Chpt 2. Killing me softly
Kagome's eyes fluttered open and she stared at the bare ceiling above her. Her surrounding were familiar. She was in her and Inuyasha's room in the penthouse condominium of Tanakura Plaza in downtown Tokyo. She could look to her left and see the breadth of the city from the 50th floor and turn right to gaze at the football field of space she called her home. Kagome rubbed her eyes irritably.
Another day...another morning...
Two years had passed since the incident in the nightclub. Sesshomaru was gone-on sabbatical somewhere in Europe his office said before turning his position as the head of Tanakura Enterprises over to Inuyasha. Inuyasha hated his brother more than words could ever express, but he would have been crazy to turn the offer down. He was, after all, a member of the Tanakura family and the company bylaws clearly stated that only family members could hold the controlling interest in the company. In fact, it seemed that Sesshomaru had left with no unclear instructions-Inuyasha was calling the shots...at least until he returned. It was a huge undertaking for him, making his construction company look like a child's toy in comparison to the multi-billion dollar a year conglomerate. But he did what came naturally-dove in headfirst and asked questions later. In fact, he was doing a remarkable job from anyone's viewpoint. Revenues were up and profit margins increase 4%--no small feat when that translated into $17 billion additional dollars in less than a year.
Things were no less spectacular between he and Kagome. A year after his appointment, Inuyasha got down on bended knee at the company Christmas party he insisted on throwing as a symbol of his new management and presented her with an eight carat purplish blue diamond ring that exactly matched the color of her eyes. She had beamed-Of course she would marry him! -accepting on the spot.
But eight months later, she still had not agreed to a wedding date. Kagome sighed, remembering her argument with the hanyou, despondent over her lack of interest in becoming his wife-Come on Kags, do I have to wait 'till I'm old? I'm already gray!
She looked at the sparkling rock on her finger, the gorgeous plushness of her bed, and the muscled form gently dreaming besides her. Her life was perfect. Why shouldn't she get married and solidify everything? Why not make the love of her life happy?
Inuyasha stirred gently, opening his amber orbs to gaze at Kagome...his Kagome.
"Morning, koi..." He mumbled sleepily and nuzzled her neck in affection. Taking over Tanakura Enterprises was a great job, but he seldom got back from the office before 2:00 AM-only enough time to catch a glimpse of his love before sinking into an exhausted heap on the bed, clothes and all. He always woke up under the covers and undressed-she would get up to make certain that he was comfortable-and he silently thanked the gods for putting her in his life. Inuyasha truly didn't know where he would have been if he had never met her that one time long ago when he had been a jerk and she nearly fired him with her miko powers. He smirked when he recalled the fire in her eyes, the fierce independence that struck his core. She was just like me...
Kagome nuzzled back, gently stroking his cheek. "Morning, love.'
His early morning erection bumped against her hip and he turned to her, drawing her warm body in to his. He didn't want to let her go.
Their lips found each other and connected slowly drawing the simmering heat between them into a whirlwind of passion that escalated further as Inuyasha covered her with hot, open kisses, licking and exploring the curves that he loved so dearly. Kagome arched as one fang grazed a stiffened nipple wanting more-Don't kiss it, bite it damn you! -but she knew Inuyasha would never give in to his primal instincts after that fateful night two years ago and simply pressed his head forward to engulf more of her burning mound.
His hand slipped under her thigh and two digits entered her core, undulating gently and sending her lower body into a smooth rhythm. She whimpered as his mouth came back to hers to kiss and fondle hers while his fingers continued the erotic game between her legs. He slipped a third digit in-her limit-and began to pump in earnest as her breath grew ragged.
"Gods, Inuyasha..."
Kagome lifted each foot to rest on Inuyasha's thighs as she thrust backwards and forwards into his waiting hand. The terrible tightening of her passion was spiraling to the snapping point, her breath was hitching...just a minute more...
