Chapter 7: Tourniquet

The further west she walked, the denser the foliage became. The sun was high in the sky. Twilight would soon be upon her. It was time she began looking for somewhere to make camp. Onward she continued.

Finding a small clearing, she dropped her bow and arrows, and collapsed onto the ground, sitting cross-legged. Closing her eyes, she focused on her power. Meditation, Miroku once told her, was the best was to help train one's powers. Funny, she never believed it, until her mother told her the exact same thing. Though why she would doubt the word of her adoptive older, perverted brother was beyond her. Maybe it was because at some point this was all still just a dream to her. Or, maybe it was because if she became stronger, then she would no longer have to rely on Inuyasha to protect her. Whatever the reason, Kagome greatly regretted not following his advice. The seal on her powers was beginning to crack. She did not have much time left. She needed to master her powers. Fast.

As the sun sank lower into the horizon, Kagome's meditation intensified. Pure white flames formed, creating a wind that only effected her. As her concentration increased the white flames were joined by black and red that highlighted the white flames and whipped about her form. Her breathing became labored, as if she were running a great distance, and tears leaked out from behind her closed lids, to slide down her cheeks. As she began to hyperventilate, her tears turned to blood that burst into flames when it came into contact with the earth. The black highlights in the flames became dominant, overruling the red and white. In a burst of power, Kagome uttered a scream as her eyes shot open revealing bottomless black pits. One word formed on her lips; a name. With a wordless cry, more tears of blood streamed down her face as her power began to fluctuate erratically. As her power surged back into her body, her breathing steadied out and everything went blank. Her eyes flashed an intense red, as she stood and sped back the way she came.

~X~

When she came back to herself, she was standing in the middle of a battlefield, just as the sun was rising over the horizon. Blood and gore, not to mention various body parts of various demons littered the area in which she was standing. Blinking a few times, she looked around as her blue eyes soaked up her surroundings. The woods in which she was standing looked very familiar.

A sound behind Kagome, had her whirling around, her claws, laced with her miko held at ready as she made to attack the source of the noise. It was probably a stray demon that she missed. This was just like all of her other dreams, but she could feel that this was not the case.

//I tried to kill the pain

But only brought more//

The scene before her was too gruesome for her to bear. Blood made the soft grass slick, making it hard to maneuver without slipping. She was standing amidst a sea of death. Her back throbbed, as she moved; the gashes from two days prior hadn't had the chance to even begin to heal. She never bothered to clean them after they were initially injured. They were probably infected. The trees, or rather what was left of the trees in the area, looked familiar. Looking at the gargantuan tree that stood proudly before her, she realized that she was once again at the god tree. She was back at Kaede's village. How she did not know. As her eyes traveled down the tree, her eyes met a sight that made her utter a blood-curdling scream. Lying on the ground, next to what was now identified as the god tree were the bodies of Sango and Miroku.

//I lay dieing

And I'm pouring crimson regret and betrayal//

Dropping to her knees, Kagome looked with sightless eyes at her two fallen comrades. `They died. They're dead. I should have died too. I should have died with them. They died because of me. I should have been here with them,' she thought through her grief stricken haze.

Tears streamed down her face. Crawling over to Sango and Miroku, she saw that Sango was lying on top of Miroku. He must have died first. Poor Sango. She's seen too many people that she loved die. Two tears fell on Sango. Several more fell on Miroku.

//I'm dying praying bleeding and screaming

Am I too lost to be saved?//

With a choked sob, she turned her back on them. She couldn't stand the sight anymore. Behind her, where her tears fell glowed a white light that slowly spread over their bodies. With a scream of rage, Kagome's tears turned to blood that burned the remains of the demons around her. The flames quickly spread, devouring all of the demon remains, and blood. Everything else was left untouched.

//Am I too lost?//

A groan was heard behind Kagome, but she was too lost in her grief to notice. Neither did she notice the approach of Kaede and several village men who came to investigate the screams. A collective gasp of shock was heard from the villagers at the display of power and the flames that were slowly making their way back to Kagome to reenter her body. She whirled around, startled. Uttering another choked sob, Kagome looked upon Kaede's withered face with relief before she collapsed from exhaustion.

//My god my tourniquet

Return to me salvation//

She moaned softly, as she tossed and turned. She was in familiar surroundings, she could tell. But she knew she wasn't safe. There was a threatening presence nearby. Opening her eyes swiftly, when she heard a board creak, she sighed softly in relief. It was just Kaede. She was hunched over something. It looked like a person from this distance, but Kagome couldn't tell. Then without warning, everything came rushing back to her without warning. With a strangled gasp, Kagome quickly rose, and swiftly left on silent feet. When Kaede turned, she was already gone. Her words left unspoken. The happy look on her face quickly replaced by a worried frown.

//My god my tourniquet

Return to me salvation//

Running. She was running again. She needed to get away. She needed to get away before he caught up with her again. But she was already too late. She knew it. He was right behind her. And hr was gaining. Fast. There was no way she could out run him. Then realization dawned on her. He was toying with her.

//Do you remember me?

Lost for so long//

She nimbly dodged under low-lying branches and felled, rotting tree trunks. She needed to find a place to hide, quickly. But fate was not on her side. Her back was throbbing painfully from its' latest additions to it's lovely collection. She could feel herself grow weak from blood-loss and overexertion. She wouldn't make it. Tears of fire and blood streamed down her face.

//Will you be on the other side?

Or will you forget me//

A blur of red sailed over her head, to land before her, blocking her path. `Shit,' was her only coherent thought. With time to react, Kagome barely managed to skid to a stop before she ran head first into Inuyasha's chest. As it was her nose stopped barely a few centimeters from said chest. That would have hurt.

"Kikyou," he called.

What the fuck?

Confusion reigned, as Kagome nearly fell over in her shock. No way in hell did he just call her Kikyou. Did he? Looking back she saw that Kikyou was nowhere in sight. `Bastard,' she seethed. In a burst of power she did a back bend, kicking Inuyasha in the face as she made her way back to her feet from her handstand. He was stunned. So was she. Where the hell did she learn to do that? Since, when was she so flexible? He was frozen. She ran.

//I'm dying praying bleeding and screaming

Am I too lost to be saved?

Am I too lost?//

It didn't take him long to recover and then he was hot on her trail again. Black began to fog over her vision, and she desperately shook her head to clear it. Now she understood. With an enraged snarl Kagome's eyes flashed black with red arcs of power jumping out of her eyes and around her. They were leading her into a trap.

A shriek was heard in the distance, and Kagome smirked in triumph. A burst of white light shot up through a clearing as souls quickly fled the area. It may not have been enough to kill Kikyou, but it was enough to weaken her significantly. The bitch would be out of her hair for a while. Now all she had to worry about was Inuyasha.

//My god my tourniquet

Return to me salvation//

Even now, when she was running for her life, she still felt that familiar stab of pain in her heart. Gah! When would her soul heal? When would she be free of his curse? Ducking under a low branch, she cursed under her breath. She needed to focus damnit! IF she didn't she would die! If she died then Miroku and Sango's lives would have been in vain.

//My god my tourniquet

Return to me salvation//

Her heart ached at the thought of them and her pace slowed. The pain was too great. Trying to shut her mind down Kagome attempted to run on autopilot. She needed to get this under control. Locking her friends' memories in a large, LARGE box with an equally large warning notice, she picked up speed once more. However, she did not know how long her body could maintain that kind of speed, or for how long. Her back pulsed with her physical pain. She needed to find shelter and quick!

//My wounds cry for the grave

My soul cries for deliverance

Will I be denied Christ?

Tourniquet

My suicide//
