Chapter: An Unexpected Visit

Inuyasha growled as he sensed the presence of a nearby by demon. His ears twitched slightly as he rose to his feet, his companions rising as well.

"I sense a demon, a powerful one." Miroku stated, his eyes sweeping the area. His muscles were tense as he prepared himself for any attack, mentally or physically. He spun around as he heard Inuyasha breathed one word…Sesshoumaru…

Inuyasha's golden eyes flashed as his brother came into view. He had already long ago smelled, flexing his claws; he laid his hand on the hilt of the Tessaiga. That's when he sensed Kagome returning. Deciding to get this over with his brother fast, he charged and lashed out at him, Tessaiga fully blown.

A shimmering blue shield reflected the blast of Tessaiga off back into the forest. "It is foolish to attack your opponent head on."

Inuyasha growled, and tried to break the shield again, useless. "What the hell are you doing here Sesshoumaru?"

His ears twitched again as he picked up Kagome's soft footsteps behind him, and her warm flower like scent. "Stay back Kagome." His attention refocusing back onto his half brother.

"Kagome-chan!" Came a high pitched squeal, and a little girl came running from behind Sesshoumaru.

"Rin." Sesshoumaru said, and he watched as she stopped just before leaving the shield.

Kagome looked at Inuyasha with pleading eyes, and watched as he lowered the Tessaiga somewhat. She gave him a small smile as she crouched down; her arms open for the little cutie. Rin, in turn, then gave Sesshoumaru the same pleading look and grinned wildly when he nodded only a fraction.

Rin ran out of the shield and into Kagome's awaiting arms.

"Miko, Rin requested of me if she could visit with you. I have told her yes, only if you allow." Stated Sesshoumaru coolly as he watched Kagome's expressions.

"Of course she may see me, I do not mind."

"Kagome." Inuyasha growled out. 'If this little girl was going to stay around then that would mean Sesshoumaru would be too. I cannot have him around, just waiting for me to have my guard down so he can steal the Tessaiga.'

Kagome shot him another pleading look, this time giving him a pouting lip. Inuyasha only glared back at her. Kagome huffed. "Come on Rin, I have someone I would like you to meet." She took Rin's hand and led her back to the hut.

Miroku, meanwhile, had just stood by and watched what had progressed. He was still on his guard, but believed Sesshoumaru's words for only wanting to fulfill the little girl's request. 'Seems as if he may not be the Ice Prince after all, not with this little girl.'

Inuyasha stormed after Kagome, ready to give her a piece of his mind when he heard her.

"You try to stop me and I will break your back." She half hissed at him. Understanding that he does not trust his brother but if a child is involved then that doesn't matter. Plus, even though he has tried to kill her on more than one occasions…he somewhat erased them by saving her life. Inuyasha considered her words for a moment; he'd rather not be in a crater if Sesshoumaru tried to make a move.

'But I am sure as hell going to have a talk with her later…'

Sesshoumaru stood back, watching the very brief argument between the hanyou and the girl. Mild amusement flashed in his eyes only a half of a second before settling back to their iciness. He glanced at the monk who stood watching him. Irritated by the monk's stare, he glared at him.

Mirou, knowing when to quit, quickly turned and walked away.

Inuyasha glared back at his brother, who stood there so quietly. "I know what you are up to Sesshoumaru, but the girl's 'request' will not fool me. You came here to steal the Tessaiga, and I'll be damned if you will."

"Little brother, if I came here for the Tessaiga, you would be nothing but a pulp of flesh and blood at my feet. And I would stand in glory with the Tessaiga while licking your blood from my claws." His voice had an underlying promise hidden beneath the words.

Inuyasha growled, baring his fangs at his brother. If there were anyone else who were present but the two, they would not understand the meaning of this gesture, only those of inu-youkai could comprehend. He had just accepted the promise of death with a laugh and daring him to try.

The muscles in Sesshoumaru's hand flexed slightly as he forced his more primal side not to react on the gesture now, but save for later. He truly did not wish to seek out the Tessaiga, only coming for Rin's sake.