Inuyasha withdrew his hand and she snapped at him primally, biting into his upper arm hard enough to draw blood. He grunted-she was going to be difficult this morning-but paid no heed as he dipped his hips and thrust forward, burying himself to the hilt in her wet tightness.
Kagome mewled in satisfaction-the sense of filling, the hardness of his member sent intense waves of pleasure rippling through her body. She wanted more, had to have more of his body.
"Harder, Yahsa! Faster!"
Inuyasha grunted in compliance, pistoning into her with his youkai speed and force, burning holes into the mattress and the writhing form beneath him. Kagome's teeth chattered underneath him, twisting her mouth back in a tiny "O" as he flipped her on her stomach and pounded her again.
She felt the slats of the bed strain and then crack, the legs giving way and falling in a heap-Damn, that's the third one this month -as Inuyasha twirled her ninety degrees, propping her thigh against his shoulder and delivered a blinding thrust that rocketed her to the farthest recesses of oblivion. His roar of completion reverberated throughout the penthouse, and Kagome silently thanked Totosai for having the foresight to suggest that she soundproof her barrier along with the standard anti-evil warding spells.
Kagome slumped on the ruined bed, Inuyasha panting heavily besides her. They always had phenomenal sex in the morning.
He, as always, was the first to move with is boundless youkai energy.
"Come on Kags, we're already late!"
"Don't you mean that you're late. I don't have any appointments at the crack of dawn."
"You know what I mean. It's almost 8:00. The day's waiting! Get the lead out!" Inuyasha bounded into the bathroom, turning on the shower to let it warm up. He always tested the water before he let her in to make sure it wouldn't scald or freeze her. Just one of the zillions of reasons that she was the luckiest woman on the planet.
"You know you're really irritating first thing in the morning?" Kagome grumbled as she followed him inside.
"Really? And I thought that was only when I wasn't 'hard' or 'fast' enough for you..."
Kagome slapped him playfully on the ass and reached up for a kiss.
"Yeah, that too..."
She felt his limp manhood harden once again as she pressed against him in the steamy enclosure of the shower. This was going to be a long morning...

"Here you go, boss. It just appeared in the mail today, no postmark or anything. Kind of strange. I'd be careful of whatever it's trying to sell if I were you."
Sango handed the ornate black envelope to Kagome with a shrug of mystery. It seemed very odd to receive a letter with no obvious address, postmark, or indication of origin at all at a night club of all places. The only things that generally came were bills, and Sango mistrusted this new piece of correspondence for some reason.
"Thanks, Sango. You're always looking out for me." Kagome hugged the woman who had become much more than an employee to her over the past two years. Since the fateful nightclub incident, Inuyasha insisted on having a general manager around for when he was not there to help Kagome with the crowds. She tried to fight with him, but one glance from his anger-laced eyes let her know that it would not be an argument that she would win, and she acquiesced on the condition that she and she alone would chose the person she would work with. Sango radiated strength, savvy, and beauty and Kagome was instantly drawn to her when she met her. Having her there was like finding her older sister, and Kagome actively worked to earn her trust, respect, and her friendship-which she needed above anything else. The past two years had been lonely even with Inuyasha and his spiral to success. She could afford more than she ever thought she could, but she didn't have anyone to share it with outside of him. Sango was Kagome's anchor. She was her best friend. Her only friend.
"The rum is late, Ryoko won't be coming today, and the bulbs for the light show just blew out. We've got a ton of work to do."
"OK. Let me just put my stuff down and I'll be right there."
Kagome walked to her office, absently rifling through the rest of the mail before turning her attention back to the mysterious black package that was given to her. She smoothed her fingers over it-the paper was textured and thick, obviously hand-dyed and very expensive. She couldn't see a return address or a delivery address for that matter-or any form of seam or opening to get to the letter's contents. All in all, a mystery. And kind of creepy if I do say so myself...
