Kagome sighed. This had been such a long day. She and Shippou were in her era, Shippou sitting in her lap. Kaede had made a charm for Shippou, so that anyone, besides Kagome, who looked at him, saw an ordinary child. The agent called her name. “Miss Higurashi?” She stood up and carried Shippou into the man's office. The man sat in his chair behind a desk, and indicated that she should sit across from him. She complied and looked over at him, waiting patiently. He looked at her curiously for a moment. She started when he suddenly spoke. “So you wish to adopt…” Here he looked at the papers in front of him. “…Shippou?” He looked back at her. “Yes.” She said. Then she sensed it. Youki. And it was coming from the man across from her. Could he be a demon? She wasn't sure. One thing she did know for sure was that, if a demon, he was only half of one. The man looked over at her. “Haven't we…met before…Kagome-sama?” Kagome gave a start as he continued. “As a matter of fact…. long ago…you visited my herb garden.” Kagome's eyes widened. “Jinenji-kun?” He nodded. “OK, just sign this…” He said, getting back to business, and slid a single sheet of paper toward her. She read it over quickly, and then signed her name. As though he was mocking wedding vows, he told her, “I now pronounce you, mother and son.” Kagome and Shippou both smiled. They left the orphanage and walked toward the Higurashi shrine. On the way, they passed an ice cream shop. Shippou saw it and beamed. “Please, Ka---I mean…. mom?” Kagome sighed. “I suppose.” She smiled at him and they went inside.

Later, back in the feudal era, Kagome was sitting at the campsite, restless. Inuyasha sat up in a tree, watching for danger. Miroku and Sango were both soundly asleep, Sango laying in Miroku's arms, Miroku's mouth and nose semi-buried in her hair. Kirara, in her larger form, was curled around the two as they slept, her two tails serving as blankets for the lovers. Shippou was snuggled in Kagome's lap, curled up in a little ball. She smiled and stroked the kitsune who was now her son. Suddenly, she felt rather ill. She gently placed Shippou on her sleeping bag and walked over to a bush, where her stomach rejected what little she had managed to eat for dinner that night. Inuyasha was worried. Was she sick? Kagome realized what this meant, even if Inuyasha didn't. She realized whose child it was going to be. She prayed fervently that InuYasha wouldn't.

Red eyes glared at a certain hanyou. Naraku smirked. “So…little Kagura has fallen in love.” He looked disgusted. `She falls in love even though her heart is mine.' He thought to himself. “I wonder if he even knows you exist?” He sneered coldly. “If he does, does he want you as much as I do?” Kagura's expression twisted into one of absolute revulsion. “You, Naraku? Don't make me laugh!” Naraku smirked. In one swift movement, she was pinned against the wall. She stared him down defiantly, refusing to scream as he took the one thing she valued. “You belong to me, Kagura. Do not forget this.” Only after he had left did she allow herself to dissolve into bitter tears. `Now Sesshoumaru will never love me. I've been defiled by the one being he hates most.'
Sesshoumaru sighed. Where was that cursed hanyou? He had been searching without stopping for a good three quarters of the day. Rin had fallen asleep hours ago, and was now being carried by her human caretaker, Miori. A few months earlier, Miori had saved Rin from starvation, and Sesshoumaru allowed her to travel with them to act as a caretaker and a companion. So far, the girl was doing much better than that stupid toad ever had.
He paused suddenly. Miori glanced at him. “Lord Sesshoumaru, what is it?” He didn't respond. On the wind, there were two scents. One was tears, and the other was blood.

Kagome told Inuyasha that she was going for a walk. She didn't say where, and he didn't ask. She started strolling down the path. One look ahead was enough to make her breath stop short. Jaken emerged from the bushes. He had been sent by Lord Sesshoumaru, and wasted no time in telling her this. He threw something to her, and hurried off. It was a necklace, bearing a sun carved out of wood. Kagome put it on, and went back to the campsite.

As she was heading back, she saw a demon. She reached for her bow, when it spoke. “Kagome-sama, I mean you no harm. But you bear the child of the taiyoukai, no? Be warned, for demons, pups are a sign of power, especially for great leaders. Be wary of the pup's father.” As soon as it had finished speaking, it was gone. Kagome thought about what she had just been told, then went back.
