Chapter 2 – A Persistent Prince
Iroke stood for a moment, utterly confused. Had she just turned him down? Was she consorting with youkai? Anger welled within him. She was going to be his if it was the last thing he did. He stormed back to his carriage and after telling the driver to follow the woman, he slumped back in his seat, glaring at his companion. “You’re certain she is the perfect one?”
The hood that shadowed the face of the other passenger moved slowly up and down. Iroke was getting bored with the silence of the man. He hardly ever talked and never in Iroke’s presence at least showed his face. The man had only recently come in the employ of his father but thus far his advice had been extremely accurate and Iroke knew that if the strange man indicated that Akari should be his bride then she would be.
“What was that about?” Inu Yasha grumbled, as they continued on to the village.
The hanyou had taken both of their bags without being asked, an indication that he was upset. “I don’t know. He just appeared out of nowhere and told Akari that she was going to be his wife.”
Inu Yasha snorted. “If Sesshomaru finds out he’s bird food.”
Akari smiled. “Does that mean you are starting to think favorably of your brother, Inu Yasha?”
He snorted again and didn’t answer. A hopeful look passed between the two girls. The hanyou’s ears swiveled to catch a sound behind him and they both heard the growl rumble from his chest. “You’re friend is back Akari. I’m going ahead. If I stay I’ll hurt him.”
With that the inu hanyou streaked ahead, as Kagome and Akari kept walking. The carriage pulled up beside them and they heard the prince’s voice tell the driver to go slowly. The dark haired man leaned out the window with a haughty look on his face. “Please my lady, may we at least speak a little? I just wish your company for at least a small time,” he pleaded.
Kagome rolled her eyes at Akari and walked a little faster. Akari sighed and stopped. Maybe if she did he would go away. She did not want him to be around next time Se came to visit. The prince ordered the driver to stop and opened the door of the carriage, holding a hand out to her. Ignoring the hand she climbed into the cab and settled into the seat across from the prince. As her eyes adjusted to the darkness she realized that the prince was not alone. Sitting beside him was a person, dressed him concealing robes with a hood obscuring its face. There was something familiar about the person but Akari couldn’t place it. The prince’s voice shook her from her thoughts. “Thank you Akari,”
“Just go to the village. We can talk there,” she cut him off, ignoring the indignant look that flashed in his dull green eyes.
They all watched the carriage go with relief. Akari leaned against the wall, putting a hand to her forehead. “Kami he was annoying!”
“I for one am certainly glad he is gone,” Miroku said from the spot he had been meditating in. Prince Iroke had even seemed to wear on Miroku’s nerves, even though the houshi usually had great patience. Akari had insisted her friends remain while Iroke offered his proposal again and again but Miroku had left halfway through the conversations under the pretense of missing his daily meditations.
“If he shows his face around her again…” Inu Yasha snarled from the roof top.
They all nodded sympathetically. The prince had certainly made his dislike of youkai and hanyou’s evident. “Kagome, didn’t you say you brought presents for everyone?” Akari asked, turning the conversation to something happier.
Her diversion worked and soon Kagome was passing out her gifts to her delighted friends. Akari’s mind again turned to her previous mission. Fate had not returned to her after that night. She had no idea if her presence was enough to prevent whatever disaster Fate had foreseen. This was the reason why she had not just left with Sesshomaru. She wanted to stay close to Kagome, to see if maybe she could figure out what she could do to change the future without Kagome’s death. Kagome called her name and Akari went into Kaede’s hut, putting Prince Iroke out of her mind.
Prince Iroke however could not get Akari out of his. The prince was determined that he would have her for his bride. Already he was forging plans. She had given him no reason why she could not marry him, just said that she could not. A grin twisted his lips as he thought of a plan that would make her indebted to him and was guaranteed to make her see him as a hero. It would mean consorting with youkai but if in the end he obtained Akari, then he could soil himself a bit. “Yes,” he said to his still silent companion, “It’s perfect.”