Kagome flipped it over in her hand one more time and was about to file it away when a glint of gold caught her eye. She gazed at the letter again, nearly dropping it in fear as a message appeared in 18 carat gold script on the front.
Mme. Kagome Yumiko Higurashi
Club Ryuutaisho
To be addressed upon delivery
"What the hell?!"
The envelope glowed an eerie orange for a moment, and Kagome looked to see the seams of the envelope coming undone, inviting her to peek at the contents inside. She slipped her fingers in and withdrew a single piece of paper the same color and texture of the envelope. Holding it to her eyes, the message slowly appeared as if it were being written before her, an invisible being transcribing their words for her as she stood.
Your presence is requested at Kikyo's this evening at 7:00 pm. Formal evening attire and a car will be ready for your disposal.
This meeting shall be strictly confidential.
Regards,
Sesshomaru Tanakura
Just as quickly as the writing appeared, it vanished-a huge celestial eraser destroying the contents. The envelope glowed once more and was gone. No trace of even aura or yoki surrounding it.
Kagome's heart stopped. Had she seen that right? Had that letter been from Sesshomaru? The Sesshomaru who had disappeared two years ago to the day-the anniversary of that fateful night?
Gods, she hoped so.
Sango knocked on the door, poking her head in to see what happened to the normally hyperactively perky woman who was slumped against her desk with a look of faintness painted on her face.
"Is everything all right? I thought I...felt something."
Kagome looked up. She was beginning to lie already.
"Yeah, everything's fine. Let's get to work."
***
The car pulled up and waited for her in dark silence, making her think of the demon horses that awaited unsuspecting souls to drag them screaming into the pits of hell. It was an inky and unnatural black color that seemed to absorb the very air around it as if no joy, no hope could be found in the inner recesses that it covered. After begging some type of lame excuse to Sango, Kagome had waited outside to see what ride was picking her up. She half expected to see the great demon lord drive up himself, though she knew that her would never lower himself to that.
The super-long Maybach opened to her on its own accord and Kagome stepped into the inky darkness. A double-headed dragon demon turned four lazy eyes towards her, tongue snaking out to taste her presence. Sensing her benevolent aura, it cracked into what could have been a smile and then handed her an ornately wrapped package and another black envelope. Kagome accepted with a nervous smile as the demon turned both heads back before him, easing the car into waiting traffic. The dividing partition between them began to go up and Kagome panicked as she beat against the glass.
"Wait! Wait, please!"
The envelope in her had glowed and she jumped back for a moment, completely alone with a piece of paper that took on a life of its own.
Mme. Kagome Yumiko Higurashi
To be addressed within the care of AhUn
As its companion before, this letter opened and a black note slid out onto Kagome's lap. She picked it up to read the message that would appear only for her.
As per the earlier invitation, formal attire has been arranged for this evening. Please find all of the necessary garments for your inspection.
I look forward to seeing you again.
Sesshomaru Tanakura
Just as before the message vanished as soon as it appeared and the envelope itself disappeared in a magical cloud. Kagome ripped through the ornate gold wrapping to reveal a small wooden chest. Opening the chest, she gasped. The dress inside was a deep blue Chanel original flown in from Paris. This was not their haute couture-this was their original couture, one of the designs that had put them on the map in the 40s and 50s with starlets and presidential wives alike. Only this one was not the trademark pink of a Marylin Monroe, but the darkened blue of her eyes and the midnight sky. It must have cost a fortune to have them open their vault to produce the gown, much less to dye it a custom color. On top of the silk and chiffon dress was a Harry Winston diamond sapphire brooch with matching earrings that complimented the dress perfectly. She had been drooling over the combo for some time, but thought that it was a little rich even for her blood. But now, the $6 million trinkets were hers, a token from a man who she was forbidden but was dying to see. She pulled out the matching Chanel pumps and clutch, and was getting undressed when she noticed that there were two lacy undergarments that dropped from under the volumes of material. La Perla...Kagome liked their style, and was secretly happy that she had a new pair to add to her collection. At least he has taste ...She mused until she noticed one odd thing...the panties were crotchless...