Inuyasha gave one last growl before running off after Kagome who had longed left. He followed her scent out to an open field where he saw her against a tree. She was counting.

"7, 8, 9, 10! Ready or not here I come!" She turned around, her eyes crossing the field as she searched for any signs of the two children.

Inuyasha watched as she looked under bushes and other small shrubbery that littered the field. He was relaxed and quite amused as he watched her search. He knew exactly where the two were; the muted giggles were hard to miss when one had such sensitive ears.

Kagome huffed in frustration. 'Where are they?' A chuckle made her look up. There was Inuyasha sitting under a tree, and he was laughing at her!

"You think this is funny, don't you? Why don't you try and find them?"

"I already know where they are." He flashed her a grin, his fangs peeking from underneath his lips.

Kagome pouted. "That's not fair, you have those damned ears and powerful nose and I don't!" She stomped her feet like a child and plopped down on the ground.

Sesshoumaru, who had masked his scent, flew high above. He watched with ever more curiosity at how this young woman was acting. Earlier she was as fierce as lion when Inuyasha had instinctively said no, and now she was acting like that of a child. These humans, mainly Rin and Kagome, never ceased to amaze him at such times as this.

So many expressions and emotions, it was like a female demon with pup, with the many mood swings these low creatures had. Though less destructive.

His 'study' was interrupted as the scent of dirt and bones filled his nose. His nostrils flared as he snorted to get the distasteful smell out. He wondered what had suddenly caused the smell, and he looked to see off in the distance the form of his hanyou brother's deceased love.

Sesshoumaru thought it as nothing but a rumor that had been going around, but they were told true of the Miko Kikyou being reborn into that of a clay body. He really could care less about his brother's love interests but the sudden waves of sadness hit him.

He cast his gaze down to see the young woman, Kagome, standing alone in the field, the children playing off to the side. The waves of sadness he felt was coming from her, they were so powerful when he felt them and they only seemed to grow as he began his descent back to earth.

His feet brushed the soft green grass of the field, and silent steps quickly moved him only that of a few feet away from the young girl.

Kagome sensed a presence near and looked up to see Sesshoumaru. She quickly looked away, she could not look into his golden eyes, those eyes that reminded her so much of Inuyasha. She had seen Kikyou suddenly appear and Inuyasha disappear just as quickly.

She heaved a silent heavy sigh as she tried to drop the weight Inuyasha had left off of her heart. But she just could not. The same chilliness she had felt earlier returned as her eyes began to tear. 'Damnit…' She cursed mentally. 'I cannot cry…I cannot break down…'

Quickly she tried to glue what pieces of herself had come apart. She turned to the children and called to them, a smile plastered to a face that lied to the world. "Rin, Shippou! Let's go back to the village, I have a treat for you!"

"Come on Rin! Kagome-okaasan is going to give us a treat!" Shippou tugged on the sleeve of Rin's kimono.

Rin stood there for a moment. "Why do you call Kagome-chan, okaasan?" Her brown eyes wide as she studies Shippou's face.

"Cuz Kagome is like a mother to me, see my mama and papa died and so now I'm an orphan."

"An…or-fin?" Rin stuttered over the new, foreign word.

"It means I ain't got no parents. Kagome-okaasan told me the word."

Rin blinked. "Ohhhh…well Rin is an or...fin too cuz Rin's momma and papa are gone too." She was silent for a moment. "Can Kagome-chan be Rin's okaasan too?" Her eyes big like small saucers as she looked at Shippou with hope.

"Of course! Kagome-okaasan already likes you!" Shippou gave her a bright smile.

Rin returned the smile ten fold and raced over to Kagome with Shippou right on her heels.

Kagome took Rin's hand in her right, and Shippou's in her left and led them back to the village for their treat. Sesshoumaru stood there watching them walk away, his white kimono fluttering in the gentle breeze that made his soft silver hair whip around him. His thoughts centering around the sadness that poured from the young woman that was slowly capturing his attention.
