I hope you guys liked the fluff-ish stuff last chapter, but now it's time to get back on track. I'm not so stumped anymore now, so all is goodish!
And I want to thank the new reviewers, Capt. Ap (by e-mail), and Akihana (yes, you can have your choice of cookies, dear ^_^).
And Madoise, Kagome shall eventually slap some sense into that silly hanyou : D.
Thank you all!
Disclaimer: Inuyasha stole my pack of cigs and therefore is disowned by me.
Chapter VIII: Dreams Coming to an End pt. 2
Kagome flew through the air, clutching on to Kirara's fur probably a little harder than she should have through her anxiety.
But Kirara did not protest, so she didn't pay much mind. The only thing she could clearly process at the moment was Inuyasha. She knew where he was going... she knew him too well not to know.
Kikyo.
Kagome felt the hurt fill her face...
She felt betrayed. She had been so sure because of last night's events, that they for sure had been getting somewhere... But Inuyasha had obviously proven her wrong...
Again... she thought with a jaded air.
She could no longer stand by the side-lines as Inuyasha threw his life away, though. She refused to accept his choice. Even if he just choose to stay alive with Kikyo's corpse... that would have been better than what he chose to do now...
It wasn't his fault... The whole mess between Kikyo and him was Naraku's fault... why can't Kikyo accept that...?
“Kirara, can you smell Inuyasha at all?” Kagome yelled over the rush of the wind, as Kirara roared in a positive response, veering off to the left and heading down into a forest.
Kirara had to find some sort of clearing before landing, and when she did she broke out into a run. Kagome felt the adrenaline rush through her veins, almost sure that they may crash into a tree at this speed... but she accepted the speed without complaining...
The quicker we go, the quicker we get there... And I have to stop him...
Kagome choked a little bit, mumbling out, “I can't live without you any longer...”
Kagome felt Kirara's pelt vibrate with a purr, as if for reassurance. Kagome leaned her body against Kirara's, trying her best to hug the large feline with some awkwardness. It was an unspoken thank you that Kirara fully understood. Words were not needed to express that sort of gratitude.
Kirara skidded to a halt in front of Inuyasha, who lifted his head in shock as they arrived. He looked rather blank for a moment, before he stammered out her name.
“K-Kagome?!”
“Inuyasha!!” Kagome shouted at him, causing his ears to flatten against his head in uneasiness. She was the last person he wanted to see at the moment...
Why is Kagome here?
He stood up, trying his best to look intimidating. But his confidence in himself was faltering, and he no longer had that infamous pride to back him up... so his attempts were rather in vein...
“What do you think you're doing?! You're sick! Go back to the village!”
Kagome stomped her foot weakly, glaring at him. “Inuyasha, are you an idiot?! Do you not think I can't see through your attitude already?!”
Inuyasha's mouth opened and closed a few times, before he snapped at her, “Do what I say, Kagome! This doesn't have anything to do with you!”
Kagome just about lost it then.
“OSUWARI!”
He yelped as he face-planted into the ground. Kagome fell to her knees, grabbing him by one ear and yanking hard to make sure she full and well had his attention.
And she had it one hundred percent.
“OW! BITCH, THAT HURTS!”
Kagome ignored him. “Inuyasha, I'm not stupid! I know you're going to Kikyo! So how does this not concern me, huh?! Tell me what you're thinking! What the heck could be going on in that thick skull of yours to think I can just stand by so easily?!”
Inuyasha snapped his mouth shut, the thick and silent tension in the air told Kagome all she needed to know.
“What's your problem, you prick?! What, you're just going to drop me so easily like that?! You were thinking you could just leave me in the forest, and I'd go back to the village and wait for you... and after you were gone for a few days, I'd miss you and get over it, huh?! HUH?! And then after that everything would be peachy?!”
Actually, that was exactly what he was thinking... and he stared heatedly at the ground in shame...
By now, Inuyasha could smell the salt in the air...
He began to peel himself off the ground slowly, but as soon as he did she screamed out the subduing spell again.
“I'M NOT DONE WITH YOU YET, SO YOU CAN JUST LIE THERE!”
