Chapter 1: Underserved Punishment

“SIT!” THUNK!

“What the hell did I do to you this time?” InuYasha growled into the leaf strewn ground of the forest.

“Baka!” Kagome shouted at him before storming off deeper into the forest heading for the well, leaving the very confused half-demon shaking off the after effects of the subduing spell. As she walked away, her yellow back pack swinging on her back, he could barely make out the words she muttered.

“Oi Wench get back here now! I didn’t give you permission to leave!” InuYasha shouted at her retreating figure. He gulped as she stopped and threw her arms down angrily at her side. His ears immediately flattened as he regretted speaking as she screamed her reaction to his outburst.

“SIT!” and continued on deeper into the forest, stomping the entire way.

‘She is definitely beginning to piss me off! What the hell did I do to her anyway?’ He thought to himself as his legs began to tingle, the numbness receding. He stood shakily, glad for once that she had stormed off. He hated showing weakness. Showing it could kill you. He dusted the leaves and dirt off his clothes using his claws he flicked off a bug that was crawling on his arm. He paused to scent the air, his face towards the sky. ‘Salty?1 Kuso! Why is she crying? Was it something I did?’ Growling to himself he ran in the direction of her scent.

She appeared in front of him, sitting on a boulder, her head in her hands and her knees pulled up to her chest. She was shaking and he cursed silently as he figured the reason she was upset was because of him, like always. With an easy hop he landed in one of the many trees and slowly made his way over to her and sat in the tree to the side of her, far from human hearing range. With his demon enhanced hearing he could hear her whispering his name.

“InuYasha,” she said as she hugged her knees, “I should apologize to him, he did nothing wrong, nothing at all. Except maybe calling me that name.” she sighed, “It isn’t his fault really, with all the stress from school and me close to graduating, and missing my family. Not to mention fighting demons all the time. I wasn’t born in this era. It may feel more like home then my own, but it is still harder for me that all of them, even little Shippo.” She stood and wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. “That’s it, I shouldn’t feel sorry for myself. Plus I should be happy, my birthday is in a few days.”

‘Damn,” InuYasha silently cursed as guilt clutched his heart for calling her a wench. His hair blew towards Kagome as the wind shifted direction. Once again thanking the gods she wouldn’t be able to detect him, he inwardly sighed in relief. He mentally shrunk against the tree as she looked around suddenly. Her eyes narrowed and she grew stiff with anger. His eyes grew wide ‘There is no way in hell she could have found me out.’ his ears flattend to his head instinctively as he saw her turn towards the tree he was crouched in. She opened her mouth and growled.

“SIT! SIT! SIT!” She growled in anger. InuYasha slammed into the branch of the tree three times and heard a loud snap as the limb broke off the trunk. Under the force of the spell he fell towards the ground and slammed into the floor before the tree his and closing his eyes he felt the branch slam into his back. He lay silently in the crater, waiting for the rest of the sits to come. ‘she was way to far to hear me or see me, so how did she know I was there? Damn she must have been pissed to make this deep of a crater.’ He could hear her running and sliding down the crater.

“InuYasha?” she asked meekly as she tried shoving the heavy branch off of him.

“What!” he snapped at her in pain. He cringed the moment it left his mouth. His ears flattened themselves against his skull.

“Are you okay?” she said as she broke a branch off that was near his face. He looked at her then sighed.

“Yeah,” he said as the feeling in his legs returned and he rolled out from beneath the tree. He stood up and glared at her for a moment the huffed and turned his back to her. He dusted himself off and said, “What the hell was that for?”

“Sorry, I…I just got too much to handle with tests and everything. Plus my 18th birthday is in a couple of days and I really, really want to see my family, please InuYasha? Please? Will you let me go home for a week?” Her voice wavered as she begged.

“Feh! Just a few days then. I’ll be back within three days to get you. Three. Days. Got it?” He crossed his arms and closed his eyes then turned to face her opening his eyes again. “Only three.”

“Thank you InuYasha!” She squealed as she tackled him with a hug, “I’ll bring back some more of your favorite ramen, ok?”

“Keh, Whatever.” He was glad her face was in his shoulder and she couldn’t see the grin that crossed his face for a second. She pushed away from him and blushed.

“Well, I guess I should be heading to the well then.” She said as she attempted to scale the crater.

“Hey, how did you know I was up that tree?” He asked her as he grabbed her by the waist and hopped out of the hole. He set her down.

“I could smell you. You smell like pine and wet dirt and a bit of mint. Why?” she asked him.

“I was out of range, and I was careful not to make a sound.” He said as he shrugged.

“Okay.” She said arching a delicate eyebrow at him.

“Oh now you don’t believe me.” he huffed too low for her to hear.

“I heard that dog-boy.” she said as she turned and walked off leaving InuYasha to wonder just how she knew what he said. He spoke in Inu.