Maybe this isn't such a good idea... The little voice in her head would, of course, pipe up now.
Ya think? She shot back sarcastically. Gods, what did she get herself into now?
But it was too late. Kagome could see the outline of the elegant restaurant as it loomed a half block in front of her. It's now or never...
Screwing up her courage, she began to undress hoping that her curiosity would be sated this night and that she could forever say goodbye to her dreams of a certain golden-eyed demon lord...
***
The inside of the restaurant was magnificent. Crystal chandeliers diffused brilliant light into the almond curves of the ornate furniture and rich cherrywood that was the restaurant's trademark. Highly trained waiters who suffered on year-long waitlists to be given the opportunity to serve carried plates of foreign delicacies high on their shoulders, the pride of serving at the great Kikyo's etched on their faces. A restaurant of world cuisine, one could order a traditional Japanese, Asian fusion, or even South American dish and have it appear within minutes. Kikyo's did not have a menu-it didn't need one. Gossip said that there was a powerful demon in the kitchen who could simply conjure the ingredients it needed, prepare them, and cook them itself with its many tentacles, but no one had ever been back in the kitchen to be able to tell. At least, no one had been and come back alive.
Kagome sauntered in in her impeccable creation and waited for her host. Or in this case, her hostess. The mighty Kikyo herself came to greet her at the door.
"Good evening, Ms. Higurashi. It is a honor for you to grace my establishment once again. Your table has been prepared. Please follow me."
Even with the elegant settings, Kagome couldn't help the wave of distaste that flew from her when she faced the restaurant's proprietor. Kikyo Nagamichi was nearly her twin in every way. They shared the same height and bone structure, long ebony hair and bowed lips, but that was where the similarities ended. Kikyo was cold and detached, a bitter shell of a woman whose flat eyes haunted even those who had worked with her since the beginning of her establishment. Inuyasha loved to eat and entertain at the restaurant, and Kagome could see that it was partly because Kikyo looked so much like her that it put him at ease. But she couldn't help but feel that the woman always regarded her with hatred and envy. As if she should have been on Inuyasha's arm rather than Kagome, that she should have had the life with the hanyou, and not the woman currently gracing his arm.
She followed her as Kikyo weaved through the room, passing ornate settings to the left and the right. They were making their way to the back of the restaurant, towards the forbidden kitchen.
Kami, where are we going?
Just before the entrance to the kitchen where Kagome was sure an octopus demon was waiting with a cleaver to slice her in two for daring to invade his sacred space, Kikyo stopped in front of a plain cherrywood wall.
"Open." She commanded and the powerful barrier that she had erected shimmered and fell. Kagome's jaw dropped a little as Kikyo pushed into the wall and opened a door that led her to an ornate oval-shaped room...and a frighteningly intense pair of golden eyes.
Kagome thought she would melt on site. Sesshomaru was in a black on black tuxedo that only caused the haunting silver of his hair to stand out more starkly against the backdrop of his skin. His crescent moon seemed to glow in the pale candlelight as he stood to greet her, and his eyes...well, they were a statement unto themselves.
"Thank you, Kikyo. That will be all for now."
The hostess bowed respectfully and turned to leave, only glancing once to the twin that she wanted to eradicate...and now had the ammunition to possibly do so.
"Good evening Kagome. I trust that you have been well?"
Sesshomaru seemed to float over to her as he motioned her to sit at the table for two that had been set in the middle of the oval expanse of the room. Even for Kikyo's the room was lavish, decorated in dark blues, blacks, and silvers that shimmered in the dim light of the candles gracing her table.
"Why are you here, Sesshomaru?"
"I trust you liked the dress?"
"Please answer my question."
He stared at her impassively before responding.