Inuyasha growled threateningly. “I'm doing what I need to do, Kagome, so why don't you just mind your own fucking business?!”
Kagome yanked on his ear again, causing him to whine in pain. “Reality check, baka no! Because I need you!”
Inuyasha's eyes doubled in size as he glanced up at her... she had tears at the corners of her eyes and a large flush on her face. Her sapphire orbs were shining in passion and truth, trying to get him to realize what he exactly meant to her.
“But... Kagome...”
Kagome closed her eyes, trying to shut the protests out. She tried to keep them away from her broken heart.
Shut up, Inuyasha... just shut up...
“No buts, Inuyasha! Please... please, just come home with me...”
Because there is no longer a place I can call home if you're not in it with me...
Inuyasha tried to lift himself off the ground again, feeling his back creak in agony. He sighed heavily... “It's not that easy, Kagome...”
“And why not?!” She crossed her arms across her chest in objection.
Wincing, he finished what he had started, “...I was saying Kagome... Kikyo already knows where I am... She found me... and I told her already...”
Kagome's eyes opened again, widening in denial.
“Inuyasha...”
“She just left to go release some souls she had gathered earlier... she'll be here any moment...”
Kagome bit back the tears fiercely, and Inuyasha reached for her.
She smacked his hands away ardently, pulling from his grasp. He looked at her disbelieving, and then it changed to a small look of hurt and tension. His eyes seemed to liquefy, but he said nothing... he just knelt in front of her, watching her reaction.
“Don't touch me, Inuyasha!”
Again, he had hurt her...
He had actually gone to Kikyo for a few reasons...
... Not only to live up to his promise...
...But also, so he'd never hurt Kagome like this again...
But all he did was just hurt her more... wasn't there anything he could do just to take away the pain?
Inuyasha reached out to cup her face again, and at the contact she began to cry, shoving him away again.
“Kagome...” he spoke so softly to her, and his voice was like a hot iron against her chest every time he spoke to her that way...
“No! Inuyasha, don't touch me! Just... just don't do this, okay? Don't throw your life away...”
Inuyasha's eyes glazed over, shaking his head, as his ears perked forward at a new presence... Then Kirara turned to hiss at the intruder...
Kikyo, who was standing there watching the two for what was a while by then. She didn't really say anything when she was noticed, though. She just strode forward, gliding along the forest floor with an ethereal presence that filled the air.
Kagome turned to look at the dead priestess, standing up to face her gracelessly.. Kikyo looked at her calmly, and almost with lamentation.
Kagome just stared at her, and bit out at her, “How can you do this, Kikyo? Don't you love Inuyasha? Don't you want him to live a full life?”
Kikyo shook her head quietly, staring back at Kagome intensely. Resolution and an understanding far beyond Kagome's comprehension laid there.
“Kagome, it's no longer about living or dying. To me, it's about having Inuyasha's soul, to accompany me to hell... so I can be at peace with myself. So together, we can be in peace. That way we both can atone for our sins... So we can be reborn into something pure the next life, with clean slates. That way, Inuyasha will no longer have a guilt-ridden soul. Don't you understand that?”
Kagome shook her head angrily, refusing to understand. She didn't want to. He had no reason to feel guilty... if only they both could see it wasn't their faults...
“It's not either of your faults! It's Naraku's! Take Naraku to hell with you, not Inuyasha!”
“I'm sorry Kagome...” Kikyo spoke with the utmost honesty.
Kikyo threw up a barrier around Kagome before she could react. Kagome ran up against it, and began pounding on it with her tiny fists, howling out in outrage.
The barrier also purified Kirara, causing her to transform to her smaller version. This caused Kirara to become useless.
“Inuyasha! INUYASHA! IIE!”
Kikyo wrapped her arms around Inuyasha's waist, and Inuyasha fell into a deep trance-like slumber...
She gently laid her head against his shoulder, closing her eyes as well. The depths of hell opened up to her, inviting her inside.
“Inuyasha... I'm no longer afraid...”
Kagome kicked at the barrier, beat at the barrier... nothing would work...
