets from their placement upon my face. "What happened with Sesshoumaru, Kagome?"
My eyes fly open from their watching the child in my arms sleep. "Nothing happened." I lie.
She tells me that the others are in another hut and that as my friend, "I can and will beat it out of you, if I have to."
"He requests that I live with him." My once more placid eyes fall upon my friend.
"In his palace?" I nod slowly. "As his mate? Or as an ally?" I shrug as it was up to me how things would turn out. Sango's voice is soft as thought she was talking to one of the village children, "You love him don't you, Kagome?"
"I-I don't know."
She nods her head as though she understands, "He does love you, Kagome. Inuyasha loves you, just not as much or as deeply as Sesshoumaru." As though anticipating my question she continues to fill me in. "About a month ago he came by asking why you were so depressed. It was about the same time that we reunited the twins with their family." I remember that, "He found me in the woods during a mission with Miroku." She stops and looks at me through her chocolate depths. "He was really worried, Kagome. That's what took us so long. We had to explain to him, between Miroku and I , I think we covered it thoroughly." She reaches out to grab my hand, "You're not angry?"
I shake my head and squeeze her hand tightly, "No, I'm not mad." She looks as though a heavy burden has just been lifted. "You did a good thing."
She narrows her eyes dramatically in an attempt to be mischievious, "So are you in love? I know your heart has NOT been on Inuyasha for nearly a year." Her face returns to normal as she places a finger to her lips in thought, I take the moment to calm my heart from the sudden change. "Actually, you've been on someone else since we joined up with Sesshoumaru to defeat Naraku, almost a year and half ago." She leans foreward, careful not to disturb the resting cat.
"Has it really been that long?" It's now my turn to think, "Actually it was when we first met Rin, almost three years ago." We both giggle softly as Kaede and Miroku enter the hut. They exchange worried glances, earning even more giggles from us. "So?" I gasp out for everyone. Sango echoes my own question, "So, should I go with him?" I sober up and begin to worry as there is no response from the others.
My friends shake their heads as though telling me it would be unwise. Finally Miroku spoke in his typical, soft tone he saves for when Inuyasha is not around, "He will love you too much and treat you better than any other man could hope to treat one such as yourself."
He sighs heavily and Kaede picks up as though it was a signal, "Ye have no chance of losing your sacred gift, but may be able to use them when ye feel to."
She looks to Sango who narrows her eyes dangerously, "You won't have to worry about him sleeping with another girl." Her voice was soft but fury rose to her eyes, "If you don't you'll regret it all your life!"
I nod my agreement after a few minutes worth of recovery, "You guys are right." The night was still early though it had been dark for nearly four hours. "Okay then, I have to go to sleep, he'll be here at dawn." The three in the hut looked at me in surprise as I lifted the sleeping child carefully to set him on the out set futon. As I crawl into the covers I look over my shoulder.
Sango smiles brightly, "You were planning all along huh?" I nod my head once bfore returning the smile. "Good, can I tell Inuyasha?" Her voice holds a hint of evil as does her smile.
"I think we should let Sesshoumaru." My smile widens as my friends follow suit. Miroku and Sango now share a futon beside mine while Kaede sleeps across the fire from us. Slowly the four of us drift to sleep awaiting the following day. Some for slightly more violent and unforgiving reasons than others.