"I needed some time to do some research. I have completed my study. It is time for me to return to my life."
"Research on what?"
"Why have you not married my brother, Kagome?"
The question caught her totally off guard. This was thin ice, and Kagome knew it.
"I think it's time for me to go."
Kagome stood, excusing herself from the table as Sesshomaru rose to meet her, hand extended as if in goodbye. She took his hand to complete the pleasantry and her pulled her to him, one arm cradling her back as the other deftly held her outstretched hand. He pulled her in closer, his breath hot on her neck.
"Leaving so soon?" Sesshomaru's saccharine tone grated against her ears...Damn, why does he know my every desire? "You would leave me without one last dance?"
Kami,not again...
It was a trap. A complete setup and she knew it-walked right into it. As if on cue, the beat hit her before the words. Dark and tortured, painful in its essence. Kagome's breath hitched in her throat. She knew this song.
I heard he sang a good song, I heard he had a style.
The deep come-hither voice of Lauyrn Hill stabbed her deep in her soul. The pain...her pain...was as fresh and raw as the emotions Kagome felt swirling in her soul...
And so I came to see him and listen for a while.
"Marry Inuyasha. My brother will need someone to care for him and keep him well away from my affairs."
And there he was this young boy, a stranger to my eyes.
It was as it had been two years ago. Sesshomaru moving, twirling her to his desire, his waist and thighs dictating her every move, every step...
Strumming my pain with his fingers,
"What?!!"
Bass beat hitting in the pit of her stomach...
(one time, one time)
"Stop your stalling and marry him. The sooner it is done, the less anxiety you will feel. Do you not desire him?"
Treble searing her back to him...
singing my life with his words,
"Yes, but...but what are you proposing? That I cheat on him with you? What about vows...what about children?"
(two time, two time)
"Vows have no place in this. And you will not bear his children. You will bear mine."
"Don't you think that will look a little suspicious when they come out with crescent marks looking remarkably like you, rather than their father?"
killing me softly with his song,
"Striking family resemblance."
killing me softly with his song,
"I can't do that."
telling my whole life with his words,
"Yes, actually, you can."
"And what about me? What would that make me?"
killing me softly with his song
Kagome whirled to face him full on, looking deep into the molten gold of his eyes...
"My slave."
The shock shook her to the core. He face flushed a deep crimson of suppressed rage.
I felt all flushed with fever, embarrassed by the crowd,
"This is nonsense. I knew I shouldn't have come."
I felt he found my letters and read each one out loud.
Kagome ripped herself from his embrace and was gone, speeding to the door with the intention of never coming back, never seeing the mocking face that shamed her so ever again. She was almost there...almost to freedom...
I prayed that he would finish but he just kept right on.
"You never told him about your father, did you?"
Strumming my pain with his fingers,
Kagome stopped cold. Please, Kami tell me he doesn't know...not him...anyone but him...
"You never told him how he really died."
(one time, one time)
Please gods, no...
Kagome felt as if someone was ripping out her heart as she turned to face the man destroying her...destroying her with simple words...
singing my life with his words,
"What, does he think that it was a burglar? That it was an accidental shooting? That is what she told the police, isn't it? Your mother? She told them that she thought it was a burglar in the house and shot your father accidentally, right? That's what you told him, isn't it? That's what you let him believe."
(two time, two time)
His voice was soft enough to caress a newborn child, but Kagome felt it stripping her of her flesh, exposing her bones to the cold, unfeeling world.
killing me softly with his song,
"How-how did you know?"
"Research, Kagome, research... It didn't take much to find the hospital records. It did take awhile to find all of them, seeing as you moved around at least twice a year since you were three or four...when the rumors first started spreading and people fist started putting two and two together."
"N-no.."
killing me softly with his song,
"Yes. Every time a teacher began to recognize the marks and bruises, every nurse who asked too many questions...every person who showed a bit too much interest and poof..." He snapped his fingers, knifing her heart, "the Higurashis were gone."