If only she had brought her bow and arrows! If only!
Kagome searched around frantically. There had to be something, something, anything Anything would be useful right then!
Eyeing a fallen stick, she grabbed at it as if it were a lifeline. She allowed the purifying energy in her body to rush through it as she brought the tip of the stick down upon the barrier's side in defiance.
“Inuyasha, wait! Please! I'm coming!”
The conflicting energies bashed together... They cackled and swirling against each other, pushing at each other with a pink energy.
But in the end, Kikyo's won out.
Kagome was flung onto her back, tumbling on the ground some feet before she could stop.
Kirara mewed out at her in worry.
She wanted Kagome to stop or she was going to hurt herself...
And though Kagome kept beating at the barrier with all her might, it seemed absolutely useless... no matter what she did...
So all she could do was scream out his name as he was enveloped with the bright light, fading from her sight.
“INUYASHA! WAKE UP! NO! WAKE UP, INUYASHA, PLEASE!”
When a vivid light flashed throughout the area, blinding Kagome, she heard herself and Kikyo scream out in unison, “INUYASHA!”
Then all went eerily silent, consuming the area with a haunting atmosphere.
The barrier was gone, and Kagome fell to the ground, sobbing violently. A pain consumed her being for a moment, causing her vision to go white as she flinched and whimpered... she assumed it was from the emotional response, but she didn't care... She hung her head and clawed at the ground, as if almost trying to dig her way to hell...
She couldn't even look at the spot that took her beloved from her any longer...
...I just wanna disappear...
“Inu... Inuyasha... iie... no...”
Kirara's frantic mews brought her attention up, as she looked ahead of her...
And there laid Inuyasha's immobile body, very alive... and very intact...
“INUYASHA!”
She scrambled to her feet, tripping a bit along the way and coughing up some phlegm. She rolled Inuyasha onto his back, smacking his face lightly in an attempt to awaken him.
“Wake up! Wake up, please!”
He didn't respond.
Kagome called out to Kirara desperately, who raced to her side.
“Help me, Kirara, please...” Kagome struggled to sit Inuyasha up, holding him gently, brushing the bangs from his face. His face was still ever peaceful, and he breathed deeply. Though his skin was a bit pale to look at...
Kirara nuzzled the side of his face, but still he did not respond.
“Kirara lay down for me!”
Kirara obeyed as Kagome dragged his body with difficulty onto Kirara's back, and climbed on behind him.
Kirara took off into the air, flying with a haste Kagome had rarely seen... but she didn't notice once again, as all she could do was cradle Inuyasha's warm body to hers, caressing his face protectively and muttering for him to hold on just a bit longer.
When they landed in the village, Kagome called out to her friends like a mad-woman.
“SANGO! MIROKU! PLEASE! I NEED YOUR HELP!”
At being summoned, they ran outside to the sight of Kagome with a seemingly lifeless Inuyasha.
“Oh my God, what happened?!” Sango went to her friend's side, touching the hanyou's shoulder gently and giving it a slight shake.
Shippo came outside, staring in horror at the sight of Inuyasha. “Is he dead?!”
Miroku looked at the kit, and shook his head, “No, Shippo! Just go inside and get Kaede!”
Shippo nodded hesitantly, shaking like a leaf. He didn't move.
“Shippo, go!” The second command was all it took as Shippo sped off back inside the hut.
Kagome was weeping, right then as both her friends looked at her in question.
“I'll explain it all later... but please, help me... he's not waking up and I don't know why...”
Sango gasped and turned to look at Miroku, who looked back at her just as perplexed.
They both moved to the hanyou, Sango grabbing his arms as Miroku grabbed his feet and carried him into the hut.
An extremely distraught Kagome followed in their wake.
A/n: Ooooh, the plot thickens! What happened? Why didn't Inuyasha go to hell? Well, you'll just have to read in the next chapter to find out!
Dun dun dun! ^_^
***After I reread this and edited the chapter, I grew concerned because something didn't seem to flow right. I'll come back to it later. I have also started a new fic, a Sess/Kag fic. It's called `Without a Lullaby'. Look it up, hai? ^_^?