"Isn't that the real reason you dated Miroku Hito? Or even better, married Naraku Onigumo? A lecher and an abuser. The perfect combination. Home sweet home."
"Noooo..." The words came out low and tear-laden. Kagome was shaking with uncontrolled rage at the being who was ripping her to shreds by just existing.
telling my whole life with his words,
"Isn't that why you ran away from home? Why you left your mother and brother at the mercy of a 'new' daddy?"
"Noooooooo..."
killing me softly with his song
"Isn't that why it was you and not your mother? Your gun-the same one you keep in the nightclub to keep you safe. Isn't that why you killed your father?"
"NOOOOOOOOO!!!"
Kagome emitted a ball of energy large enough to purify an entire city block, but Sesshomaru sidestepped it easily before he disappeared and reappeared directly in front of her. The ball of energy was absorbed in the demonic shield he had erected and he stared at her with all of the intensity of the seven hells.
"You are naked before me, woman."
Strumming my pain with his fingers,
"I can see you for who you truly are."
(yes he was)
"And I desire you nonetheless."
singing my life with his words,
Kagome was sinking, dying. She couldn't do this-it would kill Inuyasha. It would kill her. But in her heart he was saying, offering her everything she ever wanted. He was giving her permission to be herself-the sick, twisted, physically molested, and emotionally abused woman that she knew herself to be. That she had tried to eradicate and dismiss. But that lurked in the shadows ready to be embraced.
He was her father figure. And she was his child.
Kagome couldn't do anything or see anything. The world was lost in the sea of her tears and her aching heart as she heaved at a loss so profound she felt she would die. She mourned for the loss of her peaceful life and wonderful husband. At the coming turbulence that she could see...
...and that she was about to accept.
Sesshomaru's iron claws grasped her shoulders, pulling her up to her feet. He knew her decision. He had known it since that night at the club two years ago. Pulling her to him, he stroked her hair and purred soothingly. The hardest part was over. She realized that she was his. There was only one last thing to do.
killing me softly with his song,
"This will be painful, Kagome. I must mark you where he will not see." Sesshomaru turned Kagome's back to him, nuzzling her hair gently and pinpointing the area where he would place his mark. She exhaled gently, reveling in the touch that felt so right. With that he sank his fangs deep into the shallow skin at the base of her skull that was obscured by her thick, ebony locks.
The bundles of nerves at the top of her spine screamed, and a vocal shriek of pain erupted from Kagome's mouth. She saw stars as his poison dripped into the wound slowly, making it a permanent seal of possession. She was limp against him as he licked the wounds to close them, tears streaming down her face from the throbbing headache that ensued.
Kami, help me...
killing me softly with his song,
Sesshomaru crushed her to him, his breath hot on her ear as he spoke, words ringing with definition in her mind.
"You must know what it means to be mine, miko. You are not to eat unless I tell you, speak unless I command it, move unless I have willed it. Your heart, your soul, and your mind belong to me for now and forever. Do you understand?"
telling my whole life with his words,
She nodded weakly and he released her in a whirl, dismissing her from his warmth.
"Go. Prepare for your wedding. I will call for you when I am ready."
Kagome ran away as quickly as she could, her mind shattered into pieces. Go...run..away...
A voice-his voice-rang cold as ice down her back.
killing me softly with his song
"Kagome. My brother is not to touch you before your wedding night. Not a touch, not a kiss. Do not have me smell his scent anywhere on you, otherwise...your punishment will be more than even you can imagine."
Her tears were the signs of her defeat, any will that she had gone in the room that she left with the demon lord. Sesshomaru watched her depart, satisfaction huge and heavy in his chest. He had the woman who haunted his dreams exactly as he wanted, exactly as he had dreamed night after painful night of unsated desire for two years-stripped, naked, and in his control. Let the games begin...
